A recently developed technique in sum frequency generation spectroscopy, polarization angle null (or PAN-SFG), is applied to two orientations of the prism face of hexagonal ice. It is found that the vibrational modes of the surface are similar in different faces. As in the basal face, the prism face of ice contains five dominant resonances: 3096, 3146, 3205, 3253, and 3386 cm(-1). On the basal face, the reddest resonance occurs at 3098 cm(-1); within the bandwidth, the same as the prism face. On both the prism and basal faces, this mode contains a significant quadrupole component and is assigned to the bilayer stitching hydrogen bonds. The bluest of the resonances, 3386 cm(-1), occurs slightly blue-shifted at 3393 cm(-1) in the basal face. The prism face has two orientations: one with the optic or c axis in the input plane (the plane formed by the surface normal and the interrogating beam propagation) and one with the c axis perpendicular to the input plane. The 3386 cm(-1) mode has significant intensity only with the c axis in the input plane. On the basis of these orientation characteristics, the 3386 cm(-1) mode is assigned to double-donor molecules in either the top half bilayer or in the lower half bilayer. On the basis of frequency considerations, it is assigned to double-donor molecules in the top half bilayer. These are water molecules containing a nonbonded lone pair. In addition to identification of the components of the broad hydrogen-bonded region, PAN-SFG measures the tangential vs longitudinal content of the vibrational modes. In accord with previous suggestions, the lower frequency modes are predominantly tangential, whereas the higher frequency modes are mainly longitudinal. On the prism face, the 3386 cm(-1) mode is entirely longitudinal.  相似文献

We report the sum frequency generation (SFG) spectra of aqueous sodium iodide interfaces computed with the methodology outlined by Morita and Hynes (J. Phys. Chem. B 2002, 106, 673), which is based on molecular dynamics simulations. The calculated spectra are in qualitative agreement with experiment. Our simulations show that the addition of sodium iodide to water leads to an increase in SFG intensity in the region of 3400 cm(-1), which is correlated with an increase in ordering of hydrogen-bonded water molecules. Depth-resolved orientational distribution functions suggest that the ion double layer orders water molecules that are approximately one water layer below the Gibbs dividing surface. We attribute the increase in SFG intensity to these ordered subsurface water molecules that are present in the aqueous sodium iodide/air interfaces but are absent in the neat water/air interface.  相似文献

We provide the first account of the second-order susceptibility of quartz down to 10 mum (1000 cm(-1)) and show how this data may be used along with the sum-frequency response of an amorphous gold surface to elucidate the nonlinear susceptibility of any material in the mid-infrared region. Crystalline quartz is an established material for use in second-harmonic and sum-frequency generation studies of new systems, on account of its well-characterized linear and nonlinear optical properties. Previous knowledge of its nonlinear susceptibility has been limited to its transparent region, wavelengths shorter than about 3 mum. Longer wavelength chi((2)) values for quartz are particularly important for techniques such as vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy which are expanding into the mid-IR with the increasing availability of widely tunable infrared laser sources.  相似文献

The structure of thin films of 1- and 2-butylimidazoles adsorbed on copper and steel surfaces under air was examined using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy in the ppp and ssp polarizations. Additionally, the SFG spectra of both isomers were recorded at 55 °C at the liquid imidazole/air interface for reference. Complementary bulk infrared, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and Raman spectra of both imidazoles were recorded for assignment purposes. The SFG spectra in the C-H stretching region at the liquid/air interface are dominated by resonances from the methyl end group of the butyl side chain of the imidazoles, indicating that they are aligned parallel or closely parallel to the surface normal. These are also the most prominent features in the SFG spectra on copper and steel. In addition, both the ppp and ssp spectra on copper show resonances from the C-H stretching modes of the imidazole ring for both isomers. The ring C-H resonances are completely absent from the spectra on steel and at the liquid/air interface. The relative intensities of the SFG spectra can be interpreted as showing that, on copper, under air, both butylimidazoles are adsorbed with their butyl side chains perpendicular to the interface and with the ring significantly inclined away from the surface plane and toward the surface normal. The SFG spectra of both imidazoles on steel indicate an orientation where the imidazole rings are parallel or nearly parallel to the surface. The weak C-H resonances from the ring at the liquid/air interface suggest that the tilt angle of the ring from the surface normal at this interface is significantly greater than it is on copper.  相似文献

The air/water interface was simulated and the mode amplitudes and their ratios of the effective nonlinear sum-frequency generation (SFG) susceptibilities (A(eff)'s) were calculated for the ssp, ppp, and sps polarization combinations and compared with experiments. By designating "surface-sensitive" free OH bonds on the water surface, many aspects of the SFG measurements were calculated and compared with those inferred from experiment. We calculate an average tilt angle close to the SFG observed value of 35, an average surface density of free OH bonds close to the experimental value of about 2.8 × 10(18) m(-2), computed ratios of A(eff)'s that are very similar to those from the SFG experiment, and their absolute values that are in reasonable agreement with experiment. A one-parameter model was used to calculate these properties. The method utilizes results available from independent IR and Raman experiments to obtain some of the needed quantities, rather than calculating them ab initio. The present results provide microscopic information on water structure useful to applications such as in our recent theory of on-water heterogeneous catalysis.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation spectroscopy has been used to investigate the hydrogen-bonded region of single-crystal, hexagonal ice in the temperature range of 113-178 K. The temperature and polarization dependences of the signal are used in conjunction with a recent theoretical model to suggest an interpretation of the bluest and reddest of the hydrogen-bonded peaks. The reddest feature is associated with strong hydrogen bonding; the dynamic polarizability of this feature is primarily parallel to the surface. It is assigned to a cooperative motion among the companion to the free-OH and four-coordinate oscillators hydrogen bonded to dangling lone-pair molecules on the surface. The bluest hydrogen-bonded feature is similarly assigned to a cooperative motion of the OH stretch of dangling lone-pair molecules and of four-coordinate molecules in the lower half bilayer that are hydrogen bonded to free-OH molecules. Reconstruction induced strain is present at as low as 113 K. These results provide a richer picture of the ice surface than has heretofore been possible.  相似文献

Protein and surfactant modified air–water interfaces are an important model system for colloid science as many applications for example aqueous foams in food products rely on our knowledge and ability to tune molecular structures at these interfaces. That is because interfaces are a fundamental building block in the hierarchical structure of foam, where in fact the molecular level can determine properties on larger length scales. For that reason it is of great importance to increase our ability to study air–water interfaces with molecular level probes and to obtain not only information on coverage but also direct information on interfacial composition, molecular order, orientations as well as information on the charged state of an interface. Vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) is a powerful tool that can help to address these issues and is inherently surface sensitive. In this contribution we will review recent developments in the use of SFG for studies of biomolecules at aqueous interfaces and discuss current issues with the interpretation of SFG spectra from electrified interfaces. In order to guide interpretations from interface spectroscopy we invoke the use of complementary methods such as ellipsometry and zetapotential measurements of bulk molecules.  相似文献

A new computational scheme is presented for calculation of sum frequency generation (SFG) spectra, based on the exciton model for OH bonds. The scheme is applied to unified analysis of the SFG spectra in the OH-stretch region of the surfaces of ice, liquid water, and acid solution. A significant role of intermolecularly coupled collective modes is pointed out. SFG intensity amplification observed for acid solutions in the H-bonded OH-stretch region is reproduced qualitatively and accounted for by enhanced orientational preference "into the surface" of the H(2)O bisectors within the hydronium solvation shell.  相似文献

A compact broadband vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy (SFG) apparatus is described to study molecules at surfaces and interfaces. Using an étalon as the frequency narrowing device, the visible pulse has a time-asymmetric profile that allows the user to deeply suppress nonresonant background signals that hinder detection of molecular vibrational resonances. Several features of the spectrometer that, in aggregate, improve signal-to-noise ratios by a large factor are described. The spectrometer features a series of interchangeable prealigned sample holders for different applications. Examples of applications are presented where nonresonant suppression greatly improves the ability to study adsorbates on single-crystal surfaces as a function of rotation about the azimuth, and where the rapid data acquisition abilities of the spectrometer are used to study electrochemical transformations on single-crystal electrodes.  相似文献

A method to determine the absolute orientation of molecules at liquid interfaces by sum frequency generation (SFG) is reported. It is based on measurements of the orientations of two nonparallel vibrationally active chromophores in the molecule of interest combined with a rotation matrix formulation to obtain the absolute molecular orientation. We chose m-tolunitrile, a planar molecule adsorbed to the air/water interface, as a proof-of-method experiment. Quantitative analysis of different polarization sum frequency intensities facilitate unique peak assignments of the methyl and nitrile groups of m-tolunitrile. The SFG analysis of the measurement yields a nitrile group tilting at 53 degrees to the surface normal, and the C3 axis of the methyl group is almost upright at 23 degrees with respect to the surface normal. Using a rotation matrix formulation, we found that the angle between the surface plane and the m-tolunitrile molecular plane is 70 degrees.  相似文献

The segregation behavior of binary polymer blends at hydrophilic solid sapphire and air interfaces was investigated by infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG spectra were collected from a bulk miscible blend consisting of identical molecular weight (approximately 54,000) and similar surface free energy (29-35 dyn/cm) components of atactic polypropylene (aPP) and aspecific poly(ethylene-co-propylene) rubber (aEPR). Characteristic CH resonances of the blend were contrasted with those of the individual components at both buried (sapphire/polymer) and free (air/polymer) interfaces. Preferential segregation of the aPP component was observed after annealing at both air/polymer and sapphire/polymer interfaces. SFG spectra revealed ordering of the polymer backbone segments with the methylene (CH2) groups perpendicular to the surface at the sapphire interface and the methyl (CH3) groups upright at the air interface. The SFG results indicate that the surface composition can be determined from the peak intensities that are characteristic of each component and that conformational entropy played a likely role in surface segregation. aPP occupied a smaller free volume at the surface because of a statistically smaller segment length (aPP is more flexible and has a shorter length). In addition, the high density of the ordered CH3 side branches enhanced the surface activity by allowing the long-chain backbone segments of aPP to order at the surface.  相似文献

Adsorption states of dioctyl dichalcogenides (dioctyl disulfide, dioctyl diselenide, and dioctyl ditelluride) arranged on Au(111) have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (SFG), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). XPS measurements suggest that dioctyl dichalcogenides dissociatively adsorbed on Au(111) surfaces to form the corresponding monolayers having chalcogen-gold covalent bonds. The elemental compositions of octanechalcogenolates on Au(111) indicate that the saturation coverages of the octyl heavy chalcogenolate (OcSe, OcTe) monolayers are lower than that of the octanethiolate (OcS) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). The SFG observations of the CH(2) vibrational bands for the heavy chalcogenolate monolayers strongly suggest that a discernible amount of gauche conformation exists in the monolayers, while OcS SAMs adopt highly ordered all-trans conformation. The intensity ratio of the symmetric and asymmetric CH(3) stretching vibration modes measured by SFG shows that the average tilt angle of the methyl group of the OcSe monolayers is greater than that of the OcS SAMs. The larger tilt angle of the methyl group and the existence of a discernible amount of gauche conformation in the OcSe monolayers are due to the lower surface coverage of the OcSe monolayers compared with the OcS SAMs. The smaller polarization dependence in the angle-resolved UPS (ARUPS) spectra of the OcSe monolayers than that of the OcS SAMs is caused by the more disordered structures of the alkyl chain in the former. XPS, SFG, and ARUPS measurements indicate a similar tendency for the OcTe monolayers. The density of states (DOS) observed by UPS at around 1.3 eV for OcS adsorbed on Au(111) is considered to be the antibonding state of the Au-sulfur bond. Similar DOS is also observed by UPS at around 1.0 eV for the OcSe monolayers and at approximately 1.6 eV for the OcTe monolayers on Au(111).  相似文献

The surface chemistry of ions, water molecules, and proteins as well as their ability to form stable networks in foams can influence and control macroscopic properties such as taste and texture of dairy products considerably. Despite the significant relevance of protein adsorption at liquid interfaces, a molecular level understanding on the arrangement of proteins at interfaces and their interactions has been elusive. Therefore, we have addressed the adsorption of the model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) at the air-water interface with vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) and ellipsometry. SFG provides specific information on the composition and average orientation of molecules at interfaces, while complementary information on the thickness of the adsorbed layer can be obtained with ellipsometry. Adsorption of charged BSA proteins at the water surface leads to an electrified interface, pH dependent charging, and electric field-induced polar ordering of interfacial H(2)O and BSA. Varying the bulk pH of protein solutions changes the intensities of the protein related vibrational bands substantially, while dramatic changes in vibrational bands of interfacial H(2)O are simultaneously observed. These observations have allowed us to determine the isoelectric point of BSA directly at the electrolyte-air interface for the first time. BSA covered air-water interfaces with a pH near the isoelectric point form an amorphous network of possibly agglomerated BSA proteins. Finally, we provide a direct correlation of the molecular structure of BSA interfaces with foam stability and new information on the link between microscopic properties of BSA at water surfaces and macroscopic properties such as the stability of protein foams.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy has been applied to study the molecular surface structures of polystyrene (PS)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends and the copolymer between PS and PMMA (PS-co-PMMA) in air, supplemented by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle goniometer. Both the blend and the copolymer have equal weight amounts of the two components. SFG results show that both components, PS and PMMA, can segregate to the surface of the blend and the copolymer before annealing, although PMMA has a slightly higher surface tension. Upon annealing both SFG results and contact angle measurements indicate that the PS segregates to the surface of the PS/PMMA blend more but no change occurs on the PS-co-PMMA surface. AFM images show that the copolymer surface is flat but the 1:1 PS/PMMA blend has a rougher surface with island like domains present. The annealing effect on the blend surface morphology has also been investigated. We collected amide SFG signals from interfacial fibrinogen molecules at the copolymer or blend/protein solution interfaces as a function of time. Different time-dependent SFG signal changes have been observed, showing that different surfaces of the blend and the copolymer mediate fibrinogen adsorption behavior differently.  相似文献

Water around hydrophobic groups mediates hydrophobic interactions that play key roles in many chemical and biological processes. Thus, the molecular-level elucidation of the properties of water in the vicinity of hydrophobic groups is important. We report on the structure and dynamics of water at two oppositely charged hydrophobic ion/water interfaces, that is, the tetraphenylborate-ion (TPB)/water and tetraphenylarsonium-ion (TPA+)/water interfaces, which are clarified by two-dimensional heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation (2D HD-VSFG) spectroscopy. The obtained 2D HD-VSFG spectra of the anionic TPB interface reveal the existence of distinct π-hydrogen bonded OH groups in addition to the usual hydrogen-bonded OH groups, which are hidden in the steady-state spectrum. In contrast, 2D HD-VSFG spectra of the cationic TPA+ interface only show the presence of usual hydrogen-bonded OH groups. The present study demonstrates that the sign of the interfacial charge governs the structure and dynamics of water molecules that face the hydrophobic region.  相似文献

A novel space-filling trialkoxysilane derivative was synthesized using a two-step strategy from commercially available starting materials to produce the precursor for the formation of low-density self-assembled monolayers. Self-assembled monolayers of the synthesized compound were prepared on three different substrates (Si/SiO(2), glass and ITO) and were characterized using contact angle, ellipsometry and sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. Removal of the space-filling protecting group, (2-chlorophenyl)diphenyl methanol, yields a carboxy-terminated surface. Correspondingly, the contact angle and film thickness decrease and the SFG spectra clearly indicate an increase in gauche defect concentration characteristic of a low-density disordered monolayer.  相似文献

Polyimides are widely used as chip passivation layers and organic substrates in microelectronic packaging. Plasma treatment has been used to enhance the interfacial properties of polyimides, but its molecularmechanism is not clear. In this research, the effects of polyimide surface plasma treatment on the molecular structures at corresponding polyimide/air and buried polyimide/epoxy interfaces were investigated in situ using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG results show that the polyimide backbone molecular structure was different at polyimide/air and polyimide/epoxy interfaces before and after plasma treatment. The different molecular structures at each interface indicate that structural reordering of the polyimide backbone occurred as a result of plasma treatment and contact with the epoxy adhesive. Furthermore, quantitative orientation analysis indicated that plasma treatment of polyimide surfaces altered the twist angle of the polyimide backbone at corresponding buried polyimide/epoxy interfaces. These SFG results indicate that plasma treatment of polymer surfaces can alter the molecular structure at corresponding polymer/air and buried polymer interfaces.  相似文献

The orientation of alkyl sulfonyl side-chains on a series of polyoxyethylenes, CH3nSE (n?=?6, 8 or 10), and the effect of annealing and rubbing on the molecular orientation of the alkyl side-chains at the substrate surface, were investigated using sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. Based on the SFG spectra and their quantitative interpretation, we deduced that the alkyl chains of CH3–10SE are almost vertically oriented at the surface and that the terminal methyl groups of the alkyl chains are tilted from the surface normal as much as θ ≈ 40?±?5°, with a broad distribution of tilt angles. We also found that rubbing treatment induced the anisotropic orientation of the alkyl side-chains perpendicular to the rubbing direction, but their orientation was unchanged by annealing.  相似文献
