We consider the Complex Stone-Weierstrass Property (CSWP), which is the complex version of the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem. If X is a compact subspace of a product of three linearly ordered spaces, then X has the CSWP if and only if X has no subspace homeomorphic to the Cantor set. In addition, every finite power of the double arrow space has the CSWP. These results are proved using some results about those compact Hausdorff spaces which have scattered-to-one maps onto compact metric spaces.  相似文献

It is well known that if (X,q) is an asymmetric normed linear space, then the function qs defined on X by qs(x)=max{q(x),q(−x)}, is a norm on the linear space X. However, the lack of symmetry in the definition of the asymmetric norm q yields an algebraic asymmetry in the dual space of (X,q). This fact establishes a significant difference with the standard results on duality that hold in the case of locally convex spaces. In this paper we study some aspects of a reflexivity theory in the setting of asymmetric normed linear spaces. In particular, we obtain a version of the Goldstine Theorem to these spaces which is applied to prove, among other results, a characterization of reflexive asymmetric normed linear spaces.  相似文献

Let X be a Banach space. We prove that, for a large class of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces E of X-valued sequences, the sets E-?qΓ?q(X), where Γ is any subset of (0,], and E-c0(X) contain closed infinite-dimensional subspaces of E (if non-empty, of course). This result is applied in several particular cases and it is also shown that the same technique can be used to improve a result on the existence of spaces formed by norm-attaining linear operators.  相似文献

We prove that a Hausdorff space X is very I-favorable if and only if X is the almost limit space of a σ-complete inverse system consisting of (not necessarily Hausdorff) second countable spaces and surjective d-open bonding maps. It is also shown that the class of Tychonoff very I-favorable spaces with respect to the co-zero sets coincides with the d-openly generated spaces.  相似文献

Abstract

We prove that if X and Y are Banach spaces such that X* has the weak Radon-Nikodym property (WRNP), Y has the Radon-Nikodym property (RNP) and Y is complemented in its bidual, then the space N(X,Y) of all nuclear operators from X to Y has the WRNP. If moreover X* has the RNP, then N(X,Y) has the RNP.  相似文献

A Schauder Decomposition inXλ when Y has a Schauder Decomposition is presented. This decomposition is then used to investigate the Approximation Property. For instance, it is shown that if X has the Approximation Property and Y has a basis thenXλ has the Approximation Property. We also use this to obtain results concerning operators on vector valued continuous function spaces. Entrata in Redazione il 31 marzo 1999  相似文献

We discuss themes in our joint research with Mel Henriksen. These include the prime ideal structure of C(X), regular ring extensions of C(X), and the construction of various “covers” (generalizations of absolutes) of Tychonoff spaces. We also reflect on Mel Henriksen the man.  相似文献

In a previous paper the author has associated with every inverse system of compact Hausdorff spaces X with limit X and every simplicial complex K (possibly infinite) with geometric realization P=|K| a resolution RK(X) of X×P, which consists of paracompact spaces. If X consists of compact polyhedra, then RK(X) consists of spaces having the homotopy type of polyhedra. In the present paper it is proved that this construction is functorial. One of the consequences is the existence of a functor from the strong shape category of compact Hausdorff spaces X to the shape category of spaces, which maps X to the Cartesian product X×P. Another consequence is the theorem which asserts that, for compact Hausdorff spaces X, X, such that X is strong shape dominated by X and the Cartesian product X×P is a direct product in Sh(Top), then also X×P is a direct product in the shape category Sh(Top).  相似文献

We construct a family (Xγ) of reflexive Banach spaces with long (countable as well as uncountable) transfinite bases but with no unconditional basic sequences. The method we introduce to achieve this allows us to considerably control the structure of subspaces of the resulting spaces as well as to precisely describe the corresponding spaces on non-strictly singular operators. For example, for every pair of countable ordinals γ,β, we are able to decompose every bounded linear operator from Xγ to Xβ as the sum of a diagonal operator and an strictly singular operator. We also show that every finite-dimensional subspace of any member Xγ of our class can be moved by and (4+?)-isomorphism to essentially any region of any other member Xδ or our class. Finally, we find subspaces X of Xγ such that the operator space L(X,Xγ) is quite rich but any bounded operator T from X into X is a strictly singular pertubation of a scalar multiple of the identity.  相似文献

In the present paper it is proved that the functor Oτ of τ-smooth order preserving functionals and the functor OR of Radon order preserving functionals, do not change the weight of infinite Tychonoff spaces. It is shown that the density and the weak density of infinite Tychonoff spaces do not increase under these functors. Moreover, if X is a metric space with the second axiom of countability then the spaces Oτ(X) and OR(X) are also metrizable.  相似文献

We consider multiparameter singular integrals and pseudodifferential operators acting on mixed-norm Bochner spaces Lp1,…,pN(Rn1×?×RnN;X) where X is a UMD Banach space satisfying Pisier's property (α). These geometric conditions are shown to be necessary. We obtain a vector-valued version of a result by R. Fefferman and Stein, also providing a new, inductive proof of the original scalar-valued theorem. Then we extend a result of Bourgain on singular integrals in UMD spaces with an unconditional basis to a multiparameter situation. Finally we carry over a result of Yamazaki on pseudodifferential operators to the Bochner space setting, improving the known vector-valued results even in the one-parameter case.  相似文献

The compact Hausdorff space X has the Complex Stone-Weierstrass Property (CSWP) iff it satisfies the complex version of the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem. W. Rudin showed that all scattered spaces have the CSWP. We describe some techniques for proving that certain non-scattered spaces have the CSWP. In particular, if X is the product of a compact ordered space and a compact scattered space, then X has the CSWP if and only if X does not contain a copy of the Cantor set.  相似文献

We investigate some subtle and interesting phenomena in the duality theory of operator spaces and operator algebras, and give several applications of the surprising fact that certain maps are always weak*-continuous on dual spaces. In particular, if X is a subspace of a C*-algebra A, and if aA satisfies aXX, then we show that the function x?ax on X is automatically weak* continuous if either (a) X is a dual operator space, or (b) a*XX and X is a dual Banach space. These results hinge on a generalization to Banach modules of Tomiyama's famous theorem on contractive projections onto a C*-subalgebra. Applications include a new characterization of the σ-weakly closed (possibly nonunital and nonselfadjoint) operator algebras, and a generalization of the theory of W*-modules to the framework of modules over such algebras. We also give a Banach module characterization of σ-weakly closed spaces of operators which are invariant under the action of a von Neumann algebra.  相似文献

Let (X,τ) be a topological space and let ρ be a metric defined on X. We shall say that (X,τ) is fragmented by ρ if whenever ε>0 and A is a nonempty subset of X there is a τ-open set U such that UA≠∅ and ρ−diam(UA)<ε. In this paper we consider the notion of fragmentability, and its generalisation σ-fragmentability, in the setting of topological groups and metric-valued function spaces. We show that in the presence of Baireness fragmentability of a topological group is very close to metrizability of that group. We also show that for a compact Hausdorff space X, σ-fragmentability of (C(X),‖⋅) implies that the space Cp(X;M) of all continuous functions from X into a metric space M, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence on X, is fragmented by a metric whose topology is at least as strong as the uniform topology on C(X;M). The primary tool used is that of topological games.  相似文献

In this article, we study the preservation properties of(ilov) boundary of multiplicative subgroups in C(X) spaces for non-surjective norm-preserving multiplicative maps.We also show a sufficient condition for surjective maps between groups of positive continuous functions to be a composition operator.  相似文献

Some years ago, a parameter-denoted by A1(X)-was defined in real Banach spaces. In the same setting, several years before, a notion called Q-convexity had been defined. Studying these two notions seems to be rather awkward and up until now this has not been done in deep. Here we indicate some properties and connections between these two parameters and some other related ones, in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. We also consider another notion, a natural extension of Q-convexity, and we discuss the case when A1(X) attains its maximum value. The spaces where this happens can be considered as ”bad” since they cannot have several properties which are usually considered as nice (like uniform non-squareness or P-convexity).  相似文献

Given two Banach function spaces X and Y related to a measure μ, the Y-dual space XY of X is defined as the space of the multipliers from X to Y. The space XY is a generalization of the classical Köthe dual space of X, which is obtained by taking Y = Lt(μ). Under minimal conditions, we can consider the Y-bidual space XYY of X (i.e. the Y-dual of XY). As in the classical case, the containment X ⊂ XYY always holds. We give conditions guaranteeing that X coincides with XYY, in which case X is said to be Y-perfect. We also study when X is isometrically embedded in XYY. Properties involving p-convexity, p-concavity and the order of X and Y, will have a special relevance.  相似文献

There exists a real hereditarily indecomposable Banach space X=X(C) (respectively X=X(H)) such that the algebra L(X)/S(X) is isomorphic to C (respectively to the quaternionic division algebra H).Up to isomorphism, X(C) has exactly two complex structures, which are conjugate, totally incomparable, and both hereditarily indecomposable. So there exist two Banach spaces which are isometric as real spaces but totally incomparable as complex spaces. This extends results of J. Bourgain and S. Szarek [J. Bourgain, Real isomorphic complex Banach spaces need not be complex isomorphic, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 96 (2) (1986) 221-226; S. Szarek, On the existence and uniqueness of complex structure and spaces with “few” operators, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 293 (1) (1986) 339-353; S. Szarek, A superreflexive Banach space which does not admit complex structure, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 97 (3) (1986) 437-444], and proves that a theorem of G. Godefroy and N.J. Kalton [G. Godefroy, N.J. Kalton, Lipschitz-free Banach spaces, Studia Math. 159 (1) (2003) 121-141] about isometric embeddings of separable real Banach spaces does not extend to the complex case. The quaternionic example X(H), on the other hand, has unique complex structure up to isomorphism; other examples with a unique complex structure are produced, including a space with an unconditional basis and non-isomorphic to l2. This answers a question of S. Szarek in [S. Szarek, A superreflexive Banach space which does not admit complex structure, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 97 (3) (1986) 437-444].  相似文献
