Analytical possibilities of a two-step atomizer with an argon purged vaporizer have been investigated from the point of view of the strong matrix interfering samples analysis. Compared with other atomizers, this device provides the best relative sensitivity and minimal background and chemical interference values. With this system determination of Cd and Pb in 10-fold diluted sea water and in highly concentrated solutions of different salts is possible using a D2 corrector even without matrix modifiers.

A new method was developed for the direct electrothermal atomic absorption determination of mercury in drinking water and urine using double vaporization in a two-step atomizer with a purged vaporizer. In this method, a sample is placed in the vaporizer of a two-step atomizer, dried, and vaporized. The sample vapor is transferred to an unheated atomizer cell with a flow of argon and trapped by the inner surface of cell walls. This procedure can be performed repeatedly to preconcentrate mercury in the atomizer cell. Next, a portion of the sample transferred to the inner surface of the atomizer cell is revaporized and atomized by heating the atomizer cell of the two-step atomizer with a purged vaporizer, and the atomic absorption of mercury is measured. It was found that the degree of mercury transfer and trapping is as high as 100% at sufficiently high temperatures of primary vaporization, regardless of the material of the inner surface of the atomizer cell. The detection limits for mercury were 0.24 or 0.024 µg/L for drinking water at a sample volume of 100 µL using a single sample transfer or the procedure repeated ten times, respectively, and 2.0 µg/L for urine at a sample volume of 20 µL and a single sample transfer. The accuracy of the results was confirmed by the analysis of certified mercury samples and samples with known additives.Translated from Zhurnal Analiticheskoi Khimii, Vol. 60, No. 1, 2005, pp. 45–51.Original Russian Text Copyright © 2005 by Vilpan, Grinshtein, Akatov, Gucer.

A direct determination of cadmium by electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry with a molybdenum tube atomizer has been investigated. Direct calibration method with cadmium standard solutions and ultrasonic agitation method of a solution including sample powder were used. Sulfur served as a matrix modifier for removal of interferences. Though this direct analytical method for cadmium determination in biological materials had a relatively large standard deviation, the accuracy was similar or superior to those of a sample digestion method and the direct analysis without sulfur. The advantages of this method are its simplicity, low cost, high speed of analysis, and rapid calibration.

A method has been developed for the direct simultaneous determination of Cd and Pb in white and red wine by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS) using a transversely heated graphite tube atomizer (THGA) with longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction. The thermal behavior of both analytes during pyrolysis and atomization stages were investigated in 0.028 mol l−1 HNO3 and in 1+1 v/v diluted wine using mixtures of Pd(NO3)2+Mg(NO3)2 and NH4H2PO4+Mg(NO3)2 as chemical modifiers. With 5 μg Pd+3 μg Mg as the modifiers and a two-step pyrolysis (10 s at 400°C and 10 s at 600°C), the formation of carbonaceous residues inside the atomizer was avoided. For 20 μl of sample (wine+0.056 mol l−1 HNO3, 1+1, v/v) dispensed into the graphite tube, analytical curves in the 0.10–1.0 μg l−1 Cd and 5.0–50 μg l−1 Pb ranges were established. The characteristic mass was approximately 0.6 pg for Cd and 33 pg for Pb, and the lifetime of the tube was approximately 400 firings. The limits of detection (LOD) based on integrated absorbance (0.03 μg l−1 for Cd, 0.8 μg l−1 for Pb) exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulations (decree #55871 from Health Department), which establish the maximum permissible level for Cd at 200 μg l−1 and for Pb at 500 μg l−1. The relative standard deviations (n=12) were typically <8% for Cd and <6% for Pb. The recoveries of Cd and Pb added to wine samples varied from 88 to 107% and 93 to 103%, respectively. The accuracy of the direct determination of Cd and Pb was checked for 10 table wines by comparing the results with those obtained for digested wine using single-element ET-AAS, which were in agreement at the 95% confidence level.

It is shown that suspended forms of Cd, Pb, and Hg can be simultaneously determined in river and sea waters by direct atomic absorption spectrometry with two independent stages of the fractional evaporation of solid suspensions (at <1000°C and >1500°C) in the system crucible (vaporizer)-core (collector). An electrothermal atomizer core-cell-core with two vaporization zones and an independently heated common analytical zone is proposed for analyzing condensates. The approach ensures the determination of cadmium and lead at the level below the clarke values for suspended substances and mercury in the range of average-increased concentrations.

A laboratory constructed molybdenum tube atomizer was used for direct determination of trace cadmium in drug samples by the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric (ETAAS) method. An ultrasonic agitation method for a solution including the sample powder was used. A calibration curve was constructed with a cadmium standard solution including matrix. To eliminate interference from other matrix elements, a chemical modifier thiourea, was used. The detection limit were 17 pg ml(-1) (3 S/N), and the RSD of the direct analysis was 5-17%. The results for cadmium in the four drug samples analysed by the direct ETAAS method matched well with those obtained with nitric acid digested samples. The recovery of added cadmium was 103-106%. An accurate method is elaborated for the determination of cadmium in drug samples by direct ETAAS techniques. The merits of this method are rapid calibration, simplicity, fast analysis, and low cost.

This work described methodology of Sn, Pb, Cd and Zn impurities determination in high-purity graphite at direct atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) with flame furnace (FF) atomizer. It was evidence that quality of AAS measurements are depended from sample amount, its homogeneity, particle size, as well as calibration procedure and operation parameters of FF atomizer. Prior to analysis the method has been developed and optimized with respect to the furnace heating temperature and flame composition of FF atomizer. Conditions of absorption peak areas (QA) formation to each element were studied on the basis of contribution into its value some of individual parameters of analytes, including mass-transporting process from increasing mass of graphite samples into gas phase. Because particle size and homogeneous distribution of analyte in powdered materials has an enormous influence on accuracy and precision of measurement results, graphite as well as appropriate series of powdered reference standards was previously ground and investigated. Graphite samples to be analyzed and standard reference materials with mass from 0.025 to 0.200 g was previously briquetted as pellet and insert on corresponding hole in furnace. The characteristic mass (g0) of Sn, Pb, Cd and Zn were 0.35, 0.1, 0.008 and 0.025 ng, respectively, and relative standard deviation (Sr) not more than 20%.

A simplified method for direct determination of lead in sweet fruit-flavored powder drinks, syrups and honeys by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry without sample digestion is proposed. Samples were dissolved in water, acidified to 0.2% (v/v) HNO3, and directly injected into an end-capped transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA). Building up of carbonaceous residue inside the atomizer was effectively precluded for sugar solutions not exceeding 8.0% (m/v) when a heating program with two pyrolysis steps (600 and 1000°C) was carried out without air-ashing. Under these conditions one atomizer supported about 250 firings. Among various chemical modifiers tested, better recovery and repeatability results were obtained with a 5 μg Pd + 3 μg Mg(NO3)2 mixture. Tests carried out with individual concomitants containing up to 1.0 μg Na, K, Ca or Cl, and up to 10.0 μg phosphate or sulphate, and several mixtures of these six concomitants, did not reveal significant interferences on lead atomization. Characteristic mass and detection limit based on integrated absorbance were 15 and 11 pg Pb, respectively. The relative standard deviation based on 10 measurements for typical samples (20–60 ng g−1 Pb) was always lower than 5.5%. The detection limit of 7.0 ng g−1 Pb attained the Codex recommendation for the maximum allowed lead contents in the sugar samples. Application of t-test to the results obtained by the proposed direct analysis, and the official method adopted by Food Chemical Codex, demonstrated that there were no significant differences at the 5% probability level.

Determination of cadmium in urine by ETAAS suffers from severe interferences deteriorating the precision and accuracy of the analysis. Electrodeposition step prior to ETAAS allows to avoid interferences and makes cadmium determination possible even at ultratrace levels. The proposed procedures involve electrolytic deposition of cadmium from acidified urine on previously electrolytically deposited palladium film on a graphite atomizer tube, followed by removal of residual solution, pyrolysis and atomization. Both electrodeposition processes take place in a drop of the respective solution (palladium nitrate modifier and acidified urine, respectively), when Pt/Ir dosing capillary serves as an anode and the graphite tube represents a cathode. The voltage is held at −3.0 V. Matrix removal is then accomplished by withdrawal of the depleted sample solution from the tube (procedure A) or the same but followed by rinsing of the deposit with 0.2 mol l−1 HNO3 (procedure B). The accuracy of both procedures was verified by recovery test. Detection limits 0.025 and 0.030 μg Cd/l of urine were achieved for A and B procedures, respectively. Both procedures are time consuming. The measurement cycle represents 5 and 7 min for A and B procedures, respectively.

The concentration of lead and cadmium in different kinds of milk samples (powdered, infant formula, market, buffalo, condensed and human) were determined using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometric technique. Among all the varieties of milk analysed, condensed milk was found to contain much higher amount of lead. Human milk as expected was found to have lowest concentration of these elements. The results were compared with the reported values of other countries. Daily intake of these toxic elements by adults and babies up to the age of six months through the consumption of various types of milk was estimated and compared with the tolerance levels.

A procedure for the determination of cadmium in fresh, coastal and estuarine waters by polarized Zeeman-effect graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry is validated by using lake waters and seawater. The limit of detection for freshwaters is <2 ng l?1 cadmium. Undiluted seawater can be analyzed directly without the addition of matrix modifiers with the aid of a stabilized temperature platform. The instrument is calibrated with diluted NBS SRM 1643a (Trace Elements in Water). Analytical performance was tested extensively with fresh and brackish water samples and procedures were worked out to ensure that a high degree of accurately is achieved consistently.

Summary Electrothermal atomization of thallium in a molybdenum microtube atomizer is described. The addition of a low flow rate of hydrogen to argon purge gas resulted in higher peak absorption. In the presence of thiourea the addition of hydrogen did not alter the peak absorption value in pure argon, although the peak temperature shifted to lower region. A high heating rate of the atomizer was recommended for higher peak absorption and improvement of interferences from concomitants. The interferences by concomitants at 50 ng level were modified with thiourea. Modification with thiourea was effective even for interferences from 500 ng of cadmium, zinc or copper, while it was insufficient for 500 ng of calcium, magnesium, chromium, bismuth or lead. Provided the atomization of thallium was carried out at high heating rate and on addition of thiourea as a matrix modifier, the interference from chloride (500 ng) was modified. The absolute sensitivity (0.0044 abs) for thallium was 1.2 pg.

Summary A method is described for the determination of traces of lead and copper in foods by a microcomputer-processed atomic absorption spectrometry with a molybdenum micro-tube atomizer. Accurate results of lead and copper are obtained by atomization in the presence of thiourea. Thiourea contributes to a highly reproducible atomization profile and reduction of interferences from concomitant elements in foods. Solid samples are digested with nitric acid in the Uni-seal decomposition vessel, while liquid or water-soluble samples are directly atomized.

Ultrasonic slurry sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with a metal tube atomizer has been applied to the determination of lead in Bangladeshi fish samples. The slurry sampling conditions, such as slurry stabilizing agent, slurry concentration, pyrolysis temperature for the slurried fish samples, particle size and ultrasonic agitation time, were optimized for electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with the Mo tube atomizer. Thiourea was used as the chemical modifier for the interference of matrix elements. The detection limit was 53 fg (3S/N). The determined amount of lead in Bangladeshi fish samples was consistent with those measured in the dissolved acid-digested samples. The advantages of the proposed methods are easy calibration, simplicity, low cost and rapid analysis.

Procedures for the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometric determination of lead and cadmium in urine, serum and blood are developed. For serum and blood, the samples are diluted by incorporating 0.015% (w/v) Triton X-100 and 0.1% (w/v) ammonium dihydrogenphosphate to the solutions, which are then introduced directly into the furnace. A solution containing 15% (w/v) hydrogen peroxide and 0.65% (w/v) nitric acid is also introduced into the atomizer by means of a separate injection. Zeeman-based correction is recommended. Both conventional and fast-heating programs are discussed. Calibration is carried out using the standard additions method. The reliability of the procedures is checked by analyzing three certified reference materials and by recovery studies.

The applicability of a DETATA sorbent to the preconcentration of lead and cadmium followed by the determination of these elements in urine using atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization was demonstrated. After preconcentration by a factor of 10, the limits of detection were 0.01 and 0.2 μg/L for cadmium and lead, respectively. The accuracy of the results was supported by the analysis of Seronorm Trace Elements Urine (Batch no. 101021).

In this work it was evaluated the determination of Cd and Pb in mussels by tungsten coil electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (TCA-AAS). A critical and comprehensive study of the effects caused by Pd, Mg, ascorbic acid, and binary mixtures of these compounds on the atomization of Cd and Pb in acid digested solutions of mussels was performed. Palladium and mixtures containing it were useful to increase sensitivity and thermal stability of Cd and Pb. Additionally, the coil lifetime was increased and the background signals were decreased in these modifiers. All these favorable effects were analytically exploited to determine Cd and Pb in samples of mussels. The proposed methodology was validated using two certified reference materials (oyster tissue and mussel). No statistical difference was observed between determined and certified values at a 95% confidence level. Cadmium and Pb in Chilean bivalve mussels were determined by TCA and by graphite furnace-AAS. Again, the results showed statistical agreement.

The parameters of analytical procedures developed for direct ETAAS determination of Pb in wine are discussed. Atomic absorption spectrometers based on transversal and longitudinal Zeeman effect, wall and integrated platform atomization with two main approaches: (i) measurements in the presence of modifier and (ii) measurements without using any modifier are compared. The optimal temperature programs are defined according to the pre-treatment and atomization curves constructed in the presence of different types of wines. For all investigated instrumental systems, 1:1 dilution of wine sample with 0.2 mol L−1 HNO3 is recommended. Matrix interferences observed, call for standard addition calibration method for Pb quantification in wines. The detection limit (3σ) achieved for wine diluted in the ratio of 1:1 varied from 0.8 to 1.9 μg L−1 depending on the instrument used. The relative standard deviation for the concentration range of 10 to 80 μg L−1 Pb in wine is typically between 4–8%. The accuracy of the analytical procedures recommended was confirmed by comparing the results obtained with those found for wine samples previously digested with HNO3-H2O2 mixture, by added/found method and by parallel analysis using different instruments. A total of 66 wine samples from different regions of Macedonia were analyzed.

A method for the multielement determination of cadmium and lead in urine is proposed by simultaneous electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (SIMAAS) with an end-capped transversely heated graphite atomizer (EC-THGA). The best conditions for cadmium and lead determination were obtained in the presence of NH4H2PO4 as a chemical modifier, using 500 degrees C and 1800 degrees C as the pyrolysis and atomization temperatures, respectively. Urine samples were diluted 1 + 4 directly in autosampler cups with a mixture of 0.125% (w/v) Triton X-100 + 2.5% (v/v) HNO3 + 0.31% (w/v) NH4H2PO4. The optimized heating program was carried out in 57 s, and the instrument calibration was done with aqueous reference solutions. The use of EC-THGA increased the sensitivity of cadmium and lead by 14% and 25%, respectively. The detection limits (n = 20, 3delta) were 0.03 microg L(-1) (0.36 pg) for cadmium and 0.57 microg L(-1) (6.8 pg) for lead. The performance of EC-THGA was acceptable up to 500 heating cycles. The reliability of the entire procedure was checked with the analysis of a lyophilized urine certified reference material. The found concentrations were in agreement with the recommended values (95% confidence level).
