In this work, the TPSSh density functional has been benchmarked against a test set of experimental structures and bond energies for 80 transition-metal-containing diatomics. It is found that the TPSSh functional gives structures of the same quality as other commonly used hybrid and nonhybrid functionals such as B3LYP and BP86. TPSSh gives a slope of 0.99 upon linear fitting to experimental bond energies, whereas B3LYP and BP86, representing 20% and 0% exact exchange, respectively, give linear fits with slopes of 0.91 and 1.07. Thus, TPSSh eliminates the large systematic component of the error in other functionals, reducing rms errors from 46-57 to 34 kJ/mol. The nonhybrid version of the functional, TPSS, gives a slope of 1.08, similar to BP86, implying that using 10% exact exchange is the main reason for the success of TPSSh. Typical bioinorganic reactions were then investigated, including spin inversion and electron affinity in iron-sulfur clusters, and breaking or formation of bonds in iron proteins and cobalamins. The results show that differences in reaction energies due to exact exchange can be much larger than the usually cited approximately 20 kJ/mol, sometimes exceeding 100 kJ/mol. The TPSSh functional provides energies approximately halfway between nonhybrids BP86 and TPSS, and 20% exact exchange hybrid B3LYP: Thus, a linear correlation between the amount of exact exchange and the numeric value of the reaction energy is observed in all these cases. For these reasons, TPSSh stands out as a most promising density functional for use and further development within the field of bioinorganic chemistry.  相似文献

The theoretical determination of electric response properties of the biological systems is a field where the application of density functional theory (DFT) appears to be quite promising. In this work, the performance of 41 density functional methods is evaluated in predicting dynamic polarizabilities of an experimental benchmark set of 20 proteinogenic amino acids. The behavior of a large number of density functionals, including various types of the local spin density approximation (LSDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), meta‐GGA (m‐GGA), hybrid‐GGA (h‐GGA), hybrid meta‐GGA (hm‐GGA), and range‐separated hybrid‐GGA (rsh‐GGA), has been assessed for the purpose. Analyzing the results of our DFT benchmarking, we found that these computationally economical methods show very diverse predictive capability and a careful selection of DFT functionals is very important in the polarizability calculations. Considering the role of exchange, correlation, dispersion and long‐range corrections, it turned out that in the LSDA class, SVWN3 gives better results than SPL and SVWN5 toward the reference values. Of the GGA methods, OPBE outperforms all other functionals. The M06‐L is the best method of m‐GGA class. The B3LYP and TPSSh are the best functionals of h‐GGA and hm‐GGA lineages, respectively. Finally, CAM‐B3LYP is the best method of rsh‐GGA functionals that predicts the most accurate polarizability for amino acids by a large margin with respect to others. Overall, the best performing functionals turn out to be hm‐GGAs TPSSh, TPSS1KCIS, M05, tau‐HCTHhyb, and h‐GGA B3LYP. Hopefully, the results of this investigation might provide the useful guidance to propose a new exchange‐correlation functional for calculating the optical properties of biomolecular materials. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The recently proposed CAM-B3LYP exchange-correlation energy functional, based on a partitioning of the r operator in the exchange interaction into long- and short-range components, is assessed for the determination of molecular thermochemistry, structures, and second order response properties. Rydberg and charge transfer excitation energies and static electronic polarisabilities are notably improved over the standard B3LYP functional; classical reaction barriers also improve. Ionisation potentials, bond lengths, NMR shielding constants and indirect spin-spin coupling constants are comparable with the two functionals. CAM-B3LYP atomisation energies and diatomic harmonic vibrational wavenumbers are less accurate than those of B3LYP. Future research directions are outlined.  相似文献

We apply many criteria to estimate the diradical character of the ground state singlets of several oxyallyl derivatives. This is carried out as the oxyallyl derivatives like squaraine and croconate dyes can be represented by both mesoionic and diradical formulas, the domination of which would characterize its lowest energy transition. One criterion applied is the singlet-triplet gap, which is known to be inversely proportional to the diradical character. Another criterion is the occupation number; this is determined for the symmetry broken state of the molecules in the unrestricted formalism, and the difference of occupation in the HOMO and LUMO is related to the diradical character. The diradical character of all of the croconates and few squaraines is estimated to be large. All of these have absorption above 750 nm and can be classified as near infrared (NIR) dyes, leading to the inference that NIR absorptions in these molecules are largely due to the dominance of the diradical character. To understand the reliability of the DFT methods for the absorption property predictions of these molecules, TD-DFT studies to calculate the vertical excitation energies have been carried out, using the B3LYP/ BLYP exchange correlation functionals and the LB94 asymptotic functional with and without the inclusion of solvent. The deviations, in both the squaraine series (average lower diradical character), are found to be systematic, and with the inclusion of the solvent in the calculation, the deviations decrease. The best least-squares fit with the experimentally observed values using B3LYP /6-311G(d, p) for the symmetric squaraines yields an R value of 0.92 and, for the unsymmetric squaraines, an R value of 0.936. With inclusion of the solvent, the R value is 0.96 for the symmetric squaraines and 0.961 for the unsymmetric squaraines, indicating that these DFT functionals with linear scaling may be used to study these systems. The croconate dyes, however, have larger deviation from the experimentally observed values in all of the functionals studied even after inclusion of the solvent effects. The deviations are also not systematic. The deviation with respect to the experiment in this case is attributed to the average larger diradical character in this series.  相似文献

We derive here the form for the exact exchange energy density for a density that decays with Gaussian-type behavior at long range. This functional is intermediate between the B88 and the PW91 exchange functionals. Using this modified functional to match the form expected for Gaussian densities, we propose the X3LYP extended functional. We find that X3LYP significantly outperforms Becke three parameter Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) for describing van der Waals and hydrogen bond interactions, while performing slightly better than B3LYP for predicting heats of formation, ionization potentials, electron affinities, proton affinities, and total atomic energies as validated with the extended G2 set of atoms and molecules. Thus X3LYP greatly enlarges the field of applications for density functional theory. In particular the success of X3LYP in describing the water dimer (with R(e) and D(e) within the error bars of the most accurate determinations) makes it an excellent candidate for predicting accurate ligand-protein and ligand-DNA interactions.  相似文献

We present a database of 21 bond dissociation energies for breaking metal-ligand bonds. The molecules in the metal-ligand bond energy database are AgH, CoH, CoO+, CoOH+, CrCH3+, CuOH2+, FeH, Fe(CO)5, FeO, FeS, LiCl, LiO, MgO, MnCH3NiCH2+, Ni(CO)4, RhC, VCO+, VO, and VS. We have also created databases of metal-ligand bond lengths and atomic ionization potentials. The molecules used for bond lengths are AgH, BeO, CoH, CoO+, FeH, FeO, FeS, LiCl, LiO, MgO, RhC, VO, and VS and the ionization potentials are for the following atoms: C, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, O, and V. The data were chosen based on their diversity and expected reliability, and they are used along with three previously developed databases (transition metal dimer bond energies and bond lengths and main-group molecular atomization energies) for assessing the accuracy of several kinds of density functionals. In particular, we report tests for 42 previously defined functionals: 2 local spin density approximation (LSDA) functionals, 14 generalized gradient approximation (GGA) methods, 13 hybrid GGA methods, 7 meta GGA methods, and 8 hybrid meta GGA methods. In addition to these functionals, we also examine the effectiveness of scaling the correlation energy by testing 13 functionals with scaled or no gradient-corrected correlation energy, and we find that functionals of this kind are more accurate for metal-metal and metal-ligand bonds than any of the functionals already in the literature. We also present a readjusted GGA and a hybrid GGA with parameters adjusted for metals. When we consider these 57 functionals for metal-ligand and metal-metal bond energies simultaneously with main-group atomization energies, atomic ionization potentials, and bond lengths we find that the most accurate functional is G96LYP, followed closely by MPWLYP1M (new in this article), XLYP, BLYP, and MOHLYP (also new in this article). Four of these five functionals have no Hartree-Fock exchange, and the other has only 5%. As a byproduct of this work we introduce a convenient diagnostic, called the B1 diagnostic, for ascertaining the multireference character in a bond.  相似文献

The present contribution assesses the performance of several popular and accurate density functionals, namely B3LYP, BP86, M06, MN12L, mPWPW91, PBE0, and TPSSh toward manganese‐based coordination complexes. These compounds show promising properties toward application to catalytic water oxidation. Although manganese with N‐ and O‐biding ligands tends to give rise to high spin complexes, the results show that BP86, mPWPW91, and specially MN12L, tend to yield low‐spin complexes. The usage of these functionals for such compounds is, thus, discouraged. All the functionals considered deliver accurate geometries. The present results show, however, that B3LYP delivers geometries deviating from experimental values when compared to the other functionals of the set. M06, PBE0, and TPSSh deliver geometries of similar accuracy, PBE0 outstanding slightly with respect to the other two. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

We have investigated the performance of the OLYP and O3LYP density functionals for predicting atomic excitation energies and ionization potentials, and bond dissociation energies, geometries, and vibrational frequencies for selected first-row transition metal compounds, including hydrides (MH) and singly charged methylene and methyl cations. The OLYP and O3LYP functionals are similar to the well-known BLYP and B3LYP functionals, respectively, but use a new optimized exchange functional (OPTX) developed by Handy and Cohen (Mol Phys 2001, 99, 403) in place of the standard B88 exchange. A previous study by us on organic reactions (J Chem Phys 2002, 117, 1331) indicated that both OLYP and O3LYP gave results for heats of reaction and barrier heights that were overall superior to those using the popular B3LYP functional. For transition metals, however, although OLYP is overall superior to BLYP for molecular calculations, it is inferior to B3LYP. O3LYP provides results for molecules of about the same quality as B3LYP. For atomic excitation and 4s ionization energies, unless relativistic effects are included, OLYP and O3LYP are clearly worse than both BLYP and B3LYP. There is thus no real incentive to use either OLYP or O3LYP in place of B3LYP for calculations involving first-row transition metals.  相似文献

In this work, we take a different angle to the benchmarking of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) for the calculation of excited-state geometries by extensively assessing how accurate such geometries are compared to ground-state geometries calculated with ordinary DFT. To this end, we consider 20 medium-sized aromatic organic compounds whose lowest singlet excited states are ideally suited for TD-DFT modeling and are very well described by the approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2) method, and then use this method and six different density functionals (BP86, B3LYP, PBE0, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97XD) to optimize the corresponding ground- and excited-state geometries. The results show that although each hybrid functional reproduces the CC2 excited-state bond lengths very satisfactorily, achieving an overall root mean square error of 0.011 Å for all 336 bonds in the 20 molecules, these errors are distinctly larger than those of only 0.004–0.006 Å with which the hybrid functionals reproduce the CC2 ground-state bond lengths. Furthermore, for each functional employed, the variation in the error relative to CC2 between different molecules is found to be much larger (by at least a factor of 3) for the excited-state geometries than for the ground-state geometries, despite the fact that the molecules/states under investigation have rather uniform chemical and spectroscopic character. Overall, the study finds that even in favorable circumstances, TD-DFT excited-state geometries appear intrinsically and comparatively less accurate than DFT ground-state ones.  相似文献

The performance of 17 exchange-correlation functionals for molecules containing heavy elements are numerically examined through four-component relativistic density DFT calculations. The examined functionals show the similar accuracy as they do for the molecules containing light elements only except for bond lengths. LDA and OP86 produce good results for bond lengths and frequencies but bad bond energies. Different functionals do not show much different performance for bond energies except LDA. BP86 and GP86 produce results with average accuracy while LYP does not perform well. Although encouraging results are obtained with functional B97GGA-1, other heavily parameterized and meta-GGA functionals do not produce impressive results.  相似文献

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computations are performed for 42 organic molecules and three transition metal complexes, with experimental molar optical rotations ranging from 2 to 2 × 10(4) deg cm(2) dmol(-1). The performances of the global hybrid functionals B3LYP, PBE0, and BHLYP, and of the range-separated functionals CAM-B3LYP and LC-PBE0 (the latter being fully long-range corrected), are investigated. The performance of different basis sets is studied. When compared to liquid-phase experimental data, the range-separated functionals do, on average, not perform better than B3LYP and PBE0. Median relative deviations between calculations and experiment range from 25 to 29%. A basis set recently proposed for optical rotation calculations (LPol-ds) on average does not give improved results compared to aug-cc-pVDZ in TDDFT calculations with B3LYP. Individual cases are discussed in some detail, among them norbornenone for which the LC-PBE0 functional produced an optical rotation that is close to available data from coupled-cluster calculations, but significantly smaller in magnitude than the liquid-phase experimental value. Range-separated functionals and BHLYP perform well for helicenes and helicene derivatives. Metal complexes pose a challenge to first-principles calculations of optical rotation.  相似文献

Computational modeling of the enzymatic activity of B12-dependent enzymes requires a detailed understanding of the factors that influence the strength of the Co--C bond and the limits associated with a particular level of theory. To address this issue, a systematic analysis of the electronic and structural properties of coenzyme B12 models has been performed to establish the performance of three different functionals including B3LYP, BP86, and revPBE. In particular the cobalt-carbon bond dissociation energies, axial bond lengths, and selected stretching frequencies have been analyzed in detail. Current analysis shows that widely used B3LYP functional significantly underestimates the strength of the Co--C bond while the nonhybrid BP86 functional produces very consistent results in comparison to experimental data. To explain such different performance of these functionals molecular orbital analysis associated with axial bonds has been performed to show differences in axial bonding provided by hybrid and nonhybrid functionals.  相似文献

The accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) limits predictions in theoretical catalysis, and strong chemical bonds between transition metals and oxygen pose a particular challenge. We benchmarked 30 diverse density functionals against the bond dissociation enthalpies (BDE) of the 30 MO and 30 MO+ diatomic systems of all the 3d, 4d, and 5d metals, to test universality across the d-block as required in comparative studies. Seven functionals, B98, B97-1, B3P86, B2PLYP, TPSSh, B3LYP, and B97-2, display mean absolute errors (MAE) <30 kJ/mol. In contrast, many commonly used functionals such as PBE and RPBE overestimate M−O bonding by +30 kJ/mol and display MAEs from 48–76 kJ/mol. RPBE and OPBE reduce the over-binding of PBE but remain very inaccurate. We identify a linear relationship (p-value 7.6 ⋅ 10−5) between the precision and accuracy of DFT, i. e. inaccurate functionals tend to produce larger, unpredictable random errors. Some functionals commonly deviate from this relationship: Thus, M06-2X is very precise but not very accurate, whereas B3LYP* and MN15-L are more accurate but less precise than M06-2X. The best-performing hybrids have 10–30 % HF exchange, but this can be relieved by double hybrids (B2PLYP). Most functionals describe trends well, but errors comparing 5d to 4d/3d are ∼10 kJ/mol larger than group-wise errors, due to uncertainties in the spin-orbit coupling corrections for effective core potentials, affecting e. g. Pt/Pd or Au/Ag comparisons.  相似文献

In this paper, the results are presented from a comparative study of the electronic and geometric structure of copper corroles by means of either density functional theory (DFT, using both pure and hybrid functionals) and multiconfigurational ab initio methods, starting from either a complete active space (CASSCF) or restricted active space (RASSCF) reference wave function and including dynamic correlation by means of second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2/RASPT2). DFT geometry optimizations were performed for the lowest singlet and triplet states of copper corrole, both unsubstituted and meso-substituted with three phenyl groups. The effect of saddling on the electronic structure was investigated by comparing the results obtained for planar (C(2v)) and saddled (C(2)) structures. With DFT, the origin of the saddling distortion is found to be dependent on the applied functional: covalent Cu 3d-corrole π interactions with pure functionals (BP86, OLYP), antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between an electron in the corrolate (C(2)) b type π orbital, and an unpaired Cu(II) 3d electron with hybrid functionals (B3LYP, PBE0). The CASPT2 results essentially confirm the suggestion from the hybrid functionals that copper corroles are noninnocent, although the contribution of diradical character to the copper-corrole bond is found to be limited to 50% or less. The lowest triplet state is calculated at 0-10 kcal/mol and conform with the experimental observation (variable temperature NMR) that this state should be thermally accessible.  相似文献

The accuracy of predicted hydrogen binding energies and equilibrium structures for a benchmark set of molecules is compared for some recently developed density functionals, Becke's three parameter hybrid method with the Lee, Yang, and Parr (LYP) correlation functional (B3LYP), Becke's half and half functional combined with the LYP correlation functional (BHLYP), Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof functional (PBE), Van Voorhis, Scuseria exchange correlation functional (VSXC), the hybrid Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof functional (PBE1PBE), and meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA). Overall, the hybrid functionals which contain a portion of Hartree–Fock exchange (B3LYP, BHLYP, and PBE1PBE) yield the most accurate results. The kinetic-energy-density-dependent functionals, VSXC and meta-GGA, are significantly less accurate. Received: 10 December 1999 / Accepted: 5 March 2000 / Published online: 21 June 2000  相似文献

The origin of the diradical character dependence of the second hyperpolarizability (gamma) of neutral singlet diradical systems is clarified based on the perturbation formula of gamma using the simplest diradical molecular model with different diradical characters, i.e., H2 under bond dissociation. The enhancement of gamma in the intermediate diradical character region turns out to originate from the increasing magnitude of the transition moment between the first and second excited states and the decrease of that between the ground and first excited states, respectively, with the increase in diradical character. This feature confirms that open-shell singlet conjugated molecules with intermediate diradical characters constitute a new class of third-order nonlinear optical systems, whose gamma values can be controlled by the diradical character in addition to the conjugation length.  相似文献

This article investigates the performance of five commonly used density functionals, B3LYP, BP86, PBE0, PBE, and BLYP, for studying diatomic molecules consisting of a first row transition metal bonded to H, F, Cl, Br, N, C, O, or S. Results have been compared with experiment wherever possible. Open-shell configurations are found more often in the order PBE0>B3LYP>PBE approximately BP86>BLYP. However, on average, 58 of 63 spins are correctly predicted by any functional, with only small differences. BP86 and PBE are slightly better for obtaining geometries, with errors of only 0.020 A. Hybrid functionals tend to overestimate bond lengths by a few picometers and underestimate bond strengths by favoring open shells. Nonhybrid functionals usually overestimate bond energies. All functionals exhibit similar errors in bond energies, between 42 and 53 kJmol. Late transition metals are found to be better modeled by hybrid functionals, whereas nonhybrid functionals tend to have less of a preference. There are systematic errors in predicting certain properties that could be remedied. BLYP performs the best for ionization potentials studied here, PBE0 the worst. In other cases, errors are similar. Finally, there is a clear tendency for hybrid functionals to give larger dipole moments than nonhybrid functionals. These observations may be helpful in choosing and improving existing functionals for tasks involving transition metals, and for designing new, improved functionals.  相似文献
