We report a comparison of charge transport and recombination dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employing nanocrystalline TiO(2) and SnO(2) films and address the impact of these dynamics upon photovoltaic device efficiency. Transient photovoltage studies of electron transport in the metal oxide film are correlated with transient absorption studies of electron recombination with both oxidized sensitizer dyes and the redox couple. For all three processes, the dynamics are observed to be 2-3 orders of magnitude faster for the SnO(2) electrode. The origins of these faster dynamics are addressed by studies correlating the electron recombination dynamics to dye cations with chronoamperometric studies of film electron density. These studies indicate that the faster recombination dynamics for the SnO(2) electrodes result both from a 100-fold higher electron diffusion constant at matched electron densities, consistent with a lower trap density for this metal oxide relative to TiO(2), and from a 300 mV positive shift of the SnO(2) conduction band/trap states density of states relative to TiO(2). The faster recombination to the redox couple results in an increased dark current for DSSCs employing SnO(2) films, limiting the device open-circuit voltage. The faster recombination dynamics to the dye cation result in a significant reduction in the efficiency of regeneration of the dye ground state by the redox couple, as confirmed by transient absorption studies of this reaction, and in a loss of device short-circuit current and fill factor. The importance of this loss pathway was confirmed by nonideal diode equation analyses of device current-voltage data. The addition of MgO blocking layers is shown to be effective at reducing recombination losses to the redox electrolyte but is found to be unable to retard recombination dynamics to the dye cation sufficiently to allow efficient dye regeneration without resulting in concomitant losses of electron injection efficiency. We conclude that such a large acceleration of electron dynamics within the metal oxide films of DSSCs may in general be detrimental to device efficiency due to the limited rate of dye regeneration by the redox couple and discuss the implications of this conclusion for strategies to optimize device performance. 相似文献

Optimizing the ratio of the rates for charge separation (CS) over charge recombination (CR) is crucial to create long-lived charge-separated states. Mastering the factors that govern the electron transfer (ET) rates is essential when trying to achieve molecular-scale electronics, artificial photosynthesis, and also for the further development of solar cells. Much work has been put into the question of how the donor-acceptor distances and donor-bridge energy gaps affect the electronic coupling, V(DA), and thus the rates of ET. We present here a unique comparison on how these factors differently influence the rates for CS and CR in a porphyrin-based donor-bridge-acceptor model system. Our system contains three series, each of which focuses on a separate charge-transfer rate-determining factor, the donor-acceptor distance, the donor-bridge energy gap, and last, the influence of the electron acceptor on the rate for charge transfer. In these three series both CS and CR are governed by superexchange interactions which make a CR/CS comparative study ideal. We show here that the exponential distance dependence increases slightly for CR compared to that for CS as a result of the increased tunneling barrier height for this reaction, in accordance with the McConnell superexchange model. We also show that the dependence on the tunneling barrier height is different for CS and CR. This difference is highly dependent on the electron acceptor and thus cannot solely be explained by the differences in the frontier orbitals of the electron donor in these porphyrin systems.

Zinc-modified nanocrystalline SnO2 electrodes are prepared by chemical treatment of the commercial SnO2 colloid with zinc acetate and their thickness effects on photovoltaic characteristics are investigated. Open-circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor increase with increasing zinc concentration, while short-circuit photocurrent (Jsc) decreases. The normalized incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) shows that increase of zinc concentration utilizes long wavelength light. Concerning the conversion efficiency, optimal concentration within the present experiment is found to be 10 mol.% Zn2+ with respect to Sn4+. As increasing thickness of the films based on 10 mol.% zinc-modified SnO2 ranging from 0.76 to 8.12 μm, Jsc increases, reaches maximum and then decreases without change in Voc. The highest conversion efficiency of about 3.4% is achieved under 1 sun of AM 1.5 irradiation for the ∼6.3 μm-thick 10 mol.% zinc-modified SnO2 film with Jsc of 9.09 mA/cm2, Voc 600 mV and fill factor 62%. 相似文献

The optimization of interfacial charge transfer is crucial to the design of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this paper we address the dynamics of the charge separation and recombination in liquid-electrolyte and solid-state cells employing a series of amphiphilic ruthenium dyes with varying hydrocarbon chain lengths, acting as an insulating barrier for electron-hole recombination. Dynamics of electron injection, monitored by time-resolved emission spectroscopy, and of charge recombination and regeneration, monitored by transient optical absorption spectroscopy, are correlated with device performance. We find that increasing dye alkyl chain length results in slower charge recombination dynamics to both the dye cation and the redox electrolyte or solid-state hole conductor (spiro-OMeTAD). These slower recombination dynamics are however paralleled by reduced rates for both electron injection into the TiO2 electrode and dye regeneration by the I-/I3- redox couple or spiro-OMeTAD. Kinetic competition between electron recombination with dye cations and dye ground state regeneration by the iodide electrolyte is found to be a key factor for liquid electrolyte cells, with optimum device performance being obtained when the dye regeneration is just fast enough to compete with electron-hole recombination. These results are discussed in terms of the minimization of kinetic redundancy in solid-state and liquid-electrolyte dye-sensitized photovoltaic devices. 相似文献

Replacing the nonyl groups on the solar cell dye Ru(4,4'-carboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)(4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine)(NCS)(2) (Z-907) with amino groups results in a marked decrease in solar cell performance. This is despite the fact that the amino derivative (Z-960) has more favourable light absorption characteristics than Z-907 when used with thick nanocrystalline TiO(2) layers. Electron transfer to the electrolyte from the exposed fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate is particularly fast in cells employing the Z-960 dye if a compact TiO(2) blocking layer is not used. The kinetics of electron transfer from the nanocrystalline TiO(2) layer in DSCs employing Z-960 are comparable to those of bare TiO(2) and ca. 2 to 5 times faster than for cells employing Z-907. The faster charge recombination in cells employing Z-960 lowers open-circuit photovoltage and results in very significant charge collection losses that lower short-circuit photocurrent. Voltammetric measurements show that surface modification of FTO electrodes with Z-960 results in slightly more facile charge transfer to acceptor species in triiodide/iodide electrolytes in the dark. A simpler molecule, p-aminobenzoic acid, more dramatically catalyses this charge transfer reaction. Conversely, chemical modification of FTO electrodes with Z-907 or p-toluic acid retards charge transfer kinetics. Similar results are obtained for nanocrystalline TiO(2) electrodes modified with these benzoic acid derivatives. These results strongly imply that surface adsorbed molecules bearing amino groups, including dye molecules, can catalyse charge recombination in dye-sensitized solar cells. 相似文献

We report a quantitative comparison of the photoaction spectra, short circuit current densities, and power conversion efficiencies of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) that contain bilayers of nanocrystalline TiO2 (nc-TiO2) and titania inverse opal photonic crystals (PCs). Cells were fabricated with PC/nc-TiO2 and nc-TiO2/PC bilayer films on glass/tin oxide anode of the cell, as well as in a split configuration in which the nc-TiO2 and PC layers were deposited on the anode and cathode sides of the cell, respectively. Incident photon current efficiencies at single wavelengths and current-voltage curves in white light were obtained with both cathode and anode side illumination. The results obtained support a model proposed by Miguez and co-workers, in which coupling of the low refractive index PC layer to the higher index nc-TiO2 layer creates a standing wave in the nc-TiO2 layer, enhancing the response of the DSSC in the red region of the spectrum. This enhancement is very sensitive to the degree of physical contact between the two layers. A gap on the order of 200 nm thick, created by a polymer templating technique, is sufficient to decouple the two layers optically. The coupling of the nc-TiO2 and PC layers across the gap could be improved slightly by treatment with TiCl4 vapor. In the bilayer configuration, there is an enhancement in the IPCE across the visible spectrum, which is primarily caused by defect scattering in the PC layer. There is also an increase of 20-50 mV in the open circuit photovoltage of the cell. With anode side illumination, the addition of a PC layer to the nc-TiO2 layer increased the efficiency of DSSCs from 6.5 to 8.3% at a constant N719 dye loading of 155-160 nmol/cm2. 相似文献

Electron transport in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline solar cells appears to be a slow diffusion-controlled process. Values of the apparent electron diffusion coefficient are many orders of magnitude smaller than those reported for bulk anatase. The slow transport of electrons has been attributed to multiple trapping (MT) at energy levels distributed exponentially in the band gap of the nanocrystalline oxide. In the MT model, release of immobile electrons from occupied traps to the conduction band is a thermally activated process, and it might therefore be expected that the apparent electron diffusion coefficient should depend strongly on temperature. In fact, rather small activation energies (0.1-0.25 eV) have been derived from time and frequency resolved measurements of the short circuit photocurrent. It is shown that the MT model can give rise to such anomalously low apparent activation energies as a consequence of the boundary conditions imposed by the short circuit condition and the quasi-static relationship between changes in the densities of free and trapped electrons. This conclusion has been confirmed by exact numerical solutions of the time-dependent generation/collection problem for periodic excitation that provide a good fit to experimental data. 相似文献

Grain morphology and trapping effects on electron transport in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline solar cells 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have examined the combined effects of grain morphology and electron trapping on the transient response of photoelectrons moving through the TiO2 grains in a dye-sensitized nanocrystalline solar cell using a multi-time-scale random walk Monte Carlo model. Our use of a multi-time-scale approach enables us to simulate transport for electrons moving through spherical connected grains in a three-dimensional (3D) voided network and look at the effect of the size of interparticle boundaries on carrier dynamics. We can also address similar times to those over which measurements are taken, namely, 0.1 ms. These times are long because of deep traps in the TiO2 grains. The grains have 2-fold connectivity in one dimension (linear chains) or 4-fold or 6-fold connectivity in three dimensions and traps with an exponential distribution of energies. Photoelectrons are generated by a light pulse of short duration. The spatial distribution of the photogenerated electron density from this pulse either has a uniform profile or is peaked on the electrolyte side. We show that the constrictions at the grain necks slow the electrons, making trapping more likely and hence further delaying their passage to the extracting electrode. By comparing our results for 4-fold and 6-fold coordinated particles on a cubic lattice with 2-fold coordinated particles on linear chains, we show that transport is slowed in the former case due to the additional paths available to the electrons in the 3D network. We also find that the charge and current transients cannot be fit to an analytical solution of the continuum equations with an effective diffusion coefficient even at long times. Therefore, caution must be exercised when attempting to fit experimental transient data with an effective diffusion coefficient. 相似文献

Electron transport and recombination in dye-sensitized nanocrystalline solar cells (DSCs) are strongly influenced by the presence of trapping states in the titanium dioxide particles, and collection of photoinjected electrons at the contact can require times ranging from milliseconds to seconds, depending on the illumination intensity. A direct method of determining the density and energetic distribution of the trapping states responsible for slowing electron transport has been developed. It involves extraction of trapped electrons by switching the cell from an open circuit to a short circuit after a period of illumination. An advantage of this charge extraction method is that it is less sensitive than other methods to shunting of the DSC by electron transfer at the conducting glass substrate. Results derived from charge extraction measurements on DSCs (with and without compact TiO(2) blocking layers) are compared with those obtained by analysis of the open circuit photovoltage decay. 相似文献

Nanocrystalline solar cells promise significant advantages with respect to cost-efficient mass production, since they do not
require imprinted chemical potential gradients for charge separation (e.g., electrical fields generated by p, n doping, which
should last for one to three decades). They, however, require kinetic charge separation and chemical electronic mechanisms,
which rectify photocurrents for energy conversion. Such mechanisms are presently not well understood, since the existing nanosolar
cells (dye and polymer solar cells) have evolved largely empirically. It is shown in this paper that function and properties
of kinetically determined solar cells can be derived from irreversible thermodynamic principles considering minimum entropy
production (or the principle of least action) and involve solid-state electrochemical processes. Based on this model, presently
studied nanosolar cells and also the primary photosynthetic mechanism are analyzed to identify the most significant physical–chemical
factors involved.

Dye-sensitized solar cells based on nanocrystalline TiO(2) have been fabricated with an amphiphilic ruthenium sensitizer [Ru (4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine) (4,4'-bis(p-hexyloxystyryl)-2,2'-bipyridine)(NCS)(2)], coded as K-19, and 4-guanidinobutyric acid (GBA) as coadsorbent. The cells showed a approximately 50 mV increase in open-circuit voltage and a similar current in comparison with cells without GBA cografting. The performance of both types of devices was evaluated on the basis of their photocurrent-voltage characteristics, dark current measurements, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and phototransient decay methods. The results indicate that GBA shifted the conduction band of TiO(2) toward a more negative potential and reduced the interfacial charge-transfer reaction from conduction band electrons to triiodide in the electrolyte (also known as the back reaction). In addition, the devices with GBA cografting showed an excellent stability with a power conversion efficiency of approximately 8% under simulated full sunlight (air mass 1.5, 100 mW cm(-2)) during visible light soaking at 60 degrees C. 相似文献

In this study, the influence of the TiCl(4) post-treatment on nanocrystalline TiO(2) films as electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells is investigated and compared to nontreated films. As a result of this post-treatment cell efficiencies are improved, due to higher photocurrents. On a microscopic scale TiO(2) particle growth on the order of 1 nm is observed. Despite a corresponding decrease of BET surface area, more dye is adsorbed onto the oxide surface. Although it seems trivial to match this finding with the improved photocurrent, this performance improvement cannot be attributed to higher dye adsorption only. This follows from comparison between incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and light absorption characteristics. Since the charge transport properties of the TiO(2) films are already more than sufficient without treatment, the increase in short circuit current density J(SC) cannot be related to improvements in charge transport either. Transient photocurrent measurements indicate a shift in the conduction band edge of the TiO(2) upon TiCl(4) treatment. It is concluded that the main contribution to enhanced current originates from this shift in conduction band edge, resulting in improved charge injection into the TiO(2). 相似文献

A new water-based solution of ion-conductive polymeric gel electrolyte composed of polyethylene glycol and polyvinylpyrrolidone as gel-forming substances, I?/I3 ? as reversible redox couple, and various ratios of acetonitrile/water solvents was prepared and used in the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells. The effects of water on the electrochemical behavior of the prepared electrolyte solutions were examined by the cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was employed to quantify the charge-transfer resistance and the electron lifetime at the TiO2 conduction band. The characteristic peak shifted to a lower frequency in the Bode phase plot, which is an indication of a longer electron lifetime for the cell containing more water content. Photovoltaic performance of the cells prepared by the new water-based gel electrolyte was studied. Changes in the current density–voltage (J–V) characteristics can be explained based on the effect of water on the energetics and kinetics of charge transport and charge recombination in the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It was observed that the increase in open-circuit voltage (V oc) and fill factor and decrease in J SC were noticeable for cells containing water-based gel electrolyte. It was indicated that the charge recombination between injected electrons and electron acceptors (polyiodide) in the redox electrolyte was remarkably inhibited by the increase of water. The photovoltaic performance stability of the DSSC containing gel electrolyte solution including 50 wt% of water was examined, and it was shown that it is more stable than conventional cells considerably for 168 h. Energy conversion efficiency of 2.30 % was achieved, under illumination with a simulated solar light of 100 mW cm?2. 相似文献
