Development of new liquid crystalline materials exhibiting interesting properties and phases continues to be an enabling enterprise in the forward march of their successful display and non-display applications. The design and synthesis of a homologous series of liquid crystalline bent-core compounds derived from the oxadiazole bisaniline moiety and the phase behavior of three members of the series that exhibit nematic, smectic C, and dark conglomerate phases is reported. The liquid crystalline phases exhibited by these mesogens are characterized using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and x-ray scattering techniques. All three homologs prepared exhibit the nematic phase. Interestingly, the homolog with short hexyl terminal chains exhibits only the nematic phase that is stable over a very broad, nearly 100 K wide, temperature range. The compound with terminal octyl chains shows the chiral dark conglomerate phase below the nematic phase despite the bent molecules being achiral. The homolog with dodecyl alkyl chains is found to possess the smectic-C and two additional lamellar phases besides the nematic phase. These compounds enrich the library of achiral bent-core materials capable of exhibiting chiral and nematic phases.  相似文献

Abstract

Vanadium pentoxide gels and sols, V2O5, nH2O, exhibit a ribbon-like structure. They form colloidal suspensions (also called Zocher phases or ‘tactophases’) which are clearly shown here to present a homogeneous lyotropic nematic phase for concentrations larger than ≈0·12mol 1?1. Classical threaded textures were observed in polarized light and small angle X-ray scattering patterns of oriented samples displayed a diffuse spot quite comparable to that of the Tobacco Mosaic Virus. For a sample of volume fraction φ ≈ 5 per cent, the V2O5 ribbons are separated by about 160 Å, so that the cross sectional area of the ribbons is about 1300 Å2, in agreement with previous estimations by electron microscopy.  相似文献

New homologous series of 4-isopropyl- and 4-isopropoxy- N -(4- n -alkoxysalicylidene)anilines were synthesized. The phase transitions of these homologues were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. No enantiotropic liquid crystalline phases were observed for homologues having a terminal isopropyl group; as the terminal alkoxyl chain is lengthened, smectic C and nematic phases occur monotropically. The members with an isopropoxy substituent exhibit an enantiotropic nematic phase as the terminal alkoxyl chain is lengthened; the octyloxy member exhibits a monotropic smectic C phase as well as an enantiotropic nematic state.  相似文献

The structures of bicelle mixtures composed of dimyristoyl and dihexanoyl phosphatidylcholines (DMPC and DHPC) with DMPC/DHPC molar ratios of 3.2 and 5 are characterized using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). Three phases, isotropic (I), chiral nematic (N*) and smectic (S) are observed as temperature (T) varies from 10 to 70 °C. The structure of the magnetically alignable N* phase, which was previously considered to be made up of discoidal micelles, is found to be composed of “ribbons”. Doping with the charged lipid, dimyristoyl phosphatidylglycerol (DMPG), which has the same 14:0 hydrocarbon chains as DMPC, results in a structural change of the aggregates where only the isotropic and smectic phases are observed. The smectic phase for the mixtures doped with DMPG is shear-alignable and follows one-dimensional swelling. However, at high-T zwitterionic DMPC/DHPC mixtures form multi-lamellar vesicles (MLV) with a relatively constant lamellar spacing of 66 Å, independent of water content.  相似文献

Four homologous series of 4-[2-[4-alkoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)ethynyl] phenyl trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl-1-carboxylates have been prepared. Their liquid crystalline behaviour was investigated by optical polarizing microscopy and DSC. Series A, B and C exhibit the nematic phase. The phase transition behaviour of series D is anomalous. The compounds of series D with a short alkoxy chain exhibit enantiotropic smectic A and nematic phases, while those with a long alkoxy chain exhibit only the nematic phase.  相似文献

The nematic liquid-crystalline phase exhibits average orientational order, with no positional organisation. So-called modulated nematic phases exhibit this same orientational order with an additional spatially periodic modulation of the nematic director, the most common of which is the twist-bend nematic phase. We report a pentaerythritol derived tetrapode which exhibits a nematic-like mesophase at ambient temperature, and we denote this new mesophase ‘NX’ to indicate a nematic phase of unknown structure. X-ray scattering experiments refute the possibility of positional order, yet optical textures are consistent with a periodic structure. We suggest that the mesophase exhibited by this material is a new type of nematic-like mesophase with some form of modulated structure. We find the NX phase to exhibit an electrooptic response consistent with a nematic-like phase.  相似文献

By using polarizing microscopy analysis we have found that several achiral homologues of the 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acids, displaying only the nematic phase, exhibit the optical properties of a chiral liquid crystal system. These acids possess a mesophase due to the formation of dimers via hydrogen bonding. The microtextural analysis was carried out in the temperature ranges of the isotropic, nematic and crystal phases. The nucleation of a chiral texture in small domains emerging on cooling in the isotropic phase was observed. These small domains are characterized by a conoscopic cross which presents an azimuth of 45° with respect to the polarizer axis, contrary to the usual nematic drops, for which the conoscopic cross is not rotated. On further cooling, these domains coalesce in the nematic phase close to the clearing point, thus building large chiral monodomains. Such coalesced droplets exhibit very thin stripe lines, as in the case of pure cholesterics with a tilted helix axis. Moreover, left- and right-handed chiral domains were observed, combined in regions partially separated by 'oily streaks', also typical of pure cholesterics. On cooling, the chiral nematic (N*) phase transformed through a pronounced texture transition into a normal nematic phase. However, the small chiral grains that formed from the isotropic phase are retained close to the surface, acting as 'memorizing centres'. With suitable boundary conditions, they can provide a macroscopic twist driven by the surface. Moreover, a twisted smectic B not present in the bulk phase diagram was found and interpreted as induced by the surface. Also in the crystal phase a strong memorization of the chiral N* texture was observed.  相似文献

The thermophysical properties of mixtures of poly (2-phenoxyethylacrylate) and 4-cyano-4′-pentyl-biphenyl, 5CB, are investigated using polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The polymer has a molar mass M w = 181 000 g mol -1 the low molecular mass liquid crystal exhibits a nematic to isotropic transition at 35.3°C and crystallizes below 23°C. The phase diagram exhibits miscibility gaps in certain regions of temperature and composition where coexisting nematic and isotropic phases are found. From a practical point of view when considering the electro-optical applications of these systems, it proves to be useful to know precisely the amount of small liquid crystal molecules dissolved in the polymer matrix and the concentration of polymer in the nematic phase. The former quantity has a mechanical impact due to a plasticizing effect, an optical impact since it changes the polymer refractive index, while the polymer in the nematic phase shifts the transition temperatures influencing the electro-optical response of the liquid crystal. The present work addresses these important aspects using POM and DSC.  相似文献

A new liquid crystal involving hydrogen bonding between 4-hexyloxybenzoic acid and 4-octyloxylphenylethynylpyridine has been investigated by DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The mesogen shows a nematic phase and an unknown liquid crystalline phase. The liquid crystal crystallizes with a triclinic space group P-1 with the parameters: a = 8.879(2)Å, b = 10.137(2)Å, c = 17.629(4)Å; α = 104.16(3)°, β = 95.47(3)°, γ = 101.48(3)°; V = 1490.3(6)Å3; Z = 2; F(000) = 572; μ = 0.076 mm?1; λ(MoKα) = 0.71073 Å; final R 1 = 0.0435. The complex is formed by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the current challenges in liquid crystal science is to understand the molecular factors leading to the formation of the intriguing twist-bend nematic phase (NTB) and determine its properties. During our earlier hunt for the NTB phase created on cooling directly from the isotropic phase and not the nematic phase, we had prepared 30 symmetric liquid crystal dimers. These had odd spacers and methylene links to the two mesogenic groups; desirable but clearly not essential features for the formation of the NTB. Here, we report the phases that the dimers exhibit and their transition temperatures as functions of both the lengths of the spacer and the terminal chains. In addition we describe the transitional entropies, their optical textures, the X-ray scattering patterns and the 2H NMR spectra employed in characterising the phases. All of which may lead to important properties of the twist-bend nematic phase.  相似文献

Two series of new liquid crystalline compounds containing a non-activated arylazoindolinobenzospiropyran, ABP-SPAB 1a-1e (series 1) and SPAP-ABPC 2a-2e (series 2), have been synthesized. These LC dyes were characterized by a differential scanning calorimetry polarizing optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electro-optical measurements. All but one of the series 1 compounds examined exhibit monotropic second and/or third transition liquid crystal phases on cooling from the isotropic liquid. In particular, ABP-SPAB 1b shows a monotropic SmC phase, in addition to a SmA phase. In series 2, most of the compounds exhibit a monotropic nematic phase on cooling. SPAP-ABPC 2c forms an enantiotropic nematic phase and a monotropic SmA phase; 2e shows enantiotropic nematic and SmA phases.  相似文献

A series of side‐chain liquid‐crystalline (LC) homopolymers of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with different degrees of polymerization were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which were prepared with a wide range of number‐average molecular weights from 5.1 × 103 to 20.6 × 103 with narrow polydispersities of around 1.17. Thermal investigation showed that the homopolymers exhibit two mesophases, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase, and the phase‐transition temperatures of the homopolymers increase clearly with increasing molecular weights. A series of novel LC coil triblock copolymers with narrow polydispersities was synthesized by ATRP, and their thermotropic phase behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The LC coil triblocks were designed to have an LC conformation of poly[6‐(4‐methoxy‐4′‐oxy‐azobenzene) hexyl methacrylate] with a wide range of molecular weights from 3.5 × 103 to 1.7 × 104 and the coil conformation of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (number‐average molecular weight: 6000 or 12,000) segment. Their characterization was investigated with 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectra, and gel permeation chromatography. Triblock copolymers exhibited a crystalline phase, a smectic phase, and a nematic phase. The phase‐transition temperatures from the smectic to nematic phase and from the nematic to isotropic phase increased, and the crystallization of PEG depressed with increasing molecular weight of the LC block. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The neat phases of a series of quaternary ammonium halides based on trioctadecylamine have been investigated by optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and H NMR spectroscopy. Phase behaviour depends primarily on the structure of the fourth substituent on nitrogen and the thermal history of the samples. For instance, the iodide salts with methyl, ethyl, or propyl as the fourth substituent form enantiotropic nematic phases, while those with a proton or a longer alkyl substituent exhibit complex phase behaviour that does not include a liquid crystalline phase. Possible reasons are advanced for the unprecedented formation of nematic phases.  相似文献

Optical rotation and circular dichroism measurements performed in the pretransitional isotropic region above the chiral smectic phases TGBA*, TGBC*, S*C, and S*A exhibited by 1-alkylalkyl 4'-(4'-n-alkoxyphenylpropioloyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylates are reported. These results revealed a high degree of increasing chiral ordering on cooling in the isotropic phase, particularly in the temperature region where a broad DSC peak appears. However, the behaviour of the pretransitional optical activity was unlike that commonly observed for chiral nematic or blue phase compounds and did not follow a simple Landau-de Gennes temperature dependence. Characteristic features of the pretransitional optical activity may aid in understanding the local structure of chiral smectic phases. Electric fields did not seem to influence the results significantly, but strong electric field-induced optical rotation behaviour was demonstrated for a mixture constituted of the laterally fluorinated propiolate ester component and a nematic with a large positive dielectric anisotropy. These field-induced results could be fitted to expressions from the existing theory of pretransitional optical activity. Circular dichroism studies at low temperatures were performed for two compounds in dilute solution and were found to exhibit very large changes in their extinction coefficient at wavelengths in the ultraviolet region, which may indicate strong chiral interactions even in dilute isotropic solutions of these materials.  相似文献

Experimental studies of dielectric relaxation in the nematic and isotropic phases of 6CB (4-hexyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl) and two mixtures of 6CB perturbed by 160 Å hydrophobic silica aerosil are presented. The measurements have been made from 1 MHz to 1 GHz in the temperature range from 19 to 40°C. For bulk 6CB, the dynamic aspect in the isotropic phase as well as the principal dielectric permittivities ε ∥ * (ω) and ε ┴ * (ω) in the nematic phase have been fully explored. For the mixtures, measurements on the isotropic phase and also on homeotropically aligned samples in the nematic phase have been made, and these results are systematically compared with those for the bulk. The possible molecular reorientational movements corresponding to the different absorption domains in the dielectric spectrum are discussed and compared with the previously proposed interpretations.  相似文献

The phase characterization of two homologous series of liquid crystalline methacrylic monomers based on χ -hexyl- and χ -butyloxysalicylaldimine groups, with different alkoxy tails, is presented. The liquid crystalline materials were characterized by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, differential thermal analysis, and X-ray diffraction. All the monomers exhibit the simultaneous occurrence of smectic A and C phases. When the alkyl chain is short, a narrow nematic phase is observed, leading to an I-N-SmA-SmC phase sequence.  相似文献

We prepared some achiral flexible liquid crystal oligomers possessing an octafluorobiphenyl unit and investigated their phase transition properties using polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All the compounds showed nematic phases. The trimer with even-numbered spacers was found to exhibit coexistence of the nematic regions and the chiral nematic regions with opposite twist senses of a sample contained in a homogeneous aligned cell during a cooling process, whilst that with odd-numbered spacers did not. We discuss how the even-numbered trimer produces the helical state.  相似文献

The experimental equilibrium phase diagram of mixtures of linear poly(n-butyl acrylate) of molecular mass Mw = 112000 g mol-1 and the low molecular mass LC mixture E7 has been established using polarized optical microscopy and light scattering techniques. The diagram is found to be reminiscent of an upper critical solution temperature system. Two independent series of samples with the same composition were studied, yielding consistent results. A region of nematic and isotropic coexisting phases and a region of a single isotropic phase were identified in the composition-temperature phase diagram. The results were analysed within a theoretical model combining the Flory-Huggins lattice theory for isotropic mixing and the Maier-Saupe theory for nematic ordering. Interestingly, no region of isotropic coexisting phases was observed in our experiments. This is probably due to the fact that the nematic interaction overwhelms the isotropic interaction in the region where (I + I) coexisting phases could appear. A preferential solubility of certain constituents of the LC mixture in the polymer could possibly be a reason for this behaviour.  相似文献
