Push–pull molecules represent a unique and fascinating class of organic π‐conjugated materials. Herein, we provide a summary of their recent extraordinary design inspired by letters of the alphabet, especially focusing on H‐, L‐, T‐, V‐, X‐, and Y‐shaped molecules. Representative structures from each class were presented and their fundamental properties and prospective applications were discussed. In particular, emphasis is given to molecules recently prepared in our laboratory with T‐, X‐, and Y‐shaped arrangements based on indan‐1,3‐dione, benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, imidazole, and triphenylamine. These push–pull molecules turned out to be very efficient charge‐transfer chromophores with tunable properties suitable for second‐order nonlinear optics, two‐photon absorption, reversible pH‐induced and photochromic switching, photocatalysis, and intercalation.

Symmetric‐ and asymmetric hexaarylbenzenes (HABs), each substituted with three electron‐donor triarylamine redox centers and three electron‐acceptor triarylborane redox centers, were synthesized by cobalt‐catalyzed cyclotrimerization, thereby forming compounds with six‐ and four donor–acceptor interactions, respectively. The electrochemical‐ and photophysical properties of these systems were investigated by cyclovoltammetry (CV), as well as by absorption‐ and fluorescence spectroscopy, and compared to a HAB that only contained one neighboring donor–acceptor pair. CV measurements of the asymmetric HAB show three oxidation peaks and three reduction peaks, whose peak‐separation is greatly influenced by the conducting salt, owing to ion‐pairing and shielding effects. Consequently, the peak‐separations cannot be interpreted in terms of the electronic couplings in the generated mixed‐valence species. Transient‐absorption spectra, fluorescence‐solvatochromism, and absorption spectra show that charge‐transfer states from the amine‐ to the boron centers are generated after optical excitation. The electronic donor–acceptor interactions are weak because the charge transfer has to occur predominantly through space. Moreover, the excitation energy of the localized excited charge‐transfer states can be redistributed between the aryl substituents of these multidimensional chromophores within the fluorescence lifetime (about 60 ns). This result was confirmed by steady‐state fluorescence‐anisotropy measurements, which further indicated symmetry‐breaking in the superficially symmetric HAB. Adding fluoride ions causes the boron centers to lose their accepting ability owing to complexation. Consequently, the charge‐transfer character in the donor–acceptor chromophores vanishes, as observed in both the absorption‐ and fluorescence spectra. However, the ability of the boron center as a fluoride sensor is strongly influenced by the moisture content of the solvent, possibly owing to the formation of hydrogen‐bonding interactions between water molecules and the fluoride anions.  相似文献

A series of indan‐1,3‐dione‐based linear, quadrupolar and T‐shaped push–pull chromophores have been designed and synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation and Pd‐catalyzed Suzuki–Miyaura or Sonogashira cross‐coupling reactions. The number and position of the peripheral donor branches attached to the central withdrawing indan‐1,3‐dione moiety have been varied jointly with the type of π‐linker used in order to modulate fundamental optoelectronic properties. The molecular structure of two chromophores has been confirmed by X‐ray analysis. The thermal and optoelectronic properties have further been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, electrochemistry, UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. Based on these experimental and theoretical data, thorough structure–property relationships have been further evaluated and influence of the particular structural modification on chromophore properties has been discussed.  相似文献

To shed light on intramolecular charge‐transfer phenomena in 1,2,3‐triazole‐linked materials, a series of 1,2,3‐triazole‐linked push–pull chromophores were prepared and studied experimentally and computationally. Investigated modifications include variation of donor and/or acceptor strength and linker moiety as well as regioisomers. Photophysical characterization of intramolecular charge‐transfer features revealed ambipolar behavior of the triazole linker, depending on the substitution position. Furthermore, non‐centrosymmetric materials were subjected to second‐harmonic generation measurements, which revealed the high nonlinear optical activity of this class of materials.  相似文献

Time‐resolved transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy with nano‐ and femtosecond time resolution were used to investigate the deactivation pathways of the excited states of distyrylfuran, thiophene and pyridine derivatives in several organic solvents of different polarity in detail. The rate constant of the main decay processes (fluorescence, singlet–triplet intersystem crossing, isomerisation and internal conversion) are strongly affected by the nature [locally excited (LE) or charge transfer (CT)] and selective position of the lowest excited singlet states. In particular, the heteroaromatic central ring significantly enhances the intramolecular charge‐transfer process, which is operative even in a non‐polar solvent. Both the thiophene and pyridine moieties enhance the S1→T1 rate with respect to the furan one. This is due to the heavy‐atom effect (thiophene compounds) and to the 1(π,π)*→3(n,π)* transition (pyridine compounds), which enhance the spin‐orbit coupling. Moreover, the solvent polarity also plays a significant role in the photophysical properties of these push–pull compounds: in fact, a particularly fast 1LE*→1CT* process was found for dimethylamino derivatives in the most polar solvents (time constant, τ≤400 fs), while it takes place in tens of picoseconds in non‐polar solvents. It was also shown that the CT character of the lowest excited singlet state decreased by replacing the dimethylamino side group with a methoxy one. The latter causes a decrease in the emissive decay and an enhancement of triplet‐state formation. The photoisomerisation mechanism (singlet/triplet) is also discussed.  相似文献

We designed, synthesized, and evaluated environmentally responsive solvatochromic fluorescent dyes by incorporating weak push–pull moieties. The quantum yields of the push (alkyl)–pull (formyl) pyrene dyes were dramatically enhanced by the introduction of alkyl groups into formylpyrene (1‐formylpyrene: ΦF=0.10; 3,6,8‐tri‐n‐butyl‐1‐formylpyrene: ΦF=0.90; in MeOH). The new dyes exhibited unique sensitivity to solvent polarity and hydrogen‐bond donor ability, and specific fluorescence turn‐on/off properties (e.g., 3,6,8‐tri‐n‐butyl‐1‐formylpyrene: ΦF=0.004, 0.80, 0.37, and 0.90 in hexane, chloroform, DMSO, and MeOH, respectively). Here, the alkyl groups act as weak donors to suppress intersystem crossing by destabilizing the HOMOs of 1‐formylpyrene while maintaining weak intramolecular charge‐transfer properties. By using alkyl groups as weak donors, environmentally responsive, and in particular, pH‐responsive fluorescent materials may be developed in the future.  相似文献

A small series of donor–acceptor molecular dyads has been synthesized and fully characterized. In each case, the acceptor is a dicyanovinyl unit and the donor is a boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dye equipped with a single styryl arm bearing a terminal amino group. In the absence of the acceptor, the BODIPY‐based dyes are strongly fluorescent in the far‐red region and the relaxed excited‐singlet states possess significant charge‐transfer character. As such, the emission maxima depend on both the solvent polarity and temperature. With the corresponding push–pull molecules, there is a low‐energy charge‐transfer state that can be observed by both absorption and emission spectroscopy. Here, charge‐recombination fluorescence is weak and decays over a few hundred picoseconds or so to recover the ground state. Overall, these results permit evaluation of the factors affecting the probability of charge‐recombination fluorescence in push–pull dyes. The photophysical studies are supported by cyclic voltammetry and DFT calculations.  相似文献

Nonempirically tuned hybrid density functionals with range‐separated exchange are applied to calculations of the first hyperpolarizability (β) and charge‐transfer (CT) excitations of linear “push–pull” donor–acceptor‐substituted organic molecules with extended π‐conjugated bridges. An unphysical delocalization with increasing chain length in density functional calculations can be reduced significantly by enforcing an asymptotically correct exchange‐correlation potential adjusted to give frontier orbital energies representing ionization potentials. The delocalization error for a number of donor–acceptor systems is quantified by calculations with fractional electron numbers and from orbital localizations. Optimally tuned hybrid variants of the PBE functional incorporating range‐separated exchange can produce similar magnitudes for β as Møller–Plesset second‐order perturbation (MP2) correlated calculations. Improvements are also found for CT excitation energies, with results similar to an approximate coupled‐cluster model (CC2).  相似文献

Series of homoconjugated push–pull chromophores and donor–acceptor (D–A)‐functionalized spiro compounds were synthesized, in which the electron‐donating strength of the anilino donor groups was systematically varied. The structural and optoelectronic properties of the compounds were investigated by X‐ray analysis, UV/Vis spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and computational analysis. The homoconjugated push–pull chromophores with a central bicyclo[4.2.0]octane scaffold were obtained in high yield by [2+2] cycloaddition of 2,3‐dichloro‐5,6‐dicyano‐p‐benzoquinone (DDQ) to N,N‐dialkylanilino‐ or N,N‐diarylanilino‐substituted activated alkynes. The spirocyclic compounds were formed by thermal rearrangement of the homoconjugated adducts. They also can be prepared in a one‐pot reaction starting from DDQ and anilino‐substituted alkynes. Spiro products with N,N‐diphenylanilino and N,N‐diisopropylanilino groups were isolated in high yields whereas compounds with pyrrolidino, didodecylamino, and dimethylamino substituents gave poor yields, with formation of insoluble side products. It was shown by in situ trapping experiments with TCNE that cycloreversion is possible during the thermal rearrangement, thereby liberating DDQ. In the low‐yielding transformations, DDQ oxidizes the anilino species present, presumably via an intermediate iminium ion pathway. Such a pathway is not available for the N,N‐diphenylanilino derivative and, in the case of the N,N‐diisopropylanilino derivative, would generate a strained iminium ion (A1,3 strain). The mechanism of the thermal rearrangement was investigated by EPR spectroscopy, which provides good evidence for a proposed biradical pathway starting with the homolytic cleavage of the most strained (CN)C?C(CN) bond between the fused four‐ and six‐membered rings in the homoconjugated adducts.  相似文献

Our work surveyed experimental and theoretical investigations to construct highly emissive D –π–A (D=donor, A=acceptor) fluorenes. The synthetic routes were optimised to be concise and gram‐scalable. The molecular design was first rationalised by varying the electron‐withdrawing group from an aldehyde, ketotriazole or succinyl to methylenemalonitrile or benzothiadiazole. The electron‐donating group was next varied from aliphatic or aromatic amines to saturated cyclic amines ranging from aziridine to azepane. Spectroscopic studies correlated with TD‐DFT calculations provided the optimised structures. The selected push–pull dyes exhibited visible absorptions, significant brightness, important solvatofluorochromism, mega‐Stokes shifts (>250 nm) and dramatic shifts in emission to the near‐infrared. The current library includes the comprehensive characterization of 16 prospective dyes for fluorescence applications. Among them, several fluorene derivatives bearing different conjugation anchors were tested for coupling and demonstrated to preserve the photophysical responses once further bound.  相似文献

A set of linear and dissymmetric BODIPY‐bridged push–pull dyes are synthesized. The electron‐donating substituents are anisole and dialkylanilino groups. The strongly electron‐accepting moiety, a 1,1,4,4‐tetracyanobuta‐1,3‐diene (TCBD) group, is obtained by insertion of an electron‐rich ethyne into tetracyanoethylene. A nonlinear push–pull system is developed with a donor at the 5‐position of the BODIPY core and the acceptor at the 2‐position. All dyes are fully characterized and their electrochemical, linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed. The linear optical properties of dialkylamino compounds show strong solvatochromic behavior and undergo drastic changes upon protonation. The strong push–pull systems are non‐fluorescent and the TCBD‐BODIPY dyes show diverse photochemistry and electrochemistry, with several reversible reduction waves for the tetracyanobutadiene moiety. The hyperpolarizability μβ of selected compounds is evaluated using the electric‐field‐induced second‐harmonic generation technique. Two of the TCBD‐BODIPY dyes show particularly high μβ (1.907 μm) values of 2050×10?48 and 5900×10?48 esu. In addition, one of these dyes shows a high NLO contrast upon protonation–deprotonation of the donor residue.  相似文献

Stille, Suzuki–Miyaura and Negishi cross‐coupling reactions of bromine‐functionalised borylated precursors enable the facile, high yielding, synthesis of borylated donor–acceptor materials that contain electron‐rich aromatic units and/or extended effective conjugation lengths. These materials have large Stokes shifts, low LUMO energies, small band‐gaps and significant fluorescence emission >700 nm in solution and when dispersed in a host polymer.  相似文献

A series of T‐ and H‐shaped donor–acceptor (D–A) types of dipyrido[3,2‐a:2′,3′‐c]phenazine (DPPZ)‐based molecules, extended by thienyl and triphenylamino chromophores at the 2,7‐(bottom) and/or 10,13‐positions (top), have been designed and prepared successfully. Synthetic, structural, thermal, spectral, and computational comparisons have been carried out for related compounds because of their adjustable intramolecular charge‐transfer properties. It is noted that a pair of structural isomers ( 5 and 6 ) has been obtained, respectively, where distinguishable UV/Vis and fluorescence spectra, electrochemical activity, thermal stability, and bandgaps are observed. Furthermore, compounds 6 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 13 , and 15 exhibit excellent thermal stability, and the Td10 values for them are found to range from 524 to 646 °C, which can be regarded as one of the best groups of thermally stable compounds among organic small molecules. In addition, theoretical calculations were performed, and the structure–property relationships were examined to reveal the effects of the position and number of donor arms on the DPPZ acceptor core.  相似文献

A comparative investigation on the photophysical properties and solvation‐related ICT dynamics of three push–pull compounds containing different donors including carbazole, triphenylamine and phenothiazine, was performed. The steady‐state spectra and theoretical calculations show the charge transfers from the central donors to the acceptors at each side. The characterization of the extent of charge transfer was determined by various means, including estimation of the dipole moment, the electron density distribution of HOMO and LUMO, CDD and change in Gibb's free energy, which show the charge transfer strength to be in the order PDHP > BDHT > PDHC. This suggests that the electron‐donating ability of the donor groups plays a crucial role in the charge transfer in these compounds. The TA data show the excited‐state relaxation dynamics follow a sequential model: FC→ICT→ICT′→S0, and are affected by the solvent polarity. The results presented here demonstrate that the compound with a higher degree of ICT characteristic interacts more strongly with stronger polar solvent molecules, which can accelerate the solvation and spectral evolution to lower energy levels. The A–π‐D –π‐A architectures with prominent ICT characteristics based on carbazole, triphenylamine and phenothiazine might be potential scaffolds for light‐harvesting and photovoltaic devices. These results are of value for understanding structure–property relationships and the rational design of functional materials for photoelectric applications.  相似文献

Three symmetrical donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) luminophores ( C1 , C2 , and C3 ) with pyrazine derivatives as electron‐withdrawing groups have been developed for multistimuli‐responsive luminescence switching. For comparison, reference compounds R1 and R2 without the pyrazine moiety have also been synthesized. Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interactions can be found for all D–A–D luminophores owing to the electron‐withdrawing properties of the two imine nitrogen atoms in the pyrazine ring and the electron‐donating properties of the other two amine nitrogen atoms in the two triphenylamine units. Moreover, luminophores C1 , C2 , and C3 exhibit “on–off–on” luminescence switching properties in mixtures of water/tetrahydrofuran with increasing water content, which is different from the “on–off” switching for typical aggregation‐caused quenching (ACQ) materials and “off–on” switching for traditional aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) materials. Additionally, upon grinding the pristine samples, luminophores C1 , C2 , and C3 display bathochromically shifted photoluminescence maxima that can be recovered by either solvent fuming or thermal annealing treatments. The piezofluorochromic (PFC) properties are more pronounced than those for reference compounds R1 and R2 , which indicates that D–A molecules have the ability to amplify the PFC effect by tuning the ICT interactions upon tiny structural changes under pressure. Furthermore, the target luminophores demonstrate acid‐responsive photoluminescence spectra that can be recovered in either basic or ambient environments. These results suggest that D–A complexes are potential candidates for multistimuli‐responsive luminescence switching because their ICT profiles can be facilely tuned with tiny external stimuli.  相似文献

In 2004, we reported single‐pair fluorescence resonance energy transfer (spFRET), based on a perylene diimide (PDI) and terrylene diimide (TDI) dyad ( 1 ) that was bridged by a rigid substituted para‐terphenyl spacer. Since then, several further single‐molecule‐level investigations on this specific compound have been performed. Herein, we focus on the synthesis of this dyad and the different approaches that can be employed. An optimized reaction pathway was chosen, considering the solubilities, reactivities, and accessibilities of the building blocks for each individual reaction whilst still using established synthetic techniques, including imidization, Suzuki coupling, and cyclization reactions. The key differentiating consideration in this approach to the synthesis of dyad 1 is the introduction of functional groups in a nonsymmetrical manner onto either the perylene diimide or the terrylene diimide by using imidization reactions. Combined with well‐defined purification conditions, this modified approach allows dyad 1 to be obtained in reasonable quantities in good yield.  相似文献

Donor–acceptor (D–π–A) systems that combine triarylamine donor blocks and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor groups have been synthesized. Starting from the triphenylamine (TPA)? thiophene? DCV compound ( 1 ) as a reference system, various synthetic approaches have been developed for controlling the light‐harvesting properties and energy levels of the frontier orbitals in this molecule. Thus, the introduction of methoxy groups onto TPA, the replacement of one phenyl ring of TPA by a thiophene ring, or the extension of the π‐conjugating spacer group lead to the modulation of the HOMO level. On the other hand, the fusion of the DCV group onto the vicinal thiophene ring by an ortho‐phenylene bridge allows for a specific fine‐tuning of the LUMO level. The electronic properties of the molecules were analyzed by using UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry and the compounds were evaluated as donor materials in basic bilayer planar heterojunction solar cells by using C60 as acceptor material. The relationships between the electronic properties of the donors and the performance of the corresponding photovoltaic devices are discussed. Bilayer planar heterojunction solar cells that used reference compound 1 and C70 afforded power‐conversion efficiencies of up to 3.7 %.  相似文献
