Damage to photoreceptive cells of insect compound eyes exposed to abnormally high doses of UV-radiation of 350nm peak wavelength manifests itself in at least two different ways. In the butterflies Papilio xuthus and Pieris napi from Japan and northern Finland, respectively, only the cell bodies of retinula cells 1 and 2, (identified as short wavelength receptors), but not their corresponding rhabdomeres, exhibit damage with apoptotic features. In the eye of UV-irradiated adult crickets, however, cell bodies and cytoplasm remain normal, while the rhabdomeres of cells 7 and 8 exhibit signs of severe membrane disruptions. No signs of damage whatsoever occurred in the eyes of northern Finnish bumblebees exposed to UV. It is suggested that metabolic shortfalls in the UV-sensitive cells of the butterfly eyes result in cellular shut-down, but that in the cricket receptors UV-induced changes of the membrane lipids dominate, leading to membrane instability without concomittant cell death. The strong resistance of the bumblebee eye to UV-induced damage requires further investigation, but since preconditioning to light can reduce photic damage in the rat eye, the 24h daylight experienced by northern Finnish bumblebees during the summer season could be involved.  相似文献

Experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), a disease induced in animals immunised at distant sites with retinal antigens, in conjunction with appropriate adjuvants, is a well recognised paradigm of various forms of human uveitis since many of the clinical and histopathological manifestations of the human disease can be closely mimicked in this model. Electron microscopy and other nonultrastructural morphological techniques have proven valuable tools in studying the pathology of EAU due to the highly organised and heterogeneous nature of the affected cells and tissues within the eye, namely the neural retina, retinak pigment epithelium and choroid. The role of various resident ocular immune cells including mast cells, dendritic cells, choroidal macrophages and retinal microglia in the induction and pathogenesis of EAU, is reviewed. In addition, the role of various effector cells in the inflammatory cell infiltrate, namely polymorphonuclear leukocytes, T cells and macrophages, and their interaction with retinal target cells is discussed. This review also considers the morphological changes which precede and accompany early inflammatory cell infiltration through the blood-ocular barrier which are of critical importance to initiation of the autoimmune process. In many ways EAU represents an ideal model for autoimmune diseases in general and especially for those involving the central nervous system. The precise microanatomical arrangement of the eye and its distinct blood-tissue barriers have allowed researchers studying EAU to precisely identify the target cells, pathways used by ingressing inflammatory cells and the nature of the effector cells in this disease.  相似文献

The visual system as an interface between the environment and the living organism can serve as a sensitive indicator especially in studies that deal with effects of radiation. The crab retina as the seat of the photoreceptors and the lamina ganglionaris as the place of second order neurons were the targets of our study. Conventional specimen preparation techniques for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are adequate to preserve any modifications that may occur as a consequence of the experimental treatment. In this study we analyzed by TEM how retinal and lamina ganglionaris cells of the crab Ucides cordatus responded to a 30 min exposure to ultraviolet C (UV-C) and ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation with doses of 7200 and 590 J/cm2, respectively. The results show that damaged cells occurred in both retina and lamina ganglionaris, but that the retinal cells were affected to a greater extent. Morphological alterations of the pigment granules and an increase in the quantity of lipid droplets of the retinal cells were also observed. Additional changes include an increase in heterochromatin, nuclear karyolyses and karyorrhexes, distention of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial disruptions. The observed morphological changes are indicative of apoptotic processes and show that an exposure to light of wavelengths of 254 and 312 nm may be injurious to the visual system of invertebrates.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to determine if there are acoustical differences between male and female voices, and if there are, where exactly do these differences lie. Extended speech samples were used. The recorded readings of a text by 31 women and by 24 men were analyzed by means of the Long-term Spectrum (LTAS), extracting the amplitude values (in decibels) at intervals of 160 Hz over a range of 8 kHz. The results showed a significant difference between genders, as well as an interaction of gender and frequency level. The female voice showed greater levels of aspiration noise, located in the spectral regions corresponding to the third formant, which causes the female voice to have a more “breathy” quality than the male voice. The lower spectral tilt in the women's voices is another consequence of this presence of greater aspiration noise.  相似文献

A modified arrangement of the adaptive optical retinal imaging system that we described previously is proposed to reduce the intensity loss in the system, so that it works properly even when the intensity of light incident on the eye is very weak. Experiments to verify the system performance were conducted using a conventional artificial eye with a specular reflector as a model retina. We observed that an image of a test target (mimicking a retina) blurred by an aberration plate (mimicking the ocular aberrations) was successfully restored in the adaptive optics fashion even when the intensity of the incident light probing the aberration of the eye became about 1.5% of that required in the previous system. Effect of a more realistic artificial eye with a scattering object as a model retina was also examined experimentally. We found that not only the ocular aberrations, but also the retinal scattering cause the wave-front deformations and that our adaptive optics system compensates for both of them simultaneously.  相似文献

The in vivo flow cytometer is an instrument capable of continuous, real-time monitoring of fluorescently labeled cells in the circulation without the need to draw blood samples. However, the original system probes a single vessel in the mouse ear; the small sample volume limits the sensitivity of the technique. We describe an in vivo retinal flow cytometer that simultaneously probes five artery-vein pairs in the mouse eye by circularly scanning a small laser spot rapidly around the optic nerve head. We demonstrate that the retinal flow cytometer detects about five times more cells per minute than the original in vivo flow cytometer does in the ear.  相似文献

The tuatara Sphenodon punctatus, restricted to a few New Zealand offshore islands and now strictly protected, belongs to the Rhynchocephalia, the smallest order of extant reptiles. Earlier light microscopical studies on the retina of this species described photoreceptors with both rod- and cone-like features and the presence of a fovea. A limited amount of retinal material from S. punctatus has now allowed us to prepare the first-ever electron microscopic observations on the eye of this reptile. We were able to distinguish three types of photoreceptor, all with fine structural features characteristic of cone cells. Large single cones as well as double cones had open discs in their outer segments and straight axons with pedicle-type terminals. An additional cone type, characterized by somewhat more slender inner and outer segments, vitreally-displaced cell bodies and oblique axons, resembled short-wavelength cones known from other sauropsids. No cells with rod characteristics could be confirmed in the samples, although they might occur in retinal regions not available for this study. We conclude that the tuatara has cone-like photoreceptors, which-as in other crepuscular or nocturnal reptiles-have acquired rod-like features. The phenotypic adaptations notwithstanding, the set of photoreceptor types is quite typical of the reptilian eye and in some respects reminiscent of those seen in lizards and turtles.  相似文献

Smell is often regarded as an ancillary perception in primates, who seem so dominated by their sense of vision. In this paper, we will portray some aspects of the significance of olfaction to human life and speculate on what evolutionary factors contribute to keeping it alive. We then outline the functional architecture of olfactory sensory neurons and their signal transduction pathways, which are the primary detectors that render olfactory perception possible. Throughout the phylogenetic tree, olfactory neurons, at their apical tip, are either decorated with cilia or with microvilli. The significance of this dichotomy is unknown. It is generally assumed that mammalian olfactory neurons are of the ciliary type only. The existence of so-called olfactory microvillar cells in mammals, however, is well documented, but their nature remains unclear and their function orphaned. This paper discusses the possibility, that in the main olfactory epithelium of mammals ciliated and microvillar sensory cells exist concurrently. We review evidence related to this hypothesis and ask, what function olfactory microvillar cells might have and what signalling mechanisms they use.  相似文献

This study investigates the integration system of head (-to-trunk), eye (-to-head), and retinal position signals for hand pointing. In experiment 1, subjects changed their head and eye positions and pointed at a fixated visual stimulus by using an unseen pointer. In experiment 2, subjects fixated a visual stimulus and pointed at another visual stimulus. The results show that the head and eye position signals contributed linearly to perceptual direction (experiments 1 and 2), and that the coefficients of these signals decrease with peripheral vision and are smaller than the coefficient of the retinal position signal (experiment 2). These results collectively suggest that the integration algorithm of the position signals might be described by the linear summation equation and that the retinal position signal serves a more important role than the other position signals in the visual system.  相似文献

The relative contributions of optical aberrations of the cornea and the crystalline lens to the final image quality of the human eye were studied. The aberrations of the entire eye were obtained from pairs of double-pass retinal images, and the aberrations of the cornea were obtained from videokeratographic data. Third-order spherical aberration and coma were significantly larger for the cornea than for the complete eye, indicating a significant role of the lens in compensating for corneal aberrations. In a second experiment retinal images were recorded in an eye before and after we neutralized the aberrations of the cornea by having the subjects wear swimming goggles filled with saline water, providing a direct estimate of the optical performance of the crystalline lens.  相似文献

Three experiments used the Coordinated Response Measure task to examine the roles that differences in F0 and differences in vocal-tract length have on the ability to attend to one of two simultaneous speech signals. The first experiment asked how increases in the natural F0 difference between two sentences (originally spoken by the same talker) affected listeners' ability to attend to one of the sentences. The second experiment used differences in vocal-tract length, and the third used both F0 and vocal-tract length differences. Differences in F0 greater than 2 semitones produced systematic improvements in performance. Differences in vocal-tract length produced systematic improvements in performance when the ratio of lengths was 1.08 or greater, particularly when the shorter vocal tract belonged to the target talker. Neither of these manipulations produced improvements in performance as great as those produced by a different-sex talker. Systematic changes in both F0 and vocal-tract length that simulated an incremental shift in gender produced substantially larger improvements in performance than did differences in F0 or vocal-tract length alone. In general, shifting one of two utterances spoken by a female voice towards a male voice produces a greater improvement in performance than shifting male towards female. The increase in performance varied with the intonation patterns of individual talkers, being smallest for those talkers who showed most variability in their intonation patterns between different utterances.  相似文献

Ocular toxoplasmosis is present in 20% of infected immunocompetent individuals. Toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of posterior uveitis in immunocompetent subjects and congenital toxoplasmosis transmission was the first parasite to be linked to human lesions in the eye. An experimental model for congenital ocular toxoplasmosis was developed in C57BL/6 mice with the purpose to evaluate Toxoplasma induced ocular pathology during fetal life. Toxoplasma gondii, ME-49 strain, was used to infect pregnant females. Histological analysis of pre-natal fetal eyes from infected female mice, did not show parasite infestation, however, alterations were observed in the outer nuclear layer (ONL) and in the inner nuclear layers (INL) of the retina. Edema was also observed, characterized by the increase of interstitial spaces forming lacunae between the ONL and INL cells and a net of vessels associated with an intense inflammatory infiltrate. These histological observations suggest that ocular lesions are not delayed manifestations of toxoplasmosis. The eye was affected in the initial phase of disease, and these alterations were of similar nature as those observed in mice at later stages of infection.  相似文献

Background  

Several neurodegenerative diseases are influenced by complex genetics that affect an individual's susceptibility, disease severity, and rate of progression. One such disease is glaucoma, a chronic neurodegenerative condition of the eye that targets and stimulates apoptosis of CNS neurons called retinal ganglion cells. Since ganglion cell death is intrinsic, it is reasonable that the genes that control this process may contribute to the complex genetics that affect ganglion cell susceptibility to disease. To determine if genetic background influences susceptibility to optic nerve damage, leading to ganglion cell death, we performed optic nerve crush on 15 different inbred lines of mice and measured ganglion cell loss. Resistant and susceptible strains were used in a reciprocal breeding strategy to examine the inheritance pattern of the resistance phenotype. Because earlier studies had implicated Bax as a susceptibility allele for ganglion cell death in the chronic neurodegenerative disease glaucoma, we conducted allelic segregation analysis and mRNA quantification to assess this gene as a candidate for the cell death phenotype.  相似文献

Recent studies of retinal damage due to ultrashort laser pulses have shown that less energy is required for retinal damage for pulses shorter than 1 ns than that for longer pulses. It has also been shown that more energy is required for near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths than in the visible because the light focuses behind the retina, requiring more energy to produce a damaging fluence on the retina. We review the progress made in determining the trends in retinal damage from laser pulses of 1 ns to 100 fs in the visible and NIR wavelength regimes. We have determined the most likely damage mechanism(s) operative in this pulse width regime.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to provide accurately focused, high-resolution in vivo human retinal depth images using an optically deviated focusing method with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) system. The proposed method was applied to increase the retinal diagnosing speed of patients with various values of retinal distances (i.e., the distance between the crystalline eye lens and the retina). The increased diagnosing speed was facilitated through an optical modification in the OCT sample arm configuration. Moreover, the optical path length matching process was compensated using the proposed optically deviated focusing method. The developed system was mounted on a bench-top cradle to overcome the motion artifacts. Further, we demonstrated the capability of the system by carrying out in vivo retinal imaging experiments. The clinical trials confirmed that the system was effective in diagnosing normal and abnormal retinal layers as several retinal abnormalities were identified using non-averaged single-shot OCT images, which demonstrate the feasibility of the method for clinical applications.  相似文献

The purpose of the experiment was to explore relations between jaw and laryngeal functions. The general question was whether laryngeal adduction was affected by jaw opening or by jaw biting. Twelve untrained, vocally healthy male and female adults participated as subjects. Subjects produced repeated tokens of /uh/ in each of 12 experimental conditions involving combinations of 3 jaw openings (10 mm, 25 mm, 40 mm), 2 jaw biting pressures (10 kPa, 200 kPa), and 2 fundamental frequencies (conversational and high). For each token, laryngeal adduction was estimated from the electroglottographic closed quotient. The most straightforward results were that (1) laryngeal adduction increased as jaw opening increased at the conversational pitch, for all subjects, independent of biting pressure, and (2) laryngeal adduction increased as biting pressure increased, at the conversational pitch, for males, independent of jaw opening. Other relations between estimated laryngeal adduction and jaw manipulations were more complex, varying with fundamental frequency and gender. Speculations are made about possible biomechanical and neurological explanations for the findings.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there was an effect of task on determination of habitual pitch, or speaking fundamental frequency (SFF). Seven tasks commonly used to elicit habitual pitch in clinical voice evaluations were compared. Three groups of normal subjects (N = 36) were examined (adult males, adult females, and male and female prepubescent children). For the adult male (n = 12) and pediatric (n = 12) subjects, no significant effect of task was found. For the adult female (n = 12) subjects, a statistically significant (P < .001) effect of task was found. All tasks were found to have high (>0.90) test-retest reliability for all subjects. Implications of the use of one task for determination of habitual pitch are discussed, as is the possibility of a task effect on determination of other voice parameters.  相似文献
