The accurate interaction energies of the CH/pi interaction in the benzene-X clusters (X = ethylene and acetylene) were experimentally and theoretically determined. Two-color multiphoton ionization spectroscopy was applied, and the binding energies in the neutral ground state of the clusters were evaluated from the dissociation threshold measurements of the cluster cations. The experimental binding energies of the clusters (D0) were 1.4+/-0.2 and 2.7+/-0.2 kcal/mol, respectively. Estimated CCSD(T) interaction energies for the clusters at the basis set limit (De) were 2.2 and 2.8 kcal/mol, respectively. Calculated D0 values (1.7 and 2.4 kcal/mol, respectively) are close to the experimental values. Large electron correlation contributions (Ecorr=-3.6 and -2.8 kcal/mol, respectively) show that dispersion is the major source of the attraction in both clusters. The electrostatic interaction in the ethylene cluster is very small (-0.38 kcal/mol), as in the case of the benzene-methane cluster, whereas the electrostatic interaction in the acetylene cluster is large (-1.70 kcal/mol). The shifts of the S1-S0 transition also suggest that the ethylene cluster is a van der Waals-type cluster, but the acetylene cluster is a pi-hydrogen-bonded cluster. The nature of the CH/pi interaction of the "activated" alkyne C-H bond is significantly different from that of the "nonactivated" (or typical) alkane and alkene C-H bonds.  相似文献

The (TiO2)n clusters and their anions for n = 1-4 have been studied with coupled cluster theory [CCSD(T)] and density functional theory (DFT). For n > 1, numerous conformations are located for both the neutral and anionic clusters, and their relative energies are calculated at both the DFT and CCSD(T) levels. The CCSD(T) energies are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit for the monomer and dimer and calculated up to the triple-zeta level for the trimer and tetramer. The adiabatic and vertical electron detachment energies of the anionic clusters to the ground and first excited states of the neutral clusters are calculated at both levels and compared with the experimental results. The comparison allows for the definitive assignment of the ground-state structures of the anionic clusters. Anions of the dimer and tetramer are found to have very closely lying conformations within 2 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T) level, whereas that of the trimer does not. In addition, accurate clustering energies and heats of formation are calculated for the neutral clusters and compared with the available experimental data. Estimates of the titanium-oxygen bond energies show that they are stronger than the group VIB transition metal-oxygen bonds except for tungsten. The atomization energies of these clusters display much stronger basis set dependence than the clustering energies. This allows the calculation of more accurate heats of formation for larger clusters on the basis of calculated clustering energies.  相似文献

Theoretical study on the small clusters of LiH, NaH, BeH(2), and MgH(2)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
High-level ab initio molecular orbital theory is used to calculate the geometries, vibrational frequencies, atomic charges, and binding energies of the small clusters (LiH)(n), (NaH)(n), (BeH(2))(n), and (MgH(2))(n) (n = 1-4). For (LiH)(n) and (NaH)(n), there are planar cyclic structures when n = 2, 3. We have found the cubic structure T(d) in addition to the planar cyclic D(4)(h) when n = 4. The D(4)(h) is less stable than the T(d) geometry. For (BeH(2))(n) and (MgH(2))(n), when n = 3, there are three kinds of structures: chain C(2)(v), planar cyclic D(3)(h), and hat-like C(2)(v). The C(2)(v) geometry is more stable than the others. When n = 4, there are four kinds of structures: chain D(2)(h), cubic T(d), string-like C(2), and cubic transformation C(1). The most stable compounds in the families of (LiH)(n), (NaH)(n), (BeH(2))(n), and (MgH(2))(n) are cubic T(d), cubic T(d), chain D(2)(h), and string-like C(2) geometries, respectively, when n = 4. Calculated binding energies range from -24 to -37 kcal/mol for (LiH)(n) and --19 to -30 kcal/mol for (NaH)(n), (BeH(2))(n), and (MgH(2))(n). The hydrogen atoms in hydride clusters always have negative charges. The atomic charges of planar cyclic structures are weaker than those of cubic structures, and there is a tendency of reducing along with the increase of the cluster size. The vibrational frequencies of planar cyclic structures have consistent tendency, too. It indicates that the bond distance increases with the ionic character of the bond.  相似文献

New particle formation in the atmosphere is initiated by nucleation of gas-phase species. The small molecular clusters that act as seeds for new particles are stabilized by the incorporation of an ion. Ion-induced nucleation of molecular cluster ions containing sulfuric acid generates new particles in the background troposphere. The addition of a proton-accepting species to sulfuric acid cluster ions can further stabilize them and may promote nucleation under a wider range of conditions. To understand and accurately predict atmospheric nucleation, the stabilities of each molecular cluster within a chemical family must be known. We present the first comprehensive measurements of the ammonia-sulfuric acid positive ion cluster system NH(4)(+)(NH(3))(n)(H(2)SO(4))(s). Enthalpies and entropies of individual growth steps within this system were measured using either an ion flow reactor-mass spectrometer system under equilibrium conditions or by thermal decomposition of clusters in an ion trap mass spectrometer. Low level ab initio structural calculations provided inputs to a master equation model to determine bond energies from thermal decomposition measurements. Optimized ab initio structures for clusters up through n = 3, s = 3 are reported. Upon addition of ammonia and sulfuric acid pairs, internal proton transfer generates multiple NH(4)(+) and HSO(4)(-) ions within the clusters. These multiple-ion structures are up to 50 kcal mol(-1) more stable than corresponding isomers that retain neutral NH(3) and H(2)SO(4) species. The lowest energy n = s clusters are composed entirely of ions. The addition of acid-base pairs to the core NH(4)(+) ion generates nanocrystals that begin to resemble the ammonium bisulfate bulk crystal starting with the smallest n = s cluster, NH(4)(+)(NH(3))(1)(H(2)SO(4))(1). In the absence of water, this cluster ion system nucleates spontaneously for conditions that encompass most of the free troposphere.  相似文献

The stable structures, energies, and electronic properties of neutral, cationic, and anionic clusters of Al(n) (n = 2-10) are studied systematically at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d) level. We find that our optimized structures of Al5(+), Al9(+), Al9(-), Al10, Al10(+), and Al10(-) clusters are more stable than the corresponding ones proposed in previous literature reports. For the studied neutral aluminum clusters, our results show that the stability has an odd/even alternation phenomenon. We also find that the Al3, Al7, Al7(+), and Al7(-) structures are more stable than their neighbors according to their binding energies. For Al7(+) with a special stability, the nucleus-independent chemical shifts and resonance energies are calculated to evaluate its aromaticity. In addition, we present results on hardness, ionization potential, and electron detachment energy. On the basis of the stable structures of the neutral Al(n) (n = 2-10) clusters, the Al(n)O (n = 2-10) clusters are further investigated at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d), and the lowest-energy structures are searched. The structures show that oxygen tends to either be absorbed at the surface of the aluminum clusters or be inserted between Al atoms to form an Al(n-1)OAl motif, of which the Al(n-1) part retains the stable structure of pure aluminum clusters.  相似文献

Ab initio and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out for zinc-water clusters Zn(n)-(H2O)(m) (n = 1-32 and m = 1-3, where n and m are the numbers of zinc atoms and water molecules, respectively) to elucidate the structure and electronic states of the clusters and the interaction of zinc cluster with water molecules. The binding energies of H2O to zinc clusters were small at n = 2-3 (2.3-4.2 kcal mol(-1)), whereas the energy increased significantly in n = 4 (9.0 kcal mol(-1)). Also, the binding nature of H2O was changed at n = 4. The cluster size dependency of the binding energy of H2O accorded well with that of the natural population of electrons in the 4p orbital of the zinc atom. In the larger clusters (n > 20), it was found that the zinc atoms in surface regions of the zinc cluster have a positive charge, whereas those in the interior region have a negative charge with the large electron population in the 4p orbital. The interaction of H2O with the zinc clusters were discussed on the basis of the theoretical results.  相似文献

Large coupled cluster computations utilizing the Dunning weighted correlation-consistent polarized core-valence (cc-pwCVXZ) hierarchy of basis sets have been conducted, resulting in a panoply of internally consistent geometries and atomization energies for small Li(n) and Li(n)H (n=1-4) clusters. In contrast to previous ab initio results, we predict a monotonic increase in atomization energies per atom with increasing cluster size for lithium clusters, in accordance with the historical Knudsen-effusion measurements of Wu. For hydrogenated lithium clusters, our results support previous theoretical work concerning the relatively low atomization energy per atom for Li(2)H compared to LiH and Li(3)H. The CCSD(T)/cc-pwCVQZ atomization energies for LiH, Li(2)H, Li(3)H, and the most stable isomer of Li(4)H, including zero-point energy corrections, are 55.7, 79.6, 113.0, and 130.6 kcal/mol, respectively. The latter results are not consistent with the most recent experiments of Wu.  相似文献

Ab initio and density functional methods have been used to examine the structures and energetics of the hydrated clusters of methane sulfonic acid (MSA), CH3SO3H.(H2O)n (n = 1-5). For small clusters with one or two water molecules, the most stable clusters have strong cyclic hydrogen bonds between the proton of OH group in MSA and the water molecules. With three or more water molecules, the proton transfer from MSA to water becomes possible, forming ion-pair structures between CH3SO3- and H3O+ moieties. For MSA.(H2O)3, the energy difference between the most stable ion pair and neutral structures are less than 1 kJ/mol, thus coexistence of neutral and ion-pair isomers are expected. For larger clusters with four and five water molecules, the ion-pair isomers are more stable (>10 kJ/mol) than the neutral ones; thus, proton transfer takes place. The ion-pair clusters can have direct hydrogen bond between CH3SO3- and H3O+ or indirect one through water molecule. For MSA.(H2O)5, the energy difference between ion pairs with direct and indirect hydrogen bonds are less than 1 kJ/mol; namely, the charge separation and acid ionization is energetically possible. The calculated IR spectra of stable isomers of MSA.(H2O)n clusters clearly demonstrate the significant red shift of OH stretching of MSA and hydrogen-bonded OH stretching of water molecules as the size of cluster increases.  相似文献

The bond dissociation energies (BDEs), fluoride and fluorocation affinities, and electron affinities of SeF(n) (n = 1-6), SeOF(n) (n = 0-4), and SeO(2)F(n) (n = 0-2) have been predicted with coupled cluster CCSD(T) theory extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. To achieve near chemical accuracy, additional corrections were added to the complete basis set binding energies based on frozen core coupled cluster theory energies. These included corrections for core-valence effects, scalar relativistic effects, for first-order atomic spin-orbit effects, and vibrational zero point energies. The adiabatic BDEs contain contributions from product reorganization energies and, therefore, can be much smaller than the diabatic BDEs and can vary over a wide range. For thermochemical calculations, the adiabatic values must be used, whereas for bond strength and kinetic considerations, the diabatic values should be used when only small displacements of the atoms without change of the geometry of the molecule are involved. The adiabatic Se-F BDEs of SeF(n) (n = 1-6) are SeF(6) = 90, SeF(5) = 27, SeF(4) = 93, SeF(3) = 61, SeF(2) = 86, and SeF = 76 kcal/mol, and the corresponding diabatic values are SeF(6) = 90, SeF(5) = 88, SeF(4) = 93, SeF(3) = 74, SeF(2) = 86, and SeF = 76 kcal/mol. The adiabatic Se-O BDEs of SeO(n) (n = 1-3), SeOF(n) (n = 1-4), and SeO(2)F(n) (n = 1,2) range from 23 to 107 kcal/mol, whereas the diabatic ones range from 62 to 154 kcal/mol. The adiabatic Se-F BDEs of SeOF(n) (n = 1-4) and SeO(2)F(n) (n = 1,2) range from 20 to 88 kcal/mol, whereas the diabatic ones range from 73 to 112 kcal/mol. The fluoride affinities of SeF(n), (n = 1-6), SeO(n), (n = 1-3), SeOF(n), (n = 1-4), and SeO(2)F(n) (n = 1,2) range from 15 to 121 kcal/mol, demonstrating that the Lewis acidity of these species covers the spectrum from very weak (SeF(6)) to very strong (SeO(3)) acids. The electron affinities which are a measure of the oxidizing power of a species, span a wide range from 1.56 eV in SeF(4) to 5.16 eV in SeF(5) and for the free radicals are much higher than for the neutral molecules. Another interesting feature of these molecules and ions stems from the fact that many of them possess both a Se free valence electron pair and a free unpaired valence electron, raising the questions of their preferred location and their influence on the Se-F and Se═O bond strengths.  相似文献

The lowest-energy structures and electronic properties of the BLi(n) (n = 1-7) clusters are reported using the B3LYP, MP2, and CCSD(T) methods with the aug-cc-pVDZ basis set. Though the results at the B3LYP level agree well with those at the CCSD(T) level, the MP2 method is rather unsatisfactory. The first three-dimensional ground state in the BLi(n) clusters occurs for BLi(4), and the impurity B atom is seen to be trapped in a Li cage from the BLi(6) cluster onwards. The evolution of the binding energies, vertical ionization potentials, and polarizability with size of cluster shows the BLi(5) cluster to be most stable among the BLi(n) clusters. Besides, the BLi(5) cluster is also found to have the largest reaction enthalpy (49.8 kcal/mol) upon losing a Li atom, which is different from the previous prediction. The unique stability of the 8-valence electron BLi(5) can be understood from the cluster electronic shell model (CSM). However, in contradiction to the prediction of the CSM, the 2s level is filled prior to the 1d level in the BLi(n) clusters.  相似文献

The authors present theoretical results describing the adsorption of H2 and H2S molecules on small neutral and cationic gold clusters (Au(n)((0/+1)), n=1-8) using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation. Lowest energy structures of the gold clusters along with their isomers are considered in the optimization process for molecular adsorption. The adsorption energies of H2S molecule on the cationic clusters are generally greater than those on the corresponding neutral clusters. These are also greater than the H2 adsorption energies on the corresponding cationic and neutral clusters. The adsorption energies for cationic clusters decrease with increasing cluster size. This fact is reflected in the elongations of the Au-S and Au-H bonds indicating weak adsorption as the cluster grows. In most cases, the geometry of the lowest energy gold cluster remains planar even after the adsorption. In addition, the adsorbed molecule gets adjusted such that its center of mass lies on the plane of the gold cluster. Study of the orbital charge density of the gold adsorbed H2S molecule reveals that conduction is possible through molecular orbitals other than the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. The dissociation of the cationic Au(n)SH2+ cluster into Au(n)S+ and H2 is preferred over the dissociation into Au(m)SH2+ and Au(n-m), where n=2-8 and m=1-(n-1). H2S adsorbed clusters with odd number of gold atoms are more stable than neighboring even n clusters.  相似文献

Electronic and structural properties of a series of tri-tungsten oxide clusters, W3On- and W3On (n=7-10), are investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both W 5d and O 2p detachment features are observed for n=7-9, whereas only detachment features from O 2p-type orbitals are observed for W3O10- at high electron binding energies (>7 eV). A large energy gap (approximately 3.4 eV) is observed for the stoichiometric W3O9 cluster, which already reaches the bulk value, suggesting that W3O9 can be viewed as the smallest molecular model for bulk WO3. DFT calculations are carried out to locate the most stable structures for both the anion and neutral clusters; time-dependent DFT method is used to predict the vertical detachment energies and to compare with the experimental data. It is shown that W3O9 possesses a D3h structure, in which each W atom is tetrahedrally coordinated with two bridging O atoms and two terminal O atoms. W3O8 and W3O7 can be viewed as removing one and two terminal O atoms from W3O9, respectively, whereas W3O1) can be viewed as replacing a terminal O in W3O9 by a peroxo O2 unit. We show that W3O8 contains a localized W4+ site, which can readily react with O2 to form the W3O10 clusters with a calculated O2 adsorption energy of -78 kcal/mol. It is suggested that the W3O8 cluster can be viewed as a molecular model for O-deficient site in tungsten oxides.  相似文献

We derive a consistent approach for predicting the solvation free energies of charged solutes in the presence of implicit and explicit solvents. We find that some published methodologies make systematic errors in the computed free energies because of the incorrect accounting of the standard state corrections for water molecules or water clusters present in the thermodynamic cycle. This problem can be avoided by using the same standard state for each species involved in the reaction under consideration. We analyze two different thermodynamic cycles for calculating the solvation free energies of ionic solutes: (1) the cluster cycle with an n water cluster as a reagent and (2) the monomer cycle with n distinct water molecules as reagents. The use of the cluster cycle gives solvation free energies that are in excellent agreement with the experimental values obtained from studies of ion-water clusters. The mean absolute errors are 0.8 kcal/mol for H(+) and 2.0 kcal/mol for Cu(2+). Conversely, calculations using the monomer cycle lead to mean absolute errors that are >10 kcal/mol for H(+) and >30 kcal/mol for Cu(2+). The presence of hydrogen-bonded clusters of similar size on the left- and right-hand sides of the reaction cycle results in the cancellation of the systematic errors in the calculated free energies. Using the cluster cycle with 1 solvation shell leads to errors of 5 kcal/mol for H(+) (6 waters) and 27 kcal/mol for Cu(2+) (6 waters), whereas using 2 solvation shells leads to accuracies of 2 kcal/mol for Cu(2+) (18 waters) and 1 kcal/mol for H(+) (10 waters).  相似文献

Density functional theory was used at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory to study the hydrates of 2NH3:H2SO4:nH2O for n = 0~4. Neutrals of the most stable clusters, when n = 0 and 1, spontaneously formed and were determined to be hydrogen-bonded molecular complexes of monomeric species. Double ions (clusters containing a NH4+ cation and a HSO4- anion) or even ternary ions (clusters with two NH4+ cations and one SO42- anion) spontaneously formed in the most stable clusters of 2NH3:H2SO4:nH2O (n = 2, 3, 4). The energetics of binding and incremental association was also calculated. Double ions are not energetically favorable until 2NH3:H2SO4:2H2O because of the about equal free energies for forming the neutral (the most stable) and double ion (the second stable) isomers. The free energy of incremental association from free H2O and 2NH3:H2SO4:nH2O has a maximum at n = 2 at room temperature with ΔG ≈ -2 kcal/mol. The comparison of incremental association energies between 2NH3:H2SO4:nH2O, NH3:H2SO4:nH2O and H2SO4:nH2O clusters revealed that NH3 plays an important role in the atmospheric particle nucleation.  相似文献

Possible structures of the carbon-nitrogen clusters of the form C(m)N(n) (m = 1-4, n = 1-4, m + n = 2-5) were predicted for the neutral, anion, and cation species in the singlet, doublet, and triplet states, whenever appropriate. The calculations were performed at the G3, MP2(fc)/6-311+G*, and B3LYP/6-311+G* levels of theory. Several molecular properties related to the experimental data--such as the electronic energy, equilibrium geometry, binding energy, HOMO-LUMO gap (HLG), and spin contamination --were calculated. In addition the vertical electron attachment, the adiabatic electron affinity, and vertical ionization energy, of the neutral clusters were calculated. Most of the predicted lowest energy structures were linear, whereas bent structures became more stable with the increase of the cluster size and increase of the number of the N atoms. In most of the predicted lowest energy structures, the N atom prefers the terminal position with acetylenic bond. The calculated BE of the predicted clusters increases with the increase of the cluster size for the neutral and cation clusters but decreases with the increase of the cluster size for the anion clusters. The predicted clusters are characterized by high HLG of about 11 eV on the average, with that of the anion clusters is smaller than that for the neutral and cation clusters. It is concluded then that the anion clusters are less stable than the corresponding neutral and cation clusters. Finally, the N(2) loss reaction is treated.  相似文献

We performed global minimum searches for the B(n) H(n+2) (n=2-5) series and found that classical structures composed of 2c-2e B-H and B-B bonds become progressively less stable along the series. Relative energies increase from 2.9?kcal?mol(-1) in B(2) H(4) to 62.3?kcal?mol(-1) in B(5) H(7). We believe this occurs because boron atoms in the studied molecules are trying to avoid sp(2) hybridization and trigonal structure at the boron atoms, as in that case one 2p-AO is empty, which is highly unfavorable. This affinity of boron to have some electron density on all 2p-AOs and avoiding having one 2p-AO empty is a main reason why classical structures are not the most stable configurations and why multicenter bonding is so important for the studied boron-hydride clusters as well as for pure boron clusters and boron compounds in general.  相似文献

We perform a systematic investigation on small silicon-doped boron clusters B(n)Si (n=1-7) in both neutral and anionic states using density functional (DFT) and coupled-cluster (CCSD(T)) theories. The global minima of these B(n)Si(0/-) clusters are characterized together with their growth mechanisms. The planar structures are dominant for small B(n)Si clusters with n≤5. The B(6)Si molecule represents a geometrical transition with a quasi-planar geometry, and the first 3D global minimum is found for the B(7)Si cluster. The small neutral B(n)Si clusters can be formed by substituting the single boron atom of B(n+1) by silicon. The Si atom prefers the external position of the skeleton and tends to form bonds with its two neighboring B atoms. The larger B(7)Si cluster is constructed by doping Si-atoms on the symmetry axis of the B(n) host, which leads to the bonding of the silicon to the ring boron atoms through a number of hyper-coordination. Calculations of the thermochemical properties of B(n)Si(0/-) clusters, such as binding energies (BE), heats of formation at 0 K (ΔH(f)(0)) and 298 K (ΔH(f)([298])), adiabatic (ADE) and vertical (VDE) detachment energies, and dissociation energies (D(e)), are performed using the high accuracy G4 and complete basis-set extrapolation (CCSD(T)/CBS) approaches. The differences of heats of formation (at 0 K) between the G4 and CBS approaches for the B(n)Si clusters vary in the range of 0.0-4.6 kcal mol(-1). The largest difference between two approaches for ADE values is 0.15 eV. Our theoretical predictions also indicate that the species B(2)Si, B(4)Si, B(3)Si(-) and B(7)Si(-) are systems with enhanced stability, exhibiting each a double (σ and π) aromaticity. B(5)Si(-) and B(6)Si are doubly antiaromatic (σ and π) with lower stability.  相似文献

Density functional theoretic studies are performed for the high-spin copper clusters (n)(+1)Cu(n) (n = 2-14), which are devoid of electron pairs shared between atoms, hence no-pair clusters (J. Phys. Chem. 1988, 92, 1352; Isr. J. Chem. 1993, 33, 455; J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1999, 121, 3165). Despite the lack of electron pairing, it is found that the bond dissociation energy per atom (BDE/n) is significant and converges (to within 1 kcal mol(-1)), around a cluster size (11)Cu(10), to a value of BDE/n = 19 kcal mol(-1). This is a very large bonding energy, much larger than has previously been obtained for no-pair clusters of lithium, BDE/n = 12 kcal mol(-1), or sodium clusters, BDE/n = 3 kcal mol(-1). This bonding, so-called ferromagnetic bonding (FM-bonding) is analyzed using a valence bond (VB) model (J. Phys. Chem. A 2002, 106, 4961; Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2003, 5, 158). As such, FM-bonding in no-pair clusters is described as an ionic fluctuation, of the triplet pair, that spreads over all the close neighbors of a given atom in the clusters. Thus, if we refer to each triplet pair and its ionic fluctuations as a local FM-bond, we can regard the electronic structure of a given (n)(+1)M(n) cluster as a resonance hybrid of all the local FM-bonds between close neighbors. The model shows how a weak interaction in the diatomic triplet molecule can become a remarkably strong binding force that binds together mono-valent atoms without even a single electron pair. This is achieved because the growing number of VB structures exerts a cumulative effect of stabilization that is maximized when the cluster has a compact structure with an optimal coordination number for the atoms.  相似文献

Thermochemical parameters of carbonic acid and the stationary points on the neutral hydration pathways of carbon dioxide, CO 2 + nH 2O --> H 2CO 3 + ( n - 1)H 2O, with n = 1, 2, 3, and 4, were calculated using geometries optimized at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. Coupled-cluster theory (CCSD(T)) energies were extrapolated to the complete basis set limit in most cases and then used to evaluate heats of formation. A high energy barrier of approximately 50 kcal/mol was predicted for the addition of one water molecule to CO 2 ( n = 1). This barrier is lowered in cyclic H-bonded systems of CO 2 with water dimer and water trimer in which preassociation complexes are formed with binding energies of approximately 7 and 15 kcal/mol, respectively. For n = 2, a trimeric six-member cyclic transition state has an energy barrier of approximately 33 (gas phase) and a free energy barrier of approximately 31 (in a continuum solvent model of water at 298 K) kcal/mol, relative to the precomplex. For n = 3, two reactive pathways are possible with the first having all three water molecules involved in hydrogen transfer via an eight-member cycle, and in the second, the third water molecule is not directly involved in the hydrogen transfer but solvates the n = 2 transition state. In the gas phase, the two transition states have comparable energies of approximately 15 kcal/mol relative to separated reactants. The first path is favored over in aqueous solution by approximately 5 kcal/mol in free energy due to the formation of a structure resembling a (HCO 3 (-)/H 3OH 2O (+)) ion pair. Bulk solvation reduces the free energy barrier of the first path by approximately 10 kcal/mol for a free energy barrier of approximately 22 kcal/mol for the (CO 2 + 3H 2O) aq reaction. For n = 4, the transition state, in which a three-water chain takes part in the hydrogen transfer while the fourth water microsolvates the cluster, is energetically more favored than transition states incorporating two or four active water molecules. An energy barrier of approximately 20 (gas phase) and a free energy barrier of approximately 19 (in water) kcal/mol were derived for the CO 2 + 4H 2O reaction, and again formation of an ion pair is important. The calculated results confirm the crucial role of direct participation of three water molecules ( n = 3) in the eight-member cyclic TS for the CO 2 hydration reaction. Carbonic acid and its water complexes are consistently higher in energy (by approximately 6-7 kcal/mol) than the corresponding CO 2 complexes and can undergo more facile water-assisted dehydration processes.  相似文献
