By means of a comprehensive theory of elasticity, namely, a nonlocal strain gradient continuum theory, size-dependent nonlinear axial instability characteristics of cylindrical nanoshells made of functionally graded material (FGM) are examined. To take small scale effects into consideration in a more accurate way, a nonlocal stress field parameter and an internal length scale parameter are incorporated simultaneously into an exponential shear deformation shell theory. The variation of material properties associated with FGM nanoshells is supposed along the shell thickness, and it is modeled based on the Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. With a boundary layer theory of shell buckling and a perturbation-based solving process, the nonlocal strain gradient load-deflection and load-shortening stability paths are derived explicitly. It is observed that the strain gradient size effect causes to the increases of both the critical axial buckling load and the width of snap-through phenomenon related to the postbuckling regime, while the nonlocal size dependency leads to the decreases of them. Moreover, the influence of the nonlocal type of small scale effect on the axial instability characteristics of FGM nanoshells is more than that of the strain gradient one.  相似文献

The size-dependent effect on the biaxial and shear nonlinear buckling analysis of an isotropic and orthotropic micro-plate based on the surface stress, the modified couple stress theory(MCST),and the nonlocal elasticity theories using the differential quadrature method(DQM)is presented.Main advantages of the MCST over the classical theory(CT)are the inclusion of the asymmetric couple stress tensor and the consideration of only one material length scale parameter.Based on the nonlinear von K′arm′an assumption, the governing equations of equilibrium for the micro-classical plate considering midplane displacements are derived based on the minimum principle of potential energy.Using the DQM,the biaxial and shear critical buckling loads of the micro-plate for various boundary conditions are obtained.Accuracy of the obtained results is validated by comparing the solutions with those reported in the literature.A parametric study is conducted to show the effects of the aspect ratio, the side-to-thickness ratio,Eringen’s nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter,Young’s modulus of the surface layer, the surface residual stress, the polymer matrix coefficients, and various boundary conditions on the dimensionless uniaxial, biaxial, and shear critical buckling loads. The results indicate that the critical buckling loads are strongly sensitive to Eringen’s nonlocal parameter, the material length scale parameter, and the surface residual stress effects, while the effect of Young’s modulus of the surface layer on the critical buckling load is negligible. Also, considering the size dependent effect causes the increase in the stiffness of the orthotropic micro-plate.The results show that the critical biaxial buckling load increases with an increase in G12/E2and vice versa for E1/E2.It is shown that the nonlinear biaxial buckling ratio decreases as the aspect ratio increases and vice versa for the buckling amplitude.Because of the most lightweight micro-composite materials with high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios,it is anticipated that the results of the present work are useful in experimental characterization of the mechanical properties of micro-composite plates in the aircraft industry and other engineering applications.  相似文献

In this paper, a novel size-dependent functionally graded(FG) cylindrical shell model is developed based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory in conjunction with the Gurtin-Murdoch surface elasticity theory. The new model containing a nonlocal parameter, a material length scale parameter, and several surface elastic constants can capture three typical types of size effects simultaneously, which are the nonlocal stress effect, the strain gradient effect, and the surface energy effects. With the help of Hamilton's principle and first-order shear deformation theory, the non-classical governing equations and related boundary conditions are derived. By using the proposed model, the free vibration problem of FG cylindrical nanoshells with material properties varying continuously through the thickness according to a power-law distribution is analytically solved, and the closed-form solutions for natural frequencies under various boundary conditions are obtained. After verifying the reliability of the proposed model and analytical method by comparing the degenerated results with those available in the literature, the influences of nonlocal parameter, material length scale parameter, power-law index, radius-to-thickness ratio, length-to-radius ratio, and surface effects on the vibration characteristic of functionally graded cylindrical nanoshells are examined in detail.  相似文献

The nonlinear large deflection theory of cylindrical shells is extended to discuss nonlinear buckling and postbuckling behaviors of functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shells which are synchronously subjected to axial compression and lateral loads. In this analysis, the non-linear strain-displacement relations of large deformation and the Ritz energy method are used. The material properties of the shells vary smoothly through the shell thickness according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituent materials. Meanwhile, by taking the temperature-dependent material properties into account, various effects of external thermal environment are also investigated. The non-linear critical condition is found by defining the possible lowest point of external force. Numerical results show various effects of the inhomogeneous parameter, dimensional parameters and external thermal environments on non-linear buckling behaviors of combine-loaded FG cylindrical shells. In addition, the postbuckling equilibrium paths are also plotted for axially loaded pre-pressured FG cylindrical shells and there is an interesting mode jump exhibited.  相似文献

A size-dependent Kirchhoff micro-plate model is developed based on the strain gradient elasticity theory. The model contains three material length scale parameters, which may effectively capture the size effect. The model can also degenerate into the modified couple stress plate model or the classical plate model, if two or all of the material length scale parameters are taken to be zero. The static bending, instability and free vibration problems of a rectangular micro-plate with all edges simple supported are carried out to illustrate the applicability of the present size-dependent model. The results are compared with the reduced models. The present model can predict prominent size-dependent normalized stiffness, buckling load, and natural frequency with the reduction of structural size, especially when the plate thickness is on the same order of the material length scale parameter.  相似文献

The present study proposes a nonclassical Kirchhoff plate model for the axisymmetrically nonlinear bending analysis of circular microplates under uniformly distributed transverse loads. The governing differential equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy based on the modified couple stress theory and von Kármán geometrically nonlinear theory in terms of the deflection and radial membrane force, with only one material length scale parameter to capture the size-dependent behavior. The governing equations are firstly discretized to a set of nonlinear algebraic equations by the orthogonal collocation point method, and then solved numerically by the Newton–Raphson iteration method to obtain the size-dependent solutions for deflections and radial membrane forces. The influences of length scale parameter on the bending behaviors of microplates are discussed in detail for immovable clamped and simply supported edge conditions. The numerical results indicate that the microplates modeled by the modified couple stress theory causes more stiffness than modeled by the classical continuum plate theory, such that for plates with small thickness to material length scale ratio, the difference between the results of these two theories is significantly large, but it becomes decreasing or even diminishing with increasing thickness to length scale ratio.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the buckling behaviors of a micro-scaled bi-directional functionally graded (FG) beam with a rectangular cross-section, which is now widely used in fabricating components of micro-nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) with a wide range of aspect ratios. Based on the modified couple stress theory and the principle of minimum potential energy, the governing equations and boundary conditions for a micro-structure-dependent beam theory are derived. The present beam theory incorporates different kinds of higher-order shear assumptions as well as the two familiar beam theories, namely, the Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. A numerical solution procedure, based on a generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM), is used to calculate the results of the bi-directional FG beams. The effects of the two exponential FG indexes, the higher-order shear deformations, the length scale parameter, the geometric dimensions, and the different boundary conditions on the critical buckling loads are studied in detail, by assuming that Young’s modulus obeys an exponential distribution function in both length and thickness directions. To reach the desired critical buckling load, the appropriate exponential FG indexes and geometric shape of micro-beams can be designed according to the proposed theory.  相似文献

This paper deals with an analytical approach of the buckling behavior of a functionally graded circular cylindrical shell under axial pressure with external axial and circumferential stiffeners. The shell properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness direction. Fundamental relations and equilibrium and stability equations are derived using the third-order shear deformation theory. The resulting equations are employed to obtain the closed-form solution for the critical buckling loads. A simply supported boundary condition is considered for both edges of the shell. The comparison of the results of this study with those in the literature validates the present analysis. The effects of material composition (volume fraction exponent), of the number of stiffeners and of shell geometry parameters on the characteristics of the critical buckling load are described. The analytical results are compared and validated using the finite-element method. The results show that the inhomogeneity parameter, the geometry of the shell and the number of stiffeners considerably affect the critical buckling loads.  相似文献

Failure of structures and their components is one of major problems in engineering. Studies on mechanical behavior of functionally graded (FG) microplates with defects or cracks by effective numerical methods are rarely reported in literature. In this paper, an effective numerical model is derived based on extended isogeometric analysis (XIGA) for assessment of vibration and buckling of FG microplates with cracks. Based on the modified couple stress theory, the non-classical theory of Reissner–Mindlin plate is extended to capture microstructure, and thus, the size effect. In such theory, possessing C1-continuity is straightforward with the high-order continuity of non-uniform rational B-spline. Due to the use of enrichments in XIGA, crack geometry is independent of the computational mesh. Numerical examples are performed to illustrate the effects of microplate aspect ratio, crack length, internal material length scale parameter, material distribution, and boundary condition on the mechanical responses of cracked FG microplates. The obtained results are compared with reference solutions and that shows that the frequency and buckling loads increases with decreasing the size of FG microplates and crack length. The convergence of the present method is also studied.  相似文献

In the traditional continuum mechanics, the effects of surface free energy are generally ignored. However, this cannot be the case for nanostructures because of their high surface to volume ratio; surface energy plays an important role in the mechanical responses. In the present study, the nonlinear buckling and postbuckling characteristics of cylindrical nanoshells subjected to combined axial and radial compressions are investigated in the presence of surface energy effects. To this end, Gurtin–Murdoch elasticity theory is implemented into the classical first-order shear deformation shell theory to develop an efficient size-dependent shell model incorporating surface free energy effects. Subsequently, a boundary layer theory is employed including surface effects in conjunction with the nonlinear prebuckling deformations, the large postbuckling deflections and the initial geometric imperfection. Finally, a solution methodology based on a two-stepped singular perturbation technique is utilized to obtain the size-dependent critical buckling loads and equilibrium postbuckling paths corresponding to the both axial dominated and radial dominated loading cases. It is observed that for the both axial dominated and radial dominated loading cases, surface free energy effects cause to increase the both critical buckling load and critical end-shortening of shear deformable nanoshell made of silicon.  相似文献

Abstract

This article contains the nonlocal elasticity theory to capture size effects in functionally graded (FG) nano-rod under magnetic field supported by a torsional foundation. Torque effect of an axial magnetic field on an FG nano-rod has been defined using Maxwell’s relation. The material properties were assumed to vary according to the power law in radial direction. The Navier equation and boundary conditions of the size-dependent FG nano-rod were derived by the Hamilton’s principle. These equations were solved by employing the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM). Presented model has the ability to turn into the classical model if the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. The effects of some parameters, such as inhomogeneity constant, magnetic field and small-scale parameter, were studied. As an important result of this study can be stated that an FG nano-rod model based on the nonlocal elasticity theory behaves softer and has smaller natural frequency.  相似文献

Abstract

Since the two-directional functionally graded (2D-FG) materials can satisfy the new requirements raised based on the elimination of the stress concentration, delamination and cracking problems accompanying with the low cost and lightweight on the structures without sacrificing the stiffness and strength, the structural analyses of these structures become more important than ever. Moreover, the usage of the micro-electromechanical systems composed of 2D-FG materials has been increasing in automotive, military, space, biomedical, and nuclear energy industries. Within this study, the free vibration and buckling behaviors of 2D-FG porous microbeams are investigated based on the modified couple stress theory by employing a transverse shear-normal deformation beam theory and using finite element method. The effects of the thickness to material length scale parameter (MLSP) accompanying with the micro-porosity volume fraction ratio, boundary condition, aspect ratio, and gradient index on the dimensionless fundamental frequencies and dimensionless critical buckling loads of the 2D-FG porous microbeams are investigated. Moreover, with assumption of the variable material length scale parameters (VMLSP), the computed results are compared with ones obtained by employing constant MLSP. It is found that VMLSP increases the stiffness of the 2D-FG porous microbeams and effects the free vibration and buckling responses of these structures.  相似文献

On the basis of the modified strain gradient elasticity theory, the free vibration characteristics of curved microbeams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) whose material properties vary in the thickness direction are investigated. A size-dependent first-order shear deformation beam model is developed containing three internal material length scale parameters to incorporate small-scale effect. Through Hamilton’s principle, the higher-order governing equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived. Natural frequencies of FGM curved microbeams corresponding to different mode numbers are evaluated for over a wide range of material property gradient index, dimensionless length scale parameter and aspect ratio. Moreover, the results obtained via the present non-classical first-order shear deformation beam model are compared with those of degenerated beam models based on the modified couple stress and the classical theories. It is found that the difference between the natural frequencies predicted by the various beam models is more significant for lower values of dimensionless length scale parameter and higher values of mode number.  相似文献

In this paper, the stresses and buckling behaviors of a thick-walled micro sandwich panel with a flexible foam core and carbon nanotube reinforced composite(CNTRC) face sheets are considered based on the high-order shear deformation theory(HSDT) and the modified couple stress theory(MCST). The governing equations of equilibrium are obtained based on the total potential energy principle. The effects of various parameters such as the aspect ratio, elastic foundation, temperature changes, and volume fraction of the canbon nanotubes(CNTs) on the critical buckling loads, normal stress, shear stress, and deflection of the thick-walled micro cylindrical sandwich panel considering different distributions of CNTs are examined. The results are compared and validated with other studies, and showing an excellent compatibility. CNTs have become very useful and common candidates in sandwich structures, and they have been extensively used in many applications including nanotechnology, aerospace, and micro-structures. This paper also extends further applications of reinforced sandwich panels by providing the modified equations and formulae.  相似文献
