The mechanism of polymer oxidation by radiation and thermal ageing was investigated for the life evaluation of cables installed in radiation environments. The antioxidant as a stabilizer was very effective for thermal oxidation with a small content in polymers, but was not effective for radiation oxidation. The ionizing radiation induced the oxidation to result in chain scission even at low temperature, because the free radicals were produced and the antioxidant could not stop the oxidation of radicals with the chain scission. A new mechanism of antioxidant effect for polymer oxidation was proposed. The effect of antioxidant was not the termination of free radicals in polymer chains such as peroxy radicals, but was the depression of initial radical formation in polymer chains by thermal activation. The antioxidant molecule was assumed to delocalize the activated energy in polymer chains by the Boltzmann statics (distribution) to result in decrease in the probability of radical formation at a given temperature. The interaction distance (delocalization volume) by one antioxidant molecule was estimated to be 5–10 nm by the radius of sphere in polymer matrix, though the value would depend on the chemical structure of antioxidant.  相似文献

Thermal and combined thermal and radiation aging of low voltage EPR and XLPE cable insulation with Agerite MA antioxidant and with the ZMTI/Aminox antioxidant system was examined to compare the relative effectiveness of the antioxidant and polymer systems. All provided significant stability with no clear choice of any particular combination being superior to the others. A comparison of degradation from thermal and radiation aging with degradation from combined thermal/radiation aging showed that the damage from the individual aging effects was superposable. This indicates that synergistic effects have little importance for the EPRs and XLPEs tested under the aging conditions observed.  相似文献

Rapid adjustments of the photosynthetic machinery and efficient antioxidant mechanisms to scavenge harmful ROS are physiologic adaptions exhibited by intertidal seaweeds to persist in temperate regions. This study examines short-term (3 h) responses of three large kelps from the cold-temperate coast of Chile, normally adapted to water temperatures <16°C, but exposed abruptly to simultaneous high temperatures and UV radiation during low tide in summer. The kelps were exposed in the laboratory to three temperatures (10, 20 and 28°C) with and without UV radiation, and photochemical reactions, concentration of phlorotannins and antioxidant activity were examined. The exposure to elevated temperature (slightly exacerbated by the presence of UV radiation) decreased photochemical processes (measured as fluorescence kinetics) in the three studied species and increased lipid peroxidation in two of them. The concentration of total soluble phlorotannins was variable and correlated with the antioxidant activity in the presence of UV radiation. Insoluble phlorotannins did not change during the exposure. In all, the downregulation of the photochemical machinery, which was expressed as dynamic photoinhibition, and the rapid induction of soluble phlorotannins triggered by UV radiation minimized the effects of oxidative stress and maintained the operation of photochemical processes during short-term thermal stress.  相似文献

Antioxidant compounds protect plants against oxidative stress caused by environmental conditions. Different light qualities, such as UV‐A radiation and blue light, have shown positive effects on the production of phenols in plants. Kalanchoe pinnata (Lamarck) Persoon (Crassulaceae) is used for treating wounds and inflammations. Some of these beneficial effects are attributed to the antioxidant activity of plant components. We investigated the effects of blue light and UV‐A radiation supplementation on the total phenol content, antioxidant activity and chromatographic profile of aqueous extracts from leaves of K. pinnata. Monoclonal plants were grown under white light, white plus blue light and white plus UV‐A radiation. Supplemental blue light improved the antioxidant activity and changed the phenolic profile of the extracts. Analysis by HPLC of supplemental blue‐light plant extracts revealed a higher proportion of the major flavonoid quercetin 3‐O‐α‐l ‐arabinopyranosyl (1→2) α‐l ‐rhamnopyranoside, as well as the presence of a wide variety of other phenolic substances. These findings may explain the higher antioxidant activity observed for this extract. Blue light is proposed as a supplemental light source in the cultivation of K. pinnata, to improve its antioxidant activity.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the occurrence of oxidative stress in the cladoceran Daphnia longispina exposed to UV-A and UV-B radiation. The activity of antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation markers is investigated and the protective action of ascorbic acid determined. Results show differences in the lethality radioinduced by UV-A and UV-B. Both UV-A and UV-B exposure cause an important increase in malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration and catalase activity. Ascorbic acid addition reduces the MDA concentration, indicating that the oxidative stress caused by either UV-A or UV-B radiation can be controlled by antioxidants. The increase of the antioxidant enzymes may be a response mechanism to oxidative stress.  相似文献

As a normal attribute of aerobic life, structural damage to organic compounds of a wide variety (DNA, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) may occur as a consequence of oxidative reactions. Oxidative damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species has been called “oxidative stress”. Biological systems contain powerful enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant systems, and oxidative stress denotes a shift in the prooxidant/antioxidant balance in favor of the former. Diverse biological processes such as inflammation, carcinogenesis, ageing, radiation damage and photobiological effects appear to involve reactive oxygen species. This field of research provides new perspectives in biochemical pharmacology, toxicology, radiation biochemistry as well as pathophysiology.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare the gamma radiation induced effects on samples of an ethylene-propylene copolymer antioxidant free with samples loaded with an antioxidant characterised by the presence of an -NH functional group. The employed techniques were Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Stable radicals R---NO° due to the interaction of free radicals produced in the irradiated polymer with the antioxidant have been observed by ESR at room temperature. The time evolution of the ESR signals following the irradiation was examined at different doses. The amount of antioxidant not involved in the oxidation reactions has been determined using HPLC.  相似文献

The effects of gamma irradiation (GR) on total phenol, anthocyanin and antioxidant activity were investigated in three different Persian pistachio nuts at doses of 0, 1, 2 and 4 kGy. The antioxidant activity, as determined by FRAP and DPPH methods, revealed a significant increase in the 1–2 kGy dose range. Total phenol content (TPC) revealed a similar pattern or increase in this range. However, when radiation was increased to 4 kGy, TPC in all genotypes decreased. A radiation dose of 1 kGy had no significant effect on anthocyanin content of Kale-Ghouchi (K) and Akbari (A) genotypes, while it significantly increased the anthocyanin content in the Ghazvini (G) genotype. In addition, increasing the radiation to 4 kGy significantly increased the anthocyanin content of K and G genotypes. To conclude, irradiation could increase the phenolic content, anthocyanin and antioxidant activity of pistachio nuts.  相似文献

Infrared A radiation (IRA) from solar sunlight contributes to photoaging of human skin, e.g. by upregulating MMP‐1 expression in dermal fibroblasts, indicating the need for photoprotection of human skin against IRA. Up to now, however, there has been no controlled study to show that effective protection of human skin against IRA radiation is possible. Here, we have conducted a randomized, controlled, double‐blinded prospective study in 30 healthy volunteers to assess the capacity of an SPF 30 sunscreen versus the same sunscreen supplemented with an antioxidant cocktail containing grape seed extract, vitamin E, ubiquinone and vitamin C to protect human skin against IRA radiation‐induced MMP‐1 upregulation. As expected, exposure to IRA radiation significantly upregulated MMP‐1 expression, as compared to unirradiated skin, and this response was significantly reduced, if the SPF30 sunscreen plus the antioxidant cocktail had been applied prior to IRA radiation. In contrast, treatment of human skin with the SPF30 sunscreen alone did not provide significant protection. These results indicate that topically applied antioxidants effectively protect human skin against IRA radiation and that regular sunscreens need to be supplemented with specific antioxidants in order to achieve IRA photoprotection.  相似文献

Doxycycline is a commonly used tetracycline antibiotic showing the broad spectrum of antibacterial action. However, the use of this antibiotic is often connected with the risk of phototoxic reactions that lead to various skin disorders. One of the factors influencing the photosensitivity reactions is the melanin content in melanocytes. In this study, the impact of doxycycline and UVA irradiation on cell viability, melanogenesis and antioxidant defense system in cultured normal human epidermal melanocytes (HEMn‐DP) was examined. The exposure of cells to doxycycline and UVA radiation resulted in concentration‐dependent loss in melanocytes viability and induced melanin biosynthesis. Significant changes were stated in cellular antioxidant enzymes activity: SOD, CAT and GPx, which indicates alterations of antioxidant defense system. The results obtained in vitro may explain the mechanisms of phototoxic reactions that occur in normal human epidermal melanocytes in vivo after exposure of skin to doxycycline and UVA radiation.  相似文献

High energy radiation has been successfully employed to modify the chemical structure of commercial polymers. It induces at least two types of reaction in polyethylene: crosslinking and chain scission. In addition the efficiency of the radio-induced reactions can be affected by the presence of antioxidants. The purpose of this work is to study the effect of the irradiation on a model polyethylene containing a phenolic type antioxidant. Samples containing 0.1% and 1% by weight of Irganox 1010 (Ciba-Geigy) were irradiated under vacuum at room temperature with different doses of gamma rays from a 60Co source. Changes in structure and the average molecular weight were followed by gel permeation chromatography and low angle laser light scattering. The critical doses for gelation were determined as a function of the antioxidant concentration. Theoretical calculations to predict the evolution of molecular structure with extent of radiation were performed using a probability model. The agreement between the calculated and the measured molecular weights is very good.  相似文献

To assess the effects of UV radiation (280–400 nm) on development, oxidative damage and antioxidant defence in larvae of the tropical sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla, a field experiment was conducted at two depths in Aitutaki, Cook Islands (18.85°S, 159.75°E) in May 2008. Compared with field controls (larvae shielded from UV-R but exposed to VIS-radiation), UV-B exposure resulted in developmental abnormality and increases in oxidative damage to proteins (but not lipids) in embryos of T. gratilla held at 1 m depth. Results also indicated that larvae had the capacity to increase the activities of protective antioxidant enzymes when exposed to UV-B. The same trends in oxidative damage and antioxidant defence were observed for embryos held at 4 m, although the differences were smaller and more variable. In contrast to UV-B exposure, larvae exposed to UV-A only showed no significant increases in abnormality or oxidative damage to lipids and proteins compared with field controls. This was true at both experimental depths. Furthermore, exposure to UV-A did not cause a significant increase in the activities of antioxidants. This study indicates that oxidative stress is an important response of tropical sea urchin larvae to exposure to UV radiation.  相似文献

The effect of a medium dose of gamma radiation on antioxidant activity of Amoora rohitaka was studied. Radiation doses were 0, 1, 3 and 5?kGy. Antioxidant activity was screened by using different assay. With increasing dose the formation of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) contributes to the increase in the antioxidant activity. MRPs are formed as a result of Maillard reaction. In ABTS [2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid di-ammonium salt] assay, ethanol extract showed increase in scavenging activity. It also showed a marked increase in polyphenolic contents. The present study reveals that gamma irradiation can be an efficient process to increase antioxidant activity of Amoora rohitaka.  相似文献

Mango (Mangifera indica) is perhaps the most notable sound natural product, however short-lived. A few synthetic compounds like calcium carbide, pesticides, formalin and calcium-based arrangements have been utilizing for its protection, notwithstanding, those synthetic compounds are perilous for our human wellbeing. Besides, mango strip is a food-handling by-product that is discarded since it isn't economically reasonable. For this study, the nutritional, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties of peels from two mango cultivars (Amrapali, and BARI-11) were analyzed with four doses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 kGy) of gamma irradiation. The impacts of radiation on storage quality and life span of usability were likewise investigated. Mango peels were found to have many phytochemicals. Be that as it may, radiation altogether impacted tested parameters like fat, protein, carb, fiber, sugar, energy, soluble solids, etc. in both of the mango peels. On the other hand, the peel samples showed 50% DPPH scavenging activity at varied dosages. Moreover, samples exposed to 1.5 kGy of radiation showed higher antioxidant activity. At a radiation dose of 1.5 kGy, amrapali peel proved to be less hazardous to brine shrimp lethality assay than other samples. The widest inhibitory zones against Pseudomonas sp. were obtained at a dosage of 150 µg/disc. After two weeks of storage, the 1.5 kGy radiation dosage left the mangoes' texture firm, indicating that it was extending the fruit's shelf life by greatly reducing the microbial attack. Thus mangoes could be preserved using radiation without significantly affecting their nutritional value.  相似文献

Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and Ultraviolet B (UV‐B) radiation are among the main environmental factors acting on herbal yield and biosynthesis of bioactive compounds in medicinal plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of biologically effective UV‐B light (280–315 nm) and PAR (400–700 nm) on herbal yield, content and composition, as well as antioxidant capacity of essential oils and polyphenols of lemon catmint (Nepeta cataria L. f. citriodora), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) and sage (Salvia officinalis L.) under controlled greenhouse cultivation. Intensive UV‐B radiation (2.5 kJ m?2 d?1) influenced positively the herbal yield. The essential oil content and composition of studied herbs were mainly affected by PAR and UV‐B radiation. In general, additional low‐dose UV‐B radiation (1 kJ m?2d?1) was most effective for biosynthesis of polyphenols in herbs. Analysis of major polyphenolic compounds provided differences in sensitivity of main polyphenols to PAR and UV‐B radiation. Essential oils and polyphenol‐rich extracts of radiated herbs showed essential differences in antioxidant capacity by the ABTS system. Information from this study can be useful for herbal biomass and secondary metabolite production with superior quality under controlled environment conditions.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop some sunscreen formulations able to maintain their photoprotection when exposed to UV radiation. In this context, the influence of the antioxidant α-tocopherol on the photostability of lipid-based nanoparticles, namely solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), encapsulated with a UVA filter, has been investigated. The nanoparticles co-encapsulated with both actives exhibited dimensions smaller than 200 nm and zeta potentials of –45 mV. The photoprotection of the creams based on lipid nanoparticles was evaluated in terms of two protection factors, SPF and erythemal UVA–PF. By exposing the creams to UV radiation, it was observed that tocopherol results in obtaining quite stable formulations, but it does not improve the overall photoprotection much. However, by adding the antioxidant to the formulation confers a double action: protection of the skin against reactive oxygen species and the photostabilization of the UVA filter into lipid nanoparticles.  相似文献

Laser-induced crosslinking in ethylene-vinyl-acetate and ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer blends was investigated. The degree of crosslinking was estimated by conventional sol-gel measurement. Dependence of crosslinking efficiency on laser parameters, such as the wavelength and the duration of exposure of the radiation, and the temperature of the sample during irradiation was investigated. Also, the effect of incorporation of photoinitiators, antioxidant and pigment into the blend matrices was studied. Photodegradation was found to compete with crosslinking. However, the crosslinking was drastically reduced by the incorporation of antioxidant into the bulk of the blend. In addition to the above measurements, the changes in the tensile properties of the blends are also reported.  相似文献
