We have determined the orientational distribution of cyano-substituted side chains of a rubbed polyimide film, and a liquid crystal monolayer adsorbed on the film, by means of optical second harmonic generation. With the orientational distribution of a main chain that was measured in a previous study by means of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, we have obtained the correlation of all the orientational distributions contributing to the alignment of LC molecules, i.e. pretilt angle. We find that the side chain plays a role in increasing the pretilt angle, but in the case of rubbing strength dependence, the main chain has stronger correlation with the pretilt angle than has the side chain.  相似文献

Recently we observed an unusual temperature dependence of the pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal generated at the rubbed surface of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film. To understand the mechanism, a detailed investigation of the temperature effect on the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film has been carried out. On heating the film above the glass transition temperature of the polymer, a clear change is seen in the temperature dependence of the optical phase retardation. We infer from this investigation that the thermal variation of the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation results in a change in the temperature variation of the pretilt angle.  相似文献

Polyamic acid precursors were prepared by mixing dianhydride of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 1,2,3,4-benzene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (pyrromellitic dianhydride PMDA), cis-1,2,3,4-cyclopentane-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (CPDA), the diamine (alkyl 3,5-diaminobenzoate) with side chain, and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) without side chain. Copolyimide films with various side chain lengths were prepared by thermal imidization of polyamic acid precursors. The roughness of rubbed polyimide surface increased with increase in the side chain length. The pretilt angle for the BTDA and PMDA series polyimide (PI) increased exponentially with increase in side chain length. Various pretilt angles were obtained on the synthesized polyimides. In the case of CPDA series PI, the pretilt angle was nearly constant at 0 until the alkyl side chain length reached 12 (C12) and then increased markedly at C18. Models of pretilt angle generation were tested.  相似文献

Abstract

We report a direct experimental observation of surface-induced liquid crystal (LC) monolayer orientation and its relation to the LC bulk alignment. Using optical second-harmonic generation from these LC monolayers, adsorbed on rubbed polymer surfaces, we determined both the polar and azimuthal orientation of the LC molecules. A close correlation between the rubbing-induced azimuthal orientational distribution of the LC monolayers and the resulting LC bulk pretilt angle has been observed. A simple model based on epitaxial growth of the bulk LC on top of the first LC monolayer is proposed to explain this correlation.  相似文献

A novel alignment method for control of high pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystals (NLC), using a solvent dipping effect on various alignment layers, was successfully investigated. The pretilt angle of a NLC is increased by dipping before rubbing treatment on three kinds of rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The pretilt generated by the dipping after rubbing a PI surface with a short side chain is high compared with a PI surface with a long side chain. The pretilt generated by dipping before rubbing homeotropic layer of a positive type NLC (δε > 0) is lower than that of the negative type NLC (δε < 0). The generated NLC pretilt angle is attributed to the perpendicular component of the permittivity epsilon of the NLC.  相似文献

Molecular organization at polyimide surfaces used as alignment layers in liquid crystal displays was investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. We focus on the orientation of the long alkyl side groups at the polymer surface using polarization-selected SFG spectra of the CH(3)- and CH(2)-stretch modes of the side chain. Mechanical rubbing and baking, an accepted industrial procedure used to produce pretilt of the liquid crystal, was found to induce pronounced azimuthal anisotropy in the orientational distribution of the alkyl side chains. Orientational analysis of the SFG vibrational spectra in terms of the azimuthal and tilt angles (in and out of plane, respectively) of the alkyl side chains shows their preferential tilt along the rubbing direction, with the azimuthal distribution narrower for stronger rubbed polymer samples.  相似文献

We investigated new rubbing-free techniques for liquid crystal (LC) alignment with non- polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on plates coated with two kinds of the polyimide (PI) films. It was found that monodomain alignment of nematic (N) LC is obtained in the cell having a PI surface without a side chain. We successfully observed that the generated pretilt angle of the NLC is about 3 with an angle of incidence of 70 on the PI surface without side chains. This pretilt angle generation is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces; the uniform alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effects due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces.  相似文献

The molecular orientational states of homogeneously aligned, helix unwinding, chiral smectic C liquid crystals placed in a thin cell (surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals [SSFLC]) were studied. They were classified by the optical viewing conditions and the relationship between the directions of the chevron layer structure and the surface pretilt. The molecular orientational models of the states were considered and illustrated with regard to the experimental results. The models of molecular orientation give us a total understanding of the orientational states which appear in SSFLCs with parallel rubbing. Furthermore, the effect of the surface pretilt angle on the orientational and optical properties of SSFLCs is discussed.  相似文献

Our studies on the nematic phase of different kinds of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers tend to focus on the following question: what about the anisotropy of the backbone conformation in the orientational medium imposed by its mesogenic groups ? By means of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) different features are qualitatively and quantitatively discussed. In the case of liquid crystal side chain polymers, the chain anisotropy is essentially driven by thermodynamical, structural and chemical considerations. In addition, in the case of liquid crystal main chain polymers, hairpin defects are observed for sufficiently long polymers.  相似文献

We investigated pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet exposure during the imidization of polyimide (PI). The generated pretilt angle of a nematic (N) LC using an in situ photo-alignment method is smaller than that using a conventional photo-alignment method on a surface of PI having side chains. The NLC pretilt angles using an in situ photo-alignment method injected at isotropic phase increased with annealing were observed.  相似文献

The molecular orientation of very thin films on solid substrates can be determined quantitatively by measuring the polarized infrared (IR) absorption spectra of samples as a function of angle of incidence. The quantitative molecular orientation is derived by fitting the incident angle dependence and the dichroic ratio with theoretical calculations. We applied this method to a technologically important system: liquid crystal (LC)/rubbed polyimide film. To understand the alignment mechanism of LC molecules in contact with rubbed polyimide films, we have quantitatively determined the molecular orientation of rubbed polyimide films and a surface LC layer in contact with a rubbed polyimide film. In this paper two relations are discussed: (1) correlation between the inclination angle of polyimide backbone structures in rubbed films and the pretilt angle of bulk LC in contact with them, and (2) relation among the molecular orientation of a rubbed polyimide film and those of surface and bulk LC layers in contact with it.  相似文献

Surface lamellar decoration (SLD), surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) experiments have been utilized to study the molecular orientation and conformation changes at a rubbed polyimide alignment-layer surface. This aromatic polyimide containing pendent cyanobiphenyl mesogens was synthesized via a polycondensation of 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxy-phenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) with bis[omega-[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenoxy]hexyl] 4,4'-diamino-2,2'-biphenyldicarboxylate (nCBBP, n = 6), abbreviated as 6FDA--6CBBP. Uniform alignment layers, possessing high pretilt angles ranging from 39 degrees to 43 degrees, have been achieved after mechanical rubbing of the polyimide thin film surface at room temperature and subsequent annealing. This is the first time that high pretilt angles have been detected to possess a negative angle (-theta(c)) with respect to the rubbing direction (i.e., opposite to the rubbing direction), considerably different from the conventional pretilt angle (theta(c)) observed along the rubbing direction. This observation is confirmed using magnetic null and SHG methods. Combined polyethylene (PE) SLD and atomic force microscopy experiments reveal that the azimuthal orientation distribution of the long axis of the edge-on PE lamellar crystals is oriented normal to the rubbing direction, indicating that the PE chains are aligned parallel to the rubbing direction. This SLD technique probes the anisotropic surface orientation of the outermost molecules of the rubbed polyimide layer. The SERS results show that prior to rubbing the surface, both the pendent cyanobiphenyls in the side chains and backbones possess nearly planar chain conformations at the polyimide surface. Mechanical rubbing causes not only tilting of the backbone moieties, such as imide-phenylene structure, but also significant conformational rearrangements of the pendent side chains at the surfaces. The molecular mechanism of this unusual alignment is due to the fact that the pendent cyanobiphenyls forms a uniformly tilted conformation on the rubbed surface, and the polar cyano groups point down toward the layer surface deduced from SHG phase measurements. This conformational rearrangement of the side chains results in the formation of fold-like bent structures on the surface, which directly leads to the long axis of cyanobiphenyls having the -theta(c) pretilt angle with respect to the rubbing direction.  相似文献

We propose and investigate obtaining high pretilt nematic alignment using a new photoalignment method: single oblique polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with PI surfaces having side chains. We successfully observed that the generated high pretilt angles of the NLC are about 6 with an angle of incidence of 5 80 on the PI surface. Also, the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 6 with an UV light irradiation of 30 min for angle of incidence of 5, and decreases with increasing UV light irradiation time. High pretilt orientation of the NLC is successfully observed in cells with a single oblique UV light irradiation on PI surfaces.  相似文献

The molecular orientational order of a side chain thermotropic nematic polymer has been measured by proton NMR. The alignment of the side chains is reflected in the splitting of the NMR signal into a doublet. Simultaneous orientational effects of magnetic and electric fields on the mesogenic groups were studied in magnetically preoriented layers. Temperature, twist angle and thickness dependences of the spectra were measured. The order parameter S and the parameter of orientational order S' of the samples were estimated.  相似文献

Molecular structures of poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) at the PBMA/air and PBMA/water interfaces have been studied by sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. PBMA surfaces in both air and water are dominated by the methyl groups of the ester side chains. The average orientation and orientation distribution of these methyl groups at the PBMA/air and PBMA/water interfaces are different, indicating that surface restructuring occurs when the PBMA sample contacts water. Analysis shows that the orientation distribution of side chain methyl groups on the PBMA surface is narrower in water than that in air, indicating that the PBMA surface can be more ordered in water. To our knowledge, this is the first time that quantitative comparisons between molecular surface structures of polymers in air and in water have been made. Two assumptions on the orientation distribution function, including a Gaussian distribution and a formula based on the maximum entropy approach, are used in the analysis. It has been found that the orientation angle distribution function deduced by the Gaussian distribution and the maximum entropy distribution are quite similar, showing that the Gaussian distribution is a good approximation for the angle distribution. The effect of experimental error on the deduced orientational distribution is also discussed.  相似文献

A high pretilt angle for the nematic liquid crystal, 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), was observed on rubbed polythiophene (PTP) surfaces having alkyl chains with more than ten carbon atoms. We consider that this is due to a surface-excluded volume effect caused by the long alkyl chains between the LC molecules and the PTP surfaces. The polar anchoring strength in 5CB on rubbed PTP surfaces with long alkyl chains has also been successfully evaluated. The extrapolation length de of 5CB increases with increasing alkyl chain lengths above the seven carbons of alkyl chain R7; that is, it may be attributed to the high pretilt angle. An extrapolation length of 5 nm is observed in 5CB for the seven carbons alkyl chain R7 on the PTP surface; this indicates high anchoring strength.  相似文献
