The cylindrical column plasma of a neon dc glow discharge under the influence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field is studied. An extended, fully self-consistent model of the column plasma has been used to determine the kinetic quantities of electrons, ions and excited atoms, the radial space charge field, and the axial electric field for given discharge conditions. The model includes a nonlocal kinetic treatment of the electrons by solving their spatially inhomogeneous kinetic equation, taking into account the radial space charge field and the axial magnetic field. The treatment is based on the two-term expansion of the velocity distribution and comprises the determination of its isotropic and anisotropic components in the axial, radial, and azimuthal direction. A transition from a distinctly nonlocal kinetic behavior of the electrons in the magnetic-field-free case to an almost local kinetic behavior has been found by increasing the magnetic field. The establishment of the electron cyclotron motion around the column axis increasingly restricts the radial electron energy transport and reduces the radial ambipolar current. The complex interaction of these transport phenomena with the alterations in the charge carrier production leads finally to a specific variation of the electric field components. The axial field increases by applying weak magnetic fields, however, decreases with increasingly higher magnetic fields. The quasi-adiabatic temperature increase due to compression heating, during high-pressure (HP) processing (HPP), was studied using specially designed equipment. The temperature increase was evaluated as the difference in temperature, during compression, between atmospheric pressure and nominal pressure. The temperature was measured using a thermocouple in the center of a polyoxymethylene cup, which contained the sample. Fresh meat balls, pork meat pate, and tomato purée temperature increases were measured at three initial temperature levels between 40 and 80 °C. Nominal pressure was either 400 or 500 MPa. Results showed that the fat content had a positive effect on temperature increases. Empirical equations were developed to calculate the temperature increase during HPP at different initial temperatures for pressures of 400 and 500 MPa. This thermal effect data can be used for numerical modeling of temperature histories of foods during HP-assisted pasteurization or sterilization processes.  相似文献

Plasma flow in a linearly widening, ideally sectioned, short-circuited magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) channel is studied. MHD flows are classified into two types: continuous flows and flows with a compressional MHD shock in plasmas that are stable and unstable against the onset of ionization instability. Specific features in the evolution of a stationary compression MHD shock are investigated, and its position as a function of the Stewart number is determined. It is found that, in a plasma flow in which ionization instability develops, a compression MHD shock arises at lower values of the MHD interaction parameter than in a stable plasma flow. An unidentified type of instability of MHD discontinuities is revealed.  相似文献

The effect of a longitudinal magnetic field on the linear wake fields excited by a relativistic electron bunch in a cold homogeneous plasma is considered. The obtained results prove that the presence of an external magnetic field leads to a dependence of the wake wavelength on the transverse coordinate, to a change in the wave amplitude with increasing distance from the bunch, and to the emergence of anharmonicity. It is found that a strong magnetic field reduces the wave amplitude significantly for narrow bunches and changes the amplitude insignificantly for broad bunches.  相似文献

We study the field structure and dispersion properties of a hybrid eigenmode guided by a nonuniform magnetized plasma waveguide. It is shown that the rotational and quasi-potential waves contribute to the formation of such a mode in the whistler frequency range. Depending on the plasma density, the rotational component of the hybrid mode is determined by either waves with complex transverse wave numbers or whistler waves, or by true surface waves. In the presence of an axial nonuniformity of the plasma in a channel, the transverse field structure of the propagating mode changes, which is stipulated by changes in both the values of transverse wave numbers and their dependence on the radial coordinate. It is found that the spectrum of axial wave numbers of eigenmodes of a plasma waveguide undergoes a pronounced condensation when smoothing the waveguide walls. The damping of the hybrid mode of a nonuniform waveguide due to electron collisions is found and it is shown that collisional losses determine the damping of waves trapped in the waveguide in the experiments on ionization self-channeling of whistler waves. An analysis of dynamic and nonlocal longitudinal dielectric response properties of a two-dimensional Landau-quantized plasma is carried out, using a thermodynamic Green's function formulation of the RPA with a two-dimensional thermal Green's function for electron propagation in a magnetic field developed in closed form. The longitudinal-electrostatic plasmon dispersion relation is discussed in the low wavenumber regime with nonlocal corrections, and Bernstein mode structure is studied for arbitrary wavenumber. All regimes of magnetic field strength and statistics are investigated. The class of integrals treated here should have broad applicability in other two-dimensional and finite slab plasma studies.The two-dimensional static shielding law in a magnetic field is analyzed for low wavenumber, and for large distances we find V(r) ~ Qk02r3. The inverse screening length k0 = 2πe2?? (? = density, ξ = chemical potential) is evaluated in all regimes of magnetic field strength and all statistical regimes. k0 exhibits violent DHVA oscillatory behavior in the degenerate zero-temperature case at higher field strengths, and the shielding is complete when ξ = r′lz.shtsls;ω, but there is no shielding when ξ ≠ r′lz.shtsls;ωc. A careful analysis confirms that there is no shielding at large distances in the degenerate quantum strong field limit lz.shtsls;ωc > ξ. Since shielding does persist in the nondegenerate quantum strong field limit lz.shtsls;ωc > KT, there should be a pronounced change in physical properties that depend on shielding if the system is driven through a high field statistical transition. (It should be noted that the static shielding law of semiclassical and classical models has no dependence on magnetic field in two dimensions, as in three dimensions.) Finally, we find that the zero field two-dimensional Freidel-Kohn “wiggle” static shielding phenomenon is destroyed by the dispersal of the zero field continuum of electron states into the discrete set of Landau-quantized orbitals due to the imposition of the magnetic field.  相似文献

We study the features of the dispersion curves and field structures of the fundamental axisymmetric mode of nonuniform layered plasma waveguides in a longitudinal magnetic field. It is shown that the presence of sharp boundaries between layers leads to the appearance of additional branches of the dispersion curves in the frequency range ω Be < ω < ωUH(0), where ωBe is the electron gyrofrequency and ωUH(0) is the upper-hybrid resonance frequency for the near-axis region of a nonuniform waveguide. The fields of eigenmodes corresponding to these branches comprise resonance structures near the sharp plasma-density variation at which the upper-hybrid resonance conditions are satisfied and plasma waves are excited. The frequency interval of such a branch is limited by the resonant frequencies of the neighboring uniform layers. It turns out that in the case of a strong magnetic field ({ie392-01}, where ωp is the plasma frequency having the value {ie392-02} in the near-axis region of a nonuniform waveguide), the fundamental-mode field is localized in the near-axis region of a nonuniform waveguide, whereas in the opposite case {ie392-03}, the maximum wave fields are localized in either the upper-hybrid resonance region or the outer (near-boundary) layer of the waveguide if there is no resonance region. It is found that the whistler (helicon) contribution to the field structure of the fundamental axisymmetric mode is very small for narrow nonuniform waveguides (b < λ0, where b is the waveguide radius and λ0 is the wavelength in free space) if the plasma density on the axis is high compared with the cutoff density {ie392-04}. The problem of nonlinear magnetic field diffusion in a substance metallized by shock compression is considered. The problem is solved numerically for various time dependences of the current through the conducting region (direct current, linearly increasing current, and the current increasing as the square root of the time). Nonlinear diffusion leads to qualitative changes in the structure of the current in the substance being metallized. In this case, the maximal current density is shifted from the conducting boundary (at which it is located in the case of linear diffusion) to the bulk of the conducting material. For strong nonlinear diffusion and an increasing boundary magnetic field, the current density peak may approach the shock front. The numerical solution obtained here is compared with the analytic solution obtained earlier for linear diffusion.  相似文献

The explosion of a tungsten wire in a weak longitudinal magnetic field is studied. The longitudinal magnetic field is shown to decrease the rate of rise of initial perturbations and to stabilize the process. This makes it possible to calibrate analytical models of conduction, equations of state, and radiation paths. Good agreement between observed and analytical electrical and optical patterns of the wire explosion and expansion is obtained.  相似文献

Inward transport of a magnetized pure positron plasma confined in a Penning-Malmberg trap is produced by applying a rotating electric field to the plasma. Compression is observed over a broad range of frequencies. Compression factors up to 20 in central density were obtained. Positron collisions with a neutral buffer gas are used to counteract the heating due to the rotating electric field. The results have implications for a variety of applications including the production of brightness enhanced positron beams, the study of electron-positron plasmas, and antihydrogen production.  相似文献

Conditions are found at which adiabatic magnetic compression of plasma confined in a mirror magnetic trap is accompanied by the accumulation of significant energy in a hot anisotropic electron tail with the subsequent release of this energy as a pulse of coherent electromagnetic radiation. We examine the ballistic conductance of a quantum wire in a parallel magnetic field in the presence of several impurities and derive analytic expressions for the transmission coefficient and the conductance in such a system. We show that scattering by impurities leads to a number of sharp peaks near the thresholds of the conductance quantization steps. The number of such peaks is determined by the distance between the impurities and the energy of the scattered particle. We also study the conductivity of a quantum wire in the region where the transport mechanism is diffusive. The conductivity is examined for the case in which charge carriers are scattered by randomly distributed point impurities. We study Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in such a system. Multiwall carbon nanotubes exhibit oscillations of magnetoresistance with the period Φ0=hc/2e [A. Bachtold, C. Strunk, J.-P. Salvetat, et al., Nature 397, 673 (1999)]. This effect is analogous to the Sharvin effect for a normal metal [D. Yu. Sharvin and Yu. V. Sharvin, Pis’ma Zh. Éksp. Teor. Fiz. 34, 285 (1981)]. We measure the expansion of an ultracold plasma across the field lines of a uniform magnetic field. We image the ion distribution by extracting the ions with a high-voltage pulse onto a position-sensitive detector. Early in the lifetime of the plasma (<20 micros), the size of the image is dominated by the time-of-flight Coulomb explosion of the dense ion cloud. For later times, we measure the 2D Gaussian width of the ion image, obtaining the transverse expansion velocity as a function of the magnetic field (up to 70 G). We observe that the expansion velocity scales as B(-1/2), explained by a nonlinear ambipolar diffusion model with anisotropic diffusion in two different directions.  相似文献
