Due to the tiny shift in order of optical wavelength for Goos-Hǎnchen (GH) shift, it is very difficult to directly measure and apply the GH shift. We develop a new method for enhancing GH shift of both TE and TM polarized waves. The method is based on a total reflection prism made of BK9 glass combined with a precise measurement of the resulting spatial displacement with a one-dimensional charge coupled device (CCD). Measurements are performed to examine the validity of the method. Experimental and theoretical results indicate the feasibility of the method with an enhancement in optical wavelenghth shift at millimetre scale. The method is advantageous to application the GH shift in the optical domain, and is also meaningful for measuring even smaller changes in the refractive index of a liquid.  相似文献

In this Letter, we investigate giant and negative bistable lateral shifts for a light beam transmitted through a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing a nonlinear metamaterial defect. It is shown that there exists a typical S-shaped curve of the normalized input-output intensity. The hysteresis of lateral shift, resulting from the reshaping effect (constructive and destructive interferences of each plane wave components undergoing different phase shifts) is dependent on the nonlinear defect, the incident intensity and incidence angle. Numerical simulations are also made for the validity of stationary phase approach. All these phenomena lead to potential applications in integrated optics and optical switches.  相似文献

It is theoretically shown that the simultaneously large positive and negative lateral displacements will appear when the resonant condition is satisfied for a TE-polarized light beam reflected from the total internal reflection configuration with a weakly absorbing dielectric film. Appearance of the enhanced negative lateral displacement is relative to the incidence angle, absorption of the thin film and its thickness. If we select an appropriate weakly absorbing dielectric film and its thickness, the simultaneously enhanced positive and negative lateral displacements will appear at different resonant angles. These phenomena may lead to convenient measurements and interesting applications in optical devices.  相似文献

It is theoretically proven that the transmitted Goos-Hiinchen (GH) displacement in the symmetry-double prism could be resonantly enhanced when the incident angle is less than but near the critical angle, and is modulated by the slab thickness between two prisms and the incident angle. This enhancement effect is directly observed in microwave experiments in which the incident angle is properly chosen. The measured data are in good agreement with the result of the numerical simulation.  相似文献

We report simultaneously large and opposite Goos-Hanchen shifts for TE and TM beams on a double metalcladding slab. Theoretical examination shows that both positive and negative lateral shifts are in two orders of the wavelength. It is also found that the magnitude of the lateral beam shift strongly depends on the thickness of the upper metal layer. The optimal thickness of the upper metal layer for zero reflection is found to be the critical thickness above which a negative beam shift occurs. Numerical calculations are in good agreement with the theoretical results.  相似文献

The lateral shift of a light beam at the surface of an anisotropic metamaterial (AMM) slab backed by a metal is investigated. Analytical expressions of the lateral shifts are derived using the stationary-phase method, in the case that total reflection does and does not occur at the first interface. The sign of the lateral shift in two situations is discussed, and the necessary conditions for the lateral shift to be positive or negative are given. It is shown that the thickness and physical parameters of the AMM slab and the incident angle of the light beam strongly affect the properties of the lateral shift. Numerical results validate these conclusions. The lossy effect of the metamaterial on the lateral shift is also investigated.  相似文献

It is shown that after reflection from a lossy medium the s- or p-polarized paraxial light beam carrying the orbital angular momentum suffers the 2D shift of the beam's centre of gravity relative the geometric optic axis. The direction as well as the length of the 2D vector, which describes the shift, change smoothly with the change of the angle of incidence.  相似文献

When light is incident on a nonplanar metal surface, an oscillating dipole is excited at the entrance openings. We show that the enhanced transmission assisted with surface plasmon (SP) through a perforated metal film results from two different SP resonances effects: (i) zero-order Fabry-Perot resonance effect where each air hole can be considered as a section of metallic waveguide, forming a low-quality-factor resonator, and many dipoles are arranged inside the nanoholes region; and (ii) structure-factor-induced charges self-tunnelling effect due to the well-recognized surface structure periodicity, where the positive or negative charges can respectively tunnel into the right surface through the metal walls. Furthermore, when light transmits through the double-layer perforated metal films, the different transport behaviors are also clearly shown, which convinces the existence of dual SP resonances effect.  相似文献

A method to measure the refractive index for high reflectance materials in the terahertz range with terahertz time domain reflection spectroscopy is proposed. In this method, the THz waveforms reflected by a silicon wafer and high reflectance sample are measured respectively. The refractive index of the silicon wafer, measured with the THz time domain transmission spectroscopy, is used as a reference in the THz time domain reflective spectroscopy. Therefore, the complex refractive index of the sample can be obtained by resorting to the known reflective index of the silicon and the Fresnel law. To improve the accuracy of the phase shift, the Kramers-Kronig transform is adopted. This method is also verified by the index of the silicon in THz reflection spectroscopy. The bulk metal plates have been taken as the sample, and the experimentally obtained metallic refractive indexes are compared with the simple Drude model.  相似文献

A theoretical model, based on the Fresnel diffraction integral, is developed to describe the thermal lens (TL) signal in a mode-mismatched collinear configuration, which is optimized for a near field detection scheme and excitation by a cw modulated laser beam with a top-hat profile. The TL amplitudes obtained with both top-hat and Gaussian beam excitations are numerically computed and compared, and the dependence of the TL amplitude on the experimental parameters is discussed. Numerical results show that the top-hat beam TL instrument is more sensitive than the Gaussian beam TL instrument, with a potential doubling of the sensitivity. The use of the top-hat beam excitation with TL detection is a significant improvement because a top-hat beam can be easily obtained with a low-cost, wide-spectral emission white-light source. The use of incoherent light sources as the excitation sources would substantially expand the applicability of the TL technique to the general area of chemical analysis.This revised version was published online in March 2005. We study pulse propagation across a boundary that separates an ordinary medium from a medium with simultaneously negative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. Solving Maxwell’s equations with two spatial coordinates (one longitudinal, one transverse) and time we find negative refraction as the wave packet undergoes significant and unusual shape distortions. The pulse acquires and maintains a chirp as it traverses the interface, as expected, but with a sign that is opposite to the chirp attained upon traversal into a positive-index material. Both a direct calculation of the spatial derivative of the instantaneous, local phase of the pulse and a Fourier analysis of the signal reveal the same inescapable fact: that inside a negative-index material, a transmitted, forward-moving wave packet is indeed a superposition of purely negative wave vectors. The central findings of this paper are a confirmation that causality is not violated in the short-pulse regime, and that energy and group velocities never exceed the speed of light in vacuum.  相似文献

The Goos-Hänchen displacement of a light beam transmitting through an indefinite metamaterial slab is studied. The results indicate that the displacement would be negative or positive for different parameters, and the necessary conditions for negative or positive displacements are summarized. Due to the special anisotropic properties, the directions of displacements for different polarization beams are opposite by proper design. In addition, the simultaneously enhanced positive and negative displacements will appear at different resonant angles under consideration of the active slab. Based on Kukhtarev's equations, we derive the formulae of intensity-coupling coefficient, the phase-coupling coefficient and the group velocity at large modulation depth. It is theoretically shown that the signal beam can be amplified after passing through the photorefractive crystal and the group velocity reduced to m/s, even cm/s. Meanwhile, we also analyse the influence of the thermal excitation rate and the large signal effects on optical amplification and reduction of light propagation in photorefractive two-wave mixing.  相似文献

High-index contrast photonic crystals possess an intricate photonic band structure that is responsible for surprising phenomena as the surperprism effect, self-collimation, power splitting or negative refraction. Recently, it was reported that at the interface between an isotropic medium and a uniaxial crystal (or between two uniaxial crystals) a phenomenon known as amphoteric refraction, that is, positive as well as negative refraction, can take place. By means of a equifrequency contours analysis and finite-difference time-domain simulations, we show that a two dimensional photonic crystal can also present amphoteric refraction by properly choosing the lattice orientation and the termination. However, total transmission is difficult to achieve because a Bloch mode is excited inside the photonic crystal and the coupling efficiency from this mode to an external plane wave is lower than one.  相似文献

Single-mode backward wave is shown to be guided in a planar dielectric waveguide with a strong chiral core. The significant difference of such a waveguide from the traditional one is the guidance of single-mode backward wave, without using negative permittivity and/or negative permeability. In the design, we generalize the idea of total internal reflection to the chiral medium and make a numerical analysis on the reflection with oblique incidence. We deduce rigorously a general solution of incident wave on the boundary of two arbitrary chiral magneto-electric media. We observe that the impedance matching can eliminate the coupling between two eigenwaves in chiral media. With strong chiral core and the matched impedance with cladding, one eigenwave becomes a backward wave and can be guided without transferring to the other eigenwave. If a single-mode propagation condition is satisfied, we will get single-mode backward guided wave. A special interface has been designed to prevent the forward wave entering the waveguide from the source.  相似文献

We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation resulting from the steep change of the refractive index by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fibre. The largest delay is measured to be about 8.75ms corresponding to a group index of 1.312×10^6. The time delay or advancement depends on the pump intensity. Influences of the ion density on the fractional delay and the group velocity reduction of light propagation are studied. Based on our discussion the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity.  相似文献

We present a study of the properties of metamaterial consisting of multilayered nanofilms and numerically demonstrate the subwavelength imaging effect. We find that a point source placed in the vicinity of the structure can form an image in the opposite side of the slab, even when the permittivity of metal and dielectric materials is not matched. When light is incident obliquely on the interface, the intensity of transmitted field is smaller than the one when light is incident upon the structure, and the image becomes blurred. This structure verifies that the multilayered metallodielectric structure can act as optical hyperlens.  相似文献

We present a precise data processing method, in the Z-scan experiments using a Gaussian beam and trimmed Airy beam, for directly extracting nonlinear refraction from the closed aperture Z-scan trace with the aid of the open aperture Z-scan trace when the materials exhibit nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption simultaneously. This method is still applicable when the nonlinear absorption is dominant and the closed aperture Z-scan curve degenerates into a single valley configuration, which is a salient advantage over other methods. In addition, we give gracefully empirical formulas with very high precision, which have good practicability for characterizing the optical nonlinearities of materials by use of the Gaussian beam and trimmed Airy beam Z-scan technique, respectively.  相似文献

A chiral molecular model of three coupled oscillators is established. A set of coupling equations and hyperpolarizabilities for the chiral molecules with the tripod structure are presented. The expression of second-order nonlinear susceptibility is derived for an isotropic molecular system. The calculated hyperpolarizabilities o[ NPAN and NPP chiral molecules are consistent with the experimental results and the applicability of this model is validated.  相似文献
