Achiral 'swallow-tailed' liquid crystalline materials are known to give alternating-tilt smectic C phases (SCalt) which have structural similarities to the chiral antiferroelectric phases denoted as S*CA. This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of three achiral branchedalkyl 4-(4'-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoates. Optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry confirm that these materials show SCalt and overlying SA phases. The compounds were investigated as potential hosts which could be doped with a chiral ferroelectric liquid crystal so as to provide a viable- antiferroelectric mixture. These studies (microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry), to characterize the properties of the mixtures, show that antiferroelectric phases are induced. However, switching studies show that the antiferroelectric phases are extremely stable, a property which is almost certainly a consequence of the length of the lateral branching groups (ethyl, propyl and butyl).  相似文献

The mechanical properties of fibers were notably improved by incorporating 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)- benzidine(TFMB) into 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride(s-BPDA) and p-phenylenediamine(PPD) backbone. The best strength and modulus of BPDA/PPD/TFMB polyimide(PI) fiber(diamine molar ratio of PPD/TFMB= 90/10) were 1.60 and 90 GPa, respectively, which was over two times that of BPDA/PPD PI fiber. SEM image showed that the cross-section of fibers at each stage was round and voids free. Besides, the “skin-core” and microfibrillar structure were not observed. The thermal properties of PI fibers were also investigated. The results showed that the fibers owned excellent thermal stability, moreover, the structural homogeneity of fibers were significantly improved by heat-drawn stage. The Tg values were found to be around 300℃ by dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA). Wide angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) experiments indicated that the order degree of longitudinal and lateral stacks, the molecular orientation and the structural homogeneity of fibers were improved in the preparation process of fibers.  相似文献

An achiral swallow-tailed material, 2-propylpentyl 4-(4'-decyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoate, p, showing SmA and SmCalt phases was prepared for mixing (by weight percentage) with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, (S)-MHPOBC, m, for the study. The binary mixture p15/m85 using (S)-MHPOBC (85%) as a host doped with achiral material (15%) resulted in a phase sequence SmA-SmC*-SmC*A. The electro-optic response of this mixture in the ferroelectric SmC* phase displayed V-shaped switching, while that in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase displayed a double hysteresis switching. The mixture p85/m15 possessed SmA* and SmC*A phases; V-shaped switching was found in the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase of this mixture. These optical phenomena implied that a binary mixture containing a larger amount of achiral swallow-tailed material and/or possessing relatively lower polarization favours the occurrence of V-shaped switching in the antiferroelectric phase. The results of this work also suggested that thresholdless V-shaped switching in chiral smectic liquid crystals can be achieved by mixing an achiral swallow-tailed material with an antiferroelectric liquid crystal.  相似文献

We report the dielectric relaxation behaviour in the antiferroelectric SmCA* and ferrielectric SmCγ* phases of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4-[5-(4-octloxyphenyl)-2-pyrimidinyl]phenyl 4,4,4-trifluoro-3-(methoxyphenyl)butanoate which shows an antiferroelectric transition at around 88±0.1°C. In the SmCA* phase, two dielectric relaxation modes have been found, namely the usual antiferroelectric Goldstone mode and another arising from molecular rotation around its short axis. In the SmCγ* phase, one dielectric relaxation mode has been observed due to the ferrielectric Goldstone mode. Dielectric increments and relaxation frequencies of the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric phases are estimated from the fits of the Cole-Cole function of the dielectric spectrum. The dependence of the bias field in the ferrielectric phase is also discussed.  相似文献

A fluorinated tetracarboxylic dianhydride (amide-type TA-TFMB) was prepared from trimellitic anhydride chloride and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB). A chemically imidized polyimide (PI) derived from TA-TFMB and TFMB was rather soluble in various solvents. Solution casting of this PI (TA-TFMB/TFMB) led to a flexible, non-turbid, and seemingly almost colorless PI film with a high Tg of 328 °C and a considerably low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of 9.9 ppm K−1 which results from significant in-plane chain orientation induced during solution casting. The self-orientation mechanism is discussed. The properties of TA-TFMB/TFMB were compared with those of some relevant systems. The results suggest that an electron-withdrawing effect of the 2,2′-CF3 substituents of TA-TFMB and a twisted conformation of the central biphenyl moiety greatly contribute to the suppressed coloration of the TA-TFMB/TFMB film. The use of a TA-TFMB counterpart (ester-type TA-TFBP) was effective for further enhancing the transparency owing to reduced charge-transfer interaction. However, the thermal properties of TA-TFBP/TFMB were not always satisfactory. Copolymerization using 2,3,6,7-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride led to a PI film with an increased Tg of 277 °C and a very low CTE of 12.6 ppm K−1 without significant decreases in the transparency and the solubility. Thus, this work proposes promising candidates as novel heat-resistant plastic substrate materials in display devices.  相似文献

Heat capacities of the antiferroelectric liquid crystals 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl4-octyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (MHPOBC) and 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl4-octylcarboxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate (MHPOCBC), have been measured with an adiabatic calorimeter between 350 and 460 K. MHPOBC showed three smectic subphases (ferrielectric C*, ferroelectric C* and a fancy phase C*) between antiferroelectric smectic C* and paraelectric gamma alpha smectic A, while MHPOCBC exhibited only one subphase (smectic C*). These phases are clearly discriminated by the existence of phase transitions. The enthalpies and entropies gained at the respective phase transitions were very small. A much larger phase transition from smectic A to isotropic liquid was also observed in both compounds. A alpha  相似文献

Novel chiral (S)-(+)-4?-(1-methylalkoxycarbonyl)biphenyl-4-yl 4-[ω-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-hepta?uoro-butoxy)alkoxy]benzoates and 4-[ω-(2,2,3,3,4,4,4-hepta?uorobutoxy)alkoxy]-2-fluorobenzoates were prepared using different optically active alcohols: (S)-(+)-2-hexanol, (S)-(+)-2-heptanol, (S)-(+)-2-nonanol, (S)-(+)-2-decanol, (S)-(+)-2-undecanol and (S)-(+)-5-methylhexan-2-ol. Properties, such as the sequence of phases, transition temperatures and enthalpies, were tested by polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Extremely low melting compounds were found (below 10°C) for derivatives of (S)-(+)-2-hexanol. The antiferroelectric smectic phase (SmCA*) with a direct transition from the antiferroelectric to isotropic phase (SmCA*-Iso) was observed, usually for propoxy-(CH2)3- spacing group. Initially, multicomponent mixtures with broad temperature ranges of antiferroelectric phase and direct SmCA*-Iso transition were formulated.  相似文献

A detailed study of the field induced polarization switching has been carried out over the whole temperature range of the antiferroelectric B2 phase of a banana-shaped compound, the tetradecyl homologue ( n =14) of the series 4-chloro-1,3-phenylene bis[4-(4- n -alkylphenylimino)benzoate]s. The fine structure of the current response oscillograms was attributed to the field switching of two antiferroelectric subsystems, most probably the racemic and homogeneously chiral domains which, according to the Boulder group, appear as a result of the spontaneous breaking of mirror symmetry. The temperature and field dependences of polarization as well as switching times and the corresponding viscosity of the substance have been measured.  相似文献

This paper reports the synthesis of six chiral liquid crystalline 2- or 3-substituted-alkyl 4-(4'-dodecyloxybiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoates, their mesophase assignments and the phase transition temperatures. All six materials display S*A followed by S*C phases on cooling from their isotropic liquids. The magnitudes of switched tilt angle, spontaneous polarization, helical twist sense (L.H.) and direction of polarization (Ps(-)) are given for the S*C phases. Close inspection of the S*C phases revealed that for the six compounds, two showed a ferrielectric (S*Cγ) and an antiferroelectric (S*A) subphase, two showed only a ferrielectric subphase and one showed only an antiferroelectric subphase. The field-dependent behaviour of the switched tilt angle of the ferrielectric and antiferroelectric phases of some of the compounds is also presented.  相似文献

New antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) with a trifluoromethyl group at the chiral centre were synthesized using optically active 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4,4,4-trifluorobutanoic acid. The new AFLCs showed the phase sequence on cooling: isotropic liquid (I)-smectic A (Sa) phase-antiferroelectric (AF) phase-crystal (Cr). In the antiferroelectric phase, a d.c.-threshold, a double hysteresis loop, a small dielectric constant value and two sharp switching-current peaks were observed. These are the first examples that are AFLCs which do not have a carbonyl moiety in the molecule.  相似文献

Abstract

A detailed study of the dielectric and optical properties of the ferroelectric liquid crystal material (R)-4′-(3-methoxycarbonyl-2-propoxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-(4-(n-octyloxy)phenyl)benzoate (3MC2PCPOPB) has been carried out. It has been found that an anomalous temperature dependence of the dielectric constant in 3MC2PCPOPB is due to the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric properties. A T(temperature)-E(electric field) phase diagram has been obtained on the basis of the apparent tilt angle measurements. In a thin cell (< 3 μm), both ferroelectric and antiferroelectric domains are simultaneously observed over a wide temperature range, and the complete antiferroelectric phase does not appear even at low temperature. A characteristic texture in which boundary focal conics are aligned parallel to a smectic layer has been observed. The movement of the zig-zag defect line caused by the application of the voltage is also observed.  相似文献

A new banana-shaped achiral compound, 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(3-fluoro-4-n-octyloxyphenyliminomethyl)benzoate] (PBFOB) was synthesized and its antiferroelectric liquid crystallinity determined. The PBFOB was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffractometry in the small and wide angle regions, and polarizing optical microscopy; its polarization and antiferroelectric properties were also investigated. The presence of a lateral fluoro-substituent in the banana-shaped achiral molecules containing a Schiff's base mesogen induced a decrease in melting temperature and formation of the switchable smectic B2 phase in the melt. The spontaneous polarization for PBFOB was about 250 nC cm-2 and the polarization of this phase switched on the reversal of an applied electric field.  相似文献

A homologous series of chiral twin liquid crystals possessing identical chiral moieties at both peripheral ends, i.e. optically active α,ω -bis{4-[(4′-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)-4-biphenylyl)oxycarbony]phenoxy}alkanes, has been prepared and their liquid crystalline properties investigated. The homologues preferred to show the ferrielectric and/or antiferroelectric phase rather than the ferroelectric phase. With ascending central spacer length, the temperature range of the ferrielectric phase became narrow and eventually disappeared for the dodecyl homologue, suggesting that the coupling in motion and/or direction between two mesogenic parts of each twin molecule has an important effect on the stabilization of the ferrielectric phase. The octyl and dodecyl homologues showed a wide temperature range chiral nematic phase (ca. 10°C or more), so that these compounds were found to be the first examples showing antiferroelectric and/or ferrielectric phases with a broad temperature range of the chiral nematic phase. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the homologues tend to form a mono-layered structure. The formation of a relatively well defined layered structure was also indicated, which is considered to be important for generating anticlinic ordering in the antiferroelectric and ferrielectric phases. An isotropic-isotropic transition characterized by the emergence of a broad diffuse DSC peak was observed for the even-membered homologues.  相似文献

Two new chiral series with a tolane core: (S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IB) and (S) 4-(1-ethylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl (series IC) 4-alkanoyloxytolane-4'-carboxylates have been synthesized and characterized. All the compounds are mesomorphic, and most of them display the antiferroelectric SmC*A phase. The mesomorphic properties have been analysed by optical microscopy, DSC, helical pitch and electro-optical measurements and X-ray diffraction study. Series IB exhibits a very rich polymesomorphism with SmC*alpha, SmC*, SmC* F12, SmC* F11 and SmC*A phases, like the previously reported series IA, [(S) 4-(1-methylheptyloxycarbonyl)phenyl 4-alkyloxytolane-4-carboxylates]. Series IC is more interesting because it presents for the first time in antiferroelectric series the liquid-like phase (L phase) between the SmC*A and isotropic phases. Preliminary optical studies plead in favour of a helical short range structure for this new liquid-like L phase.  相似文献
