Liquid-crystalline 3,3'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl derivatives with long 4-(alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl (-C=C-C6H4-OR) groups in the 5,5'-positions were synthesized by palladium-catalysed crosscoupling reactions. The compounds exhibit exclusively nematic behaviour; for example, the hexyl derivative showed a nematic phase over the temperature range 145.2-205.0°C. On increasing the length of the terminal chain, the transition temperatures were lowered; for example, the hexadecyl derivative was nematic in the range 117.0-126.8°C.  相似文献

Isoxazole-based bent-core liquid crystals (LCs) derived from naturally occurring curcumin were synthesised and their LC properties were investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. Five compounds, including a branched alkyl chain derivative, were prepared and characterised. These derivatives exhibit enantiotropic mesophases. While lower homologues display wide-temperature-range nematic phase, a longer-chain derivative 3d shows smectic C phase in addition to the nematic phase. The bent angle in these compounds is in between calamitic LCs and banana LCs. Therefore, the molecules escape from polar order packing observed in typical bent-core LCs. Increasing the length of alkyl chain reduces both melting and isotropic temperatures in the series. However, the compound with branched alkyl chains exhibits significant reduction in the nematic-isotropic temperature only. Detailed XRD experiments confirm the presence of the N phase in the lower homologues and SmC phase in a higher homologue.  相似文献

The induction of liquid crystal orientation through mechanical stretching was investigated for polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) by means of infrared dichroism. Using a nematic liquid crystal BL006 and polyacrylic acid as the polymer matrix, it was possible to stretch the PDLC films with BL006 in either the isotropic or the nematic phase. After cooling the films under strain to room temperature, the molecular orientation of BL006 was found to be much higher for films that contained isotropic liquid droplets of BL006 at the time of stretching than for films that had nematic droplets. Stretching PDLC films with isotropic droplets results in no molecular orientation, but the orientation is induced during the subsequent cooling when BL006 goes through the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition. Interestingly for PAA/BL006, the nematic director orients along the long axes of the elongated droplets despite liquid crystal anchoring perpendicular to the polymer interface.  相似文献

Novel liquid crystalline copoly(ester imide)s were synthesized via polyesterification of triethyleneglycol bis(4-carboxyphenyl) ether ( 1e ), diacetoxybiphenyl, and diacids with imide moieties. The effects of composition on the changes of Tg, Tm, and Ti were examined by global TSC and DSC. Thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) found that 4a–d and 5a–g possess higher thermal stability. Strong stir opalescence phenomenon and observations from polarized optical microscopy identified that 2b–e and 3a–d possess the typical schlieren texture of an enantiotropic nematic mesophase. The birefrigent melts of 4a–d and 5a–g, however, displayed particular liquid crystalline behavior. Copolymers with higher aromatic imide ring content ( 4a–d, 5a–g ) form a layered structure and an enantiotropic smectic mesophase in the melting state. The melt viscosity of the semetic mesophase was higher than the nematic mesophase which was observed by capillary rheometer. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We synthesised 1,2-bis(6-alkoxy-2-naphthyl)acetylene as a new dinaphthylacetylene liquid crystal (LC) compound with alkoxy tails of length m (DNA–OCm) and characterised their phase behaviour by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, where all compounds exhibited a nematic phase. Also, we measured the actual, and not extrapolated, Δn values of this target compound, and our results show the birefringence potential of the pure LC compound. They have high birefringence values, with the highest value of approximately 0.5 obtained for DNA–OC2 at 550 nm at 10°C above the nematic?crystal transition temperature.  相似文献

The preparation of nematic liquid crystals mixtures results in changing of molecular relaxations in comparison to pure substances. Typical example is the creation of dual-frequency nematic liquid crystals using a base mixture and functional admixtures. In this paper, we present how dielectric properties of starting compounds change at mixture preparation. Three dual-frequency nematic mixtures of different composition were prepared and examined by means of dielectric spectroscopy in a wide frequency (100 Hz to 10 MHz) and temperature range (170°C to ?60°C). Parameters of detected modes for pure compounds and final mixtures were calculated and their relationships with crossover frequency are discussed.  相似文献

A new series of liquid crystal (LC) monomers – not only contain a double bond but also contain an azo group – were designed and synthesised. The length of side groups in the LC monomers containing azobenzene ester varied from 1 to 2 methylene units, and the length of the substituted groups in the main chain varied from 1 to 3 methylene units. The molecular structures of the intermediates and target compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectrum and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The thermal phase behaviour of the LC monomers was investigated by polar optical microscopy coupled with hot stage and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). In this paper, the effect on the LC zone with the substituents were investigated, and with the increased methylene of main chain, the melting point and the phase transition temperature of the substance will be lowered and LC regions will be narrower.  相似文献

Four new epoxy monomers have been synthesized and characterized as part of a program to prepare novel liquid crystal thermoset (LCT) materials. Three of the new epoxy monomers contained a biphenyl mesogen and were not liquid crystalline (LC). The remaining epoxy monomer, which contained a 1,4-dibenzoyloxybenzene mesogen, was synthesized in an overall yield of 30% and displayed a broad (83°C) nematic liquid crystalline phase. The new liquid crystalline epoxy monomer was cured at 120°C and postcured at 175°C with a stoichiometric amount of 1,4-phenylenediamine. The thermal transitions of the resulting LCT were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light optical microscopy (POM), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and wide angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD) as a function of cure time and temperature. A process characterization diagram was constructed which shows that LCTs based on this new LC monomer can be processed in the liquid crystalline phase over a broad range of times and temperatures. Qualitative agreement with previous epoxy LCT results was found, as LCT's with smectic phases and without clearing temperatures were observed at long cure times (high crosslink densities), whereas nematic phases with clearing temperatures predominated in networks at short cure times (low crosslink densities). © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of new chalcones with four aromatic rings is synthesised and characterised. The chemical structures of chalcones are evaluated by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The compounds were investigated for liquid crystalline properties using differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy with hot stage. The results indicate that the formation of mesophase type is dependent on the alkyl chain length at one end of the molecule. Compounds 9a–d with relatively shorter chains show SmA and nematic mesophases, whereas 9e–g exhibit SmC and SmA mesophases. Compound 9h having a cyano group at one end, exhibit SmA and nematic mesophases.  相似文献

The synthesis is described of four new chiral liquid crystalline monomers (M2–M5 ) and their corresponding side‐chain homopolysiloxanes (P2–P5 ) containing menthyl groups. Chemical structures were characterised using FT‐IR or 1H NMR spectra, and specific optical rotations were evaluated with a polarimeter. The phase behaviour and mesomorphic properties of the new compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy, UV/visible/NIR spectrocopy and X‐ray diffraction. The monomers and homopolymers with more aryl segments showed noticeably lower specific optical rotation value. The monomers M2–M5 formed a cholesteric or blue phase when a flexible spacer was inserted between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups by reducing the steric effect. M2–M5 revealed enantiotropic cholesteric phase. Moreover, M2 also exhibited a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, and M4 also exhibited a cubic blue phase on cooling. The selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core for M2–M5 . P2–P5 exhibited SmA phases, and the mesogenic moieties were ordered in smectic orientation with their centres of gravity in planes. Melting or glass transition temperature and the clearing temperature increased, and the mesophase temperature range widened with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core.  相似文献

A series of side-chain liquid crystal (LC) polysiloxanes were synthesised with Poly(methylhydrogeno)siloxane, 4?-(undec-10-enoyloxy) biphenyl – 4 – yl 4- (trifluoromethyl) benzoate (Mth) and a chiral nematic (N*) LC monomer 1-allyl 10-(cholesteryl)-decanedioate (Mch). The chemical structures and LC properties of the monomers and polymers were characterised by FTIR, 1H-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, POM and X-ray diffractometer. Mch is monotropic N* LC. The homopolymer derived from monomer Mch is enantiotropic N* LC. Monomer Mth is a smectic A liquid crystal. The copolymers derived from Mch and Mth are N* LCs. The temperatures at which 5% weight loss occurred are greater than 300°C for all the fluoro-containing polymers, and the residue weights of the samples at 600°C increased slightly as the content of trifluoromethyl mesogens increased in the polymers. The glass transition temperatures of the polymers increased as trifluoromethyl mesogens increased, too. The N*–I phase transition temperatures show a negative deviate from ideal or linear behaviour. The values of the enthalpy changes for the cholesteryl containing polymers are rather low and this is attributed to the biaxiality of cholesteryl moiety which tends to reduce the change in the orientational order at the N*–I transition. Compared to the monomers, the polymers show wider mesophase region.  相似文献

This article describes the synthesis and characterization of new liquid crystalline thermosets having a twin structure. Nematic epoxy-terminated monomers based on a phenyl benzoate twin mesogen connected by an alkylene spacer were synthesized for these studies. In addition, an epoxy-terminated monomer based on a 1,4-bis(benzoyloxy)phenylene mesogen was synthesized to determine the effect of the position of the mesogen on the final network structure. The diepoxy monomer made with phenyl benzoate twin mesogens connected with an alkylene spacer formed a smectic-like network when cured with diamines. This smectic organization appeared even though the diepoxy monomer itself showed only a nematic mesophase over a narrow temperature range. The presence of crosslinks at both ends of the mesogens helped to retain a uniform spacing between crosslinking sites during the curing reaction, and aided formation of the smectic layer arrangement. The epoxy monomer possessing a 1,4-bis(benzoyloxy)phenylene mesogen and two epoxidized alkylene end groups on both sides of the mesogen formed a stable nematic mesophase. However, in contrast to the twin epoxies, the latter epoxy when reacted with diamines tended to produce a nematic-like network which was retained as the crosslinking reaction proceeded. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

An aromatic copolyester composed of 25 mol % phenyl hydroquinone, 10 mol % isophthalic acid, 40 mol % chloroterephthalic acid, and 25 mol % t-butyl hydroquinone (PICT) has been synthesized. This amorphous, glassy polymer is soluble in common organic solvents such as methylene chloride. Thin, solution-cast films may be prepared which are in a metastable, vitrified, optically isotropic state. On first heating of an isotropic film at 20°C/min in a calorimeter, one glass transition is observed at low temperature (approximately 49°C) and is ascribed to the glass/rubber transition of the metastable, isotropic polymer. This thermal event is followed by a small exotherm due to the development of order during the scan, which results in a second Tg at approximately 125°C. This Tg is associated with the glass/rubber transition of the ordered polymer. Nematic order can be developed by thermal annealing. The lower Tg increases toward the upper Tg as annealing time is increased. For an initially isotropic film annealed at 90°C, the increase of the lower Tg with annealing time and the increase in birefringence observed by optical microscopy are governed by similar kinetics. Isotropization occurs in the temperature range of 250–300°C. The nematic polymer is slightly more dense than its isotropic analog. No detectable differences between isotropic and nematic samples were observed in rotating frame proton spin lattice relaxation times. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We prepared a homologous series of H-shaped liquid crystals I-n and investigated their phase transition properties using optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds exhibited a nematic phase at room temperature. The phase transition behaviour is explained in terms of molecular shape anisotropy. Furthermore, those compounds were found to exhibit electro-optical switching in the isotropic liquid in the vicinity of the nematic–isotropic liquid transition, indicating that the microscopic nematic order with a certain coherence length of the molecules exists in the optically isotropic temperature range.  相似文献

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core 1,2-propanediol (PD) have been synthesised, termed as ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA, ABA-PD-TFBA, PBA-PD-TFBA and AA-PD-TFBA, respectively, in which one of the two mesogenic groups, the fluorinated mesogenic unit, was kept fix and the other arm was different. The intermediate compounds and LC dimers were characterised by FTIR, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results of the measurements indicated that ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA and ABA-PD-TFBA displayed optical activity and enantiotropic chiral nematic phase, and PBA-PD-TFBA was an enantiotropic nematic LC while AA-PD-TFBA was a monotropic LC, displaying both nematic phase and smectic A phase on cooling. The results indicated that PD was able to induce the chiral nematic phase, nevertheless, the rigidity of the mesogenic arm, the flexibility of the terminal group and even the type of the terminal chemical bond played an important effect on the thermal properties of the dimers, and even on the formation of the chiral nematic phase. It is also worth noting that C=C at the terminal helped to stabilise the LC phase.  相似文献

We have discovered that ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) can be used as a central unit for the synthesis of bent-core liquid crystals (BC LCs). Two series of EDOT-based BC LCs are prepared via Sonogashira coupling reaction. The mesophase behaviour of all the compounds was characterised using a combination of polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements. EDOT-based three-ring compounds were found to be nonliquid crystalline, while all the four derivatives of five-ring series, including a branched alkoxy chain derivative, display enantiotropic nematic phase over wide temperature range. The bent angle of these compounds is about 153°, which falls in between typical rod-like and banana liquid crystals. The transition temperature of branched alkoxy chain compound is lower than straight alkoxy chain compounds. The detailed XRD investigations of all the mesogens corroborate the presence of nematic phase.  相似文献

Random lasing in dye-doped nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) contained in a quartz cuvette was studied. With the pumping energy rising, random lasing with nonresonant feedback and resonant feedback emerge successively with the lasing threshold of 20 and 40 μJ, respectively. The lasing properties including fluctuation of the emission spectrum, divergence angle of emission, independence of the emission on the polarisation of the pump beam and the depolarisation of emission are distinct from those of dye-doped nematics confined in the sandwich structure cell or the capillary tube. The distinctions are associated with the thermal fluctuation of dielectric tensor since there is negligible surface anchoring for the nematics in the pump volume. This indicates that the anchoring state of NLCs is an important factor determining the random lasing properties.  相似文献

New five-ring hockey-stick liquid crystalline materials with 4-bromoresorcinol as the central core unit and an azobenzene-based side arm were synthesised and their mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and under a triangular wave electric field. Additional structural modification was done by introducing a lateral fluorine atom in the terminal ring of one of the side arms. It is found that regardless of the alkyl chain length or the lateral fluorine substitution, all of the prepared materials are liquid crystalline exhibiting nematic phases composed of cybotactic clusters of the SmC-type (NCybC) in addition to a monotropic SmC phase for the longest homologue.  相似文献

A new family of four-ring achiral bent-core compounds derived from 2-methyl 3-amino benzoic acid with the methyl group in the bent direction incorporated into the central core have been designed and synthesised. These compounds possess an alkoxy chain attached at only one end of the bent core molecule, while the other arm consists of a biphenyl moiety possessing a highly polar cyano-group. The molecular structure has been confirmed by elemental analysis and spectroscopic data, and the thermal behaviour and phase characterisation has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising microscopy. All the compounds exhibit a wide-range enantiotropic nematic phase. A comparison with non-mesomorphic unsubstituted and 4-methyl-substituted homologues is also presented.  相似文献
