Indoor radon concentration level was measured in twelve selected phosphate fertilizer warehouses in Nigeria in order to establish potential hazards to persons using such warehouses as offices. The fertilizer warehouses were selected based on the brand of fertilizers stored, size, ventilation pattern and the number of workers in the warehouses during working hours. Electret Ion Chamber Technology (EIC) with the trade name E-PERMTM was employed for the measurement of radon concentration in the warehouses. Average radon concentration in the warehouses range between 33.6 Bq m−3 and 117 Bq m−3with an arithmetic mean of 91.62±5.9 Bq m−3.  相似文献

The paper will present a method based on the accumulation chamber technique for measuring of radon exhalation from the medium surface. A radon monitor traces the change of radon concentration in the accumulation chamber, and then the radon exhalation can be obtained accurately through linear fit. Based on our recent experiments, the radon exhalation rate from the medium surface obtained from this method is in good agreement with the actual exhalation rate of our simulation facility. This method is superior to the competition method which obtains the radon exhalation through the exponential fit by an external PC-system. The calculation for the exponential fit is very easy by computer and related software. However, for portable instruments, the single chip microcomputer can’t calculate the exponential fit rapidly. Thus, this method is usable for developing the new portable instrument to classify building materials, etc.  相似文献

Radon in groundwater and their annual effective dose in the Ashanti region of Ghana have been determined using the continuous grab sampling technique and an AB-5 detector. Mean levels of radon were in the range of 0.51–46.16 Bq L?1. Effective annual doses ranged from 0.18–16.16, 0.13–12.08 and 0.09–8.31 μSv y?1 for infants, children and adults, respectively. These values are significantly lower than the reference level of 0.1 mSv y?1 recommended by the WHO and United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation for members of the public.  相似文献

In order to carry out indoor radon measurement in new and old buildings of the Dera Ismail Khan city, CR-39 based radon detectors were installed in bed rooms and sitting rooms/TV lounges in 25 (each) old and new houses and were exposed to indoor radon for 90 days. After processing, mean weighted average indoor radon concentrations in old and new houses were found to be 275 ± 33 and 86 ± 18 Bq m?3 whereas mean annual effective doses expected to be received by the occupants were 6.86 ± 0.79 and 2.1 ± 0.43 mSv year?1, respectively. From the measured weighted average indoor radon concentration, excess relative risk factor was calculated using the risk model of BEIR VI for the age group of 35 and 55 years. Average excess lung cancer risk was found to be 1.63 ± 0.19 and 1.35 ± 0.16 and 0.5 ± 0.10 and 0.4 ± 0.08 for old and new houses, respectively.  相似文献

The radioactive gas radon, intermediate term of the decay series of uranium and thorium, is the main contamination source of underground places and may be a risk for high concentration and long exposure time. European and Italian law requires radon concentration to be measured in workplaces and, if the "action level" of 500 Bq/m3 is reached, proper actions must be made in order to decrease the dose commitment. Considering natural showcaves or artificial cavities open to public, the exposition of the visitors is frequently small, due to the short residence time, but accompanying people, remaining underground for long time, may be subject to appreciable dose and the radon concentration should therefore be monitored. The high humidity in natural caves may impair the use of some measuring devices. Therefore, different detection methods were compared (ZnS scintillation counters, E-PERM electret ionisation chambers, cellulose nitrate alpha-track dosimeters) to select the best procedure for long-term investigation. The LR-115 (Kodak) alpha-track dosimeters were insensitive to humidity and permitted to monitor a great number of places at the same time. Measurements have been carried out in the speleological and archaeological site of the Toirano's Caves (Savona, Liguria, Italy) and several points were monitored for two years. Radon concentration strongly depends on the site and changes during the year, due to the difference between internal and external temperature. The maximum dose commitment during the visitors tour, considering the average yearly value of radon concentration, was found to be between 1.5 and 4 microSv. It was found that no risk exists for visitors, but the evaluation of the dose absorbed by the guides and their classification according to the radiation protection law requires a complete monitoring of the average yearly concentration of radon and of the total time spent by each worker into the cave.  相似文献

Soil samples were collected from different localities of districts Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi and Attock, Punjab Province, Pakistan with an aim to measure naturally occurring radionuclides, namely 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and fallout 137Cs radionuclide using a P-type coaxial high purity germanium (HPGe) γ-ray spectrometer. Measured specific activities of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in these soil samples ranged from 26.02 ± 7.11 to 93.54 ± 8.13 Bq kg−1, 29.34 ± 2.58 to 114.41 ± 2.80 Bq kg−1 and 348.15 ± 3.20 to 752.98 ± 4.20 Bq kg−1, respectively. Activity due to 137Cs was observed in some locations which ranged from 0.4 ± 0.2 to 7.8 ± 0.3 Bq kg−1. From the measured activity concentrations, radium equivalent activity concentrations were determined followed by calculations of mean absorbed dose rate and mean annual effective dose for the inhabitants of the studied area. The mean radium equivalent activity, internal and external hazard indices values came out to be 179.26 ± 11.93 Bq kg−1, 0.64 ± 0.05 and 0.48 ± 0.03, respectively. Indoors and outdoor average annual effective dose values were found to be 0.42 ± 0.03 and 0.10 ± 0.01 mSv, respectively. Present data have been compared with the published data for other parts of the world and found to be safe for public and environment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to estimate the concentrations of radon and heavy metals in drinking water and assess their health implications to the population of Quetta, Pakistan. The concentration of radon and heavy metals was measured in drinking water collected from tube wells of different depths of the Quetta, Balochistan, Pakistan, using RAD7 detector and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, respectively. The results show that the concentration of radon ranged from 3.56 ± 0.98 to 8.56 ± 1.32Bq/L with an average of 5.67 ± 1.34Bq/L. The average value of contribution of radon in water to indoor air was found 2.02 ± 0.47mBq/L. In addition to concentration of radon in drinking water, physiochemical parameters like pH and electrical conductivity (EC), and annual effective doses for different age groups were also estimated. Positive correlation of (R2 = 0.8471) was observed between depth of well and concentration of radon, however no such relations were found among pH and EC with concentration of radon. Average values of annual effective doses due to intake of radon for age groups 0–1 years (infants), 2–16 years (Children) and ≥17 years (adults) were found (3.00 ± 0.71)×10?2, (1.1 ± 0.26)×10?2 and (1.45 ± 0.34)×10?2 mSv/y, respectively. Average values of heavy metals concentrations were found 1.85 ± 0.64, 3.21 ± 0.75, 5.06 ± 1.19, and 2.47 ± 0.77 and 5.58 ± 1.23 µg/L for As, Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb, respectively. The values of radon concentration and heavy metals in drinking water were found below the USEPA permissible limits, Thus we conclude that, the investigated waters are safe.  相似文献

Radioactivity levels in soil samples, collected from mid Rechna interfluvial region, Pakistan have been estimated by using gamma ray spectrometric technique. 226Ra, 232Th, the primordial radionuclide 40K and the artificial radionuclide 137Cs have been measured in the soil of the study area. The mean radioactivity levels of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs were found to be 49.0 ± 1.6, 62.4 ± 3.2, 670.6 ± 33.9 and 3.5 ± 0.4 Bq kg−1 respectively. The mean radium equivalent activity (Raeq), outdoor radiation hazard index (H out), indoor radiation hazard index (H in) and terrestrial absorbed dose rate for the area under study were determined as 189.9 ± 8.8 Bq kg−1, 0.51, 0.65 and 70.1 nGy h−1 respectively. The annual effective dose to the public was estimated to be 0.43 mSv. The measured values are comparable with other global radioactivity measurements and are found to be safe for public and environment.  相似文献

Radon can accumulate in underground areas such as show caves. Repairmen and tourist guides working in such caves may thus be exposed to significant radiation doses. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the radon concentration to estimate the exact radiation dose caused by radon. Considering that the radon concentration in caves usually shows significant seasonal fluctuations, the monthly change of radon concentration was studied for 1 year in nine show caves opened to the public in Hungary. Despite the fact that all of the caves were formed in karst rocks, the annual average radon concentration levels were rather different between each other (541–8287 Bq m−3). The significant monthly fluctuation of the radon concentration indicates that the annual average radon concentration in caves can only be accurately obtained by year-long measurements.  相似文献

Measurement of radon is of interest both for the health risk assessment and development of radon therapy in enclosed spaces like as caves, mines and spas. In Romania, radon therapy is not in use, yet. The development of this treatment method in mines from our country involves primarily, the evaluation of radon levels in the salt mines. In this paper, the results of radon gas measurement that were performed at Ocna Dej salt mine (Romania) are presented. The radon measurements were performed using two systems: radon monitor Pylon AB-5 system and CIS-P5M system. The average radon concentration was found to be between 9.14 ± 5.10 Bq/m3 and 31.70 ± 2.76 Bq/m3. These radon levels are lower in comparison to those reported for mines, caves or spas in other countries where radon therapy and speleotherapy is frequently in use. Radon concentration and environmental conditions from Ocna Dej salt mine are suitable for therapeutic applications.  相似文献

Phosphate rock belongs mainly to sedimentary, slightly to igneous, and negligibly to metamorphic rocks. It is used for the production of phosphorous based fertilizers, acids, detergents and many products of common use. The rock is mainly composed of phosphorous and minutely of many other elements. The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn (environmental pollutants i.e. toxic elements), and Co, K, Mg, Mn, Na (common elements) in phosphate rocks used for production of fertilizer in Pakistan. Rock samples of local origin were collected from the geological rock formations around the city of Abbottabad and those of foreign origin were obtained from the fertilizer factories and research institutes in Pakistan. Analysis of phosphate rock for all the elements of interest was carried out with Flame Atomic Absorption spectrometer (FAAS) except for sodium which was analyzed using Flame Photometer, while the concentration of potassium was determined using both the techniques. The results showed that heavy metal content was lower in Pakistani phosphate than that in imported rock and were below the safe limits with the exception of lead whose concentration was found to be higher in local phosphate deposits than that in imported rock samples. Phosphate rock is a source of heavy metal pollution of air, soil, water, food chain etc, therefore requires removal of heavy metals (HMs) from the rock prior to its use.  相似文献

An overview of indoor radon risk reduction in the United States   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Radon in the indoor environment is a recognized environmental hazard. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established several programs to develop, demonstrate, and transfer radon mitigation technology. Administration and management of these programs are shared by EPA's Office of Radiation Programs and Office of Research and Development. One measure of success of these programs is that, by 1990, approximately 90,000 houses have been professionally mitigated in the United States. Future success depends, in part, upon strong motivational campaigns conducted in local communities with regional and national support.  相似文献
