A novel ionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with a series of enamines (1) in the presence of methylaluminum bis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide) (2) was examined. Both nucleophile (1) and electrophile (2) are indispensable for the present polymerization, in which (1) acts as initiator and (2) as activator. MMA polymerization proceeded smoothly in toluene at or below room temperature (r.t.) in the presence of 1 and 2 (1 ∼ 4 mol %, respectively), went to completion within 1 h, and afforded syndiotactic-rich PMMA with molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) in the 1.1 ∼ 1.4 range. The number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the polymer was significantly higher than that calculated from the feed ratio of 1 to the monomer, indicating low initiating efficiency. Kinetic studies coupled with isolation of an intermediate species proved that the real monomeric species involved in both initiation and propagation was a complex of MMA with 2. The effects of the concentrations of 1, 2, and MMA as well as the temperature of polymerization were also examined. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In this report, a method based on the redox-initiated polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) has been developed for the rapid fabrication of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microfluidic chips. MMA containing 2-2'-azo-bis-isobutyronitrile was allowed to prepolymerize in a water bath to form a viscous prepolymer solution that was subsequently mixed with MMA containing a redox-initiation couple of benzoyl peroxide/N,N-dimethylaniline. The dense molding solution was sandwiched between a silicon template and a piece of 1-mm-thick PMMA plate. The polymerization could complete within 50 min under ambient temperature. The images of raised microfluidic structures on the silicon template were precisely replicated into the synthesized PMMA substrate during the redox-initiated polymerization of the molding solution. The chips were subsequently assembled by the thermal bonding of the channel plates and the covers. The new fabrication approach obviates the need for special equipment and significantly simplifies the process of fabricating PMMA microdevices. The attractive performance of the novel PMMA microchips has been demonstrated in connection with contactless conductivity detection for the separation and detection of ionic species.  相似文献

Nanoscale poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization. Different from particles made by traditional microemulsion polymerization, the particles prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization were multichain systems. PMMA samples, whether prepared by the traditional procedure or the modified procedure, had glass-transition temperatures (Tg's) greater than 120 °C and were rich in syndiotactic content (55–61% rr). After the samples were dissolved in CHCl3, there were decreases in the Tg values for the polymers prepared by the traditional procedure and those prepared by the modified process. However, a more evident Tg decrease was observed in the former than in the latter; still, for both, Tg was greater than 120 °C. Polarizing optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction indicated that some ordered regions formed in the particles prepared by modified microemulsion polymerization. The addition of a chain-transfer agent resulted in a decrease in both the syndiotacticity and Tg through decreasing polymer molecular weight. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The molecular weight distribution change has been measured for the photoresist poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] after in-vacuo exposure to monochromatic soft x-rays from the Canadian Synchrotron Radiation Facility [CSRF]. The experimental changes in the mo-lecular weight distribations derived from gel permeation chromatography [GPC], were compared to a simple Monte Carlo simulation model that assumes random main chain scission. Using this model a scission radiation chemical yield of G(S) = 1.28± 0.10 at room temperature was found to give the best fit at a photon energy of 621 eV. This value is similar to values reported previously in the literature using electron beam and γ-ray sources, but significantly larger than those reported for fast neutrons, α-particles, or energetically charged particles. It was found that in this soft x-ray energy regime, that degradation of PMMA involves primarily a random scission process of the main chain. The results of a least-squares fit of this soft x-ray G(S) data and all available literature values from other radiation sources, to the linear energy transfer [LET] dE/dx are discussed. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The evolution of molecular weight distributions (MWDs) with monomer conversion in the catalytic chain transfer (CCT) polymerization of methyl methacrylate at 60 °C is investigated by simulation (via the program package PREDICI®) and experiment. A Co(III)‐based complex is used as the precursor for the CCT agent, which is formed in situ by initiator‐derived (2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile) radicals to yield the catalytically active Co(II) species. The small shifts seen in the MWD toward lower molecular weights with increasing monomer conversion are shown to be of the same order of magnitude as the associated changes in the MWD in non‐CCT controlled free‐radical polymerization, indicating that no significant change in the MWD with monomer conversion is associated with the CCT process. These results are compared to the evolution of MWDs in conventional chain transfer polymerizations with thiols as transfer agents. A clear shift toward higher molecular weights is seen with increasing monomer conversion, indicating disparate rates of thiol and monomer consumption. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Nano-ZnO/poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) composite latex microspheres were synthesized by in-site emulsion polymerization. The interfacial compatibility between nano-ZnO particles and PMMA were improved by treating the surface of nano-ZnO particles hydrophobically using methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). TEM indicated that nano-ZnO particles present in nanosphere and have been encapsulated in the PMMA phase. FT-IR confirmed that MPTMS reacted with the nano-ZnO particle and copolymerized with MMA. It was clearly found from SEM that ZnO nanoparticles can be homogeneously dispersed in the PVC matrix. The absorbance spectrum of the nanocomposite polymer suggested that increasing the amount of nano-ZnO in composite particles could enhance the UV-shielding properties of the polymers. The nano-ZnO/PMMA composite particle could eliminate aggregation of ZnO nanoparticle and improve its compatibility with organic polymer. This means that the composite particles can be widely applied in lots of fields.  相似文献

The differential microemulsion polymerization technique was used to synthesize the nanoparticles of glycidyl-functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA via a two-step process, by which the amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant required was 1/217 of the monomer amount by weight and the surfactant/water ratio could be as low as 1/600. These surfactant levels are extremely low in comparison with those used in a conventional microemulsion polymerization system. The glycidyl-functionalized PMMA nanoparticles are composed of nanosized cores of high molecular weight PMMA and nano-thin shells of the random copolymer poly[(methyl methacrylate)-ran-(glycidyl methacrylate)]. The particle sizes were about 50 nm. The ratios of the glycidyl methacrylate in the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA were achieved at about 5–26 wt.%, depending on the reaction conditions. The molecular weight of glycidyl-functionalized PMMA was in the range of about 1 × 106 to 3 × 106 g mol−1. The solid content of glycidyl-functionalized PMMA increased when the amount of added glycidyl methacrylate was increased. The glycidyl-functionalized polymer on the surface of nano-seed PMMA nanoparticles was a random copolymer which was confirmed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The amounts of functionalization were investigated by the titration of the glycidyl functional group. The structure of the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA nanoparticles was investigated by means of TEM. The glycidyl-functionalized PMMA has two regions of Tg which are at around 90 °C and 125 °C, respectively, of which the first one was attributed to the poly[(methyl methacrylate)-ran-(glycidyl methacrylate)] and the second one was due to the PMMA. A core/shell structure of the glycidyl-functionalized PMMA latex nanoparticles was observed.  相似文献

The effect of a high magnetic field of 7 T in the reaction of methyl methacrylate polymerization is emphasized. The intervening magnetokinetic modifications are correlated with the system of radical initiation with benzoyl peroxide, 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile), 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid), and 1,1′‐azobis(cyclohexane‐1‐carbonitrile). The characterization of the synthesized polymers is correlated with the reaction conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5678–5686, 2004  相似文献

A kind of fibrous clay, palygorskite(PAL), was used as the sole stabilizer in suspension polymerization without the using of any other stabilizer usually used, especially polymeric stabilizers. In order to improve the compatibility with the organic monomer, PAL nano fibers were organically modified with silane coupling agent methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPS). Transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy results show that the hydrolyzed MPS was attached onto PAL surface through Si―O―Si bonds formation without morphology change of PAL. At a loading amount of PAL to monomer as low as 0.36 wt%, effective stabilization could be achieved. After suspension polymerization, spherical poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) particles were obtained. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) analysis on both the outer surface and the inner cracked surface of the spherical PMMA particles indicates that the PAL particles reside on the surface of the PMMA spheres. The densely stacked PAL together with attached silane coupling agent stabilized the droplets throughout the suspension polymerization.  相似文献

This study examined the use of a new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator in the bulk free‐radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The objective was to investigate the effect of using a multifunctional initiator through an examination of the rates of polymerization and the polymer properties. The molecular weights and radii of gyration were obtained with a size exclusion chromatograph equipped with an online multi‐angle laser light scattering detector. The performance of the tetrafunctional initiator was compared to that of a monofunctional counterpart [tert‐butylperoxy 2‐ethylhexyl carbonate (TBEC)]. The results showed that the new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator produced a faster rate of polymerization than TBEC at an equivalent concentration but also generated a polymer of a lower molecular weight. This trend was the opposite of what was observed in a previous study with styrene. When TBEC was used at a concentration four times that of the new tetrafunctional peroxide initiator, both produced equal rates of polymerization and similar molecular weights. The degree of branching was also investigated with radius‐of‐gyration plots. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 42: 5647–5661, 2004  相似文献

The ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated. Experimental results show that sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) surfactant plays a very important role in obtaining a high polymer yield, because in the absence of SDS, monomer conversion is near zero. Thus, the surfactant serves as an initiator and as interfacial modifier in this system (MMA/H2O), and the monomer conversion increases significantly with increasing SDS concentration. An increase in the reactor temperature also leads to an increase in the monomer conversion. An appropriate increase in the N2 purging rate also leads to higher conversion. The conversion of MMA decreases with increasing monomer concentration because of the higher viscosity of the system. With the experimental results, optimized reaction conditions were obtained. Accordingly, a high monomer conversion of about 67% and a high molecular weight of several millions can be obtained in a period of about 30 min. Furthermore, transmission electron micrographs show that the latex particles prepared are nanosized, indicating a promising technique for preparing nanoscale latex particles with a small amount of surfactant. In conclusion, a promising technique for ultrasonically initiated emulsion polymerization has been successfully performed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were prepared by the in situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide on the surface of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles, followed by the dissolution of the CaCO3 core in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid solution. The microcapsules were characterized using fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The average sizes of the CaCO3 particles and PMMA capsules were 3.8 ± 0.6 and 4.0 ± 0.6 μm, respectively. A copolymer consisting of MMA and rhodamine B-bearing MMA was also used to prepare microcapsules for fluorescent microscopy observations. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled bovine serum albumin was enclosed in the PMMA microcapsules and its release properties were studied.  相似文献

A novel method is proposed to produce PMMA with excellent thermal stability by a continuous process composed of polymerization and devolatilization steps. It is based on the fact that free radical polymerized PMMA is a mixture of polymer chains with different structure, a small fraction of which, containing head-to-head linkages or unsaturated ends, is less thermally stable and the major portion without those defect structures which is much more stable. Our idea is selectively remove the unstable chains from this mixture by pre-decomposing them at suitable temperatures in a continuous process, leaving the stable portion as the final PMMA product. The results showed that during the continuous process, the chains with head-to-head linkages were eliminated by conducting the polymerization at 155 °C, and then the chains with unsaturated ends were removed by devolatilization at 300 °C. The final PMMA was thermally stable up to 313 °C.  相似文献

A series of nickel complexes, including Ni(acac)2, (C5H5)Ni(η3‐allyl), and [NiMe4Li2(THF)2]2, that were activated with modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) exhibited high catalytic activity for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) but showed no catalytic activity for the polymerization of ethylene and 1‐olefins. The resulting polymers exhibited rather broad molecular weight distributions and low syndiotacticities. In contrast to these initiators, the metallocene complexes (C5H5)2Ni, (C5Me5)2Ni, (Ind)2Ni, and (Me3SiC5H4)2Ni provided narrower molecular weight distributions at 60 °C when these initiator were activated with MMAO. Half‐metallocene complexes such as (C5H5)NiCl(PPh3), (C5Me5)NiCl(PPh3), and (Ind)NiCl(PPh3) produced poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with much narrower molecular weight distributions when the polymerization was carried out at 0 °C. Ni[1,3‐(CF3)2‐acac]2 generated PMMA with high syndiotacticity. The NiR(acac)(PPh3) complexes (R = Me or Et) revealed high selectivity in the polymerization of isoprene that produced 1,2‐/3,4‐polymer at 0 °C exclusively, whereas the polymerization at 60 °C resulted in the formation of cis‐1,4‐rich polymers. The polymerization of ethylene with Ni(1,3‐tBu2‐acac)2 and Ni[1,3‐(CF3)2‐acac]2 generated oligo‐ethylene with moderate catalytic activity, whereas the reaction of ethylene with Ni(acac)2/MMAO produced high molecular weight polyethylene. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were produced by dispersion polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of mercaptopropyl terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (MP-PDMS) in supercritical carbon dioxide at about 30 MPa for 24 h at 65 °C. The particle diameter could be controlled in a size range of submicron to micron by varying MP-PDMS concentration. The MP-PDMS worked as not only a chain transfer agent but also a colloidal stabilizer, which was named tran stab.Part CCLI of the series Studies on suspension and emulsion  相似文献

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles ranging in diameter from 2 to 10 μm were prepared by dispersion polymerization. The effects of various polymerization parameters on the size and monodispersity were systematically investigated. The particle size was found to increase with increasing polymerization temperature, concentration and decomposition rate of the initiator, and solvency of the dispersion medium. It also increased with increasing concentration and molecular weight of the polymeric stabilizer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). As the monomer concentration was increased from 5 to 20 wt %, a minimum was found in the particle size at a monomer concentration of 10 wt %. A costabilizer was found to be necessary for preparing monodisperse particles at stabilizer concentrations below 2 wt %. A recycling experiment showed that the consumption of PVP was quite small in each cycle and the residual materials in this system could be reused readily. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Before polymerization, the introduction of double bonds onto the surface of the TiO2 particles was achieved by the treatment of the TiO2 particles with the silane-coupling agent. Via in-situ emulsion polymerization, the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/titanium oxide (TiO2) composite particles were prepared by graft polymerization of MMA from the surface of the modified TiO2 particles. The structure of the obtained PMMA/TiO2 composite particles was characterized using fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and size excluding chromatography (SEC). The morphology of the obtained PMMA/TiO2 composite particles was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results of FT-IR and TGA measurements show that PMMA is successfully grafted from the surface of the TiO2 particles and that the percentage of grafting and the grafting efficiency can reach 208.3% and 96.6%, respectively. At the same time, the TGA and DSC measurements indicate an enhancement of thermal stability. TEM images demonstrate a better dispersion of the TiO2 particles in the composite latex. In addition, UV-visible absorption measurements show that the PMMA/TiO2 composite particles can absorb over 95% UV light at 210–400 nm wavelength.  相似文献

The reverse atom transfer radical polymerization (RATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was successfully carried out under pulsed microwave irradiation (PMI) at 69 °C with N,N‐dimethylformamide as a solvent and with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN)/CuBr2/tetramethylethylenediamine as an initiation system. PMI resulted in a significant increase in the polymerization rate of RATRP. A 10.5% conversion for a polymer with a number‐average molecular weight of 34,500 and a polydispersity index of 1.23 was obtained under PMI with a mean power of 4.5 W in only 52 min, but 103 min was needed under a conventional heating process (CH) to reach a 8.3% conversion under identical conditions. At different [MMA]0/[AIBN]0 molar ratios, the apparent rate constant of polymerization under PMI was 1.5–2.3 times larger than that under CH. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
