A graph G=(V,E) is an integral sum graph (ISG) if there exists a labeling S(G)⊂Z such that V=S(G) and for every pair of distinct vertices u,vV, uv is an edge if and only if u+vV. A vertex in a graph is called a fork if its degree is not 2. In 1998, Chen proved that every tree whose forks are at distance at least 4 from each other is an ISG. In 2004, He et al. reduced the distance to 3. In this paper we reduce the distance further to 2, i.e. we prove that every tree whose forks are at least distance 2 apart is an ISG.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a simple undirected graph with a set V of vertices and a set E of edges. Each vertex vV has an integer valued demand d(v)?0. The source location problem with vertex-connectivity requirements in a given graph G asks to find a set S of vertices with the minimum cardinality such that there are at least d(v) vertex-disjoint paths between S and each vertex vV-S. In this paper, we show that the problem with d(v)?3, vV can be solved in linear time. Moreover, we show that in the case where d(v)?4 for some vertex vV, the problem is NP-hard.  相似文献

Under what conditions is it true that if there is a graph homomorphism GHGT, then there is a graph homomorphism HT? Let G be a connected graph of odd girth 2k + 1. We say that G is (2k + 1)‐angulated if every two vertices of G are joined by a path each of whose edges lies on some (2k + 1)‐cycle. We call G strongly (2k + 1)‐angulated if every two vertices are connected by a sequence of (2k + 1)‐cycles with consecutive cycles sharing at least one edge. We prove that if G is strongly (2k + 1)‐angulated, H is any graph, S, T are graphs with odd girth at least 2k + 1, and ?: GHST is a graph homomorphism, then either ? maps G□{h} to S□{th} for all hV(H) where thV(T) depends on h; or ? maps G□{h} to {sh}□ T for all hV(H) where shV(S) depends on h. This theorem allows us to prove several sufficient conditions for a cancelation law of a graph homomorphism between two box products with a common factor. We conclude the article with some open questions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 58:221‐238, 2008  相似文献

A proper vertex coloring of a graph G=(V,E) is acyclic if G contains no bicolored cycle. A graph G is acyclically L-list colorable if for a given list assignment L={L(v):vV}, there exists a proper acyclic coloring ? of G such that ?(v)∈L(v) for all vV(G). If G is acyclically L-list colorable for any list assignment with |L(v)|≥k for all vV, then G is acyclically k-choosable. In this paper it is proved that every planar graph with neither 4-cycles nor chordal 6-cycles is acyclically 5-choosable. This generalizes the results of [M. Montassier, A. Raspaud, W. Wang, Acyclic 5-choosability of planar graphs without small cycles, J. Graph Theory 54 (2007) 245-260], and a corollary of [M. Montassier, P. Ochem, A. Raspaud, On the acyclic choosability of graphs, J. Graph Theory 51 (4) (2006) 281-300].  相似文献

For a poset P=(X,≤), the upper bound graph (UB-graph) of P is the graph U=(X,EU), where uvEU if and only if uv and there exists mX such that u,vm. For a graph G, the distance two graph DS2(G) is the graph with vertex set V(DS2(G))=V(G) and u,vV(DS2(G)) are adjacent if and only if dG(u,v)=2. In this paper, we deal with distance two graphs of upper bound graphs. We obtain a characterization of distance two graphs of split upper bound graphs.  相似文献

An (h,s,t)-representation of a graph G consists of a collection of subtrees of a tree T, where each subtree corresponds to a vertex in G, such that (i) the maximum degree of T is at most h, (ii) every subtree has maximum degree at most s, (iii) there is an edge between two vertices in the graph G if and only if the corresponding subtrees have at least t vertices in common in T. The class of graphs that have an (h,s,t)-representation is denoted by [h,s,t]. It is well known that the class of chordal graphs corresponds to the class [3, 3, 1]. Moreover, it was proved by Jamison and Mulder that chordal graphs correspond to orthodox-[3, 3, 1] graphs defined below. In this paper, we investigate the class of [h,2,t] graphs, i.e., the intersection graphs of paths in a tree. The [h,2,1] graphs are also known as path graphs [F. Gavril, A recognition algorithm for the intersection graphs of paths in trees, Discrete Math. 23 (1978) 211-227] or VPT graphs [M.C. Golumbic, R.E. Jamison, Edge and vertex intersection of paths in a tree, Discrete Math. 55 (1985) 151-159], and [h,2,2] graphs are known as the EPT graphs. We consider variations of [h,2,t] by three main parameters: h, t and whether the graph has an orthodox representation. We give the complete hierarchy of relationships between the classes of weakly chordal, chordal, [h,2,t] and orthodox-[h,2,t] graphs for varied values of h and t.  相似文献

Given a graph G=(V,E), two fixed vertices s,tV and a set F of pairs of vertices (called forbidden pairs), the problem of a path avoiding forbidden pairs is to find a path from s to t that contains at most one vertex from each pair in F. The problem is known to be NP-complete in general and a few restricted versions of the problem are known to be in P. We study the complexity of the problem for directed acyclic graphs with respect to the structure of the forbidden pairs. We write x?y if and only if there exists a path from x to y and we assume, without loss of generality, that for every forbidden pair (x,y)∈F we have x?y. The forbidden pairs have a halving structure if no two pairs (u,v),(x,y)∈F satisfy v?x or v=x and they have a hierarchical structure if no two pairs (u,v),(x,y)∈F satisfy u?x?v?y. We show that the PAFP problem is NP-hard even if the forbidden pairs have the halving structure and we provide a surprisingly simple and efficient algorithm for the PAFP problem with the hierarchical structure.  相似文献

Motivated by applications in software programming, we consider the problem of covering a graph by a feasible labeling. Given an undirected graph G=(V,E), two positive integers k and t, and an alphabet Σ, a feasible labeling is defined as an assignment of a set LvΣ to each vertex vV, such that (i) |Lv|≤k for all vV and (ii) each label αΣ is used no more than t times. An edge e={i,j} is said to be covered by a feasible labeling if LiLj≠0?. G is said to be covered if there exists a feasible labeling that covers each edge eE.In general, we show that the problem of deciding whether or not a tree can be covered is strongly NP-complete. For k=2, t=3, we characterize the trees that can be covered and provide a linear time algorithm for solving the decision problem. For fixed t, we present a strongly polynomial algorithm that solves the decision problem; if a tree can be covered, then a corresponding feasible labeling can be obtained in time polynomial in k and the size of the tree. For general graphs, we give a strongly polynomial algorithm to resolve the covering problem for k=2, t=3.  相似文献

A list-assignment L to the vertices of G is an assignment of a set L(v) of colors to vertex v for every vV(G). An (L,d)-coloring is a mapping ? that assigns a color ?(v)∈L(v) to each vertex vV(G) such that at most d neighbors of v receive color ?(v). A graph is called (k,d)-choosable, if G admits an (L,d)-coloring for every list assignment L with |L(v)|≥k for all vV(G). In this note, it is proved that every plane graph, which contains no 4-cycles and l-cycles for some l∈{8,9}, is (3,1)-choosable.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a simple graph. A subset SV is a dominating set of G, if for any vertex uV-S, there exists a vertex vS such that uvE. The domination number of G, γ(G), equals the minimum cardinality of a dominating set. A Roman dominating function on graph G=(V,E) is a function f:V→{0,1,2} satisfying the condition that every vertex v for which f(v)=0 is adjacent to at least one vertex u for which f(u)=2. The weight of a Roman dominating function is the value f(V)=∑vVf(v). The Roman domination number of a graph G, denoted by γR(G), equals the minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on G. In this paper, for any integer k(2?k?γ(G)), we give a characterization of graphs for which γR(G)=γ(G)+k, which settles an open problem in [E.J. Cockayne, P.M. Dreyer Jr, S.M. Hedetniemi et al. On Roman domination in graphs, Discrete Math. 278 (2004) 11-22].  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the network improvement problem for multicut by upgrading nodes in a directed tree T = (VE) with multiple sources and multiple terminals. In a node based upgrading model, a node v can be upgraded at the expense of c(v) and such an upgrade reduces weights on all edges incident to v. The objective is to upgrade a minimum cost subset S ⊆ V of nodes such that the resulting network has a multicut in which no edge has weight larger than a given value D. We first obtain a minimum cardinality node multicut Vc for tree T, then find the minimum cost upgrading set based on the upgrading sets for the subtrees rooted at the nodes in Vc. We show that our algorithm is polynomial when the number of source–terminal pairs is upper bounded by a given value.  相似文献

Let G be a graph. If u,vV(G), a u-vshortest path of G is a path linking u and v with minimum number of edges. The closed interval I[u,v] consists of all vertices lying in some u-v shortest path of G. For SV(G), the set I[S] is the union of all sets I[u,v] for u,vS. We say that S is a convex set if I[S]=S. The convex hull of S, denoted Ih[S], is the smallest convex set containing S. A set S is a hull set of G if Ih[S]=V(G). The cardinality of a minimum hull set of G is the hull number of G, denoted by hn(G). In this work we prove that deciding whether hn(G)≤k is NP-complete.We also present polynomial-time algorithms for computing hn(G) when G is a unit interval graph, a cograph or a split graph.  相似文献

Given positive integers n and p, and a complex finite dimensional vector space V, we let Sn,p(V) denote the set of all functions from V×V×?×V-(n+p copies) to C that are linear and symmetric in the first n positions, and conjugate linear symmetric in the last p positions. Letting κ=min{n,p} we introduce twisted inner products, [·,·]s,t,1?s,t?κ, on Sn,p(V), and prove the monotonicity condition [F,F]s,t?[F,F]u,v is satisfied when s?u?κ,t?v?κ, and FSn,p(V). Using the monotonicity condition, and the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, we obtain as corollaries many known inequalities involving norms of symmetric multilinear functions, which in turn imply known inequalities involving permanents of positive semidefinite Hermitian matrices. New tensor and permanental inequalities are also presented. Applications to partial differential equations are indicated.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a finite non-empty graph, where V and E are the sets of vertices and edges of G, respectively, and |V|=n and |E|=e. A vertex-magic total labeling (VMTL) is a bijection λ from VE to the consecutive integers 1,2,…,n+e with the property that for every vV, , for some constant h. Such a labeling is super if λ(V)={1,2,…,n}. In this paper, two new methods to obtain super VMTLs of graphs are put forward. The first, from a graph G with some characteristics, provides a super VMTL to the graph kG graph composed by the disjoint unions of k copies of G, for a large number of values of k. The second, from a graph G0 which admits a super VMTL; for instance, the graph kG, provides many super VMTLs for the graphs obtained from G0 by means of the addition to it of various sets of edges.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a finite, simple and undirected graph. For SV, let δ(S,G)={(u,v)∈E:uS and vVS} be the edge boundary of S. Given an integer i, 1≤i≤|V|, let the edge isoperimetric value of G at i be defined as be(i,G)=minSV;|S|=i|δ(S,G)|. The edge isoperimetric peak of G is defined as be(G)=max1≤j≤|V|be(j,G). Let bv(G) denote the vertex isoperimetric peak defined in a corresponding way. The problem of determining a lower bound for the vertex isoperimetric peak in complete t-ary trees was recently considered in [Y. Otachi, K. Yamazaki, A lower bound for the vertex boundary-width of complete k-ary trees, Discrete Mathematics, in press (doi:10.1016/j.disc.2007.05.014)]. In this paper we provide bounds which improve those in the above cited paper. Our results can be generalized to arbitrary (rooted) trees. The depth d of a tree is the number of nodes on the longest path starting from the root and ending at a leaf. In this paper we show that for a complete binary tree of depth d (denoted as ), and where c1, c2 are constants. For a complete t-ary tree of depth d (denoted as ) and dclogt where c is a constant, we show that and where c1, c2 are constants. At the heart of our proof we have the following theorem which works for an arbitrary rooted tree and not just for a complete t-ary tree. Let T=(V,E,r) be a finite, connected and rooted tree — the root being the vertex r. Define a weight function w:VN where the weight w(u) of a vertex u is the number of its successors (including itself) and let the weight index η(T) be defined as the number of distinct weights in the tree, i.e η(T)=|{w(u):uV}|. For a positive integer k, let ?(k)=|{iN:1≤i≤|V|,be(i,G)≤k}|. We show that .  相似文献

Let G be a graph and SV(G). For each vertex uS and for each vV(G)−S, we define to be the length of a shortest path in 〈V(G)−(S−{u})〉 if such a path exists, and otherwise. Let vV(G). We define if v⁄∈S, and wS(v)=2 if vS. If, for each vV(G), we have wS(v)≥1, then S is an exponential dominating set. The smallest cardinality of an exponential dominating set is the exponential domination number, γe(G). In this paper, we prove: (i) that if G is a connected graph of diameter d, then γe(G)≥(d+2)/4, and, (ii) that if G is a connected graph of order n, then .  相似文献

A domination graph of a digraph D, dom(D), is created using the vertex set of D and edge {u,v}∈E[dom(D)] whenever (u,z)∈A(D) or (v,z)∈A(D) for every other vertex zV(D). The underlying graph of a digraph D, UG(D), is the graph for which D is a biorientation. We completely characterize digraphs whose underlying graphs are identical to their domination graphs, UG(D)=dom(D). The maximum and minimum number of single arcs in these digraphs, and their characteristics, is given.  相似文献

The eccentric distance sum (EDS) is a novel topological index that offers a vast potential for structure activity/property relationships. For a connected graph G, the eccentric distance sum is defined as ξd(G)=vV(G)ecG(v)DG(v), where ecG(v) is the eccentricity of a vertex v in G and DG(v) is the sum of distances of all vertices in G from v. More recently, Yu et al. [G. Yu, L. Feng, A. Ili?, On the eccentric distance sum of trees and unicyclic graphs, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 375 (2011) 99-107] proved that for an n-vertex tree T, ξd(T)?4n2−9n+5, with equality holding if and only if T is the n-vertex star Sn, and for an n-vertex unicyclic graph G, ξd(G)?4n2−9n+1, with equality holding if and only if G is the graph obtained by adding an edge between two pendent vertices of n-vertex star. In this note, we give a short and unified proof of the above two results.  相似文献

An ordered pair (U,R) is called a signpost system if U is a finite nonempty set, RU×U×U, and the following axioms hold for all u,v,wU: (1) if (u,v,w)∈R, then (v,u,u)∈R; (2) if (u,v,w)∈R, then (v,u,w)∉R; (3) if uv, then there exists tU such that (u,t,v)∈R. (If F is a (finite) connected graph with vertex set U and distance function d, then U together with the set of all ordered triples (u,v,w) of vertices in F such that d(u,v)=1 and d(v,w)=d(u,w)−1 is an example of a signpost system). If (U,R) is a signpost system and G is a graph, then G is called the underlying graph of (U,R) if V(G)=U and xyE(G) if and only if (x,y,y)∈R (for all x,yU). It is possible to say that a signpost system shows a way how to travel in its underlying graph. The following result is proved: Let (U,R) be a signpost system and let G denote the underlying graph of (U,R). Then G is connected and every induced path in G is a geodesic in G if and only if (U,R) satisfies axioms (4)-(8) stated in this paper; note that axioms (4)-(8)-similarly as axioms (1)-(3)-can be formulated in the language of the first-order logic.  相似文献
