The deformation, drainage, and rupture of an axisymmetrical film between colliding drops in the presence of insoluble surfactants under the influence of van der Waals forces is studied numerically at small capillary and Reynolds numbers and small surfactant concentrations. Constant-force collisions of Newtonian drops in another Newtonian fluid are considered. The mathematical model is based on the lubrication equations in the gap between drops and the creeping flow approximation of Navier–Stokes equations in the drops, coupled with velocity and stress boundary conditions at the interfaces. A nonuniform surfactant concentration on the interfaces, governed by a convection–diffusion equation, leads to a gradient of the interfacial tension which in turn leads to additional tangential stress on the interfaces (Marangoni effects). The mathematical problem is solved by a finite-difference method on a nonuniform mesh at the interfaces and a boundary-integral method in the drops. The whole range of the dispersed to continuous-phase viscosity ratios is investigated for a range of values of the dimensionless surfactant concentration, Peclét number, and dimensionless Hamaker constant (covering both “nose” and “rim” rupture). In the limit of the large Peclét number and the small dimensionless Hamaker constant (characteristic of drops in the millimeter size range) a fair approximation to the results is provided by a simple expression for the critical surfactant concentration, drainage being virtually uninfluenced by the surfactant for concentrations below the critical surfactant concentration and corresponding to that for immobile interfaces for concentrations above it.  相似文献

The structure factor of aqueous solutions of the globular protein β-lactoglobulin was determined as a function of heating time at 76°C. We show how the effect of multiple scattering on the scattered light intensity can be effectively corrected using cross-correlation dynamic light scattering even if the transmission is only 1%. The structure factor of aggregated and gelled proteins can be described by the Ornstein–Zernike equation. The system is characterized by a correlation length that increases with heating time and stabilizes some time after the gel is formed. The correlation length of the protein gels decreases with decreasing concentration. Measurements after progressive dilution of a sample close to the gel point showed that the protein aggregates are initially interpenetrated and disinterpenetrate upon dilution.  相似文献

The desorption rate of surfactant ions from nylon particles was investigated at the concentrations below the critical micelle concentration by applying the stopped-flow method. A mixing cell of stopped-flow spectrophotometer was modified with platinum electrodes for electric conductivity detection. The change in electric conductivity with time in the desorption process was monitored by a memory-recorder system. The surfactants used were sodium decyl, sodium dodecyl, sodium tetradecyl, and sodium hexadecyl sulfates. The desorption rate was independent of the surfactant concentration and the rate constants were obtained by applying the first-order reaction scheme. The adsorption rate constants were estimated from the experimental desorption rate constants and equilibrium constants assuming the second-order kinetics. The desorption rate constants were determined to be 1–6 sec–1 and the adsorption rate constants to be 2–8×104 mol–1 dm3 sec–1; the former decreased and the latter increased with increasing number of carbon atoms in alkyl chain of the surfactants.  相似文献

Iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and octyl moieties were covalently bound on nonporous particles, which were prepared from dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate and glycidyl methacrylate. After being charged with copper ions, the IDA-bound particles could specifically adsorb deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) through the affinity interaction between protein and immobilized metal ion. A mixed-ligand (metal–chelate and octyl–bound) support was obtained after hydrophobic (octyl) groups were also introduced to the particle surface. The affinity adsorption of DNase I on the copper–IDA chelate was influenced by interaction between the protein and the bound octyl group. Both the affinity and the hydrophobic interactions could be well described by the Langmuir isotherms. The equilibrium adsorption constants were estimated separately to be 0.96 and 0.50 liter g−1 for affinity and hydrophobic bindings, respectively. For binding on mixed-ligand support, the adsorption constant was 0.45 liter g−1. It was evident that both affinity and hydrophobic interactions are involved in the adsorption of proteins onto mixed-ligand particles. Desorption of the inactive proteins from the support was possible by increasing the hydrophobicity of the solution.  相似文献

The effect of TbCl3 on the aggregation processes of the anionic surfactants sodium decyl sulfate (SDeS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) has been investigated. Electrical conductivity data, combined with Tb(III) luminescence measurements suggest that the formation of micelles involving TbCl3 and SDS occurs at concentrations below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the pure surfactants; the formation of these mixed aggregates was also monitored by light scattering, which indicates that the addition of TbCl3 to surfactant concentration at values below the pure surfactant cmc results in a much greater light scattering than that found with pure sodium alkylsulfate surfactant micelles. This phenomenon is dependent upon the alkyl chain length of the surfactant. With Tb(III)/DS-, complexes are formed with a cation/anion binding ratio varying from 3 to 6, which depends upon the initial concentration of Tb(III). This suggests that the majority of the cation hydration water molecules can be exchanged by the anionic surfactant. When the carbon chain length decreases, interactions between surfactant and Tb(III) also decrease, alterations in conductivity and fluorescence data are not so significant and, consequently, no binding ratio can be detected even if existing. The surfactant micellization is dependent on the presence of electrolyte in solution with apparent cmc being lower than the corresponding cmc value of pure SDS.  相似文献

Although hydrotropy is extensively used in industry, the molecular mechanism of hydrotropic solubilization has not been completely elucidated yet. In this paper the interaction between a nonionic surfactant (ethoxylated fatty alcohol containing between five and six oxyethylenic units) and sodium p-toluene sulfonate is examined. Surface tension measurements confirm that the hydrotropic effect occurs at a concentration in which the hydrotropes self-associate. Photon correlation spectroscopy studies show that for this concentration of hydrotropes a drastic reduction in the surfactant micellar radius occurs. Furthermore the luminescence of the hydrotrope used as a fluorescence probe indicates that at low concentrations p-toluene sulfonate dissolves in the surfactant micelles but beyond the minimum concentration for hydrotropic solubilization the hydrotrope is present in the aqueous phase. These results suggest that the hydrotropic effect is related to alterations in the water structure induced by the hydrotrope molecules and to the presence of hydrotrope aggregates that furnish an appropriate niche for the surfactant amphiphile.  相似文献

Specific conductivities of alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chlorides (alkyl=decyl-, dodecyl-, tetradecyl-, and hexadecyl-) in aqueous solutions were measured as a function of molality and temperature. Critical micelle molalities (cmc) and degrees of ionization of the micelles, beta, were estimated from the dependence of the specific conductivity on molality. It was found that temperature dependence of cmc is U-shaped with a minimum shifting toward higher temperatures with a decrease in the chain length of the alkyl group. The temperature dependence of ln xcmc (where xcmc is the cmc in mole fraction units) was fitted to the equation of Muller, which we modified by taking into account the temperature dependencies both of beta and of change in heat capacity upon micellization. From the fitting parameters, Gibbs free energies, enthalpies, and entropies of micellization as a function of temperature were estimated.  相似文献

The absorption spectra of 6′-apo-β-caroten-6′-ol (1), 6′-apo-β-caroten-6′-oic acid (2), and ethyl 6′-apo-β-caroten-6′-oate (3) were analyzed in homogeneous media and in reversed micelles of AOT (sodium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) in n-heptane. The possible solute–solvent interactions of these compounds were analyzed in pure solvents by Taft and Kamlet's solvatochromic comparison method. These carotenoids show sensitivity similar to that of medium polarity-polarizability as measured by π*. Moreover, the absorption spectra of carotenoid 3 and to much less extent carotenoid 2 display broadening of the visible bands induced by polar solvents characteristic of carotenoids that contain a carbonyl functional group in conjugation with the carbon–carbon π-electron system. They are also sensitive to the ability of the solvent to accept protons in a hydrogen bond interaction measured by β. This sensitivity follows the expected order: 2>1>3. In the reverse micellar system, while the spectra for 3 remain unchanged, the intensity of the absorption band characteristic of n-heptane for 1 and 2 decreases as the AOT concentration increases, and a new band develops. This new band is attributed to the solute bound to the micelle interface. These changes allowed us to determine the binding constant (Kb) between these compounds and AOT. At W0=[H2O]/[AOT]=0 the values of Kb of 326±5 and 6.2±0.3 were found for the acid 2 and the alcohol 1, respectively. The strength of binding is interpreted considering their hydrogen-bond donor ability and the solubility in the organic pseudophase. For 1Kbdecreases as W0 is increased, while for 2 no variation was observed. These effects are discussed in terms of carotenoid–water competition for interfacial binding sites.  相似文献

Yeast alcohol dehydrogenase (YADH) solubilized in reverse micelles of aerosol OT (i.e., AOT or sodium bis (2-ethyl hexyl) sulfosuccinate) in isooctane has been shown to be catalytically more active than that in aqueous buffer under optimum conditions of pH, temperature, and water content in reverse micelles. Studies of the secondary structure conformational changes of the enzyme in reverse micelles have been made from circular dichroism spectroscopy. It has been seen that the conformation of YADH in reverse micelles is extremely sensitive to pH, temperature, and water content. A comparison has been made between the catalytic activity of the enzyme and the α-helix content in the conformation and it has been observed that the enzyme is most active at the maximum α-helix content. While the β-sheet content in the conformation of the entrapped enzyme was found to be dependent on the enzyme–micelle interface interaction, the α-helix and random coil conformations are governed by the degree of entrapment and the extent of rigidity provided by the micelle core to the enzyme structure.  相似文献

Binary mixed monolayers of octadecanoic acid and three related amphiphilic compounds (octadecanamide, octadecylamine, octadecylurea) have been investigated at the air/water interface by surface pressure–area (Π–Â) isotherms and their resistances to water evaporation (r). In addition, the excess free energies of mixing (ΔGE) were calculated using the Goodrich method. Both the ln r vs x and ΔGE vs x plots exhibit marked deviations from linearity, indicating a high degree of miscibility and nonideal behavior of the components in the mixed films. For all of these binary systems the excess free energies of mixing have been found to be minimum for a certain composition corresponding almost to a maximum in evaporation resistances. Weak interactions were detected in octadecanoic acid/octadecanamide monolayers, whereas significant condensation effects were observed in 1 : 1 mixed films containing octadecanoic acid and octadecylamine. This is attributed to an acid–base equilibrium followed by the formation of a well-ordered arrangement of COO and NH3+ head groups bound to each other by electrostatic forces. The unusual polymorphism of octadecylurea monolayers could be influenced by adding small amounts of octadecanoic acid. The formation of the low-temperature phase (β-phase) is completely suppressed, if the acid content exceeds 8 mol%. The octadecanoic acid seems to induce the formation of the high-temperature phase (α-phase), which is characterized by a vertical orientation of the hydrocarbon chains.  相似文献

The system tetraethoxysilane(TEOS)–water–ethanol has been studied by rheological measurements. Different molar ratios of TEOS : water (1 : 4, 1 : 10, and 1 : 20) are studied at different temperatures (30, 40, and 50°C). The dynamic viscosity (rotating mode) at a constant shear rate (100 s−1) and the elastic and viscous moduli (oscillating mode) at a constant frequency (1 Hz) are determined. The viscosity–time curves are evaluated by application of a nucleation and particle growth model. Good agreement between experiments and theory is observed. The model allows the determination of the complex rate constant of silica precipitation. The temperature-dependent measurements gave the possibility to determine the apparent energy of activation by common methods. The results are in agreement with data from the literature. The gel time defined as intersection point of elastic and plastic moduli and its dependence on temperature are evaluated by the Smoluchowski model. The energy of activation for the coagulation was determined and found to be in the correct order of magnitude.  相似文献

In the commercial bitumen extraction operation, dynamic and static interaction forces between bitumen drops in water determine the likelihood of desirable bitumen coalescence at different process stages. These dynamic and static forces were measured using colloidal particle scattering and hydrodynamic force balance techniques, respectively. In the former technique, dynamic interactions are studied through droplet-droplet collision trajectory measurement. In the latter technique, the static attractive forces between droplets are determined when a doublet is separated with a known and adjustable hydrodynamic force. The dynamic force measurement implies the presence of rigid chains on bitumen surfaces. The mean chain lengths for deasphalted bitumen at pH 7, whole bitumen at pH 7, and whole bitumen at pH 8.5 are 50, 78, and 41 nm, respectively. However, the static force measurement indicates much shorter mean chain lengths (<9 nm) in these three bitumen systems. Shorter chain length indicates weaker repulsive force. This finding of a much weaker repulsion between bitumen droplets under static conditions has important implications on the commercial bitumen extraction operation.  相似文献

A triple hydrophilic block copolymer comprised of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate), and poly(methacrylic acid) (PEO–PAMPS–PMAA) does not form a micelle by itself when it is dissolved in water. However, in the previous paper, we fabricated the nanoaggregates of PEO–PAMPS–PMAA and cationic surfactant, such as cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), by insolubilizing the anionic PAMPS and/or PMAA blocks of the polymer with CTAC only at high pH. In this paper, we fabricated the nanoaggregates of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) and PEO–PAMPS–PMAA in a wide range of pH to examine the effect of ionization of the PMAA blocks of the polymer on the aggregates formation of PEO–PAMPS–PMAA. The properties of the nanoaggregates are affected by the ionization of PMAA block of the polymer. DTAC (C12 alkyl chain) was employed instead of CTAC (C16 alkyl chain) to reveal the effect of alkyl chain length of surfactant on the aggregate formation of PEO–PAMPS–PMAA. The properties of PEO–PAMPS–PMAA nanoaggregates also depend on the structure of surfactant. The binding of DTAC to PEO–PAMPS–PMAA was monitored by electrophoresis measurements, while the formation of DTAC/PEO–PAMPS–PMAA nanoaggregates was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy.  相似文献

To understand the binding nature of organoselenium compounds on gold, we have examined the adsorption behavior of several representative organoselenium compounds, i.e., benzeneselenol (BSe), diphenyl diselenide, dibenzyl diselenide, dioctyl diselenide, and benzyl phenyl selenide (BPSe) on the Au surface by virtue of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). BSe chemisorbs on gold as selenolate with a tilted orientation. Upon adsorption, the Se–Se bonds of diselenides are cleaved to form selenolates, analogous to the formation of thiolate monolayers from disulfides. BPSe adsorbs on gold without any C–Se bond scission. The benzyl moiety of BPSe assumes a rather vertical stance while the phenyl moiety is more tilted to the gold surface.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis foot protein 1 (Mefp-1) is the most well-characterized component of this sea mussel's adhesive plaque. The plaque is a condensed, heterogeneous mixture consisting of a large proportion of cross-linked biopolymers that bonds the mussel to a chosen mooring. Mefp-1 is densely populated with lysine and -3,4-dihyroxyphenylalanine ( -dopa) residues incorporated into a repeating amino acid sequence motif. It has been proposed that one plaque cross-linking reaction is the nucleophilic addition of the ε-amino groups of the lysine residues into the oxidized catechol (o-diphenol) functionality (quinone) of the -dopa residues. In order to determine if this reaction occurs in adlayers of Mefp-1, a previously developed assay for ε-amino groups was applied. Adlayers of Mefp-1 were exposed to an oxidant, either the enzyme, mushroom tyrosinase, or sodium periodate. Binding of alginate to adlayers was used to probe for accessibility of ε-amino groups. It was found that lysine residues lose the ability to bind alginate after exposure to sodium periodate, but that this loss is not clearly due to a reaction with -dopa residues. There is a slight decrease of binding of alginate to adlayers of Mefp-1 exposed to either active or thermally deactivated mushroom tyrosinase, probably due to the obstruction of binding sites by bound enzyme. Adsorption kinetics of mushroom tyrosinase onto adlayers of Mefp-1 for active and thermally inactivated enzyme were nearly identical. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize these interactions at a germanium (Ge) interface.  相似文献

The sorption and diffusion processes of anionic surfactants with different chain length through polyacrylamide hydrogels with low swelling degree have been studied by electrical conductivity measurements. The multicomponent equilibrium equation has been used to model the sorption isotherms of different anionic surfactant in the hydrogels. Such isotherms show that initial rapid sorption of unimer surfactant into the membranes occurs, suggesting that non-freezing water can be involved in these interactions. In aqueous solution, at concentrations near and above the critical micelle concentration an anti-co-operative region is found. The diffusion coefficients of the anionic surfactants inside the hydrogel matrix show that the mobility of diffusing surfactant entities is dependent on cross-linker concentration and chain length. The Cukier hydrodynamic model and the free volume theory as modified by Peppas and Reinhart were applied to explain the dependence of the diffusion coefficients of surfactant on surfactant concentration inside the hydrogel. The hydrodynamic model was applied with success to the more hydrophilic surfactant, sodium 1-octanesulfonate, showing that the diffusion coefficients, D, increase when the resistance to hydrodynamic medium decreases; when the surfactant chain length increases (sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium 1-hexadecane sulphonate) the variation of D with the free volume can only be understood considering the sieving effect produced by the surfactant inside gel.  相似文献

The JKR method has been applied for studying adhesion between poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) caps and Langmuir–Blodgett cellulose surfaces including the substrate, hydrophobized mica, and two flat mineral surfaces, bare mica and glass. The self-adhesion of PDMS caps and oxidized PDMS caps are included as a reference to compare with literature data. The results of the measurements have been compared with previous studies using the surface force apparatus and similar systems. A satisfactory agreement is obtained for simple systems showing no, or very limited, hysteresis between loading and unloading curves. In several cases, however, a large hysteresis is found between loading and unloading curves, with a larger adhesion measured from the pull-off force than from the JKR-curve determined on loading. This is, for instance, the case for PDMS against cellulose. The situation is analogous to that found in wetting studies showing a large hysteresis between advancing and receding contact angles.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of a thermoresponsive amphiphilic diblock copolymer, containing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), in the presence of the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant can undergo a temperature-induced transition from loose intermicellar clusters to collapsed core–shell nanostructures. The polymer–surfactant mixtures have been characterized with the aid of turbidity, small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), intensity light scattering (ILS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), shear viscosity, and rheo-small angle light scattering (rheo-SALS). In the absence of SDS, compressed intermicellar structures are formed at intermediate temperatures, and at higher temperatures further aggregation is detected. The SANS results disclose a structure peak in the scattered intensity profile at the highest measured temperature. This peak is ascribed to the formation of ordered structures (crystallites). In the presence of a low amount of SDS, a strong collapse of the intermicellar clusters is observed at moderate temperatures, and only a slight renewed interpolymer association is found at higher temperatures because of repulsive electrostatic interactions. Finally, at moderate surfactant concentrations, temperature-induced loose intermicellar clusters are detected but no shrinking was registered in the considered temperature range. At a high level of SDS addition, large polymer–surfactant complexes appear at low temperatures, and these species are compressed at elevated temperatures. The rheo-SALS results show that the transition structures are rather fragile under the influence of shear flow.  相似文献

The sign–alternating electric field in rectangular impulses has been used to eliminate linear electrophoresis and to study nonlinear electrophoresis in water at strong fields. We found out that the particle drift velocity could change its direction with the growth of the strength of the field. This new phenomenon has obtained its explanation in the framework of the Debye–Hückel theory of strong electrolyte where we consider a particle as a “heavy” effective ion and take into account all relevant nonlinear effects, grounding ourselves on basic physics. With the help of our theory we have succeeded in good fitting of our experimental data on black oil and Al2O3 particles in distilled water using reasonable values for the basic parameters such as the Debye screening length.  相似文献

Aggregation behavior in aqueous solution of a series of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG)-based macromonomers with methacryloyl group as the only hydrophobic segment has been investigated using surface tension, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy using pyrene as a probe, and small-angle neutron scattering techniques. The general formula of these macromonomers is CH2=C(CH3)–CO–O–Em–CH3, where E is the ethylene glycol unit and m=8 (ME8), 18 (ME18), 49 (ME49), and 120 (ME120). The results indicate that a macromonomer with 8 ethylene glycol units forms as an aggregate above a certain critical concentration, which can be defined as critical aggregation concentration. The observed high value of I1/I3 in pyrene emission spectra at the interface of these aggregates and the inability to scatter a neutron beam by these aggregates indicate that the hydrophobic cluster formed by this macromonomer is remarkably solvated. ME18 has a tendency to aggregate but others do not form any hydrophobic cluster. The homopolymerization behaviors of these macromonomers in an aqueous medium at 70°C are consistent with these possibi- lities.  相似文献
