Abstract

The scattering of s-polarized electromagnetic waves by a cloud of small particles above an interface is numerically studied, accounting for multiple scattering. The backscattering effect is first observed without the interface and the influence of the index of the particles is shown. In the case of a dilute system of particles with a low index such that no backscattering peak appears without the interface, it is shown that the introduction of an interface restores the backscattering effect. A physical mechanism responsible for this peak is described. In conclusion, a comparison of this model with scattering by rough surfaces is made.  相似文献

Abstract

Multiple scattering of incoherent polarized light propagating through a random medium comprised of spheroidal Rayleigh particles is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. Two approaches are taken for the implementation of the simulation: the first uses individual realizations of particle orientation and the second, an accelerated method, averages over the particle orientation. These different methods produce results that are indistinguishable within statistical errors. The depolarization of light is examined in both transmission and backscatter for media comprised of spheroids of different polarizability ratios. In media containing spheroidal particles the depolarization is greater than that for spherical particles. Media containing prolate spheroids are more depolarizing than media comprising oblate particles of the same polarizability ratio. The extra depolarization due to asphericity is much less pronounced in the multiple scattering regime than for single scattering.  相似文献

Abstract

Scattering of a plane wave by 2D particles (i.e. rods) placed on a dielectric planar waveguide is studied by means of a volume integral approach. The visualization of the near-field surrounding one or two rods points out the role of the guided waves in the interaction between the particles. In the far-field, a peak in the retroreflection direction, as well as secondary peaks, are observed. Different mechanisms involving multiple scattering of the guided waves are proposed.  相似文献

Present work involves extraction of single-scattering profile from small-angle scattering data, affected by multiple scattering, using an existing model-independent algorithm [Mazumder et al., Physica B 241–243, 1222 (1998), Mazumder et al., J. Appl. Crystallogr. 36, 840 (2003)]. It is shown that implementation of the algorithm becomes effective by representing the multiple scattering profiles in terms of a set of basis function whose form of Hankel transformed pair is known analytically. In the present paper, the methodology has been presented by introducing a Gaussian basis set and has been tested for various simulated profiles. The performance of this methodology has also been tested for scattering profiles having complex internal features and moderate statistical noise. Subsequently, the same has been applied for experimental small-angle neutron scattering data.  相似文献

The numerical calculations of the delay time distributions for the neutron scattering have been carried out. The scattering of the short wave packet of neutrons with the broad energy interval 500–800 keV by 58Ni nuclei has been studied. The decay curves and average times of the compound scattering were found as for the forward scattering as for the specific spin-parity states. The time oscillations of the decay curves were identified as quantum beats that were caused by the interference of the excited resonance set. The statistical analysis of the frequency spectra of the decay curves oscillations has been carried out. The behavior of the examined statistical observables turns out to be close to the Poisson law.  相似文献

Abstract

Wave scattering by inhomogeneous nonlinear particles placed in a nonlinear host medium is studied. In the case of weak scattering the scattering indicatrix is calculated in the first Born approximation. Scattering from small nonlinear particles loaded in a medium with saturation of permittivity is studied by the local perturbation method. A small perturbation method is developed for nonlinear equations of rather general type with a random, intensity-dependent, scattering potential.  相似文献

Abstract

Using a diamond anvil cell, high-pressure 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy has been performed with the nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation. A pressure-induced magnetic hyperfine interaction at 57Fe in SrFeO2, 97 has been detected at 44 GPa and 300 K for a first time by a quantum-beat modulation of the decay rate after collective nuclear excitation by the synchrotron pulse. The basic concept and method used to detect nuclear forward scattering with synchrotron radiation are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

A theoretical treatment of inelastic scattering of low energy particles from surfaces is developed which treats the regime of multiple quantum phonon exchange. Good agreement is obtained with recently measured multiphonon backgrounds in the scattering of He by alkali halide and metal surfaces over a large range of surface temperatures and incident conditions. The results show that the multiphonon scattered intensity can give important information on the particle-surface interaction potential.  相似文献

The scattered field in the far-field region for two small metallic particles on a conducting substrate is analysed as a function of both their separation and the angle of incidence. Special attention is paid to multiple scattering, which appears when the particles are very close, as well as to its related effects such as its influence on the enhanced backscattering phenomenon and depolarization of the incident beam in the plane of incidence.  相似文献

An integrated software package TUSCAT (Tezpur University SCATtering Software) incorporated with a graphical user interface (GUI) was developed for modeling electromagnetic scattering from small particles and also to yield characteristic properties of the scattering particles from experimental data. Its interactive features enable the user to observe the changes in output scattering properties in real time. The interrelation of depolarization and decorrelation of optical fields in multiply scattering Brownian media is studied on the basis of the notion of the probability density of optical path lengths of the partial components of the scattered field under multiple-scattering conditions. To describe such media a universal parameter that is independent of the density (concentration) of scattering particles is introduced — the characteristic correlation time. Experimental results obtained with aqueous suspensions of polystyrene beads as model media are presented which demonstrate the constancy of this parameter at different concentrations of scattering particles. Abstract

This paper examines the behaviour of polarized light scattered by a medium containing small chiral spheroidal particles. We show that for single scattering the observed phenomena of optical activity may be interpreted in terms of an averaged Mueller matrix and describe how the degree of polarization is affected by such a medium. The polarization properties of multiply scattered light by chiral particles are considered through the use of Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the effects of chirality under multiple scattering can be interpreted as an order-preserving influence in a disordered system and that this influence can, in principle, be exploited for the purposes of imaging.  相似文献

This paper presents a mechanism of decay of elementary particles, which has been developed based on a new approach. The results obtained may be of interest to experimenters engaged in the decay of Z 0 bosons. Schemes and modes of the structural decay of gamma structures, one of which is the Z 0 boson, are given. Analysis of the schemes and modes of the structural decay has shown that the decays of the product triple-quark particles (products of the decay of a Z 0 boson into triple-quark particles) result in the occurrence of a new mode of decay – the decay of one triple-quark particle into three triple-quark particles. According to the proposed mechanism of the decay of particles, an electron, a muon, a triton, and a gamma photon are particles consisting of a quark–antiquark pair and having a spin equal to unity.  相似文献

Abstract

The scattering of electromagnetic waves in fractal media is studied. The fractal dimension is naturally involved in the formulation of two physical problems studied in this paper. The general theory of multiple scattering of electromagnetic wave in fractal media is developed by modifying Twersky's theory. Statistical quantities, such as the average field and average intensity of the multiple scattered wave, are studied for a wave propagating in a fractal medium. The scattering cross section of the medium is deduced. The backscattering of electromagnetic waves is also studied. The results showing the range of dependence of the backscattered signals are in agreement with numerical simulations by Rastogi and Scheucher (1990). It also suggests a method of measuring the fractal dimension of the fractal embedded media using radar sounding. The theory developed in this paper can also be used for problems related to multiple scattering of other kinds of waves, such as acoustic waves, elastic waves etc, in fractal media.  相似文献

Studies of nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation undertaken with the X-ray undulator installed in the TRISTAN Accumulation Ring at the National Laboratory for High Energy Physics, KEK, are reported. These studies have evaluated the effect of fast magnetic switching on the nuclear collective decay in an FeBO3 crystal, the change in the polarization state of nuclear Bragg scattering by fast magnetic switching, and the influence of this switching on the time evolution of the nuclear forward scattering. The phenomenon of interferometric nuclear forward scattering has also been studied.  相似文献

We present a simple and flexible method of keeping track of the complex phases and spin quantisation axes for half-spin initial- and final-state Weyl spinors in scattering amplitudes of Standard Model high energy physics processes. Both cases of massless and massive spinors are discussed. The method is demonstrated and checked numerically for spin correlations in production and decay. Its application is in our work of combining effects due to multiple photon emission (exponentiation) and spin, embodied in the Monte Carlo event generators for production and decay of unstable fermions such as the lepton, t-quark and hypothetical new heavy particles. In particular, the recurrent problem of combining, for such unstable fermions, one author's calculation of production and another author's calculation of decay, in the presence or absence of multiple photon effects, is there given a practical solution, both for Weyl spinor methods and for the traditional Jacob-Wick helicity methods. Moreover, for massive fermions we give a simple representation of the amplitude for emission ideally suited for numerical evaluation. No other method is known to us which for arbitrary n has been realized numerically for unstable, massive fermions. Our paper can contribute also, to the discussion on design principles of the phenomenology work for the future accelerators such as LHC or NLC. Fast ATLAS Tracking Simulation (Fatras) package was verified on single layer geometry with respect to full simulation with GEANT4. Fatras hadronic interactions and multiple scattering simulation were studied in comparison with GEANT4. Disagreement was found in multiple scattering distributions of primary charged particles (μ, π, e). A new model for multiple scattering simulation was implemented in Fatras. The model was based on R. Frühwirth’s mixture models. New model was tested on single layer geometry and a good agreement with GEANT4 was achieved. Also a comparison of reconstructed tracks’ parameters was performed for Inner Detector geometry, and Fatras with new multiple scattering model proved to have better agreement with GEANT4. New model of multiple scattering was added as a part of Fatras package in the development release of ATLAS software—ATHENA.  相似文献

Distributions of axially channeled electrons are calculated at large depths as a function of angular momentum and transverse energy. Due to the influence of multiple scattering the electron distributions become independent of the angular momentum at a depth, where the statistical equilibrium is reached. An approach has been developed that allows the Rayleigh scattering cross section to be calculated with allowance for the quantum character of motion of the center of mass of the trapped scattering particles. The shape of the line of light scattering from a Bose condensate in a parabolic trap has been studied. A shift of the scattering line center is equal to the recoil shift, while the line width depends on the chemical potential of the Bose gas and on the relaxation time of the velocity of the above-condensate recoil particles. A velocity distribution function in the beam of recoil atoms formed in the course of induced Rayleigh scattering is determined. It is shown that, under the typical experimental conditions, the characteristic width Δv/v of the recoil velocity distribution in this beam is on the order of 10?3 at a velocity v on the order of several centimeters per second.  相似文献

The anomalous electron-positron coincidences observed in heavy-ion collisions have been interpreted as signal for the pair decay of hitherto unknown neutral objects with masses around 1.8 MeV. We discuss the decay modes of such extended composite particles when they are bound to a nucleus. In particular we investigate the angular correlation of the emitted pair and the competing single-photon decay channel. We confront the particle hypothesis with recent negative results from experiments searching for resonances in Bhabha scattering. The induced pair decay of a metastable 1++ state in secondary collisions with target atoms is discussed as a possible explanation.  相似文献
