The stable structures, energies, and electronic properties of neutral, cationic, and anionic clusters of Al(n) (n = 2-10) are studied systematically at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d) level. We find that our optimized structures of Al5(+), Al9(+), Al9(-), Al10, Al10(+), and Al10(-) clusters are more stable than the corresponding ones proposed in previous literature reports. For the studied neutral aluminum clusters, our results show that the stability has an odd/even alternation phenomenon. We also find that the Al3, Al7, Al7(+), and Al7(-) structures are more stable than their neighbors according to their binding energies. For Al7(+) with a special stability, the nucleus-independent chemical shifts and resonance energies are calculated to evaluate its aromaticity. In addition, we present results on hardness, ionization potential, and electron detachment energy. On the basis of the stable structures of the neutral Al(n) (n = 2-10) clusters, the Al(n)O (n = 2-10) clusters are further investigated at the B3LYP/6-311G(2d), and the lowest-energy structures are searched. The structures show that oxygen tends to either be absorbed at the surface of the aluminum clusters or be inserted between Al atoms to form an Al(n-1)OAl motif, of which the Al(n-1) part retains the stable structure of pure aluminum clusters.  相似文献

Vanadium oxide clusters, (V2O5)n, have been predicted to possess interesting polyhedral cage structures, which may serve as ideal molecular models for oxide surfaces and catalysts. Here we examine the electronic properties of these oxide clusters via anion photoelectron spectroscopy for (V2O5)n(-) (n = 2-4), as well as for the 4d/5d species, Nb4O10(-) and Ta4O10(-). Well-resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained at 193 and 157 nm and used to compare with density functional calculations. Very high electron affinities and large HOMO-LUMO gaps are observed for all the (V2O5)n clusters. The HOMO-LUMO gaps of (V2O5)n, all exceeding that of the band gap of the bulk oxide, are found to increase with cluster size from n = 2-4. For the M4O10 clusters, we find that the Nb/Ta species yield similar spectra, both possessing lower electron affinities and larger HOMO-LUMO gaps relative to V4O10. The structures of the anionic and neutral clusters are optimized; the calculated electron binding energies and excitation spectra for the global minimum cage structures are in good agreement with the experiment. Evidence is also observed for the predicted trend of electron delocalization versus localization in the (V2O5)n(-) clusters. Further insights are provided pertaining to the potential chemical reactivities of the oxide clusters and properties of the bulk oxides.  相似文献

We report vertical detachment energy (VDE) and IR spectra of Br2.-.(H2O)n clusters (n=1-8) based on first principles electronic structure calculations. Cluster structures and IR spectra are calculated at Becke's half-and-half hybrid exchange-correlation functional (BHHLYP) with a triple split valence basis function, 6-311++G(d,p). VDE for the hydrated clusters is calculated based on second order Moller-Plesset perturbation (MP2) theory with the same set of basis function. On full geometry optimization, it is observed that conformers having interwater hydrogen bonding among solvent water molecules are more stable than the structures having double or single hydrogen bonded structures between the anionic solute, Br2.-, and solvent water molecules. Moreover, a conformer having cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network is predicted to be more stable for each size hydrated cluster. It is also noticed that up to four solvent H2O units can reside around the solute in a cyclic interwater hydrogen bonded network. The excess electron in these hydrated clusters is localized over the solute atoms. Weighted average VDE is calculated for each size (n) cluster based on statistical population of the conformers at 150 K. A linear relationship is obtained for VDE versus (n+3)(-1/3) and bulk VDE of Br2.- aqueous solution is calculated as 10.01 eV at MP2 level of theory. BHHLYP density functional is seen to make a systematic overestimation in VDE values by approximately 0.5 eV compared to MP2 data in all the hydrated clusters. It is observed that hydration increases VDE of bromine dimer anion system by approximately 6.4 eV. Calculated IR spectra show that the formation of Br2.--water clusters induces large shifts from the normal O-H stretching bands of isolated water keeping bending modes rather insensitive. Hydrated clusters, Br2.-.(H2O)n, show characteristic sharp features of O-H stretching bands of water in the small size clusters.  相似文献

The structure and harmonic vibrations of Ga(n)N(n) (n = 3-10) clusters have been investigated using the B3LYP (Becke 3-parameter-Lee-Yang-Parr) density functional theory. All structures are found to be cumulenic D(nh) rings (equal bonds, alternating angles), with one intense out of plane mode and three infrared-active degenerate modes, of which the highest one is extremely intense and asymptotically increases to 1029 cm(-1) for n = 10. Comparisons with C2n, B(n)N(n), and Al(n)N(n) clusters, the structure and bonding type for the Ga(n)N(n) (n=3-10) clusters are consistent with those of the C2n (n = 3, 5, 7, ...) clusters, the B(n)N(n) (n = 3-10), and Al(n)N(n) (n = 3-9) clusters.  相似文献

Geometries and dissociation energies of water molecules on Al(n) (n = 2-25) clusters were investigated using density functional theory with all electron relativistic spin-polarized calculations under the generalized gradient approximation. An extensive structure search was performed to identify the low-energy conformations of Al(n)H(2)O complexes for each size. Optimal adsorption sites were assigned for low-energy isomers of the clusters. Size and site specific dependences were studied for the Al(n)H(2)O complexes in stabilities, geometries, adsorption energies, dissociation energies, Al-O bond lengths, and other characteristic quantities. The stabilities and geometries revealed that H atom in H(2)O is not inclined to bond with Al atoms. The most stable Al(n)H(2)O configurations for each size tend to correspond to the most stable bare Al(n) cluster except of Al(6) and Al(24) clusters. The HO bond lengths increase generally 0.01 ? with respect to the isolated H(2)O in all of the adsorption complexes. The dissociation energy of an isolated H(2)O into HO and H was 5.39 eV, which decreased about two-thirds to the energy range of 0.83-2.12 eV with the help of Al(n) clusters. In spite of the fluctuations, the dissociation energies of Al(n)H(2)O complexes rise with the size increasing as a whole. In addition, we also found that the bare Al(n) clusters with high vertical ionization potentials usually have high dissociation energies of H(2)O in the corresponding adsorption models. The energetically preferred spin-multiplicity of all the odd-n Al(n)H(2)O complexes is doublet, and it is singlet for all the even-n complexes with exception of Al(2)H(2)O which is triplet.  相似文献

We performed an unbiased search for low-energy structures of medium-sized neutral Si n and Ge n clusters ( n = 25-33) using a genetic algorithm (GA) coupled with tight-binding interatomic potentials. Structural candidates obtained from our GA search were further optimized by first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT). Our approach reproduces well the lowest-energy structures of Si n and Ge n clusters of n = 25-29 compared to previous studies, showing the accuracy and reliability of our approach. In the present study, we pay more attention to determine low-lying isomers of Si n and Ge n ( n = 29-33) and study the growth patterns of these clusters. The B3LYP calculations suggest that the growth pattern of Si n ( n = 25-33) clusters undergoes a transition from prolate to cage at n = 31, while this transition appears at n = 26 from the PBE-calculated results. In the size range of 25-33, the corresponding Ge n clusters hold the prolate growth pattern. The relative stabilities and different structural motifs of Si n and Ge n ( n = 25-33) clusters were studied, and the changes of small cluster structures, when acting as building blocks of large clusters, were also discussed.  相似文献

Pyridine containing water clusters, H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), have been studied both experimentally by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer and by quantum chemical calculations. In the experiments, H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n) with m = 1-4 and n = 0-80 are observed. For the cluster distributions observed, there are no magic numbers, neither in the abundance spectra, nor in the evaporation spectra from size selected clusters. Experiments with size-selected clusters H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), with m = 0-3, reacting with D(2)O at a center-of-mass energy of 0.1 eV were also performed. The cross-sections for H/D isotope exchange depend mainly on the number of water molecules in the cluster and not on the number of pyridine molecules. Clusters having only one pyridine molecule undergo D(2)O/H(2)O ligand exchange, while H(+)(pyridine)(m)(H(2)O)(n), with m = 2, 3, exhibit significant H/D scrambling. These results are rationalized by quantum chemical calculations (B3LYP and MP2) for H(+)(pyridine)(1)(H(2)O)(n) and H(+)(pyridine)(2)(H(2)O)(n), with n = 1-6. In clusters containing one pyridine, the water molecules form an interconnected network of hydrogen bonds associated with the pyridinium ion via a single hydrogen bond. For clusters containing two pyridines, the two pyridine molecules are completely separated by the water molecules, with each pyridine being positioned diametrically opposite within the cluster. In agreement with experimental observations, these calculations suggest a "see-saw mechanism" for pendular proton transfer between the two pyridines in H(+)(pyridine)(2)(H(2)O)(n) clusters.  相似文献

The structures, binding energies, and electronic properties of one oxygen atom (O) and two oxygen atoms (2O) adsorption on silicon clusters Si(n) with n ranging from 5 to 10 are studied systematically by ab initio calculations. Twelve stable structures are obtained, two of which are in agreement with those reported in previous literature and the others are new structures that have not been proposed before. Further investigations on the fragmentations of Si(n)O and Si(n)O2 (n = 5-10) clusters indicate that the pathways Si(n)O --> Si(n-1) + SiO and Si(n)O2 --> Si(n-2) + Si2O2 are most favorable from thermodynamic viewpoint. Among the studied silicon oxide clusters, Si8O, Si9O, Si5O2 and Si8O2 correspond to large adsorption energies of silicon clusters with respect to O or 2O, while Si8O, with the smallest dissociation energy, has a tendency to separate into Si7 + SiO. Using the recently developed quasi-atomic minimal-basis-orbital method, we have also calculated the unsaturated valences of the neutral Si(n) clusters. Our calculation results show that the Si atoms which have the largest unsaturated valences are more attractive to O atom. Placing O atom right around the Si atoms with the largest unsaturated valences usually leads to stable structures of the silicon oxide clusters.  相似文献

Bisulfate water clusters, HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n), have been studied both experimentally by a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer and by quantum chemical calculations. For the cluster distributions studied, there are some possible "magic number" peaks, although the increase in abundance compared to their neighbours is small. Experiments with size-selected clusters with n = 0-25, reacting with D(2)O at a center-of-mass energy of 0.1 eV, were performed, and it was observed that the rate of hydrogen/deuterium exchange is lower for the smallest clusters (n < 8) than for the larger (n > 11), with a transition taking place in the range n = 8-11. We propose that the protonic defect of the bisulfate ion remains rather stationary unless the degree of hydration reaches a given level. In addition, it was observed that H/D scrambling becomes close to statistically randomized for the larger clusters. Insight into this size dependency was obtained by B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations for HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n) with n = 0-10. In agreement with experimental observations, these calculations suggest pronounced effectiveness of a 'see-saw mechanism' for pendular proton transfer with increasing HSO(4)(-)(H(2)O)(n) cluster size.  相似文献

Ab initio and density functional methods have been used to examine the structures and energetics of the hydrated clusters of methane sulfonic acid (MSA), CH3SO3H.(H2O)n (n = 1-5). For small clusters with one or two water molecules, the most stable clusters have strong cyclic hydrogen bonds between the proton of OH group in MSA and the water molecules. With three or more water molecules, the proton transfer from MSA to water becomes possible, forming ion-pair structures between CH3SO3- and H3O+ moieties. For MSA.(H2O)3, the energy difference between the most stable ion pair and neutral structures are less than 1 kJ/mol, thus coexistence of neutral and ion-pair isomers are expected. For larger clusters with four and five water molecules, the ion-pair isomers are more stable (>10 kJ/mol) than the neutral ones; thus, proton transfer takes place. The ion-pair clusters can have direct hydrogen bond between CH3SO3- and H3O+ or indirect one through water molecule. For MSA.(H2O)5, the energy difference between ion pairs with direct and indirect hydrogen bonds are less than 1 kJ/mol; namely, the charge separation and acid ionization is energetically possible. The calculated IR spectra of stable isomers of MSA.(H2O)n clusters clearly demonstrate the significant red shift of OH stretching of MSA and hydrogen-bonded OH stretching of water molecules as the size of cluster increases.  相似文献

Following our recent work which revealed that the lowest-energy structures of (ZnO)n (n=9-18) follow cage and tube structural growth patterns with stacks of small subunits of (ZnO)2 and (ZnO)3 [Wang et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 111, 4956 (2007)], we have extended the search for the most stable structures to some larger clusters, i.e., (ZnO)n (n=24, 28, 36, and 48) by using gradient-corrected density-functional theory (DFT). A number of starting configurations belonging to different structural motifs were generated from handmade constructions with chemical intuition and then optimized via DFT calculations. Within the size range studied, cage and tube structures were found to be the most preferred structural motifs for the (ZnO)n clusters.  相似文献

Ab initio simulations and calculations were used to study the structures and stabilities of copper oxide clusters, Cu(n)O(n) (n = 1-8). The lowest energy structures of neutral and charged copper oxide clusters were determined using primarily the B3LYP/LANL2DZ model chemistry. For n ≥ 4, the clusters are nonplanar. Selected electronic properties including atomization energies, ionization energies, electron affinities, and Bader charges were calculated and examined as a function of n.  相似文献

Chromium-doped silicon clusters, CrSi(n) (-)(n = 3-12), were investigated with anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The combination of experimental measurement and theoretical calculations reveals that the onset of endohedral structure in CrSi(n) (-) clusters occurs at n = 10 and the magnetic properties of the CrSi(n) (-) clusters are correlated to their geometric structures. The most stable isomers of CrSi(n) (-) from n = 3 to 9 have exohedral structures with magnetic moments of 3-5μ(B) while those of CrSi(10) (-), CrSi(11) (-), and CrSi(12) (-) have endohedral structures and magnetic moments of 1μ(B.).  相似文献

The vibrational spectroscopy of (SO4(2-)).(H2O)n is studied by theoretical calculations for n=1-5, and the results are compared with experiments for n=3-5. The calculations use both ab initio MP2 and DFT/B3LYP potential energy surfaces. Both harmonic and anharmonic calculations are reported, the latter with the CC-VSCF method. The main findings are the following: (1) With one exception (H2O bending mode), the anharmonicity of the observed transitions, all in the experimental window of 540-1850 cm(-1), is negligible. The computed anharmonic coupling suggests that intramolecular vibrational redistribution does not play any role for the observed linewidths. (2) Comparison with experiment at the harmonic level of computed fundamental frequencies indicates that MP2 is significantly more accurate than DFT/B3LYP for these systems. (3) Strong anharmonic effects are, however, calculated for numerous transitions of these systems, which are outside the present observation window. These include fundamentals as well as combination modes. (4) Combination modes for the n=1 and n=2 clusters are computed. Several relatively strong combination transitions are predicted. These show strong anharmonic effects. (5) An interesting effect of the zero point energy (ZPE) on structure is found for (SO4(2-)).(H2O)(5): The global minimum of the potential energy corresponds to a C(s) structure, but with incorporation of ZPE the lowest energy structure is C2v, in accordance with experiment. (6) No stable structures were found for (OH-).(HSO4-).(H2O)n, for n相似文献

A systematic study on the structure and stability of nitrate anion hydrated clusters, NO3(-) x n H2O (n = 1-8) are carried out by applying first principle electronic structure methods. Several possible initial structures are considered for each size cluster to locate equilibrium geometry by applying a correlated hybrid density functional with 6-311++G(d,p) basis function. Three different types of arrangements, namely, symmetrical double hydrogen bonding, single hydrogen bonding and inter-water hydrogen bonding are obtained in these hydrated clusters. A structure having inter-water hydrogen bonding is more stable compared to other arrangements. Surface structures are predicted to be more stable over interior structures. Up to five solvent H2O molecules can stay around solute NO3(-) anion in structures having an inter-water hydrogen-bonded cyclic network. A linear correlation is obtained for weighted average solvent stabilization energy with the size (n) of the hydrated cluster. Distinctly different shifts of IR bands are observed in these hydrated clusters for different kinds of bonding environments of O-H and N=O stretching modes compared to isolated H2O and NO3(-) anion. Weighted average IR spectra are calculated on the basis of statistical population of individual configurations of each size cluster at 150 K.  相似文献

Structure, energy enthalpy, and IR frequency of hydrated cesium ion clusters, Cs+-(H2O)n (n=1-10), are reported based on all electron calculations. Calculations have been carried out with a hybrid density functional, namely, Becke's three-parameter nonlocal hybrid exchange-correlation functional B3LYP applying cc-PVDZ correlated basis function for H and O atoms and a split valence 3-21G basis function for Cs atom. Geometry optimizations for all the cesium ion-water clusters have been carried out with several possible initial guess structures following Newton-Raphson procedure leading to many conformers close in energy. The calculated values of binding enthalpy obtained from present density functional based all electron calculations are in good agreement with the available measured data. Binding enthalpy profile of the hydrated clusters shows a saturation behavior indicating geometrical shell closing in hydrated structure. Significant shifts of O-H stretching bands with respect to free water molecule in IR spectra of hydrated clusters are observed in all the hydrated clusters.  相似文献

Anharmonic vibrational frequencies and intensities are computed for hydrogen fluoride clusters (HF)n, with n = 3, 4 and mixed clusters of hydrogen fluoride with water (HF)n(H2O)n where n = 1, 2. For the (HF)4(H2O)4 complex, the vibrational spectra are calculated at the harmonic level, and anharmonic effects are estimated. Potential energy surfaces for these systems are obtained at the MP2/TZP level of electronic structure theory. Vibrational states are calculated from the potential surface points using the correlation-corrected vibrational self-consistent field method. The method accounts for the anharmonicities and couplings between all vibrational modes and provides fairly accurate anharmonic vibrational spectra that can be directly compared with experimental results without a need for empirical scaling. For (HF)n, good agreement is found with experimental data. This agreement shows that the M?ller-Plesset (MP2) potential surfaces for these systems are reasonably reliable. The accuracy is best for the stiff intramolecular modes, which indicates the validity of MP2 in describing coupling between intramolecular and intermolecular degrees of freedom. For (HF)n(H2O)n experimental results are unavailable. The computed intramolecular frequencies show a strong dependence on cluster size. Intensity features are predicted for future experiments.  相似文献

We report computational studies on Al(+)(H(2)O)(n), and HAlOH(+)(H(2)O)(n-1), n = 6-14, by the density functional theory based ab initio molecular dynamics method, employing a planewave basis set with pseudopotentials, and also by conventional methods with Gaussian basis sets. The mechanism for the intracluster H(2) elimination reaction is explored. First, a new size-dependent insertion reaction for the transformation of Al(+)(H(2)O)(n), into HAlOH(+)(H(2)O)(n-1) is discovered for n > or = 8. This is because of the presence of a fairly stable six-water-ring structure in Al(+)(H(2)O)(n) with 12 members, including the Al(+). This structure promotes acidic dissociation and, for n > or = 8, leads to the insertion reaction. Gaussian based BPW91 and MP2 calculations with 6-31G* and 6-31G** basis sets confirmed the existence of such structures and located the transition structures for the insertion reaction. The calculated transition barrier is 10.0 kcal/mol for n = 9 and 7.1 kcal/mol for n = 8 at the MP2/6-31G** level, with zero-point energy corrections. Second, the experimentally observed size-dependent H(2) elimination reaction is related to the conformation of HAlOH(+)(H(2)O)(n-1), instead of Al(+)(H(2)O)(n). As n increases from 6 to 14, the structure of the HAlOH(+)(H(2)O)(n-1) cluster changes into a caged structure, with the Al-H bond buried inside, and protons produced in acidic dissociation could then travel through the H(2)O network to the vicinity of the Al-H bond and react with the hydride H to produce H(2). The structural transformation is completed at n = 13, coincident approximately with the onset of the H(2) elimination reaction. From constrained ab initio MD simulations, we estimated the free energy barrier for the H(2) elimination reaction to be 0.7 eV (16 kcal/mol) at n = 13, 1.5 eV (35 kcal/mol) at n = 12, and 4.5 eV (100 kcal/mol) at n = 8. The existence of transition structures for the H(2) elimination has also been verified by ab initio calculations at the MP2/6-31G** level. Finally, the switch-off of the H(2) elimination for n > 24 is explored and attributed to the diffusion of protons through enlarged hydrogen bonded H(2)O networks, which reduces the probability of finding a proton near the Al-H bond.  相似文献

Structures, energetics, and vibrational spectra are investigated for small pure (TiO(2))(n), (SiO(2))(n), and mixed Ti(m)Si(n-m)O(2n) [n = 2-5, m = 1 to (n - 1)] oxide clusters by density functional theory (DFT). The BP86/ATZP level of theory is employed to obtain constitutional isomers of the oxide clusters. In accordance with previous studies, our calculations show three-dimensional compact structures are preferred for pure (TiO(2))(n) with oxo-stabilized higher hexavalent states, and linear chain structures are favored for pure (SiO(2))(n) with tetravalent states. However, the herein theoretically first reported mixed Ti(m)Si(n-m)O(2n) oxide clusters prefer either three-dimensional compact or linear chain structures depending upon the stoichiometry of the compound. Vibrational analysis of the important modes of some highly stable structures is provided. Coupled-cluster single and double excitation (with triples) [CCSD(T)] computed energy gaps for the TiO(2) dimers compare well with results from previous study. Excitation energies are computed by use of time-dependent (TD) DFT and equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations with singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) for the most stable isomers.  相似文献
