The influence of an asymmetric periodic grooved cell surface on the 2D static director configuration of a nematic liquid crystal has been investigated. The minimum in the Frank-Oseen free energy was solved numerically with the Rapini-Papoular form of the surface anchoring energy at the nematic-grating interface. Results are presented for the variation of pretilt angle in the tilted bulk director field as a function of the surface groove depth, pitch and asymmetry and the bulk parameters. The simulations demonstrate the existence of two energetically degenerate high and low pretilted bulk alignment configurations. The pretilt values in these two regimes and also for the low tilt regime with finite surface anchoring are consistent with experimental results. An effective increase in the resolution of the model is obtained by using an irregular grid to describe the surface profile.  相似文献

Novel C2-symmetric chiral dopant derivatives, namely, N-substituted (2R, 3R)-2,3-bis(4-(4-octyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy)succinimides1a-h, were synthesised, and the effects of the N-substituent and imide-carbonyl groups on the helical twisting powers (HTPs) were investigated in two nematic liquid crystalline compounds, 4-n-pentyl-4?-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4-n-butylaniline (EBBA). As a result, it was clarified that the bulkiness of the N-substituents has a significant correlation with the HTPs, and the imide-carbonyl group interacts strongly with the cyano group of 5CB to give high HTPs in the nematic phases. However, it is assumed that the imide-carbonyl groups of the dopants do not have strong electrostatic attractive interactions with EBBA molecules in the nematic phase to afford the moderate HTPs.  相似文献

Four series of liquid crystalline (LC) compounds containing benzyl perfluoroalkyl thioether groups (BFT), 4-n-alkoxyphenylbenzyl perfluoroalkyl thioethers (nO-BBFT-FmF), 4-n-alkoxyphenylbenzyl perfluoroisoalkyl thioethers (nO-BBFT-FmIF), 4-n-propylcyclohexylbenzyl perfluoroalkyl thioethers (3-C1BFT-FmF) and 4-ethylcyclohexyl-3'-fluorobenzyl perfluoroalkyl thioethers (2-C1FBFT-FmF), were synthesized and their mesomorphic phase transitions and electro-optical properties investigated. nO-BBFT-FmF and nO-BBFT-FmIF have SmA, SmB and CrE phases, while 3-C1BFT-FmF and 2-C1FBFT-FmF showed a SmB phase. It was found that the appearance of a LC phase and the thermal stability were closely connected with the chemical structures of the rigid core part and the terminal groups. The electrooptical properties were investigated for BFT using ZLI-1132 as nematic solvent. Some of the BFT compounds have a good solubility of 15 wt % in ZLI-1132 and can be used as a component for lowering the refractive anisotropy (Delta n) of the host ZLI-1132 solvent.  相似文献

New chiral derivatives of thiophene fused with menthane, camphor or the 3R-3-methylcyclohexane ring were prepared and studied as chiral dopants in cholesteric liquid crystalline mixtures. The helical twisting power of the most effective compounds of this series, menthothiophenes, was strong enough to obtain selective reflection of visible light at 16 wt% concentration of the dopant in a non-chiral nematic host.  相似文献

In this study, we investigated the enlargement of liquid crystal (LC) blue-phase (BP) temperature range using the rod-like low-molecular-weight cyano phenyl-type chiral nematic LC with various core group and chiral dopant concentrations. Also, the electro-optic response time was investigated for them. We found that the BP temperature range was strongly dependent upon the core structure and the chiral dopant concentration for the chiral nematic LC mixtures having the same terminal group. Also, we found a stable BP with a wide temperature range (more than 6 K), including a BP-isotropic coexistence state over 13.5 K upon heating and cooling processes and very fast response time (less than 1 ms), by using the cyano phenyl-type chiral nematic LC mixture with a high molecular aspect ratio and a high chiral dopant concentration.  相似文献

Magnetic field-induced spatially periodic deformations of planar nematic layers twisted by an angle Φ were investigated numerically. Chiral nematics with pitches compatible with the twist angle and non-chiral nematics twisted by Φ ? π/2 were considered. Two different modes of deformation, taking the form of stripes, were found: the so called Mode X, with periodicity parallel to the mid-plane director in the undisturbed structure, and Mode Y with periodicity perpendicular to the mid-plane director. The static director distributions were calculated for various magnetic field strengths, twist angles and elastic parameters. The influence of surface tilt was also investigated. Mode X appeared for sufficiently large Φ and was possible in nematics with typical elastic properties. Mode Y appeared provided that the k 22/k 11 elastic constant ratio and the twist angle Φ were sufficiently small. Both modes arose from the undistorted state when the magnetic field exceeded a threshold value. The spatial period of the patterns increased with field strength. At high field, regions with almost homogeneous deformation arose in the two halves of each stripe. Their width and, simultaneously, the spatial period diverged to infinity at some critical field. This divergence corresponds to the transition to a homogeneously deformed state. Diagrams were constructed showing the ranges of parameters favouring the periodic distortions.  相似文献

A magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle/chiral nematic liquid crystal (N*-LC) composite was prepared and filled into a planar treated cell. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles had been modified by oleic acid so that they could be better dispersed in the composite. When a magnetic field was scanned on the outer surface of the cell locally, Fe3O4 nanoparticles moved towards the inner surface of the cell correspondingly, and the black expected information was displayed. When the magnet was applied to the opposite outer surface, the information was erased. After polymer network walls were prepared in the composite, the resolution of the information displayed increased. Then, through the formation of hydrogen bonds between the nanoparticles and chiral pyridine compound (CPC) doped in the composite, the pitch length of the N*-LC could be adjusted by altering the intensity of the applied magnetic field. The composite doped with CPC could potentially be used as a material for a type of reflective colour paper with magnetically controllable characteristics.  相似文献

Galactose derivatives were explored as chiral dopants, effective for inducing chiral nematic liquid crystal (LC) phases. Galactose bearing O-isopropylidene substituents at the C3 and C4 and butoxybiphenyl substituents at the C2 and C6 positions exhibits a high helical twisting power (HTP) value of ?74.4 μm?1. Such a high HTP value for the galactose derivative is attributed to (1) linkage of the C3 and C4 carbons with the O-isopropylidene substituent, which places the C2 and C6 substitutes in a skew arrangement at a large angle and (2) enhancement of the affinity with the host nematic LCs by incorporating aromatic substituents at the C2 and C6 positions that are similar to those in the host.  相似文献

We measured the flexoelectric ratio e* of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) doped with a calamitic ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC). We doped two kinds of commercial FLC into the pure NLC at a weight concentration of 5 wt%. The absolute value of the flexoelectric ratio was increased up to 49% compared to the pure NLC. The greater transverse dipole moment and the elastic constant of FLC are thought to be related to the increase of the flexoelectric ratio.  相似文献

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core 1,2-propanediol (PD) have been synthesised, termed as ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA, ABA-PD-TFBA, PBA-PD-TFBA and AA-PD-TFBA, respectively, in which one of the two mesogenic groups, the fluorinated mesogenic unit, was kept fix and the other arm was different. The intermediate compounds and LC dimers were characterised by FTIR, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results of the measurements indicated that ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA and ABA-PD-TFBA displayed optical activity and enantiotropic chiral nematic phase, and PBA-PD-TFBA was an enantiotropic nematic LC while AA-PD-TFBA was a monotropic LC, displaying both nematic phase and smectic A phase on cooling. The results indicated that PD was able to induce the chiral nematic phase, nevertheless, the rigidity of the mesogenic arm, the flexibility of the terminal group and even the type of the terminal chemical bond played an important effect on the thermal properties of the dimers, and even on the formation of the chiral nematic phase. It is also worth noting that C=C at the terminal helped to stabilise the LC phase.  相似文献

A series of acrylate monomers with alkoxy tails of varying lengths are synthesised and polymerised. The butoxy analogue had a stable enantiotropic cholesteric liquid crystalline phase which formed a grandjean texture when prepared as a thin film between glass slides. The polymer was mixed with a low molar mass nematic liquid crystal in various proportions and the pitch of the chiral nematic phases were determined using a cano‐wedge cell technique. The polymer prepared from (S)‐2‐(4‐butoxyphenyl‐4′‐benzoyloxy)‐1‐methyl ethyl acrylate had a pitch length of 113 nm which indicates that the polymer film could be employed in optical devices requiring selective reflection of light with short wavelengths in the region of 170 nm. An unsticking technique was applied for the fabrication of a polymer-stabilised cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cell. The template of polymer matrix in the planarly aligned cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch-LC) was perfectly preserved by lifting off the hydrophilic antisticking substrate. The desired PSCLC cell could then be obtained by injecting a third Ch-LC sample between two designed templates of PSCLC layer. By adjusting the pitch distribution in the two stacking templates, a reflectivity of nearly 50% incident light could be yielded and the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum could be controlled accurately in the PSCLC cell. Thus, a method to modulate the wide-band reflection of 50% visible light flux range was offered.  相似文献

A new synthetic approach for the chiral terphenyl- and quaterphenyl-based diesters, bis[(1S)-1-methylheptyl] 1,1′:4′,1″-terphenyl-4,4″-dicarboxylates and bis[(1S)-1-methylheptyl] 1,1′:4′,1″:4″,1″′-quaterphenyl-4,4″′-dicarboxylates, has been developed and optimised. The approach presented allows the synthesis of a range of laterally substituted oligophenyl diesters in good yield. A number of pairs of S,S and R,R isomers have been synthesised and their thermodynamic properties measured. Most of the compounds have very good solubility in a variety of liquid crystalline host mixtures, and moderate helical twisting power, which has been determined for a number of nematic materials, either dielectrically positive or negative. The high birefringence of the oligophenyl core makes them suitable candidates as chiral dopants for medium to highly birefringent nematic materials for generating cholesteric and blue phase materials.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a method to accelerate the crystallisation of nematic liquid crystal mixtures based on crystallisation theory. This method is to hold a nematic liquid crystal sample at a temperature suitable for crystal growth after aging it at a temperature suitable for nucleation. After we specified these temperatures of a nematic liquid crystal mixture using differential scanning calorimetry, we demonstrate that the two-temperature aging method is effective for the crystallisation of other nematic liquid crystal mixtures in which the crystal-liquid crystal transition temperature has so far been undetectable.  相似文献

The zinc bilinone (ZnBL) dimers 4 and 5 bearing chiral aliphatic spacers ((2S,4S)-2,4-pentanedioxy and (3S,5S)-2,6-dimethyl-3,5-heptanedioxy for 4 and 5, respectively) were newly prepared, and their conformational distribution was investigated. The 1H NMR and circular dichroism spectra revealed that the present dimers predominantly adopted the homohelicity conformation (MM and PP for 4 and 5, respectively), although the reference monomers with the corresponding subunit structures exhibited poor helicity enrichment. The helical twisting powers of these ZnBL dimers for a nematic liquid crystal (N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline, MBBA) were also investigated. With the dimers doped into MBBA, highly efficient chiral nematic induction was achieved. Especially, the dimer 5 exhibited the βM value of +1800 μm−1.  相似文献

We investigated the surface modification induced by the ion-beam (IB) irradiation of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) film and its liquid crystal (LC) alignment characteristics. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed the chemical modification; as the IB incidence angle increased, the number of surface C–O bonds decreased, inducing an anisotropic dipole moment on the PEG film surface. In addition, the physical modification was demonstrated via atomic force microscopy analysis using three-dimensional images as a function of the IB incidence angle. The surface roughness was analyzed; the modification with the smoothest surface was observed for an IB incidence angle of 45°. This modification affected the LC alignment state of the PEG film, as demonstrated by the polarized optical microscopy analysis with pre-tilt angle measurements. Furthermore, for the same IB incidence angle, the residual DC measured using the capacitance–voltage curves was extremely low. Hence, a PEG film irradiated with an IB incidence angle of 45° could be a suitable LC alignment layer.  相似文献

In recent years a variety of techniques has appeared for the fabrication and manipulation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). This development now offers new tools for the study and control at the molecular level of the interaction of liquid crystals (LCs) with solid surfaces, a research area of great importance for liquid crystal applications. In this paper we show that mechanically rubbed octadecylsiloxane SAMs generate a novel surface alignment of LCs in which the in-plane surface anisotropy usually accompanying rubbing is operative, but only for smectics in which the mean molecular long axis, [ncirc], is tilted from the layer normal. On our SAMs smectic phases align with the layers parallel to the SAM surface, and in tilted smectics the surface component of [ncirc] is along the rubbing direction. This anisotropy is absent in the nematic phases which align with [ncirc] strictly normal to the surface. This behaviour can be understood in terms of a rubbed SAM monolayer surface, which is low energy, molecularly smooth, and rendered anisotropic by the rubbing. UV irradiation of rubbed SAMs gave excellent planar alignment ([ncirc] parallel to the surface). This type of control over LC alignment has not been previously reported.  相似文献
