The ℒ p spaces     
The ℒ p spaces which were introduced by A. Pełczyński and the first named author are studied. It is proved, e.g., that (i)X is an ℒ p space if and only ifX* is and ℒ q space (p −1+q −1=1). (ii) A complemented subspace of an ℒ p space is either an ℒ p or an ℒ2 space. (iii) The ℒ p spaces have sufficiently many Boolean algebras of projections. These results are applied to show thatX is an ℒ (resp. ℒ1) space if and only ifX admits extensions (resp. liftings) of compact operators havingX as a domain or range space. We also prove a theorem on the “local reflexivity” of an arbitrary Banach space. This research was partially supported by NSF Grant# 8964.  相似文献

Because of Lin's example [L], the hypothesis onxX is the best possible. If the hypothesisJ −1(Jx)={x} is not verified, we can prove that ifJx is a singleton and ifJ −1(Jx) is weakly compact, then if |<T t x, f>|→1, whent→+∞ for somefX *, ‖f‖≤1, there existsyJ −1(Jx) such thaty is an eigenvector of the generatorA, associated with a purely imaginary eigenvalue. A sufficient condition is given when a subspaceLL 1(μ,X) of the space of Bochner integrable function, defined on a finite and positive measure space (S, Φ, μ) with values in a Banach spaceX, is locally uniformly convex renormable in terms of the integrable evaluations {∫ A fdμ;f∈L}. This shows the lifting property thatL 1(μ,X) is renormable if and only ifX is, and indicates a large class of renormable subspaces even ifX does not admit and equivalent locally uniformly convex norm.  相似文献

A connected, finite two-dimensional CW-complex with fundamental group isomorphic toG is called a [G, 2] f -complex. LetL⊲G be a normal subgroup ofG. L has weightk if and only ifk is the smallest integer such that there exists {l 1,…,l k}⊆L such thatL is the normal closure inG of {l 1,…,l k}. We prove that a [G, 2] f -complexX may be embedded as a subcomplex of an aspherical complexY=X∪{e 1 2 ,…,e k 2 } if and only ifG has a normal subgroupL of weightk such thatH=G/L is at most two-dimensional and defG=defH+k. Also, ifX is anon-aspherical [G, 2] f -subcomplex of an aspherical 2-complex, then there exists a non-trivial superperfect normal subgroupP such thatG/P has cohomological dimension ≤2. Given 1≦p<∞ and a real Banach spaceX, we define thep-absolutely summing constantμ p(X) as inf{Σ i =1/m |x*(x i)|p p Σ i =1/mx ip p]1 p}, where the supremum ranges over {x*∈X*; ‖x*‖≤1} and the infimum is taken over all sets {x 1,x 2, …,x m} ⊂X such that Σ i =1/mx i‖>0. It follows immediately from [2] thatμ p(X)>0 if and only ifX is finite dimensional. In this paper we find the exact values ofμ p(X) for various spaces, and obtain some asymptotic estimates ofμ p(X) for general finite dimensional Banach spaces. In this paper we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the crossed productR *G to be prime or semiprime under the assumption thatR is prime. The main techniques used are the Δ-methods which reduce these questions to the finite normal subgroups ofG and a study of theX-inner automorphisms ofR which enables us to handle these finite groups. In particular we show thatR *G is semiprime ifR has characteristic 0. Furthermore, ifR has characteristicp>0, thenR *G is semiprime if and only ifR *P is semiprime for all elementary abelianp-subgroupsP of Δ+(G) ∩G inn.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Israel J. Math.28 (1977), 313–324), it was shown that for a certain class of cardinals τ,l 1(τ) embeds in a Banach spaceX if and only ifL 1([0, 1]τ) embeds inX *. An extension (to a rather wider class of cardinals) of the basic lemma of that paper is here applied so as to yield an affirmative answer to a question posed by Rosenthal concerning dual ℒ1-spaces. It is shown that ifZ * is a dual Banach space, isomorphic to a complemented subspace of anL 1-space, and κ is the density character ofZ *, thenl 1(κ) embeds inZ *. A corollary of this result is that every injective bidual Banach space is isomorphic tol (κ) for some κ. The second part of this article is devoted to an example, constructed using the continuum hypothesis, of a compact spaceS which carries a homogeneous measure of type ω1, but which is such thatl 11) does not embed in ℰ(S). This shows that the main theorem of the already mentioned paper is not valid in the case τ = ω1. The dual space ℰ(S)* is isometric to , and is a member of a new isomorphism class of dualL 1-spaces.  相似文献

It is proved that ifX is a connected locally continuumwise connected coanalytic nowhere topologically complete space, then the hyperspace 2 X of all nonempty compact subsets ofX is strongly universal in the class of all coanalytic spaces. Moreover, 2 X is homeomorphic to Π2 ifX is a Baire space, and toQ∖Π1 ifX contains a dense absoluteG δ-setGX such that the intersectionGU is connected for any open connectedUX. Given anm-accretive operatorA in a Banach spaceX and an upper semicontinuous multivalued mapF: [0,aX→2 X , we consider the initial value problemu′∈−Au+F(t,u) on [0,a],u(0)=x 0. We concentrate on the case when the semigroup generated by—A is only equicontinuous and obtain existence of integral solutions if, in particular,X* is uniformly convex andF satisfies β(F(t,B))k(t)β(B) for all boundedBX wherekL 1([0,a]) and β denotes the Hausdorff-measure of noncompactness. Moreover, we show that the set of all solutions is a compactR δ-set in this situation. In general, the extra condition onX* is essential as we show by an example in whichX is not uniformly smooth and the set of all solutions is not compact, but it can be omited ifA is single-valued and continuous or—A generates aC o-semigroup of bounded linear operators. In the simpler case when—A generates a compact semigroup, we give a short proof of existence of solutions, again ifX* is uniformly (or strictly) convex. In this situation we also provide a counter-example in ℝ4 in which no integral solution exists. Iff:XX* is a homeomorphism of a metric separable spaceX into a compact metric spaceX* such thatf(X)=X*, then the pair (f,X*) is called a metric compactification ofX. An absoluteG δ-space (F σ-space)X is said to be of the first kind, if there exists a metric compactification (f,X*) ofX such that , whereG i are sets open inX* and dim[Fr(G i)]<dimX. (Fr(G i) being the boundary ofG i and dimX — the dimension ofX). An absoluteG δ-space (F σ-space), which is not of the first kind, is said to be of the second kind. In the present paper spaces which are both absoluteG δ andF σ-spaces of the second kind are constructed for any positive finite dimension, a problem related to one of A. Lelek in [11] is solved, and a sufficient condition onX is given under which dim [X* −f(X)]≧k, for any metric compactification (f,X*) ofX, wherek≦dimX is a given number. For any unit vectorx inX and any (C 0) contraction semigroup (T t ) t>0 onX, Baillon and Guerre-Delabriere proved that ifX is a smooth reflexive Banach space and if there isx *J(x) such that ÷〈(T(t)x, J(x)〈÷→1 ast→∞, then there is a unit vectoryX which is an eigenvector of the generatorA of (T t ) t>0 associated with a purely imaginary eigenvalue. We prove versions of James' weak compactness theorem for polynomials and symmetric multilinear forms of finite type. We also show that a Banach spaceX is reflexive if and only if it admits and equivalent norm such that there existsx 0≠0 inX and a weak-*-open subsetA of the dual space, satisfying thatx *x 0 attains its numerical radius. for eachx * inA. LetC denote the Banach space of scalar-valued continuous functions defined on the closed unit interval. It is proved that ifX is a Banach space andT:C→X is a bounded linear operator withT * X * non-separable, then there is a subspaceY ofC, isometric toC, such thatT|Y is an isomorphism. An immediate consequence of this and a result of A. Pelczynski, is that every complemented subspace ofC with non-separable dual is isomorphic (linearly homeomorphic) toC.
