This paper reports a novel combination of hydrophilic/hydrophobic materials for the evolution of liquid manipulation. Droplet generation based on a hydrophilic/hydrophobic mechanism is a promising method for highly accurate liquid manipulations. Although several droplet manipulation devices utilizing hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns have been reported, it has been difficult to split fluid into droplets solely through hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns in a microchannel. In this study, a material combination for fabricating hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns was investigated and their wettability difference was enhanced for droplet generation. To improve hydrophilicity, we attempted to increase the surface area of silicon oxide through pulsed plasma chemical vapor deposition (PPCVD). To improve hydrophobicity, the damage to the hydrophobic patterns in the fabrication process was reduced. We successfully enhanced the difference in contact angles from 54.3° to 86.6° by combining the developed hydrophilic material and hydrophobic material. The developed material combination could successfully split fluid into a quantitative droplet of 14.1 nL in a microfluidic chip. Because the developed hydrophilic/hydrophobic combination enables the formation of a droplet with desirable shape in microchannels, the developed hydrophilic/hydrophobic combination is a promising component for lab-on-a-chip applications.  相似文献

We present a class of gel-based self-propelling particles moving by the Marangoni effect in an oscillatory mode. The particles are made of an ethanol-infused polyacrylamide hydrogel contained in plastic tubing. These gel boats floating on the water surface exhibit periodic propulsion for several hours. The release of ethanol from the hydrogel takes place beneath the liquid surface. The released ethanol rises to the air-water interface by buoyancy and generates a self-sustained cycle of surface tension gradient driven motion. The disruption of the ethanol flux to the surface by the bulk flows around the moving particle results in their pulsating motion. The pulse interval and the distance propelled in a pulse by these gel floaters were measured and approximated by simple expressions based on the rate of ethanol mass-transfer through and out of the hydrogel. This allowed us to design a multitude of particles performing periodic steps in different directions or at different angles of rotation, traveling in complex preprogrammed trajectories on the surface of the liquid. Similar gel-based self-propelling floaters can find applications as mixers and cargo carriers in lab-on-a-chip devices, and in various platforms for sensing and processing at the microscale.  相似文献

Electrowetting-based droplet mixers for microfluidic systems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mixing of analytes and reagents is a critical step in realizing a lab-on-a-chip. However, mixing of liquids is very difficult in continuous flow microfluidics due to laminar flow conditions. An alternative mixing strategy is presented based on the discretization of liquids into droplets and further manipulation of those droplets by electrowetting. The interfacial tensions of the droplets are controlled with the application of voltage. The droplets act as virtual mixing chambers, and mixing occurs by transporting the droplet across an electrode array. We also present an improved method for visualization of mixing where the top and side views of mixing are simultaneously observed. Microliters of liquid droplets are mixed in less than five seconds, which is an order of magnitude improvement in reported mixing times of droplets. Flow reversibility hinders the process of mixing during linear droplet motion. This mixing process is not physically confined and can be dynamically reconfigured to any location on the chip to improve the throughput of the lab-on-a-chip.  相似文献

This paper describes a new microparticle sampler where particles can be efficiently swept from a solid surface and sampled into a liquid medium using moving droplets actuated by the electrowetting principle. We successfully demonstrate that super hydrophilic (2 microm and 7.9 microm diameter glass beads of about 14 degrees contact angle), intermediate hydrophilic (7.5 microm diameter polystyrene beads of about 70 degrees contact angle), and super hydrophobic (7.9 microm diameter Teflon-coated glass beads and 3 microm size PTFE particles of over 110 degrees contact angles) particles on a solid surface are picked up by electrowetting-actuated moving droplets. For the glass beads as well as the polystyrene beads, the sampling efficiencies are over 93%, in particular over 98% for the 7.9 microm glass beads. For the PTFE particles, however, the sampling efficiency is measured at around 70%, relatively lower than that of the glass and polystyrene beads. This is due mainly to the non-uniformity in particle size and the particle hydrophobicity. In this case, the collected particles staying (adsorbing) on the air-to-water interface hinder the droplet from advancing. This particle sampler requires an extremely small amount of liquid volume (about 500 nanoliters) and will thus be highly compatible and easily integrated with lab-on-a-chip systems for follow-up biological/chemical analyses.  相似文献

The electrokinetic focusing and the resultant accelerated electrophoretic motion of polystyrene particles and red blood cells were visualized in microfluidic cross-channels. The experimentally measured width of the focused stream and the measured velocity increase of particles and cells at different voltage ratios follow the proposed analytical formula within the experimental error. The attained velocity increase is insensitive to the particle size, particle property (i.e., particle or cell), and particle trajectory. By solving the electrical potential field in the cross-channel at the experimental conditions, we demonstrate that the squeezed electrical field lines in the channel intersection determine the shape of the focused stream, and the nonuniform distribution of axial electrical field strength underlies the variation of particle/cell electrophoretic velocity through the focusing region. However, the dielectrophoretic force resulting from the nonuniform electrical field in the intersection seems to push the acceleration region of particles and cells slightly in the downstream direction. We have also achieved the single particle/cell dispensing by instantly triggering an electrical pulse perpendicular to the focused particulate flow in a double-cross microchannel. The electrokinetic manipulation of particle/cell in microchannels demonstrated in this work can be used for developing integrated lab-on-a-chip devices for studies of cells.  相似文献

When the dielectrophoresis technology is used to manipulate micron-sized particles, the interaction between particles should not be ignored because of the particle-particle interaction. Especially, when multiple particles (number of particles is above 2) are simultaneously manipulated, the interaction between neighboring particles will affect the results of the manipulation. This research investigates the interaction of particles caused dielectrophoresis effect by the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method based on the hypothesis of the thin layer of the electric double layer at the microscale. The mathematics model can be solved simultaneously by the finite element method for the AC electric field, the flow field around the suspended particles and the particle mechanics at the micrometer scale. In this study, the particle conductivity and the direction of the electric field are investigated, we find that particle conductivity and electric field direction pose an impact on particle movement, and the research reveal the law of microparticle dielectrophoresis movement, which could offer theoretical and technology support to profoundly understand the precise manipulation of particles in microfluidic chips by the dielectrophoresis effect.  相似文献

This review article discusses the use of synthetic catalytic nano motors for cargo manipulations and for developing miniaturized lab-on-chip systems based on autonomous transport. The ability of using chemically-powered artificial nanomotors to capture, transport and release therapeutic payloads or nanostructured biomaterials represents one of the next major prospects for nanomotor development. The increased cargo-towing force of such self-propelled nanomotors, along with their precise motion control within microchannel networks, versatility and facile functionalization, pave the way to new integrated functional lab-on-a-chip powered by active transport and perform a series of tasks. Such use of cargo-towing artificial nanomotors has been inspired by on-chip kinesin molecular shuttles. Functionalized nano/microscale motors can thus be used to pick a selected nano/microscale chemical or biological payload target at the right place, transport and deliver them to a target location in a timely manner. Key challenges for using synthetic nanomachines for driving transport processes along microchannel networks are discussed, including loading and unloading of cargo and precise motion control, along with recent examples of related cargo manipulation processes and guided transport in lab-on-a-chip formats. The exciting research area of cargo-carrying catalytic man-made nanomachines is expected to grow rapidly, to lead to new lab-on-a-chip formats and to provide a wide range of future microchip opportunities.  相似文献

Digital microfluidics involves the manipulation of molecules and materials in discrete packages. This paper reviews our work using amphiphilic magnetic microparticles constructed from porous silicon. An individual porous particle can be used to carry a nanomole or smaller quantities of a reagent, and assemblies of the particles can encapsulate and transport microliter droplets of liquid containing inorganic, organic, or biological molecules. The tracking and identification of each particle can be accomplished with spectral labels that are encoded into the particles during their synthesis. When used to chaperone liquid droplets, the labels can identify the separate droplets prior to mixing and also the combined droplets after mixing. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles encapsulated in the porous matrix allow the manipulation of the particles or whole droplet assemblies with a magnetic field, and they also allow heating of the particle's payload by means of an externally applied RF field. Examples of organic, inorganic, and biomolecular addition reactions, catalytic reactions, and thermolysis reactions are described.  相似文献

Aerosol optical tweezers coupled with Raman spectroscopy can allow the detailed investigation of aerosol dynamics. We describe here measurements of the evolving size, composition, and phase of single aqueous aerosol droplets containing the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate and the inorganic salt sodium chloride. Not only can the evolving wet particle size be probed with nanometer accuracy, but we show that the transition to a metastable microgel particle can be followed, demonstrating that optical tweezers can be used to manipulate both spherical and non-spherical aerosol particles. Further, through the simultaneous manipulation and characterization of two aerosol droplets of different composition in two parallel optical traps, the phase behavior of a surfactant-doped particle and a surfactant-free droplet can be compared directly in situ. We also illustrate that the manipulation of two microgel particles can allow studies of the coagulation and interaction of two solid particles. Finally, we demonstrate that such parallel measurements can permit highly accurate comparative measurements of the evolving wet particle size of a surfactant-doped droplet with a surfactant-free droplet.  相似文献

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is the movement of a particle in a non-uniform electric field due to the interaction of the particle's dipole and spatial gradient of the electric field. DEP is a subtle solution to manipulate particles and cells at microscale due to its favorable scaling for the reduced size of the system. DEP has been utilized for many applications in microfluidic systems. In this review, a detailed analysis of the modeling of DEP-based manipulation of the particles is provided, and the recent applications regarding the particle manipulation in microfluidic systems (mainly the published works between 2007 and 2010) are presented.  相似文献

Selective particle trapping using an oscillating microbubble   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rogers P  Neild A 《Lab on a chip》2011,11(21):3710-3715
The ability to isolate and sort analytes within complex microfluidic volumes is essential to the success of lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. In this study, acoustically-excited oscillating bubbles are used to selectively trap particles, with the selectivity being a function of both particle size and density. The operating principle is based on the interplay between the strong microstreaming-induced drag force and the attractive secondary Bjerknes force. Depending upon the size of the bubble, and thus its resonant frequency, it is possible to cause one force to dominate over the other, resulting in either particle attraction or repulsion. A theoretical analysis reveals the extent of the contribution of each force for a given particle size; in close agreement with experimental findings. Density-based trapping is also demonstrated, highlighting that denser particles experience a larger secondary Bjerknes force resulting in their attraction. This study showcases the excellent applicability and versatility of using oscillating bubbles as a trapping and sorting mechanism within LOC devices.  相似文献

Review of cell and particle trapping in microfluidic systems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The ability to obtain ideal conditions for well-defined chemical microenvironments and controlled temporal chemical and/or thermal variations holds promise of high-resolution cell response studies, cell-cell interactions or e.g. proliferation conditions for stem cells. It is a major motivation for the rapid increase of lab-on-a-chip based cell biology research. In view of this, new chip-integrated technologies are at an increasing rate being presented to the research community as potential tools to offer spatial control and manipulation of cells in microfluidic systems. This is becoming a key area of interest in the emerging lab-on-a-chip based cell biology research field. This review focuses on the different technical approaches presented to enable trapping of particles and cells in microfluidic system.  相似文献

Lab-on-a-chip (LOC) technologies can take advantage of sheath flows for particle/cell focusing before sensing or sorting. The integration of focusing with other microscale manipulation techniques (e.g., sorting) creates a trade-off between the throughput of the device and its performance. Therefore, exploring the effective parameters for cells/particles focusing enables us to improve the desired output of LOC devices. A common configuration for sheath-assisted focusing is Y junctions, which are parametrically studied in this paper. First, a computational model was developed and validated by comparing it with our experimental results. Using COMSOL Multiphysics modeling, the effects of multiple parameters were studied. These parameters include the sheath flow ratio (sheath flow over total flow), width ratio (width of the sheath inlet over the total width), junction angles, and particle size on the focusing width and the distribution of the particles within the focusing region. Then, the numerical data were used to develop two generalized linear models to predict the focusing width of the particles and the standard deviation of the position of the particles. The results showed that the focusing width is greatly impacted by the sheath flow rate ratio. Further, the standard deviation of the position of the particles, which represents the concentration of the particles, is mostly dependent on the flow rate ratio, width ratio, and particle size. Our results provide a better understanding of how the device geometrical and operational factors affect the position of the particles in the development of high-performance on-chip sensing and sorting of both cells and particles.  相似文献

The problem of controlling the droplet motion in multiphase flows on the microscale has gained increasing attention because the droplet-based microfluidic devices provide great potentials for chemical and biological applications. It is critical to understand the relevant physics on droplet hydrodynamics and thus control the generation, motion, splitting, and coalescence of droplets in complex microfluidic networks. Numerical simulations using the volume of fluid algorithm are conducted to investigate the time-dependent dynamics of droplets in gas-liquid multiphase devices. An analytical model based on the electronic-hydraulic analogy is developed to describe the hydrodynamic behavior of the droplets in interconnected microfluidic ladder devices. It is found that the pressure drop caused by the droplets plays a critical role in the droplet synchronization. A fitted formula for pressure drops in the presence of surfactant is achieved by using numerical simulations. Both the numerical and the theoretical results agree well with the corresponding experimental results.  相似文献

The application of optical tweezers (a single-beam gradient force optical trap) to the manipulation and characterisation of aerosol particles is discussed in this tutorial review. Optical tweezers allow not only the indefinite control over a single droplet, but control over arrays of particles. Typical particle sizes span the 1-10 microm diameter range. When coupled with spectroscopic techniques for probing evolving particle size (with nanometre accuracy), composition, phase and mixing state, detailed investigations of the thermodynamic properties of aerosol, the kinetics of particle transformation, and the nature of interparticle forces and coagulation can be undertaken.  相似文献

Droplet morphologies on particles with macroscopic surface roughness   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The equilibrium configuration of liquid droplets on the surface of macroscopically rough solid particles was determined by numerical simulations using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method. The fractional surface coverage of the particle as a function of the droplet size, equilibrium contact angle, and the particle surface roughness amplitude and correlation length has been systematically investigated. Droplet size and contact angle were found to generally have a stronger effect on surface coverage than particle surface roughness. Because of droplet coalescence, a relatively large variation in surface coverage was observed for any given total liquid volume, particularly for larger values of the equilibrium contact angle.  相似文献

A high surface area-to-volume ratio in microchannels increases the importance of surface interactions within them. In layered liquids, such as smectic liquid crystals, surface interactions play an important role in the formation of defect textures. We use 8CB liquid crystal, which is in the smectic-A phase at room temperature, as a model layered liquid. PDMS surfaces can be tuned to be hydrophilic or hydrophobic, and due to the nature of liquid crystalline molecules, we show that this results in planar or homeotropic anchoring conditions, respectively. In a confined system, contrary to the bulk, generated defects cannot grow freely. In the present work, we show that the confinement offered by PDMS microchannels along with the capability of creating mixed anchoring conditions within them results in the formation of particular ordered defect textures through increased surface interactions in smectic-A liquid crystals. Our observations imply that microscale confinement is useful for controlling the size, size distribution, and packing structure of microscale defect structures within these materials. In addition, we show that by placing a droplet of smectic-A liquid crystal on a PDMS surface containing microscale parallel cracks, ordered focal conic defects form between two adjacent cracks. The distance between two adjacent cracks dictates the size of the defects. These observations could lead to useful ideas for exploring new technologies for flexible optical devices or displays that utilize smectic-A liquid crystals.  相似文献

Fast evaporation of spreading droplets of colloidal suspensions   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
When a coffee droplet dries on a countertop, a dark ring of coffee solute is left behind, a phenomenon often referred to as the coffee-ring effect. A closely related yet less-well-explored phenomenon is the formation of a layer of particles, or skin, at the surface of the droplet during drying. In this work, we explore the behavior of a mathematical model that can qualitatively describe both phenomena. We consider a thin axisymmetric droplet of a colloidal suspension on a horizontal substrate undergoing spreading and evaporation. In contrast to prior work, precursor films (rather than pinned contact lines) are present at the droplet edge, and evaporation is assumed to be limited by how quickly molecules can transfer out of the liquid phase (rather than by how quickly they can diffuse through the gas phase). The lubrication approximation is applied to simplify the mass and momentum conservation equations, and the colloidal particles are allowed to influence the droplet rheology through their effect on the viscosity. By describing the transport of the colloidal particles with the full convection-diffusion equation, we are able to capture depthwise gradients in particle concentration and thus describe skin formation, a feature neglected in prior models of droplet evaporation. The highly coupled model equations are solved for a range of problem parameters using a finite-difference scheme based on a moving overset grid. The presence of evaporation and a large particle Peclet number leads to the accumulation of particles at the liquid-air interface. Whereas capillarity creates a flow that drives particles to the droplet edge to produce a coffee ring, Marangoni flows can compete with this and promote skin formation. Increases in viscosity due to particle concentration slow down droplet dynamics and can lead to a reduction in the spreading rate.  相似文献
