The synthesis of chiral side chain liquid crystalline polyacrylates with a two-stereogenic centre from L-alpha-aminoacid is described. The chiral tail is 2-chloroalcohol obtained from L-isoleucine and the spacer group has either four or eleven methylene units. The mesogenic moiety is derived from phenyl benzoate. The stereochemistry of the key intermediate (2 S ,3 S )-(+)-4- [1-(2-chloro-3-methyl)pentyloxy]phenyl benzoate ( 6 ) obtained by a Mitsunobu reaction was established by single crystal X-ray analysis. This result indicates that the nucleophilic displacement of chiral diazonium salts proceeds with overall retention of configuration. The liquid crystalline behaviour of polyacrylates P 13 and P 14 was investigated by DSC, optical microscopy, small angle X-ray scattering and depolarized light scattering. The polyacrylate P 13 , with eleven methylene units in the spacer, exhibits a chiral smectic A phase whereas the polyacrylate P 14 , with a spacer containing four methylene units, displays a chiral nematic phase.  相似文献

The synthesis of side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes containing either 4-[(S)-2-methyl-1-butoxy]phenyl 4-(alkenyloxy)benzoate or laterally fluoro-, chloro-, bromo-, and methoxy-substituted 4-[(S)-2-methyl-1-butoxy]phenyl 4-(alkenyloxy)benzoate mesogenic side groups is presented. The mesomorphic properties of the synthesized polymers have been characterized by optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The effects of spacer length and lateral substituent on the mesomorphic properties of the obtained polymers are examined. The five polymers which contain three methylene units in the spacers show no mesophase, while the five polymers which contain eleven methylene units in the spacer display smectic mesomorphism. Among the other fifteen polymers which contain respectively four, five, or six methylene units in the spacers, those with small fluoro and chloro substituents reveal respectively an SA phase, while those with bulky bromo and methoxy substituents show no liquid crystalline behavior. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing a bulky lateral substituent into the mesogenic core of a polymer depresses the tendency to form a mesophase. Furthermore, the technique of thermally stimulated current has been used to study the dipolar relaxation mechanisms in a side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxane. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Small angle X-ray scattering was used to examine the new chiral side chain liquid crystalline polyacrylates (P4M and P11M) and their mixtures (2 wt %) in the low molar mass nematogenics 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and 4'-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB). Complementary data were obtained by polarizing optical microscopy. In agreement with previous studies, the mesophases of the bulk polymers show a dependence on the aliphatic spacers linking the mesogenic units to the polymer backbone. Chiral nematic and smectic A1 phases were observed for the polyacrylates with four (P4M) and eleven (P11M) methylene units as spacers, respectively. In solution with 5CB and 8CB, P4M exhibits an injected smectic phase, whereas P11M maintains the smectic arrangement already observed in the bulk, with swollen smectic layers. In all the mixtures, layer stability was found to depend on the liquid crystal used as solvent, as well as on the temperature. At temperatures corresponding to the nematic 5CB and 8CB, the coexistence of two mesophases was observed in the mixtures. Moreover, with the liquid crystal solvents in the isotropic phase, microstructures suspended in the solvent matrix containing the liquid crystalline polymer in the smectic arrangement were detected.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline α-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]- ω -(4′-methoxybiphenyl-4-oxy)alkane hydrochlorides with different spacer lengths (6, 8, 10 methylene units) have been synthesized and characterized by NMR, DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The melting temperatures of the hydrochlorides decrease with increasing number of methylene units in the spacer. Highly ordered and very viscous liquid crystalline (LC1) smectic phases are formed on melting. Upon further heating these phases are transformed into a less viscous smectic C phase (LC2). The temperature of the LC1-LC2 transition decreases and the temperature of the LC2 to isotropic phase transition (LC2-I transition) increases with increasing number of methylene units in the spacer.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a series of novel dimesogenic compounds containing the cholesteryl ester unit and a phenyl benzoate group are reported. The two mesogenic units of these compounds are linked through dicarboxylic ester bonds, with alkylene spacer lengths of 2, 4, 6 and 8 methylene units. The chemical structures and liquid crystalline properties of this series of compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, hot stage-coupled polarizing microscopy and DSC. The results show that this series of compounds are cholesteric liquid crystals over a wide range, both during heating and cooling, and they exhibit iridescent colours in the liquid crystalline state.  相似文献

To investigate the effect of spacer length and linkages between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal group on the molecular interaction and physical properties of polymers, two series of novel side chain liquid crystalline polyacrylates were synthesized. These were composed of liquid crystalline monomers with six or eleven methylene segments as spacers, and chiral monomers end capped with menthyl or cholesteryl groups. Liquid crystalline phases of the polymers were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy, and confirmed with X‐ray diffractometry. Color image recording of the synthesized polymer films was achieved using a thermal treatment, and then fixed by quenching. This investigation demonstrates that the introduction of carbonate linking groups between the rigid mesogenic core and terminal group decreases both the lateral molecular interaction and thermal stability of the liquid crystalline polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

Ferroelectric liquid-crystalline side chain polymers containing polyacrylate or polysiloxane main chains, a mesogenic unit of three aromatic cores and chiral end groups were synthesized and characterized by D.S.C., optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Polyacrylates with a flexible spacer of eleven methylene groups exhibit fast bistable switching in oriented samples (2 to 4μm cells) with response times of some ms at low D.C. voltages, making these polymers interesting for the fabrication of electrooptical devices. Somewhat longer response times were found for the first switchable polysiloxanes. In this case some problems in obtaining well orientated samples have to be solved.  相似文献

Four series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing oligooxyethylene spacers have been synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical polarized microscopy (POM). The properties of the liquid crystalline phase were investigated as a function of spacer units, numbers of core aromatic rings, and different terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that (i) the phase transition temperature decreased with the increasing oligooxyethylene spacer unit, (ii) the liquid crystalline phases were enhanced in three phenyl ring system than in two phenyl ring system, and (iii) ferroelectric liquid crystals containing different terminal asymmetric moieties exhibited novel mesophase phenomena. A twist grain boundary phase (TGBA phase) was observed in some compounds of this study. Furthermore, a wide temperature chiral smectic Crange including room temperature was achieved.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligomethylene spacers (n 3, 4, 6, 8) were synthesized and characterized. The chiral moieties are the (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl and (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl groups. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarized microscopy. Spontaneous polarization (P) of the liquid crystals was measured by an automated polarization tester over a wide temperature range. The mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of spacer length and position of the chiral centre. It is found that the phase transition temperature decreases with increasing number of oligomethylene units. The phase behaviours of the LC with (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl are more complex than those with (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl, due to the flexible tail in the former. Moreover, the spontaneous polarization depends mainly on the position of the chiral centre, with Ps 15 nC cm 2 and Ps 60 123 nC cm 2 for the series s with (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl and (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl groups, respectively.  相似文献

A new series of ferroelectric liquid crystals and side chain liquid crystalline polymers based on halogen-containing chiral centres has been synthesized. Chemical structures were analysed by NMR. Liquid crystal phases were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The behaviour of the liquid crystalline phases was investigated as a function of spacer units and differing terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that phase transition temperatures decreased with increasing length of the oligooxyethylene spacer unit. Differing terminal asymmetric moieties led to differing mesophase phenomena. Furthermore, a wide temperature range (including room temperature) of a chiral smectic C phase was achieved.  相似文献

The synthesis of methacrylate esters of 4-cyanophenyl-(4-(ω-hydroxyalkyloxy)) cinnamates, with spacer lengths of 2 and 6 methylene units and the synthesis of the corresponding acrylate ester with a spacer of 2 methylene units are described. The methacrylate monomers were polymerized by free radical polymerization, both as homopolymers and as copolymers with the analogous benzoate monomer of spacer length 6. The acrylate ester could not be polymerized successfully under the same reaction conditions. Polymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermo-optic observations. Of the monomers prepared, only the cinnamate with a hexamethylene spacer shows a mesophase, seen on supercooling of the melt. All of the polymers prepared were liquid crystalline, with smectic behavior predominating in the polymethacrylates with the longer spacer group. A narrow nematic region is seen just below the clearing temperature with a range of 3–9°C, nematic character is increased in the copolymer series with the degree of incorporation of the cinnamate monomer with the spacer group of length 2.  相似文献

Liquid crystalline side group copolymers containing cholesteryl and S-(-)-chloropropionyloxybiphenyl groups were synthesized and investigated by size exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR spectroscopy, polarization microscopy, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The spacer of the cholesteryl-containing side groups was changed by the substitution of two methylene groups by ether groups. The existence of a cholesteric phase on copolymerization of two monomers containing chiral tail groups, from which the homopolymers exhibit only smectic phases, could be observed. This cholesteric phase only exists over a narrow range of copolymer composition. The temperature dependence of the reflection wavelength for the cholesteric phase was determined. For the cholesteryl-containing homopolymer, an SA bilayer phase was observed, whereas the S-(-)-chloropropionyloxybi2 phenyl homopolymer showed a higher ordered SB phase below an SA monolayer phase. The layer periodicities of the SA phases of the copolymers depend on the composition. The substitution of two methylene groups of the spacer by ether groups led to disappearance of the cholesteric phase. Simultaneously, over a small range of copolymer composition a biphasic region was obtained.  相似文献

A new series of non-symmetric chiral isoflavone-based liquid crystalline dimers, α-(2-methylbutyl-4′-(4″-phenyloxy)benzoate)-ω-(3-(4′-decyloxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-oxy)alkanes, with 3–12 carbon atoms in the alkyloxy spacer, have been synthesised. A pronounced odd–even effect for the phase transition temperatures upon varying the spacer length was observed. The short dimers exhibited monolayer smectic A (SmA) and smectic C (SmC*) phases while for longer homologues a chiral nematic (N*) phase was found. The temperature range of the nematic phase was broadened with elongation of the alkyl spacer. Stabilisation of the nematic phase resulted from competition between the monolayer and intercalated smectic structures. The SmA–SmC* phase transition was second order for all studied compounds with a cross over to the de Vries type behaviour for the shortest homologue.  相似文献

Novel ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds, containing the (S)-2-methyl-l -butyl (4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate mesogenic group and an oligooxyethylene spacer, were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of these materials were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurement. The results indicate that all members of this series exhibit a very broad temperature mesophase range (reaching a maximum around 210°C) including a blue phase (BP), cholesteric (Ch), twist grain boundary A (TGBA), chiral smectic C (S*c), and smectic X (Sx) phases. The mesomorphic properties are discussed and a comparison is made with three phenyl rings of ester core analogues.  相似文献

A new series of halogen-containing side chain ferroelectric liquid crystal polymers was synthesized. Mesophases were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and molecular simulation. The behaviour of the liquid crystalline phase was investigated with variation of chiral centres, spacer units and grafted ratios. It was found that the thermal stability and temperature range of the chiral smectic C phase decreased with increasing length of the oligo-oxyethylene spacer, and decreasing mesogenic group content. The bulky substituent attached to the chiral centre reduces molecular packing in smectic liquid crystal phases, which disturbs the orientation of the side chain liquid crystal polymer. Furthermore, the influence of molecular structure on electrooptical properties of FLCPs has been studied by broad band dielectric spectroscopy (from 0.1 to 1 ×10 6 Hz).  相似文献

Side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing both mesogenic (carbazolylmethylene)aniline and (4′-nitrobenzylidene)aniline units with various spacer groups were prepared to examine effects of the structure of spacer groups on the liquid crystalline properties. The copolymer containing (R)-(+)-2-methylpropylene as a chiral group in the spacer unit induced a smectic phase; the copolymer with a trimethylene spacer of similar length to the chiral spacer exhibited a nematic phase. Smectic phases were observed for the copolymer containing the chiral spacer group when the proportion of the carbazolyl group was in the range of 0.55–0.88. For example, the copolymer with the proportion of the carbazolyl group of 0.68 expressed the smectic phase from 88° to 167°C. This isotropic temperature was 37° higher than the calculated value (130°C) based on an assumed copolymer composition without the electron donor–acceptor interaction. Thus, it is assumed that for the chiral copolymer containing both electron donor and acceptor groups, the thermal stability and the induction of the smectic phase were caused by both the electron donor–acceptor interaction and the existence of the chiral group in the spacer unit. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
