The phenomenon of adsorption of solid particles at fluid interfaces to stabilize emulsions or foams have been known for more than a century. Today, particle-stabilized emulsions, often referred to as Pickering emulsions, are receiving growing attention as they are encountered in oil recovery and have long been used in personal care products and food industry. Over the past 10 years the focus of the Pickering emulsion has also increasingly shifted to biomedical applications with thanks to novel syntheses of a wide range of biocompatible particle stabilizers. Here, a brief overview of the development of biocompatible particles is given for Pickering emulsion stabilization, including alginate, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), and protein-based particles. The materials prepared by templating from emulsion stabilized with biocompatible particles include colloidal capsules and hierarchically porous materials. It is hoped that the understanding gained from the recent intense activity in the field will enable more researchers to modify existing materials and design new formulations, which would be beneficial for exploring more biological applications.  相似文献

Self-assembly of latex particles for colloidal crystals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Self-assembly of latex particles is of great importance for fabricating various functional colloidal crystals. In this paper, we review recent research on the self-assembly of latex particles for colloidal crystals, covering the assembly forces and various assembly approaches of latex particles, including self-assembly by gravity sedimentation, vertical deposition, physical confinement, electric field, and magnetic field. Furthermore, some simple methods for assembling latex particles such as spin coating, spray coating, and printing are also summarized.  相似文献

A procedure for predicting thermodynamic, dynamic, and rheological properties of polymerically stabilized colloidal dispersions in good solvents by mapping onto an effective hard sphere dispersion is investigated and evaluated for its range of applicability. Configurational pressures and energies, calculted by Monte Carlo simulations, are used to assess the model's accuracy for predicting thermodynamic data. Similarly, long-time self-diffusivities, calculated by equilibrium Brownian Dynamic simulations, are used to assess the model's feasibility for predicting dynamic properties. Finally, zero shear viscosities are calculated by the method of hydrodynamic preaveraging and compared to rheological measurements. The various testing methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the procedure and suggest the model's range of applicability. Received: 13 March 2000 Accepted: 28 June 2000  相似文献

The effect of nanometer sized silica particles (R16 nm) on the flow-induced morphology of immiscible polymer blends is studied. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyisobutylene (PIB) are chosen as model components. A stable droplet/matrix microstructure is obtained for blends of 30% PIB in 70% PDMS or vice versa. Rheological measurements are used to show that the silica particles alter the sensitivity of the of dispersed phase/matrix microstructure to shear flow. Coalescence is suppressed or at least slowed down on a practical time scale, especially when PDMS is the matrix phase. The effect of mixing conditions, pre-shear rate and particle concentration on the blend morphology are studied. Cryo-SEM is used to observe the accumulation of the particles at the interface. Blends stabilized by solid particles could provide an interesting alternative to blends compatibilized by block-copolymers.This paper was presented at the first Annual European Rheology Conference (AERC) held in Guimarães, Portugal, September 11-13, 2003.  相似文献

We consider the effects of 2.7-μm-diameter hydrophobic silica particles added to droplet–matrix blends of polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polyisobutylene (PIB). The particles adsorb on the surface of the PEO drops but protrude considerably into the PIB phase. Hence, it is possible for a single particle to adsorb onto two PEO drops simultaneously. Such particles are called “bridging” particles, and they the glue drops into noncoalescing clusters. Flow visualization studies show that shearing the sample promotes bridging-induced clustering of drops and that the structure of the clusters depends on the shear rate. Rheologically, the most significant consequence of bridging-induced drop clustering appears to be a plateau in G′ at low frequencies characteristic of gel-like behavior. The gel-like behavior develops fully after shearing the sample, and the kinetics of gel formation are faster with increasing shear stress or increasing drop volume fraction. The gel-like behavior suggests that the bridging-induced drop clusters form a weak network. Apart from particle bridging, optical microscopy also reveals that particles can organize into a hexagonal lattice on the drops’ surfaces, a phenomenon that has only been noted in aqueous systems previously. Finally, rheology and flow visualization both suggest that particles promote coalescence of drops. This is surprising in light of much past research that shows that particles that are preferentially wetted by the continuous phase generally hinder coalescence in droplet–matrix systems.  相似文献

This paper presents a new approach for the detection and treatment of colloidal particle collisions. It has been developed in the framework of Lagrangian approaches where a large number of particles is explicitly tracked. The key idea is to account for the continuous trajectories of both colliding partners during a time step that is not restricted. Unlike classical approaches which consider only the distances between a pair of particles at the beginning and at the end of each time step (or assume straight-line motion in between), we model the whole relative, and possibly diffusive, trajectory. The collision event is dealt with using the probability that the relative distance reaches a minimum threshold (equal to the sum of the two particle radii). In that sense, the present paper builds on the idea of a previous work. However, in this first work, the collision event was simulated with a simplified scheme where one of the collision partners was removed and re-inserted randomly within the simulation domain. Though usually applied, this treatment is limited to homogeneous situations. Here, an extension of the stochastic model is proposed to treat more rigorously the collision event via a suitable evaluation of the time and spatial location of the collision and an adequate calculation of subsequent particle motion. The resulting collision kernels are successfully compared to theoretical predictions in the case of particle diffusive motion. With these promising results, the feasibility of simulating the collisional regime over a whole range of particle sizes (even nanoscopic) and time steps (from a ballistic to a purely diffusive regime) with a numerical method of reasonable computational cost has been confirmed. The present approach thus appears as a good candidate for the simulation of the agglomeration phenomenon between particles also in complex non-homogeneous flows.  相似文献

Rheology of polymer blends: linear model for viscoelastic emulsions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Kerner's model for flow of composite elastic media is extended to an emulsion of viscoelastic phases with interfacial tension undergoing deformations of small amplitude. A privileged internal structure inside the suspended drops is discussed in terms of fluid circulation across the interface. It is shown that for usual drop radius and interfacial tension values of emulsions, the rheological behavior predicted by the model, with very simple expression for the complex shear modulus, is quantitatively similar to that predicted by Palierne's model. Predictions of the model are compared with experimental data obtained on a polystyrene/polyethylene blend sheared in a small-amplitude oscillatory mode. Froth flotation is a separation process which plays a major role in the mining industry. It is essentially employed to recover a vast array of different valuable commodities such as rare earth minerals essential to the manufacture of high-tech products. Owing to its simplicity, the process is also widely used for the de-inking of recycled paper fibres and for the removal of pollutants from waste water. The flotation process essentially relies on the attachment of solid particles on the surface of gas bubbles immersed in water. The present study seeks to investigate the effect of the particle shape on the attachment mechanism. Using an in-house optical micro-bubble sensor the approach, the sliding and the adhesion of micron milled glass fibres on the surface of a stationary air bubble immersed in stagnant water is thoroughly investigated. The translational and rotational velocities were measured for fibres of various aspect ratios. The results are compared with a theoretical model and with experimental data obtained with spherical glass beads. It is found that the fibre orientation during the sliding motion largely depends on the collision area. Upon collision near the upstream pole of the gas bubble the major axis of the fibre aligns with the local bubble surface (tangential fibre alignment). If collision occurs at least 30° further downstream only head of the fibre is in contact with the gas–liquid interface (radial fibre alignment).  相似文献

The sedimentation of N?1 small arbitrarily-shaped solid bodies near a solid plane is addressed by discarding inertial effects and using 6N boundary-integral equations. Numerical results for 2 or 3 identical spheres reveal that combined wall–particle and particle–particle interactions deeply depend on the cluster's geometry and distance to the wall and may even cancel for a sphere which then moves as it were isolated. A new implementation of the conventional three-dimensional boundary-integral formulation for deformable drops in a viscous medium at low Reynolds numbers is presented. We describe a scheme to generate concentrated emulsions and a numerical procedure for computing interactions among deformable drops. Direct numerical simulations are used to describe the expansion of an ordered emulsion at dispersed-phase volume fraction up to 0.98. We also study the viscoelastic response of a monodisperse emulsion which have been concentrated up to 0.68. The results have demonstrated the feasibility of simulating high-volume fraction emulsions, and the method can readily be extended to explore three-dimensional foam problems.  相似文献

Analytical solutions for the displacement and stress fields due to a misfit particle in a host matrix can be difficult to obtain, especially for complex particle geometries. In this work, we present a numerical method for finding such fields in the case of infinitely-long particles. The method is based on discretizing the continuous misfit region between the particle and matrix into local misfit regions consisting of interstitial dislocation loops. The results presented here indicate very good agreement with analytical solutions and better convergence with increasing loop density.  相似文献

The aggregation behavior of submicron-sized particles of praseodymium-doped zirconium silicate, a ceramic pigment, in aqueous suspension was predicted by a modified population balance model. In the model, the collision frequencies were selected to describe evolution of the particle size distribution of the suspension. The collision efficiency was estimated as a function of interaction potential between particles based on Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek theory. The population balance model was modified to predict the stable state of the aggregation by introducing the volume mean size of aggregate to stability ratio. In addition, aggregation of the particles in aqueous suspension in the presence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate or potassium chloride was experimentally investigated. The predicted data (i.e., the final aggregate size, aggregation rate, and particle size distribution) were similar to the experimental results.  相似文献

The dynamics of particles in multi-phase jets has been widely studied due to its importance for a broad range of practical applications. The present work describes an experimental investigation on an initially non-dilute two-phase jet, aimed at improving the understanding in this field. A two-color PDPA has been employed to measure simultaneously the velocity and size of particles. The measurements are post-processed to check the reliability of the results and to derive information on particle volume flux as an indication of their concentration. Acoustic forcing is applied in order to control coherent structures, which are responsible for mixing and transport phenomena, and also to get phase-locked measurements. Phase-averaged statistics enabled to freeze the jet structure, not visible in the time-averaged data. The results along the jet centerline confirm that drag forces and the spread angle of the jet initially control particle dispersion, very near the nozzle exit (x/D < 4). However, as the vortical structures evolve forming tongue-shaped structures, the total particle volume flux is augmented when these structures connect with the main stream (x/D > 5). This is due to an increase of the number of smaller size particles, even when a decrease of the number of larger size particle is observed. Further analysis at five cross-stream sections across two consecutive vortices confirm that small particles are convected around the coherent structure and then incorporated to the main stream, increasing the particle concentration at the jet core. On the other hand, the number of larger particles (as well as their contribution to axial volume flux) starts to decay in regions of high azymuthal vorticity. This behaviour is partly ascribed to the transversal lift force, associated to the large spatial gradients observed in these regions. Saffman and Magnus forces have been estimated to be comparable or even greater than radial drag forces. The results suggest that the Saffman force might accelerate particles in radial direction, inducing a high radial volumetric flow rate from high to low axial velocity regions.  相似文献

Understanding and predicting the hydrodynamic loading experienced by a solid body during water impact is critical for researchers and practitioners in naval engineering. While two-dimensional (2D) water entry problems have been extensively investigated, experimental data on 3D fluid–structure interactions during water impact are rather limited. Here, particle image velocimetry (PIV) is utilized to study the free fall vertical impact of a solid body, modeling a ship hull, on an otherwise quiescent fluid. Planar PIV is used to measure the velocity field on multiple cross-sections along the length and width of the model. These data are combined to infer the 3D velocity field in the entire fluid. The 3D velocity field is then utilized to reconstruct the pressure field by integrating the incompressible 3D Navier–Stokes equations in a time-varying domain, where both the free surface and the fluid–solid interface evolve in time. By evaluating the pressure field on the wetted surface of the model, we estimate the hydrodynamic loading during water entry. Experimental results demonstrate the central role of 3D effects on both the flow physics and the hydrodynamic loading. As the cross-sectional velocity decreases away from the mid-span, we observe a robust increase in the axial velocity component. This translates into a complex spatio-temporal dependence of the hydrodynamic loading, which is initially maximized in the vicinity of the pile-up and later increases toward the keel. Due to the deceleration of the model during the impact and the increase in the wetted surface, the hydrodynamic loading close to the mid-span in the early stage of the impact is considerably larger than the ends. The 3D flow physics is used to study the energy imparted to the fluid during the impact, which we find to be mostly transferred to the risen water, consisting of the pile-up region and the spray jet. Our methodology can be implemented for the analysis of other solid bodies with multiple geometric curvatures, and our experimental results can be utilized for the validation of 3D mathematical models of water entry.  相似文献
