Low-molecular-weight organic hydrogelators (LMHGs) that can rigidify water into soft materials are desirable in various applications. Herein, we report the excellent hydrogelating properties of a simple synthetic auxin-amino-acid conjugate, naphthalene-1-acetamide of L-phenylalanine (1-NapF, M(w)=333.38?Da), which gelated water even at 0.025?wt?%, thereby making it the most-efficient LMHG known. Optically transparent gels that exhibited negligible scattering in the range 350-900?nm were obtained. A large shift from the theoretical pK(a) value of the gelator was observed. The dependence of the minimum gelator concentration (MGC) and the gel-melting temperatures on the pH value indicated the importance of H-bonding between the carboxylate groups on adjacent phenylalanine molecules in the gelator assembly. FTIR spectroscopy of the xerogels showed a β-sheet-like assembly of the gelator. Variable-temperature (1)H?NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that π stacking of the aromatic residues was also partly involved in the gelator assembly. TEM of the xerogel showed the presence of a dense network of thin, high-aspect-ratio fibrillar assemblies with diameters of about 5?nm and lengths that exceeded a few microns. Rheology studies showed the formation of stable gels. The entrapment of water-soluble dyes afforded extremely fluorescent gels that involved the formation of J-aggregates by the dye within gel. A strong induced-CD band established that the RhoB molecules were interacting closely with the chiral gelator aggregates. H-bonding and electrostatic interactions, rather than intercalation, seemed to be involved in RhoB binding. The addition of chaotropic reagents, as well as increasing the pH value, disassembled the gel and promoted the release of the entrapped dye with zero-order kinetics.  相似文献

Chiral amino acid‐ and amino alcohol‐oxalamides are well‐known as versatile and efficient gelators of various lipophilic and polar organic solvents and water. To further explore the capacity of the amino acid/oxalamide structural fragment as a gelation‐generating motif, the dioxalamide dimethyl esters 16Me and 19Me , and dicarboxylic acid 26OH / 29OH derivatives containing flexible methylene bridges with odd ( 9 ; n=7) and even ( 6 ; n=4) numbers of methylene groups were prepared. Their self‐assembly motifs and gelation properties were studied by using a number of methods (FTIR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, CD, TEM, DSC, XRPD, molecular modeling, MMFF94, and DFT). In contrast to the previously studied chiral bis(amino acid or amino alcohol) oxalamide gelators, in which no chiral morphology was ever observed in the gels, the conformationally more flexible 16Me , 19Me , 26OH , and 29OH provide gelators that are capable of forming diverse aggregates of achiral and chiral morphologies, such as helical fibers, twisted tapes, nanotubules, straight fibers, and tapes, in some cases coexisting in the same gel sample. It is shown that the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)‐determined gelation enthalpies could not be correlated with gelator and solvent clogP values. Spectroscopic results show that intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding between the oxalamide units provides the major and self‐assembly directing intermolecular interaction in the aggregates. Molecular modeling studies reveal that molecular flexibility of gelators due to the presence of the polymethylene bridges gives three conformations ( zz , p1 , and p2 ) close in energy, which could form oxalamide hydrogen‐bonded layers. The aggregates of the p1 and p2 conformations tend to twist due to steric repulsion between neighboring iBu groups at chiral centers. The X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) results of 16Me and 19Me xerogels prove the formation of p1 and p2 gel aggregates, respectively. The latter results explain the formation of gel aggregates with chiral morphology and also the simultaneous presence of aggregates of diverse morphology in the same gel system.  相似文献

The gelation properties of derivatives of N‐alkylated (R)‐12‐hydroxystearic acid hydrazide (n‐HSAH, n=0, 2, 6, 10; n is the length of an n‐alkyl chain on the terminal nitrogen atom) in a wide variety of liquids is reported. The n‐HSAH compounds were derived from a naturally occurring alkanoic acid, (R)‐12‐hydroxystearic acid (R‐12HSA), and although they differ from the analogous N‐alkyl (R)‐12‐hydroxystearamides (n‐HSAA) only by the presence of one N?H group, their behavior as gelators is very different. For example, the parent molecule (0‐HSAH) is a supergelator in ethylene glycol, in which it forms self‐standing gels that are self‐healing, partially thixotropic, moldable, and load‐bearing; gels of 0‐HSAA are not self‐standing. 0‐HSAH is structurally the simplest molecular gelator of which we are aware that is capable of forming both self‐standing and partially thixotropic gels. Also, diffusion of the cationic dye erythrosine B and the anionic dye methylene blue in 0‐HSAH/ethylene glycol gel blocks is much slower than the self‐diffusion of ethylene glycol. Polarizing optical microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and FTIR studies revealed that the self‐assembled fibrillar networks (SAFINs) of the gels are crystalline, and that 0‐HSAH molecules may be arranged in a triclinic subcell with bilayer stacking. The SAFINs are stabilized by strong hydrogen‐bonding interactions between the hydrazide groups of adjacent molecules and a perpendicular hydrogen‐bonding network between the pendent hydroxyl groups of 0‐HSAH. The other n‐HSAH (n=2, 6, 10) molecules appear to be arranged in orthorhombic subcells with monolayers and strong hydrogen‐bonding interactions between the hydrazide group of one gelator molecule and the hydroxyl group of a neighboring one. These results show how small structural modifications of structurally simple gelator molecules can be exploited to form gels with novel properties that can lead potentially to valuable applications, such as in drug delivery.  相似文献

A series of poly(aryl ether) dendrons with a monopyrrolo‐tetrathiafulvalene unit linked through an acyl hydrazone linkage were designed and synthesized as low molecular mass organogelators (LMOGs). Two of the dendrons could gelate the aromatic solvents and some solvent mixtures, but the others could not gel all solvents tested except for n‐pentanol. A subtle change on the molecular structure produces a great influence on the gelation behavior. Note that the dendrons could form the stable gel in the DMSO/water mixture without thermal treatment and could also form the binary gel with fullerene (C60) in toluene. The formed gels undergo a reversible gel–sol phase transition upon exposure to external stimuli, such as temperature and chemical oxidation/reduction. A number of experiments (SEM, FTIR spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, and XRD) revealed that these dendritic molecules self‐assembled into elastically interpenetrating one‐dimensional fibrillar aggregates and maintain rectangular molecular‐packing mode in organogels. The hydrogen bonding, π–π, and donor–acceptor interactions were found to be the main driving forces for formation of the gels. Moreover, the gel system exhibited gel‐induced enhanced emission (GIEE) property in the visible region in spite of the absence of a conventional fluorophore unit and the fluorescence was effectively quenched by introduction of C60.  相似文献

We incorporate various gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) capped with different ligands in two‐dimensional films and three‐dimensional aggregates derived from N‐stearoyl‐L ‐alanine and N‐lauroyl‐L ‐alanine, respectively. The assemblies of N‐stearoyl‐L ‐alanine afforded stable films at the air–water interface. More compact assemblies were formed upon incorporation of AuNPs in the air–water interface of N‐stearoyl‐L ‐alanine. We then examined the effects of incorporation of various AuNPs functionalized with different capping ligands in three‐dimensional assemblies of N‐lauroyl‐L ‐alanine, a compound that formed a gel in hydrocarbons. The profound influence of nanoparticle incorporation into physical gels was evident from evaluation of various microscopic and bulk properties. The interaction of AuNPs with the gelator assembly was found to depend critically on the capping ligands protecting the Au surface of the gold nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed a long‐range directional assembly of certain AuNPs along the gel fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the freeze‐dried gels and nanocomposites indicate that the morphological transformation in the composite microstructures depends significantly on the capping agent of the nanoparticles. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that gel formation from sol occurred at a lower temperature upon incorporation of AuNPs having capping ligands that were able to align and noncovalently interact with the gel fibers. Rheological studies indicate that the gel–nanoparticle composites exhibit significantly greater viscoelasticity compared to the native gel alone when the capping ligands are able to interact through interdigitation into the gelator assembly. Thus, it was possible to define a clear relationship between the materials and the molecular‐level properties by means of manipulation of the information inscribed on the NP surface.  相似文献

Two dumbbell‐shaped organogelators with a p ‐quaterphenylene core were synthesized, and their self‐assembly properties were investigated. These low‐molecular‐weight gelators could form self‐supporting gels in many apolar organic solvents with an H‐type aggregation form through a synergic effect of π–π stacking, intermolecular translation‐related hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. In comparison to the p ‐terphenylene‐cored gelator, the extended π‐conjugated segment improved the gelation efficiency significantly with enhanced gelation rate. Additionally, these p ‐quaterphenylene‐centered gelators exhibited strong fluorescence emission induced by aggregation, which not only provided an in situ method to optically monitor the gelation process, but also endowed these self‐assemblies with substantial applications in sensing explosives.  相似文献

Low‐molecular‐weight compounds based on L ‐lysine with alkylpyridinium or ‐imidazolium groups have been synthesized and studied for their gelation behavior in H2O. Most compounds formed gels below a concentration of 2.5 weight‐%, the pyridinium bromide 2a and the 1‐methyl‐1H‐imidazolium bromide 3 even at 0.1 weight‐%. The minimum gel concentration (MGC) necessary for hydrogelation increased with increasing length of the Lys Nα‐alkanoyl chain, but the gelation ability concomitantly decreased. Electron‐microscopic images demonstrated that these hydrogelators create a three‐dimensional network in H2O by entanglement of self‐assembled nanofibers. A fluorescence study with 8‐anilinonaphthalene‐1‐sulfonic acid (ANS) proved that some hydrophobic aggregates are formed at hydrogelator concentrations below an MGC of less than 50 μM (0.004%). FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, and Fluorescence studies indicated that the driving forces for the self‐assembly into nanofibers are mainly hydrophobic interactions and H‐bonding between amide groups.  相似文献

Many weak gels often undergo spontaneous transformation to form a stronger gel upon aging. Herein, the molecular‐level changes that occur during the transformation of a weak gel into a strong gel are shown by using various time‐dependent techniques. Diol 1 forms a metastable transparent gel (TG) in a mixture of CH2Cl2/hexane and undergoes a fast transition to an opaque gel (OG) accompanied by gradual strengthening of the gel, as evidenced from time‐dependent Tgel and rheology studies. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses suggest that these two gels correspond to two different polymorphs. By using FTIR spectroscopy and powder XRD experiments, it is shown that the TG‐containing kinetic polymorph, with weakly hydrogen‐bonded self‐assembly, spontaneously changes into the OG containing a strongly hydrogen‐bonded stable polymorph and this leads to strengthening of the gel and metamorphosis. Time‐dependent IR studies prove the gradual change in hydrogen‐bonding pattern. This is the first molecular‐level study of polymorphic transitions in gels.  相似文献

A dicationic platinum(II) terpyridyl complex, [(tBu3tpy)Pt(OXD)Pt(tBu3tpy)](PF6)2 (tBu3tpy=4,4′,4“‐tri‐tert‐butyl‐2,2′:6′,2”‐terpyridyl, OXD=2,5‐bis(4‐ethynylphenyl)[1,3,4]oxadiazole) formed phosphorescent organogels in acetonitrile or in a mixture of acetonitrile and alcohol. The structure and properties of these emissive gels were analyzed by polarizing optical and confocal laser scanning microscopy, and by variable‐temperature 1H NMR, UV/Vis, and emission spectroscopy. Dry gels were studied by scanning electron microscopy, powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). SEM images of the dry gel revealed a network of interwoven nanofibers (diameter 12–60 nm, length>5 μm). Intermolecular π–π interactions between the [(tBu3tpy)PtC≡C] moieties could be deduced from the variable 1H NMR spectra. The PXRD and SAXS data showed that the assembly of the gelator could be represented by a rectangular 2D lattice of 68 Å × 14 Å. The ability of the complex to gelate a number of organic solvents is most likely due to intermolecular π–π interactions between the [(tBu3tpy)PtC≡C] moieties.  相似文献

The design, synthesis and self‐assembly of new symmetrical 3,6‐bis(4‐(3,4,5‐tris(dodecyloxy)benzoate)phenyl)‐1,2,4,5‐tetrazine were described. The novel gelator, sym‐tetrazine, was prepared by addition reaction of 4‐cyanophenol with hydrazine monohydrate followed by oxidation reaction to afford the corresponding 3,6‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)‐1,2,4,5‐tetrazine which was then subjected to esterification reaction with 3,4,5‐tris(dodecyloxy)benzoic acid. The chemical structure of the sym‐tetrazine gelator was confirmed by elemental analysis, fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐ and 13C‐NMR) spectral measurements. It was confirmed to exhibit relatively strong gelation ability to produce supramolecular assemblies in several polar alcoholic organic solvents, such as butanol, octanol, and 1,6‐dihydroxyhexane. The π‐π stacking and van der Waals mediated self‐assembly of tetrazine‐based organogelator were studied by scanning electron microscopy images of the xerogel to reveal that the obtained organogel consists of fibrillar aggregates. Investigation of FT‐IR and concentration‐dependent 1H‐NMR spectra confirm that the intermolecular van der Waals interactions and π‐π stacking were the key driving forces for self‐assembly during gelation process of s‐tetrazine molecules.  相似文献

A series of bis‐amides decorated with pyridyl and phenyl moieties derived from L ‐amino acids having an innocent side chain (L ‐alanine and L ‐phenyl alanine) were synthesized as potential low‐molecular‐weight gelators (LMWGs). Both protic and aprotic solvents were found to be gelled by most of the bis‐amides with moderate to excellent gelation efficiency (minimum gelator concentration=0.32–4.0 wt. % and gel–sol dissociation temperature Tgel=52–110 °C). The gels were characterized by rheology, DSC, SEM, TEM, and temperature‐variable 1H NMR measurements. pH‐dependent gelation studies revealed that the pyridyl moieties took part in gelation. Structure–property correlation was attempted using single‐crystal X‐ray and powder X‐ray diffraction data. Remarkably, one of the bis‐pyridyl bis‐amide gelators, namely 3,3‐Phe (3‐pyridyl bis‐amide of L ‐phenylalanine) displayed outstanding shape‐sustaining, load‐bearing, and self‐healing properties.  相似文献

A new fluorinated version of a cyclic β‐aminoalcohol gelator derived from 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydroisoquinoline is presented. The gelator is able to gel various nonprotic solvents through OH???N hydrogen bonds and additional CH???F interactions due to the introduction of fluorine. A bimolecular lamellar structure is formed in the gel phase, which partly preserves the pattern of molecular organization in the single crystal. The racemate of the chiral gelator shows lower gelation ability than its enantiomer because of a higher tendency to form microcrystals, as shown by X‐ray diffraction analysis. The influence of fluorination on the self‐assembly of the gelator and the properties of the gel was investigated in comparison to the original fluorine‐free gel system. The introduction of fluorine brings two new features. The first is good recognition of o‐xylene by the gelator, which induces an in situ transition from gels of o‐xylene and of an o‐xylene/toluene mixture to identical single crystals with unique tubular architecture. The second is the enhanced stability of the toluene gel towards ions, including quaternary ammonium salts, which enables the preparation of a stable toluene gel in the presence of chloroaurate or chloroplatinate. The gel system can be used as a template for the synthesis of spherical gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 5 to 9 nm and wormlike platinum nanostructures with a diameter of 2 to 3 nm and a length of 5 to 12 nm. This is the first example of a synthesis of platinum nanoparticles in an organogel medium. Therefore, the appropriate introduction of a fluorine atom and corresponding nonbonding interactions into a known gelator to tune the properties and functions of a gel is a simple and effective tactic for design of a gel system with specific targets.  相似文献

Self-healing supramolecular gels of low-molecular-weight (LMW) molecules are smart soft materials; however, the development of self-healing LMW gelator is still a challenging task because of the lack of in-depth studies about self-healing mechanisms of LMW gels and the solvent effect on gel properties. Therefore, herein a different perspective was used to study a family of D-gluconic acetal-based gelators with variable structural fragments in 14 different solvents, and a more detailed understanding of self-assembly and self-healing mechanism of supramolecular gels was attained. Based on the critical gelation concentration, phase transition temperature, and rheological data, A8 bearing an amide group in side chain and two chlorine atoms linked to benzene ring was found to be an outstanding gelator, which could form gels with good self-healing ability in a variety of solvents. Interestingly, A8 gel formed in n-BuOH demonstrates high transparency, good mechanical strength, self-supporting behavior, and great self-healing ability from mechanical damage. Based on the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and theoretical calculation analysis, the self-assembly and self-healing mechanisms of A8 gel were proposed, indicating that a combination of hydrogen bonding and halogen effect was responsible for the efficient self-healing behavior of supramolecular gel. Furthermore, the analysis of solvent parameters indicated that the dispersion force of solvent favored gelators to self-assemble, hydrogen bonding donor ability of solvent mainly affected the formation of one-dimensional assembly, and hydrogen bonding receptor ability and polarity of solvent mainly influenced the supramolecular interactions among assemblies, significantly intervening the self-healing ability of gels. Overall, this study provides a new perspective to the understanding of gelator structure–property correlation in solvents and sheds light for future development of self-healing supramolecular gels.  相似文献

A novel low-molecular-mass gelator containing a redox-active ferrocenyl group, cholesteryl glycinate ferrocenoylamide (CGF), was intentionally designed and prepared. It was demonstrated that the gelator gels 13 out of the 45 solvents tested. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements revealed that the gelator self-assembled into different supramolecular network structures in different gels. Chemical oxidation of the ferrocenyl residue resulted in phase transition of the gel from gel state to solution state. FTIR and (1)H NMR spectroscopy studies revealed that hydrogen bonding between the gelator molecules in the gel was one of the main driving forces for the formation of the gels.  相似文献

Macroscopically oriented stable organic radicals have been obtained by using a liquid–crystalline (LC) gel composed of an l ‐isoleucine‐based low molecular weight gelator containing a 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine 1‐oxyl moiety. The LC gel has allowed magnetic measurements of the oriented organic radical. The gelator has formed fibrous aggregates in liquid crystals via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The fibrous aggregates of the radical gelator are formed and oriented on cooling by applying a magnetic field to the mixture of liquid crystals and the gelator. Superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements have revealed that both oriented and nonoriented fibrous aggregates exhibited antiferromagnetic interactions, in which super‐exchange interaction constant J is estimated as ?0.89 cm?1.  相似文献

The synthesis, self‐assembly, and gelation ability of a series of organogelators based on perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes containing amide groups at imide positions are reported. The synergetic effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding among the amide functionalities and π–π stacking between the PBI units directs the formation of the self‐assembled structure in solution, which beyond a certain concentration results in gelation. Effects of different peripheral alkyl substituents on the self‐assembly were studied by solvent‐ and temperature‐dependent UV‐visible and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. PBI derivatives containing linear alkyl side chains in the periphery formed H‐type π stacks and red gels, whereas by introducing branched alkyl chains the formation of J‐type π stacks and green gels could be achieved. Sterically demanding substituents, in particular, the 2‐ethylhexyl group completely suppressed the π stacking. Coaggregation studies with H‐ and J‐aggregating chromophores revealed the formation of solely H‐type π stacks containing both precursor molecules at a lower mole fraction of J‐aggregating chromophore. Beyond a critical composition of the two chromophores, mixed H‐aggregate and J‐aggregate were formed simultaneously, which points to a self‐sorting process. The versatility of the gelators is strongly dependent on the length and nature of the peripheral alkyl substituents. CD spectroscopic studies revealed a preferential helicity of the aggregates of PBI building blocks bearing chiral side chains. Even for achiral PBI derivatives, the utilization of chiral solvents such as (R)‐ or (S)‐limonene was effective in preferential population of one‐handed helical fibers. AFM studies revealed the formation of helical fibers from all the present PBI gelators, irrespective of the presence of chiral or achiral side chains. Furthermore, vortex flow was found to be effective in macroscopic orientation of the aggregates as evidenced from the origin of CD signals from aggregates of achiral PBI molecules.  相似文献

In this paper, four gelators (defined as G1 – G4 ) were prepared from 3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid (BPTA) and para‐hydroxylpyridine or meta‐hydroxylpyridine at molar ratios 1:2 and 1:4 respectively, and characterized by 1H NMR, IR, UV‐Vis spectra and elemental analysis. Due to the amphiphilic features, all the gelators were able to gel water via cooling their aqueous solution under different stimulations. The structure of the assembling fibers and the macroscopic properties of the gels were investigated by multiple techniques. The results indicated that the minimum gelator concentration (MGC) increased by the order of G1 , G2 , G3 and G4 , while the gel‐to‐sol dissociation temperature (Tgel) decreased by the same order, which were explained from the assembling structures of the gels.  相似文献

Fluorescein‐, benzothiazole‐, quinoline‐, stilbene‐, and carbazole‐containing fluorescent gelators have been synthesized by connecting gelation‐driving segments, including l ‐isoleucine, l ‐valine, l ‐phenylalanine, l ‐leucine residue, cyclo(l ‐asparaginyl‐l ‐phenylalanyl), and trans‐(1R,2R)‐diaminocyclohexane. The emission behaviors of the gelators were investigated, and their gelation abilities studied against 15 solvents. The minimum gel concentration, variable‐temperature spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy (FM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to characterize gelation. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the N?H and C=O of amide, van der Waals interactions and π–π stacking play important roles in gelation. The colors of emission are related to the fluorescence structures of gelators. Fibrous aggregates characterized by the color of their emission were observed by FM. 3D images are produced by the superposition of images captured by CLSM every 0.1 μm to a settled depth. The 3D images show that the large micrometer‐sized aggregates spread out three dimensionally. FM observations of mixed gelators are studied. In the case of gelation, two structurally related gelators with the same gelation‐driving segment lead to the gelators build up of the same aggregates through similar hydrogen‐bonding patterns. When two gelators with structurally different gelation‐driving segments induce gelation, the gelators build up each aggregate through individual hydrogen‐bonding patterns. A fluorescent reagent that was incorporated into the aggregates of gels through van der Waals interactions was developed. The addition of this fluorescent reagent enables the successful observation of nonfluorescent gelators’ aggregates by FM.  相似文献
