An investigation into the transmission spectrum of a ferroelectric liquid crystal device is undertaken. This is done both for an initial static state and during a switching process. Comparisons are made between experimental data and theoretical predictions. The dynamic internal director configurations in the device is shown to be consistent with a simple model during both monopolar and bipolar addressing pulses. 相似文献

In this article, a newly synthesised ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) material, namely LAHS 22, has been characterised. The characterisation of the FLC material has been performed using dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and polarisation optical microscopy. We observed an enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material by incorporating gold nanoparticles (GNPs)-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs cause an increment in dielectric dispersion (up to kHz), absorption, spontaneous polarisation and rotational viscosity of the FLC material. The pure and GNPs-decorated MWCNTs doped FLC cells were analysed by means of various dielectric spectroscopic and optical measurements. The observed enhancement in the dielectric and electro-optical properties of the FLC material has also been studied with concentration of GNPs-decorated MWCNTs in FLC material. The GNPs-decorated MWCNTs/FLC composites are not only of fundamental importance, but also useful materials for device applications such as liquid crystal displays and memory devices. 相似文献

Electro-optical and spectral studies of isotropic photonic crystal fibre (PCF) infiltrated with photo-aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) under influence of external electric field are described. Desired alignment of FLC molecules is provided by generation of photo-aligning surface on the inner side of PCF structure. The electro-optical and dielectric responses of the fullerenes C60-doped ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) nanocolloids are reported. Order parameter and phase transition temperature remain invariant as a function of varying dopant concentration (0.10 wt% to 0.50 wt%). Faster switching response of nanocolloids comparing to that of the non-doped FLC is manifested by increase in the localised electric field (around 76% increment for 0.50 wt%), while reduction in the spontaneous polarisation could be the result of anti-parallel correlation amid dopant and FLC dipoles. Decrease in dielectric constant, absorption strength, dielectric strength and rotational viscosity of FLC nanocolloids than that of non-doped FLC is the other consequence of C60 doping. Goldstone-mode relaxation frequency is found to be increased with increasing doping concentration of C60 in FLC. 相似文献

We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study of the reflectance response of a deformed-helix ferroelectric (DHF) liquid crystal (LC) cell to an applied voltage under cross-polarisers. Using a model based on the effective dielectric tensor approximation, we derive simple analytical formulas to design a LC cell with maximum modulation depth and optimal linearity of the electro-optical response intensity versus the electric field. Our experimental results show that the cell works at frequencies up to 10 kHz and exhibits excellent linearity, with a total harmonic distortion as low as ?70 dB. These findings suggest that DHF-LCs can be exploited to develop simple and accurate optical sensors. 相似文献

The aggregation structure of a novel (self-assembling oil gelator/liquid crystal) composite was investigated using light scattering studies and morphological observations. The oil gelator forms a self-assembled-networks aggregate in an organic solvent with a low molecular weight liquid crystal (LC). It became apparent from Hv light scattering patterns and polarizing optical microscopy that two types of LC molecular alignments exist in the composite: a random orientation and a spherulite type one in a nematic gel state. Also, optical and atomic force microscopic observations revealed that fibrils which formed bundles in the fibre-like and spherulite-like aggregates, were formed in the composite. The alignment of the liquid crystal molecules was related to the aggregation structure of the self-assembling oil gelator in a liquid crystal gel state. 相似文献

We made comparative investigations on indium tin oxide (ITO) and single-layer graphene (SLG)-coated glass substrate as electrodes, specially for ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC)-based system. We experimentally examined the comparative behaviour of important electro-optical FLC parameters for ITO- and SLG-based sample cells. The parameters are observed to be almost similar for both the cells. Interestingly, the value of threshold voltage is observed lower in SLG-based cell in comparison to that of conventional ITO/ITO cell. The presented results will definitely add a step to prove the suitability of graphene to be used as transparent electrodes in FLC-based display devices. 相似文献

The synthesis of a new molecule specifically designed to exhibit both ferroelectric and nonlinear optical properties is presented. This molecule possesses an optically active phenyl sulphinic group, which introduces a dipole moment directly linked to the chromophore group, with a nitro group in the meta -position. The rest of the molecule comprises a tolane and a benzoate group. Such a structure results in an enantiotropic smectic C*-smectic A phase sequence in its polymorphism. A first measurement of the spontaneous polarization shows a high value. The polymorphism of the racemic homologous molecule possessing the nitro group in the ortho-position is also presented, and also shows the smectic C-smectic A phase sequence. 相似文献

We measured the flexoelectric ratio e* of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with a calamitic ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). We doped two kinds of commercial FLC into the pure NLC at a weight concentration of 5 wt%. The absolute value of the flexoelectric ratio was increased up to 49% compared to the pure NLC. The greater transverse dipole moment and the elastic constant of FLC are thought to be related to the increase of the flexoelectric ratio. 相似文献

Dielectric and electro-optical properties of Mn12-acetate and ferroelectric liquid crystal composite
The impact of single-molecule magnet (SMM), Mn12-acetate, on the dielectric properties of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) has been investigated by dielectric spectroscopy and electro-optical techniques in a dual electrode sample cell (DESC). The temperature-dependent dielectric studies on Mn12-acetate/FLC composite have revealed the enhancement in the ferroelectric (smectic C*) to paraelectric (smectic A*) phase transition temperature by 3.5°C. The relaxation process corresponding to Goldstone mode in the ferroelectric phase of the composite is found to be slower compared to pure FLC sample. The electrical response for an input triangular wave shows the existence of one extra polarisation peak in Mn12-acetate/FLC composite which is ascribed to the induced dipole moment in Mn12-acetate molecule. The electro-optical texture of Mn12-acetate/FLC composite revealed that the incorporation of SMM in FLC significantly improve the memory effect. 相似文献

The present work concerns with the investigation of the effect of dispersion of Silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in host ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) KCFLC10S on the dielectric and electro-optical properties and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) absorption spectra of the pristine and dispersed systems. We have found that the dispersion of SiO2 NPs in the host FLC strongly influences the various properties of dispersed systems. No evidence of aggregates and clumps in the dispersed system has been observed. Due to SiO2 NPs dispersion, a rapid decrease in dielectric permittivity ε’, increase in conductivity σ with frequency, increase in spontaneous polarisation Ps and decrease in switching time with bias voltage have been observed. Based on the absorption spectra, we have also made an attempt to link the electro-optical and dielectric response with the mechanism of FLC–NPs interactions. 相似文献

Thermal properties of three ferroelectric liquid crystals, namely: 3-octyloxy-6-[2-fluor-4-(fluoroctyloxy)phenyl]-pyridine (FFP), 3-(3-fluor-nonyl)-6[4-heptyloxyphenyl]-pyridine (FNHPh-P), 4-[(S,S)-2,3-epoxyhexyloxy]phenyl 4-(decyloxy)benzoate (EHPhDB) were studied using heat flux differential scanning calorimetry method. All the transitions expected in this compounds, except the SmC*-SmA* and SmC*-S3 transitions, were detected in the DSC curves. The temperatures of the phase transitions and the enthalpy changes associated with them were determined. The transition from the liquid crystalline to the crystalline state showed significant hysteresis for all three compounds studied. The following transitions: SmA*-Is, SmG*-SmC* for FNHPh-P, N*-Is for EHPhDB, N*-Is and SmC*-N* for FFP also showed a small hysteresis basing on which first-order character of all the above transitions was implied. In this paper, polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films which based on the acrylate and the thiol monomers were first prepared by ultraviolet-initiated polymerisation. The electro-optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were systematically investigated. The functionality of thiol monomers and their feed ratio showed great influence on the properties of the fabricated PDLC films because of the existence of competition between thiol–acrylate reaction and acrylate monomer polymerisation reaction. This made the polymer network and electro-optical properties of the PDLC films easily tunable by the introduction of the thiol monomers. When added four-functional thiol monomer PETMP with appropriate concentration into the PDLC system, lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved. 相似文献

For 1-[3-fluoro-4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl]-2-[4-2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutoxybutoxy)biphenyl-4-yl]ethane (1F7), built of chiral molecules, results of dielectric measurements of liquid-crystalline and solid phases are presented. Rich polymorphism of liquid-crystalline (SmC*, SmC*A and SmI*A) phases as well as of solid (Cr1 and Cr2) phases were observed down to –130°C. At a frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 3 MHz, the relaxation processes were detected in ferroelectric SmC*, antiferroelectric SmC*A and highly ordered SmI*A smectic phases. The mechanism of complex dynamics (moleculear and collective) was identified with the help of the bias field. Vitrification of conformationally disordered crystal phase Cr2 was found in accordance with calorimetric observations. 相似文献

Six series of liquid crystal materials containing a 2,5-disubstituted thiophene unit were synthesized. The liquid crystal compounds obtained were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The properties of liquid crystalline phases were investigated as a function of spacer units, number of aromatic core rings and different terminal moieties. Cyano, methoxy and iodo groups were used as terminal groups. It is found that: (i) compounds having one thiophene ring and one phenyl ring connected by an ester group, with a length/breadth value of 2.1, exhibit no mesophase, while other compounds containing two biphenyl rings, with a length/breadth ratio of 2.7, show mesophases; (ii) the polarity of terminal groups and the flexible spacer length significantly affect the thermal behaviour of these compounds; (iii) the nematic transition range of cyano-containing compounds decreases with increasing length of the flexible spacer, and long alkenyloxy chains tend to facilitate the formation of the smectic phase and suppress the nematic phase in all the mesogenic compounds synthesized. 相似文献

The influences of mesogenic group chemical structures on dielectric relaxation behavior were investigated for ferroelectric side chain liquid crystalline polymers (FLCPs). The relaxation time and activation energies of the Goldstone mode, α‐, and β‐relaxations decrease with increasing spacer length because of the plasticizer effect of the spacer. Moreover, the relaxation intensity increases with increasing spacer length for FLCPs. An FLCP with a longer spacer length exhibits a higher mesogenic group mobility, and subsequently leads to easier reorientation toward the alternating electrical field. An increase in mesogenic core rigidity results in an increase in the relaxation time and activation energies, and a decrease in the relaxation intensities for the Goldstone mode, α‐, and β‐relaxations. Moreover, the β‐relaxation is suppressed and cannot be observed in the glassy state for FLCPs containing naphthyl biphenylcarboxylate as the mesogenic group. Shorter relaxation time, smaller activation energies, and higher intensity of the α‐, and β‐relaxations were obtained for FLCPs containing chiral moiety with a flexible heptyl alkyl chain. However, the relaxation intensity of the Goldstone mode for FLCPs containing this chiral moiety was smaller than that for FLCPs containing the chiral moiety with a butyl alkyl chain. For FLCPs containing a chiral moiety with two asymmetrical centers, their Goldstone mode relaxation showed larger amplitude. The α‐ and β‐relaxations are suppressed for these FLCPs because of the dense packing and memory effect of the smectic phase. The relationship between the chemical structure of the mesogenic group and dielectric relaxations is discussed in great detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The static model to describe coherent (regular) transmittance in helix ferroelectric liquid crystal cells under the transient light scattering mode is proposed. It can be used to develop three-dimensional volumetric and two-dimensional liquid crystal displays. The dependence of coherent transmittance on cell parameters and the amplitude of the applied electric field is analysed. Conditions for increasing scattering efficiency and contrast ratio enhancement through an interference quenching effect of the coherent transmittance are indicated. 相似文献

Dielectric relaxation processes in various phases of a chiral smectic liquid crystal compound have been investigated over a wide range of frequencies from 10 to 300 kHz. Dielectric spectroscopy reveals the existence of two relaxation frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric and ferrielectric Goldstone modes in the range of temperature where two different phases coexist. This phenomenon of coexistence is examined with respect to the cell thickness and reversal temperature. 相似文献

Electric fields can induce mechanical vibrations in planar aligned sandwich cells of ferroelectric liquid crystals. Measurements on a polysiloxane and a polyacrylate side chain polymer proved that the electromechanical effect also exists in ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers. The main characteristics of the electromechanical responses of these polymers are described and compared to the response of low molecular weight ferroelectric liquid crystals. According to the proposed interpretation, the vibrations in the direction parallel to both the smectic layers and cell substrates are due to coupling between the director rotation and the flow, while the resonances in the vibrations normal to the plates are connected to layer deformations. 相似文献

Effects of the content of fluorinated alkene-terminated liquid crystal (LC) molecules on the physical properties of the fluorinated alkene-terminated LC/E8 mixture were studied. The morphology and electro-optical properties as they doped in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were investigated. The detailed discussion of the obtained results is given. As a result, comparing with the physical properties of the series of LC mixtures with the same content of the analogous fully saturated compounds doped with E8, we find that the birefringence is significantly larger for the LC mixture with the alkene-terminated materials. Both fluorinated alkene-terminated LC molecules and the analogous fully saturated compounds doped with E8 reduce the driving voltage of PDLC films. Moreover, PDLC films with the fluorinated alkene-terminated LC molecules possessed higher contrast ratio and faster response time than that of the PDLC films prepared by adding the same mass fraction of the analogous fully saturated compounds. Thus, the ability to manipulate physical properties of LC mixture and electro-optical properties of PDLC films by changing the LC molecular structures may have future relevance for new LC structures design and applications of PDLC films. 相似文献
