The mesophase behaviour of the lanthanum(III) alkanoates [La(CxH2x+1COO)3] (x =3-19) has been investigated by hot-stage polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature X-ray diffraction. Lanthanum(III) butyrate monohydrate shows no mesomorphism, whereas for the remaining short chain homologues (x = 4-9) a highly viscous mesophase M and a smectic A phase were observed. The longer chain lanthanum(III) soaps (x = 10-19) exhibit only a smectic A phase. However, the chain length has a pronounced effect on the transition temperatures. The thermal behaviour of lanthanum(III) alkanoates is compared with that of other lanthanide(III) alkanoates.  相似文献

In this paper, we describe the synthesis, characterization and thermal behaviour of praseodymium(III) alkanoates. The compounds have the stoichiometry [Pr(CxH2x+1COO)3], where x = 5-19, and were characterized by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The thermal behaviour was investigated by hot-stage polarizing optical microscopy, DSC and high temperature X-ray diffraction. A highly viscous mesophase M and a smectic A phase were observed for the shorter chain compounds (x = 5-8), whereas only a smectic A phase was observed for the longer chain compounds of this type of metallomesogens. N‐Alkyl‐N‐methylpyrrolidinium cations have been used for the design of ionic liquid crystals, including a new type of uranium‐containing metallomesogen. Pyrrolidinium salts with bromide, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, tetrafluoroborate, hexafluorophosphate, thiocyanate, tetrakis(2‐ thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)europate(III) and tetrabromouranyl counteranions were prepared. For the bromide salts and tetrabromouranyl compounds, the chain length of the alkyl group CnH2n+1 was varied from eight to twenty carbon atoms (n=8, 10–20). The compounds show rich mesomorphic behaviour: highly ordered smectic phases (the crystal smectic E phase and the uncommon crystal smectic T phase), smectic A phases, and hexagonal columnar phases were observed, depending on chain length and anion. This work gives better insight into the nature and formation of the crystal smectic T phase, and the molecular requirements for the appearance of this highly ordered phase. This uncommon tetragonal mesophase is thoroughly discussed on the basis of detailed powder X‐ray diffraction experiments and in relation to the existing literature. Structural models are proposed for self‐assembly of the molecules within the smectic layers. In addition, the photophysical properties of the compounds containing a metal complex anion were investigated. For the uranium‐containing mesogens, luminescence can be induced by dissolving them in an ionic liquid matrix. The europium‐containing compound shows intense red photoluminescence with high colour purity.  相似文献

The phase diagrams of several binary mixtures consisting of cyanobiphenyls and different terminally non-polar mesogenic compounds exhibit induced smectic A phases. The smectic A layer spacing, d, of these induced phases have been investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering as a function of the molar fraction xi . Large deviations of the layer spacings from the additivity rule d mix = σ xidi , have been observed in all mixed systems. Assuming a dimerization of the terminally polar compounds, the degree of association β(x) was calculated as a function of composition for different dimerization constants. The theoretical relations d mix(x) obtained from the calculated β(x) values do not fit the experimental curves for d(x). This fact can be interpreted by the formation of weak complexes between the polar and the terminally non-polar molecules of the binary mixtures. This kind of complexing seems to be responsible for the formation of induced smectic phases of the SAd-type and might disturb the monomer-dimer equilibrium 2M p D p of the polar compounds.  相似文献

Among unsymmetric oligomesogens, chiral dimers formed by connecting a cholesteryl ester fragment with various aromatic mesogenic cores through a polymethylene spacer have been attracting much attention due to their remarkable thermal behaviour. In particular, dimers containing a diphenylacetylene segment having an alkoxy chain have shown interesting mesomorphic behaviour. In view of this a new series of unsymmetric dimers consisting of a diphenylacetylene moiety having an alkyl chain and a cholesteryl ester unit joined through a paraffinic spacer have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties characterized. The lengths of the central methylene spacer (C3, C4, C5 and C7) as well as that of the alkyl chain (n-butyl, n-pentyl, n-hexyl and n-heptyl) have been varied to establish structure–property relationships. These investigations have revealed that all the dimers exhibit smectic A, twist grain boundary and chiral neamtic (N*) phases with the exception of one of the dimers for which only the N* phase was observed. Some differences in the mesomorphic properties of the unsymmetric dimers containing odd or even parity methylene spacers have been observed. The majority of dimers having an even (C4) parity paraffinic spacer show a blue phase while the dimers with odd (C3, C5 and C7) parity spacers exhibit the chiral smectic (SmC*) phase. In some cases, the SmC* phase exists well below (?60°C) and above room temperature.  相似文献

With the aim of developing new oligothiophene-based liquid crystals involving hydrogen bonding, new terthiophene derivatives containing an alkylamide group, N,N'-distearyl-2,2' : 5',2"-terthiophene-5,5"-dicarboxamide (DNC183T) and N,N'-dialkyl-5,5"-dibromo-2,2' : 5',2"-terthiophene-4,4"-dicarboxamides (DNCnDBr3T, n = 5, 8, 16, 18), were designed and synthesized, and their thermal behaviour examined. While DNC183T did not exhibit liquid crystallinity, DNCnDBr3T compounds with n = 8, 16, 18 were found to form smectic A phases. In addition to liquid crystal behaviour, crystal polymorphism was also observed for DNC16DBr3T. It is shown that both the position of the amido group and the alkyl chain length greatly affect liquid crystal phase formation. The absence of liquid crystallinity in the corresponding ester derivatives suggests that intermolecular hydrogen bonding also plays a role in the formation of liquid crystal phases in the DNCnDBr3T system.  相似文献

The phase diagram of a binary mixture composed of compounds, one having NCS terminal group (4DBT, showing smectic A1 phase) and the other with CN terminal group (11OCB, showing smectic Ad phase), exhibiting induced nematic phase in a certain concentration range (0.100 < x4DBT < 0.951) is reported here. Results of the static dielectric parameters measurement on this binary system within the entire mesomorphic range are presented. Evidence of strong pretransitional behaviour near the nematic–isotropic (N–I) phase transition, indicating the influence of tricritical behaviour, is observed. Precise determination of discontinuity (ΔT) and the critical exponent (α) of N–I phase transition have been carried out. Moreover, the order parameter critical exponent β is correctly predicted by the tricritical hypothesis through the dielectric anisotropy data for all the investigated mixtures.  相似文献

Abstract

The first eleven members of the homologous series of α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)-ω-(4-n-alkylanilinebenzylidene-4'-oxy)hexanes have been synthesized. The compounds are all enantiotropic nematogens and, with the exception of the heptyl, octyl and nonyl homologues, exhibit smectic phases. The thermal stability of the smectic A phase initially increases with the length of the terminal alkyl chain, passes through a maximum and then falls dramatically before disappearing. The smectic A phase subsequently reappears with the decyl homologue which has the highest smectic A-nematic transition temperature of the series. In order to understand this unusual behavior we have determined the entropies of transition for the compounds and we have measured the layer spacing of the smectic A phase for three of them.  相似文献

Abstract

Experimental results referring to the transformation of smectic phases, mainly smectic A, into nematic and reentrant nematic phases are reviewed. A new explanation of some experimental results is proposed. Factors which are responsible for the depression of smectic phases in mixtures of polar mesogens are discussed and the possibility of forming mixtures with a broad temperature range of nematic phase from smectic compounds, which can be useful for liquid crystal displays (LCDs), is shown. A nematic gap observed in some cases between monolayer (SA1) or monolayer and partially bilayer (SAd) smectics results from the differences in the organization of the molecules in the smectic layers. It is concluded that polar phase from smectic A1 phases can be divided into two groups: (a) the first one is characteristic for compounds with the -NCS, -F, -CI, -I or ?COC m H2m + 1 terminal group. The spacing of the smectic layer slowly expands with the increase in alkyl chain length and the structure of the smectic A1 phase slowly changes to be more like the smectic Ad phase (d/1 > 1). It is proposed that such a smectic is called an enhanced monolayer smectic (SA1e (b) the second one is typical for compounds with the -CN terminal group. This kind of smectic A1 phase is rapidly transformed into the smectic Ad phase with increasing alkyl chain length. These latter monolayer mesogens easily form the reentrant nematic phase when they are mixed with other polar smectic mesogens.  相似文献

A series of 1‐alkyl‐3‐methylimidazolium fluorohydrogenate salts (CxMIm(FH)2F, x=8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18) have been characterized by thermal analysis, polarized optical microscopy, IR spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and anisotropic ionic conductivity measurements. Liquid crystalline mesophases with a smectic A interdigitated bilayer structure are observed from C10 to C18, showing a fan‐like or focal conic texture. The temperature range of the mesophase increases with the increase in the alkyl chain length (from 10.1 °C for C10MIm(FH)2F to 123.1 °C for C18MIm(FH)2F). The distance between the two layers in the smectic structure gradually increases with increasing alkyl chain length and decreases with increasing temperature. Conductivity parallel to the smectic layers is around 10 mS cm?1 regardless of the alkyl chain length, whereas that perpendicular to the smectic layers decreases with increasing alkyl chain length because of the thicker insulating sheet with the longer alkyl chain.  相似文献

Some new unsymmetrical dimers consisting of a cholesteryl ester moiety, covalently linked to either a 4′-(1,3-difluoro-4-n-octyloxy) biphenyloxy or a 4′-(2,3-difluoro-4-n-decyloxy) biphenyloxy through odd-even parity paraffinic central spacers, have been synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic behaviour. Except for one, all the dimers exhibit enantiotropic smectic A, twist grain boundary (TGB) and chiral nematic mesophases. Five of the eight unsymmetrical dimers synthesized show a chiral smectic C (SmC*) phase. Interestingly in some of the compounds the SmC* exists over a wide temperature range including room temperature. Among the eight compounds, a dimer having a C7 central paraffinic spacer and a C8 alkoxy terminal chain shows an enantiotropic twist grain boundary with SmC* blocks (TGBC*) phase. It appears that the variation in the length of the spacer has a remarkable influence on the phase transition temperatures as well as on the mesomorphic behaviour.  相似文献

Abstract

A homologous series of di(4-alkyloxybenzoates) of 4,4′-dimercaptobiphenyl: CH3(CH2) n-1O?C6H4?COS?C6H4?C6H4?SOC?C6H4?O(CH2) n-1CH3,n=1–7, has been synthesized and the thermotropic liquid-crystalline behaviour investigated. All compounds exhibit enantiotropic mesomorphism over a remarkable temperature range. While the mesophase thermal stability is moderately higher than that found for the corresponding oxygenated analogues, the smectic stability is definitely lower. In fact, all the compounds are nematic but smectic mesomorphism (SC) is observed for n = 7. Compounds with n = 6 or 7 exhibit enantiotropic highly ordered smectic (or disordered crystal) phases, probably SG in type.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterisation of a series of new rod-shaped liquid crystal (LC), 2-(4-alkyloxybenzylidenamino)benzothiazoles possessing even number of carbon atoms at the alkyloxy chain (CnH2n?+?1O-, n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) are reported. The molecular structures of title compounds were elucidated using FTIR and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The phase behaviour of these new compounds was characterised and studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. Lower members (n = 2, 4 and 6) did not exhibit mesophase. Octyloxy derivative was monotropic LC. Enantiotropic smectic A phase was observed from n-decyloxy derivatives onward to the last homologous synthesised.  相似文献

A series of symmetrical dimers consisting of salicylaldimine moieties connected by flexible alkylene central spacer via ether linkages has been synthesized. In order to validate the empirical rule suggested by Date et al. to account for the smectic behaviour of such dimers, the chain length of the terminal alkoxy chain has been kept constant (C8) while the number of methylene units in the central spacer was varied from C3 to C11. Another aim of the present investigation was to understand structure-property relationship in these dimers in which the salicylaldimine mesogenic segment has been used for the first time in dimers. The mesomorphic behaviour of these dimers was evaluated using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and the structure of some of the mesophases has been further investigated with the help of X-ray diffraction. Our studies reveal that the dimers consisting of 3 to 8 methylene units in the flexible spacer show only smectic (smectic C and smectic A) phases. For the dimers containing 4, 6 and 8 methylene units in the central spacer, a unique filament growth pattern has been observed in the smectic A phase while cooling from the isotropic phase. The dimers containing of C9 to C11 methylene groups exhibit the nematic phase in addition to smectic modifications. This observation indicates that when the terminal chains are shorter than the spacer, the tendency to form smectic phases is not fully extinguished but is perhaps reduced.  相似文献

A series of bent-core V-shaped mesogens consisting of salicylaldimine mesogenic segments have been synthesized and their mesomorphic behaviour characterized. In an attempt to understand structure–property relationships, the lengths of the terminal alkoxy chains have been varied from C2 to C12, C16 and C18, resulting in 13 new bent-core V-shaped molecules. The thermal behaviour of these new compounds has been investigated by optical microscopy, calorimetry and X-ray diffraction studies. In general the compounds show conventional mesophases similar to those shown by calamitic LCs. The materials exhibit good thermal stability, even though their melting and clearing transition temperatures are high as a result of the presence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the H-atom of the hydroxyl group and the N-atom of the imine functionality. The phase appearing in the first member of the series with ethoxy chains is a nematic, while the C3 to C6 derivatives exhibit a smectic A phase as well as a nematic phase. The higher homologues, C7 to C12, C16 and C18, show only the smectic A phase. X-ray studies reveal that the SmA phase has a partially bilayer (interdigitated) structure. Remarkably, in some cases, the smectic A phase supercools well below room temperature. It is apparent from our studies that increasing the length of the alkoxy chains promotes smectic behaviour, in agreement with the general observation made for such bent-core molecules.  相似文献

X-ray diffraction data for four different liquid crystalline side group methacrylic polymers based on the ω-hexyloxysalicylaldimine moiety with p-alkyl or p-alkyloxy terminal substituents are presented. For the decyloxy, dodecyloxy and octyl derivatives, a smectic C2 phase occurs over a broad temperature range, while for the tetradecyl derivative a complex behaviour was observed on cooling from the isotropic state. In this last case a smectic Ad phase arises, changing to a smectic C2 phase and a further smectic Cd phase. A possible explanation for the observed phenomena is presented.  相似文献

A new series of symmetrical S-shaped oligomers 4,4?-bis(ω-2-(ω-[(bromophenyl)diazenyl]-alkoxy)phenoxy)hexylbiphenyl consisting of two different spacers (inner -(CH2)6- and outer -(CH2)n-) have been synthesised. Their physical, thermal and texture observation over various transition temperatures are reported. The outer spacers for these compounds vary from n = 4 to n = 9. The oligomers with even number of members exhibit monotropic phase in which the compound with n = 4 shows nematic (N) phase whilst those with members n = 6 and 8 exhibit N and smectic A (SmA) phases. However, the homologs with odd number of members display enantiotropic phase in which the compound with n = 5 exhibits N and smectic phases whereas the members with n = 7 and 9 are predominantly smectogenic. The temperature range of N phase for even-numbered member decreased with elongation of the outer spacer. The smectic phase stability among the members in the present series increases when the outer spacer n is increased from 5 to 8.  相似文献

The crystal structure of the compound 4-cyanobiphenyl-4′-hexylbiphenyl carboxylate (6CBB), which exhibits both monolayer smectic A and nematic phases, has been determined by direct methods using single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The structure is triclinic with the space group P-1 and Z=2. The unit cell parameters are a=9.3511(7)?Å, b=11.2456(7)?Å, c=13.1417(6)?Å, α=85.872(4)°, β=76.258(5)° and γ=70.697(5)°. The molecule is found to be slightly bow-shaped although the alkyl chain is in all-trans conformation. The phenyl rings in 6CBB are non-coplanar. The packing of the molecules in the crystalline state is found to be a precursor to the smectic A phase structure. Comparison of crystal structures and packing of the four-ring 6CBB with those of the two-ring nCB or nOCB compounds has been made to explain the observed phase behaviour.  相似文献

The thermal and optical properties of two series of unsymmetrical liquid crystalline compounds based on an isoxazole ring are described. Of these materials, 3–7 and 8–12 displayed strong absorption at 285 nm and a weak blue fluorescence in solution at around 377 nm, even with the presence of a high conjugated core. The fluorescence quantum yields observed varied from low to moderate (Φ F ?=?1–62%), with large Stokes shifts (60–178 nm). All compounds exhibited liquid crystalline behaviour with a wide mesomorphism temperature range and characteristic phases of calamitic compounds, among them smectic A (SmA), smectic C (SmC) and nematic (N) phases. Their phases were characterised using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. In addition, with X-ray diffraction experiments, layer spacing of 33.3–40.0 Å were observed for the smectic phases.  相似文献

Three new series of bent-shaped molecules with 4-chlororesorcinol, 4-bromoresorcinol or 4-fluororesorcinol as the central unit, and azobenzene with different alkoxy chain length as side arms were synthesised. The mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. A representative example has also been characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. It is found that almost all of the materials prepared are monotropic liquid crystalline. Depending on the substituent at the central unit and on the chain length nematic phases, B6 phases, a B4-like dark conglomerate phase and a modulated/undulated anticlinic SmC phase were found. As a unique feature, upon reducing the chain length a transition from nematic to B6-type smectic phases was observed, which is reverse to usually observed phase sequences. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy was also performed to study the effect of light-induced trans–cis-isomerisation on the prepared compounds.  相似文献
