The director structures, meniscus profile, and defects in free-standing films of the twist grain boundary TGBA and UTGBC* liquid crystals were studied. The films were characterized by a combination of polarizing microscopy and fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy. Five principal regions of meniscus were distinguished. When film thickness in the meniscus is much smaller then the TGB pitch, there is no difference between the free-standing films of TGB and ordinary smectic A liquid crystals. When the film thickness is larger than the TGB pitch, filamentary texture is observed. The 3D director pattern of the filaments are similar to the ground state director fields of TGBA and UTGBC* liquid crystals. In the intermediate thickness region of the meniscus, when the film thickness and TGB pitch are commensurate, a unique radial pattern is observed. Based on the fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy studies of the director field, we propose a model for the 3D director structure in this part of the meniscus.  相似文献

We propose a simple phenomenological model which is able to account for the various twist grain boundary (TGB) phases, including the recently discovered undulating twist grain boundary-C* (UTGBC*) phase. In the UTGBC* phase, the smectic C* (SmC*)-like blocks and the grain boundaries separating them undulate to form a two-dimensional square lattice perpendicular to the TGB helix axis. We treat the grain boundaries separating adjacent smectic blocks as interfaces with an anisotropic interfacial tension. At moderate chiral strengths we find a TGBA-TGBC-SmC* sequence. As the chiral strength is increased this goes to the sequence TGBA-UTGBC*-SmC*. Such sequences have been observed experimentally.  相似文献

We have synthesised a chiral liquid crystal with a tolane unit that exhibits intense fluorescence in both solution and the solid states. The liquid crystal can form the enantiotropic twist-grain boundary A (TGBA*) and Blue II phases, and the helical pitch of the TGBA* phase decreases with an increasing temperature.  相似文献

Highly optically pure (R)- and (S)-3-ethylmercapto-2-methylpropionic acids were synthesized by using optically active (D)- and (L)-2,10-camphorsultams as chiral auxiliaries, respectively. Their derivatives, (R)- and (S)-EMMPNmB (m=6-12), were prepared for investigation. Microscopic texture observations demonstrated that the materials possess three stable frustrated phases: BP, TGBA* and TGBC* phases. Interestingly, it was found that the N* phase behaves as an intermediary phase between BP and TGBA* phases in a rather narrow temperature range (calc. 0.5-1.4°C). A study of the racemic mixture, (±)-EMMPNmB (m=10), indicated that the chirality of the molecule could suppress the formation of smectic phases in the heating process. An increase of alkyl chain length favoured the formation of the TGB phases particularly, in accompaniment with a change of TGB phases from monotropic to enantiotropic. Moderate maximum P S values (calc. 14-19 nC cm-2) and apparent tilt angle (calc. 20°) were obtained for the TGBC* phase in a surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal geometry.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals derived from (S)‐2‐(6‐methoxy‐2‐naphthyl)propionic acid, with non‐fluorinated or semi‐perfluorinated alkanes positioned at a chiral terminal chain, have been synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and electro‐optical measurements. The non‐fluorinated compounds, 1‐hexyl (S)‐2‐{6‐[4‐(4‐alkanoyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy]‐2‐napthyl}propionates exhibit rich mesomorphism—the BPII, N*, TGBA*, SmA* and SmC* phases. The fluorinated compounds display only the SmA* and SmC* phases, suggesting that the fluorination promotes the formation of smectic phases. In addition, the SmA* and SmC* phases of the fluorinated compounds have enhanced thermal stability as compared with the corresponding phases of the non‐fluorinated compounds. The spontaneous polarization (P s values) for the non‐fluorinated compounds are higher than those of the fluorinated compounds at any reduced temperature below the SmA*–SmC* transition. The electro‐optical responses measured for these compounds in the ferroelectric phase displayed thresholdless, V‐shaped switching.  相似文献

A novel flexible free-standing films of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/silica polymer network dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) have been prepared by the sol-gel process. In the hydrolysis of silicon alkoxides tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) processes, the silica having -OH with the -OH groups on PVA formed polymer networks with Si-O-C bonds by dehydration. The cholesteric liquid crystals were incorporated into the networks. The free-standing films were obtained by the spin-coating method. In order to improve the compatibility and microstructure of the cholesteric liquid crystals with PVA/silica polymer networks, the amphiphilic compound of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA) was introduced into the forming film solutions. Effects of the different ratios of raw materials on the structure of films were investigated. The microscopic morphology of free-standing films and the uniform dispersion of CLCs in the films have been characterized by polarizing optical microscopy (POM), the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer and atomic force microscope (AFM). The free-standing films exhibiting excellent CLC droplets dispersion, mechanical stability, and good flexibility could be useful for flexible displays, switchable optical elements and smart windows.  相似文献

We report alignment of anisotropic amphiphilic dye molecules within oblate and prolate anisotropic micelles and lamellae, the basic building blocks of surfactant-based lyotropic liquid crystals. Absorption and fluorescence transition dipole moments of these dye molecules orient either parallel or orthogonal to the liquid crystal director. This alignment enables three-dimensional visualization of director structures and defects in different lyotropic mesophases by means of fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy and two-photon excitation fluorescence polarizing microscopy. The studied structures include nematic tactoids, Schlieren texture with disclinations in the calamitic nematic phase, oily streaks in the lamellar phase, developable domains in the columnar hexagonal phase, and various types of line defects in the discotic cholesteric phase. Orientational three-dimensional imaging of structures in the lyotropic cholesterics reveals large Burgers vector dislocations in cholesteric layering with singular disclinations in the dislocation cores that are not common for their thermotropic counterparts.  相似文献

The electro-optic and complex dielectric behaviour of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4′-(n-butanoyloxyprop-1-oxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate, having chiral SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases, have been investigated. Complex dielectric permittivities were measured as a function of frequency, d.c. bias field and temperature. Spontaneous polarization was measured by the current reversal technique; tilt angle was measured under a polarizing microscope using a low frequency electric field. The electro-optic properties and dielectric behaviour of the material are compared with results obtained by DSC and polarizing optical microscopy. Dielectric relaxation processes in SmCA* and hexatic smectic phases were determined. The dielectric strength at the SmCA* to hexatic smectic phase transition is discussed in terms of coupling between the long range bond orientational order and smectic C director. It seems from the results of spontaneous polarization and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy that the material might possess an additional phase between the SmCA* and hexatic smectic I* phases.  相似文献

Abstract

A pressure system specially designed for the study of liquid crystal materials at high pressures up to 4kbar is presented. The pressure system is based on a hydrostatic screw injector and uses either oil or gas as the pressure transmitting medium. The type of measurements which can be performed with the instrument include polarized microscopy, optical spectroscopy, electrooptic and electrical measurements. The different measurements performed place specific constraints on the design of the apparatus and the pressure cells, and details are given. A preliminary study of the smectic A modification of the twist grain boundary phase (TGBA) at high pressures is presented. The pressure versus temperature phase diagram shows (i) a negative gradient of the TGBA/isotropic phase boundary line and (ii) that the TGBA phase does not exist at pressures above about 250 bar. Following Lubensky's analogy between the TGBA phase and type II superconductors, the disappearance of the TGBA phase at high pressure may imply that the Landau-Ginsburg parameter K decreases with pressure.  相似文献

Liquid crystal alignment layers of a high T g polymer containing an azobenzene moiety are prepared by photofabrication of a surface relief grating (SRG). The interference pattern of a circular and linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam generated the surface relief grating and the morphology was detected by atomic force microscope. The optical anisotropy of the films was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy. The orientation of the optical axis of the film mainly depends on the direction of the initial polarization plane. Nematic liquid crystals were aligned parallel to the direction of the grating, but the pretilt angles of the liquid crystals were nearly zero. Irradiation with homogeneous linearly polarized light could also align liquid crystals, but this alignment capability was weaker than that of the SRG film.  相似文献

We report on the stabilisation of the liquid-crystalline, twist-grain boundary A (TGBA) phase in mixtures of a chiral liquid crystal and surface-functionalised spherical Au nanoparticles (NPs) of 10 nm diameter. The results, obtained by calorimetric, optical, small-angle X-ray and plasmon resonance measurements, demonstrate that a TGBA phase, which is metastable for the pure liquid crystal host, can be effectively stabilised for a 3 K range in the presence of NPs. Moreover, the role of NPs size on the TGBA stabilisation is briefly discussed.  相似文献

To reveal the structure of an amorphous mesophase with a hidden liquid crystalline structure (ISm*) in a chiral side chain polymer, P8*M, its racemic isomer has been synthesized along with two more RS‐copolymers with controlled enantiomer excess. The phase behaviour of the copolymers was studied comparatively by DSC and X‐ray scattering. Optical rotatory dichroism was measured for thin films of P8*M and two homologue polymers, differing in the polymeric main chain, by the size of the chiral terminal group and by its absolute configuration. A helical superstructure with pitch of about 250?nm is indicated within the ISm* mesophase. Its structure as a short pitch TGB phase hase been proven conclusively.  相似文献

A series of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) films were prepared from cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch‐LC) mixtures containing different components such as non‐reactive LC monomer, polymerizable monomer, chiral dopant, dye, and photoinitiator upon polymerization. The influence of the polymerizable monomer and dye of Ch‐LC mixtures on the reflection properties was investigated. The reflection bandwidth for all the samples can be increased by photo‐polymerization, and the network upon polymerization derived from two different polymerizable monomers with both one and two functional groups is more effective than that from one polymerizable monomer for broadening the reflection band. Especially, a dye‐doped Ch‐LC film can reflect incident light with the bandwidth over the wavelength range of 550–2350 nm, which is due to a greater pitch gradient formed inside of Ch‐LC film. The gradient pitch network structure was firstly demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the film prepared from high diacrylate monomer concentration and subsequently proved by using a wash‐out/refill method. The nematic liquid crystals monomers was infiltrated into the polymer network that was prefabricated by removing the low molar weight LCs from the original PSCLCs film, and SEM exhibited the existence of a pitch gradient across the film thickness. The electric field poling process of free-standing films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix doped with the nonlinear optical compound 4-(dimethylamino)-4'-nitrostilbene (DMANS) was investigated by molecular simulation methods. The influence of the vacuum/bulk interfacial regions on static and dynamic properties, including the glass transition temperature Tg and the field-induced chromophore reorientation, was studied by employing films of three different thicknesses and by comparison with previous work on the bulk system. The interfacial region, defined as the region, where the local density increases from zero to the bulk density, is about 2 nm wide, independent of the film thickness. Tg decreases with decreasing film thickness, in accord with previous experimental work and theoretical predictions. The resistance against field-induced chromophore reorientation in the liquid state is found to increase strongly with the film thickness.  相似文献

Chiral non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety as chiral entity and a biphenyl aromatic core, interconnected through n-butyl (C4) or n-pentyl (C5) parity alkylene spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their liquid crystalline properties. All the dimers exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. The first member of the dimers having the C4 central spacer exhibit only the chiral nematic (N*) mesophase, while the higher homologues also show smectic A (SmA) and twist grain boundary (TGB) mesophases. The dimers of the other series containing the C5 central spacer also have stable SmA, TGB and N* mesophases, except for the first which does not show the TGB phase. Both series of compounds show a weak odd-even effect with terminal alkyl chain substitution, while the spacer length has a marked influence on the phase transition temperatures.  相似文献

A new type of chiral smectic elastomer based on poly[4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy)benzoic acid] is discussed. The layer structure and the molecular tilt stabilized by hydrogen bonding between side groups are identified by X-ray measurements. Well aligned and optically clear monodomain samples with smectic layers in the film plane are obtained by uniaxial stretching and then frozen-in by additional gamma-radiation crosslinking. In this monodomain state, two opposite orientations of director tilt are distributed through the sample thickness and alternate between neighbouring layers in a zigzag fashion. This structure of the stress-aligned chiral smectic C elastomer is similar to that of antiferroelectric liquid crystals of the smectic C* A type. Further mechanical stretching in the layer plane induces a gradual c-director reorientation along the new stress axis, when a threshold deformation ~ 20% is exceeded. The (reversible) transition proceeds as a director azimuthal rotation around the smectic C cone, with the layers essentially undistorted and the tilt angle of the side mesogenic groups preserved.  相似文献

Synthesis of free-standing crystalline barium titanate (BaTiO3) films at vapor/liquid or liquid/liquid interface at room temperature has been investigated. High concentration Ba, Ti alkoxides precursor solution (1.2 mol/l) or pre-hydrolyzed precursor solutions by water vapor in a H2O/Ba molar ratio of 0 to 6 were used as dropping solutions at the interfaces. Transparent gel films were formed when partially hydrolyzed precursors (H2O/Ba = 2 to 3) were spread out on a N2/liquid paraffin interface. The films shrank from syneresis and vaporization of the solvent during aging at room temperature. As a result, free-standing transparent films with a thickness of around 1 m and little stoichiometric deviation were obtained by separation from the liquid surface and rinse by hexane. The films consisted of crystalline BaTiO3 particles of less than a few nanometers. Nanostructured dense BaTiO3 free-standing films with a grain size less than 100 nm were obtained at 1030°C.  相似文献

Recent theoretical developments regarding the understanding of weakly chaotic transients in ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), induced by electric field, are studied in terms of the interaction with magnetic field. Our research is related with the nonlinear dynamical system represented by a thin film of surface-stabilized FLC in smectic C* phase, and subjected by the swinging magnetic field. The computation of the Lyapunov exponents from the dynamic equation for the director field reveals that the director dynamics exhibits limit cycle, hyperchaotic attractor and strange attractor behavior in the dissipative nonlinear media. The transients between director’s phase space trajectories can be handled by the magnetic field parameters. The fundamental understanding of the director dynamics may have a valuable contribution to the applications of thin liquid crystal films.  相似文献

 Foam films drawn from suspensions of the phospholipid 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (DMPC) in water/ethanol mixtures were used for the investigation of the relation between the properties of the monolayers and the interaction between the film surfaces. The film thickness and the contact angle between the film and the meniscus were measured as a function of the temperature in a range around the temperature of the main phase transition for the lipid. Additionally, fluorescence microscopy was applied to investigate the distribution of a fluorescent lipidlike dye in the surface of the film and the meniscus. From the contact angle the free energy of film formation was calculated. At the temperature of the chain-melting phase transition the film thickness decreases by 0.7 nm. This can be related to a decrease in the thickness of the hydrocarbon layers of the lipid monolayers at this temperature. The decrease in the film thickness leads to a reduction in the free energy by increasing the van der Waals attraction between the film surfaces. No structures were observed in the monolayers of the film in the fluorescence investigation. However, on formation of the very thin equilibrium film the dye was expelled from the film area, indicating an increase in the packing density of the lipid, if the monolayers are in adhesive contact in the film.
