Isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of polyester 64 have been investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. The Avrami analysis has been performed to obtain the kinetic parameters of primary crystallization. These indicate a three-dimensional spherulitic growth on heterogeneous nuclei for the isothermal crystallization, whereas an sporadic nucleation becomes dominant in the nonisothermal crystallization. The maximum crystallization rate of polyester 64 was deduced to take place at a temperature close to −3 °C. Polarizing light microscopy showed that spherulites with a negative birefringence are formed during isothermal crystallization, whereas transmission electron microscopy indicates that the b crystallographic axis is aligned parallel to the spherulitic radius.  相似文献

The molecular dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate), PVAc, and poly(hydroxy butyrate), PHB, as an amorphous/crystalline polymer blend has been investigated using broadband dielectric spectroscopy over wide ranges of frequency (10−2 to 105 Hz), temperature, and blend composition. Two dielectric relaxation processes were detected for pure PHB at high and low frequency ranges at a given constant temperature above the Tg. These two relaxation peaks are related to the α and α′ of the amorphous and rigid amorphous regions in the sample, respectively. The α′-relaxation process was found to be temperature and composition dependent and related to the constrained amorphous region located between adjacent lamellae inside the lamellar stacks. In addition, the α′-relaxation process behaves as a typical glass relaxation process, i.e., originated from the micro-Brownian cooperative reorientation of highly constraints polymeric segments. The α-relaxation process is related to the amorphous regions located between the lamellar crystals stacks. In the PHB/PVAc blends, only one α-relaxation process has been observed for all measured blends located in the temperature ranges between the Tg’s of the pure components. This last finding suggested that the relaxation processes of the two components are coupled together due to the small difference in the Tg’s (ΔTg = 35 °C) and the favorable thermodynamics interaction between the two polymer components and consequently less dynamic heterogeneity in the blends. The Tg’s of the blends measured by DSC were followed a linear behavior with composition indicating that the two components are miscible over the entire range of composition. The α′-relaxation process was also observed in the blends of rich PHB content up to 30 wt% PHB. The molecular dynamics of α and α′-relaxation processes were found to be greatly influenced by blending, i.e., the dielectric strength, the peak broadness, and the dielectric loss peak maximum were found to be composition dependent. The dielectric measurements also confirmed the slowing down of the crystallization process of PHB in the blends.  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of a new regular poly(ester amide) constituted by glycolic acid and 6-aminohexanoic acid units under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions is studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is used to monitor bulk crystallization, and subsequently Avrami and Ozawa analyses are applied. A three-dimensional spherulitic growth from heterogeneous nuclei is deduced for isothermal crystallization, whereas higher exponents are obtained for non-isothermal crystallization when an Avrami equation is applied. However, modifications of the Ozawa methodology indicate a crystallization mechanism similar to that of the isothermal process. The maximum crystallization rate is deduced to take place at a temperature close to 91 °C by considering experimental data and theoretical equations with adjusted parameters. The equilibrium melting temperature is determined to be 168 °C by the characteristic Hoffman-Weeks plot. One crystallization regime is detected by using the Lauritzen-Hoffman kinetic theory for isothermal crystallization and also with an isoconversional method applied for non-isothermal crystallization. Activation energy of molecular transport and nucleation constant are close to 1500 cal/mol and 1.81 × 105 K2, respectively. Crystal morphology, nucleation, and spherulitic growth rates are also investigated with hot-stage optical microscopy (HSOM).  相似文献

The crystallization behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) melts with a high order has been carefully examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). The experimental results show that the helically ordered iPP melt crystallizes by heterogeneous nucleation with two-dimensional diffusion controlled growth and the Avrami exponent is about 2. The data available both from our DSC and PLM experiments and from the literature indicate that the order of a polymer melt can speed up the crystallization process. When some unmelted materials exist in the ordered melt, the crystallization will become more rapid. Received: 16 June 2000 Accepted: 16 October 2000  相似文献

The effect of curing process of thermosetting powder coating consists of carboxylated polyester resin cured with triglycidyl isocyanurate has been investigated using broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy over a wide range of frequency (10−1-106 Hz) and temperature (70-105 °C) for different constant curing times. The molecular dynamics of the glass relaxation process (α-process) was investigated as a function of curing time, frequency, and temperature. It has been found that, only one common α-relaxation process has been observed for all measured samples of different degree of curing stages, its dynamics and broadness were found to be curing time dependent. In addition, the curing time dependence of the dielectric relaxation strength, Δε, has also been examined for the α and β-relaxation processes. The Δε for the two relaxation processes decreased strongly at the beginning of curing process and then became almost constant at longer curing times. This finding implied that the numbers of reoriented dipoles decrease with curing time as a result of the formation of three-dimensional polymer network. Furthermore, the dislocation energy, εs, calculated from the Meander model was found to be increased with increasing the curing time, i.e. the formation of a three-dimensional polymer network produces many structural defects or dislocation points. In addition, the activation energy of the curing process was calculated from the analysis of the calorimetric exothermic peaks of the curing process at different heating rates.  相似文献

In this research, the morphologies,isothermal-crystallization kinetics, and spherulite growth of aliphatic polyketone/polyamide-6 blends were studied.A single glass-transition temperature (Tg) was determined, and the composition dependence of Tg for these blends was well described by the Kwei equation. The strong intermolecular interaction between the two polymer components was confirmed by melting-point depression. The isothermal-crystallization kinetics were analyzed on the basis of the Avrami approach.A linear increase in the radii of the spherulites with time was observed for all compositions. All the spherulites continued to grow at nearly identical growth rates. With increasing polyamide-6 content, the size of the spherulites in the polyketone/polyamide-6 blends gradually decreased, and the number of spherulites in the blends increased.  相似文献

The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) have been investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (PLM). Enthalpy data of exotherm from isothermal crystallization were analyzed using the Avrami theory. The average value of the Avrami exponent, n, is about 2.8. From the melt, PTT crystallizes according to a spherulite morphology. The spherulite growth rate and the overall crystallization rate depend on crystallization temperature. The increase in the spherulitic radius was examined by polarized light microscopy. Using values of transport parameters common to many polymers (U* = 1500 cal/mol, T= Tg − 30 °C) together with experimentally determined values of T (248 °C) and Tg (44 °C), the nucleation parameter, kg, for PTT was determined. On the basis of secondary nucleation analyses, a transition between regimes III and II was found in the vicinity of 194 °C (ΔT ≅ 54 K). The ratio of kg of these two regimes is 2.1, which is very close to 2.0 as predicted by the Lauritzen–Hoffman theory. The lateral surface‐free energy, σ = 10.89 erg/cm2 and the fold surface‐free energy, σe = 56.64 erg/cm2 were determined. The latter leads to a work of chain‐folding, q = 4.80 kcal/mol folds, which is comparable to PET and PBT previously reported. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. For the first time, quantitative analyses of the crystallization kinetics, surface free energy of chain folding, and morphology in phenolic/poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) binary blends have been studied. The spherulite growth rate and the overall crystallization rate depend on the crystallization temperature and PCL content in the blend. In addition, the crystallization and melting temperatures of the PCL phase decrease with an increase in the phenolic content. An Avrami analysis shows that the addition of phenolic to PCL results in a decrease in the overall crystallization rate of the PCL phase. The presence of an amorphous phenolic phase results in a reduction in the rate of the spherulite growth of PCL. The surface free energy of folding increases with increasing phenolic content, and the crystal thickness of a phenolic/PCL blend, according to small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), is greater than that of pure PCL because of the increase in the surface free energy of chain folding and the decrease in the degree of supercooling. The observed domain size of the crystalline/amorphous phase (5.9 nm) from SAXS is also consistent with that from solid-state NMR (3–20 nm). All these results indicate that the crystallization ability of PCL decreases with increasing phenolic content in the blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics of polypropylene (PP) with hyperbranched polyurethane acrylate (HUA) being used as a toughening agent was studied by isothermal and nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The presence of a small amount of HUA (2-7%) remarkably influences the crystallizability of PP. An addition of HUA leads to an increase in the number of effective nuclei, thus resulting in an increase of crystallization rate and a stronger trend of instantaneous three-dimensional growth. For isothermal crystallization, Avrami exponents were determined to be about 2.97 for pure PP and 3.51 for the HUA/PP blend containing 5% HUA (HUA-PP). The half crystallization time (t1/2) of pure PP was measured to be 8.43 min, while being 3.28 min for HUA-PP at the crystallization temperature of 132 °C. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of HUA/PP blends was analyzed by Avrami, Ozawa and Kissinger methods. It has also been proved that an addition of HUA could increase the crystallization rate of PP. Moreover, the crystallization activation energies of pure PP and HUA-PP were estimated by Kissinger and Friedman methods.  相似文献

The crystallization kinetics, morphology and mechanical properties of a novel poly(ethylene succinate-co-octamethylene succinate) (PEOS) copolyester with 82 mol% ethylene succinate (ES) units and 18 mol% octamethylene succinate (OS) units, and its homopolymer poly(ethylene succinate) (PES) were extensively investigated. The glass transition temperature, cold crystallization peak temperature and melting point of PEOS are around −24, 47.5, and 80.5 °C, respectively. The Avrami equation was used to analyze the isothermal melt crystallization kinetics of PEOS and PES. They display the same crystallization mechanism, and PEOS crystallizes slower than PES at the same degree of supercooling. The spherulitic growth rates of PEOS and PES exhibit a bell shape within the investigated crystallization temperature range, with the crystallization regime transition temperature of PEOS being lower than that of PES. In addition, PEOS has high thermal stability and good mechanical properties.  相似文献

This rapid communication reports a summary of the key findings of crystallization kinetics studies of unfractionated high density (linear) polyethylene at extremely large supercoolings. We report, for the first time, the maximum in crystal growth rate-crystallization temperature data for linear polyethylene, which has been sought by many researchers since the 1950s. The maximum growth rate was found to occur in the range of 70-75 °C with two separate methods. The kinetics studies were performed using a newly developed quench-crystallization technique based on depolarized reflection light microscopy that is capable of achieving enormously higher quench rates than existing methods. Typical onset crystallization temperatures accessed with this technique range from 40 to 90 °C. Bulk growth rates of crystals were obtained as the reciprocal of crystallization half times measured from the change in the depolarized light intensity upon direct crystallization from the melt. Separately, radial growth rates of spherulites were measured over a wide range of supercoolings. Secondary nucleation analysis of the crystal growth rates resulted in single linear fits extending into deep regime III, suggesting no change in mechanism of formation of the crystals at the largest supercoolings. The deeply quenched films, crystallized at temperatures below the maximum, contain non-impinged spherulites, capable of further crystallization.  相似文献

Various well dried solid celluloses, such as nativecelluloses from different sources, different pulps and regenerated cellulosefibers were compared by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) in the lowfrequency (10 mHz to 5 MHz) and low temperature(–130 to 20 °C) range. No significant differences werefound in the polymeric dynamics. In addition, the influence of the watercontenton the -relaxation and the wet relaxation wasinvestigated for morphologically very different celluloses such as cottonlinters, highly amorphous bead cellulose and lyocell fibers. The lyocell fiberswere investigated in the unmodified form and after modification by a treatmentwith alkali, after mild bleaching and after chemical crosslinking. It was foundthat the water content influences the dielectric dynamics and the intensityparameters differently for these different materials. NaOH-activation usingdifferent lye concentrations also influenced the dielectric dynamics. Finally, opportunities and limitations of DRS as a diagnostic tool are discussed.  相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) is one of the most powerful and prevailing structural analysis techniques for dielectric materials. Engine lubricating oil is a typical dielectric material. But DS for qualitative or quantitative analysis of engine lubricating oil has received little attention. In this paper, DS in association with support vector machines (SVM) classification technique was employed to classify 20 samples of engine lubricating oils from Mobil, Shell and Esso by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) viscosity grade and source (manufacturer). Both distinguishing the multi-grade from the single-grade according to SAE grade and classification according to manufacturer were done perfectly, which proved that DS can provide useful compositional and structural information on engine lubricating oil. The work in this article has laid the foundation for further quantitative determination of properties of engine lubricating oil and will be a good start to application of DS to petroleum analysis and testing.  相似文献

Macromolecular dynamics of sulfonated poly(styrene-b-ethylene-ran-butylene-b-styrene) (sSEBS) triblock copolymers were investigated using broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). Two main relaxations corresponding to the glass transitions in the EB and S block phases were identified and their temperature dependences were VFT-like. Tg for the S block phase shifted to higher temperature due to restrictions on chain mobility caused by hydrogen bonded SO3H groups. While the EB block phase Tg appeared to remain constant with degree of sulfonation in DMA experiments, it shifted somewhat upward in BDS spectra. A low temperature relaxation beneath the glass transition of the EB block phase was attributed to short range chain motions. The Kramers–Krönig integral transformation was used to calculate conductivity-free loss permittivity spectra from real permittivity spectra to enhance true relaxation peaks. A loss permittivity peak tentatively assigned to relaxation of internal S-EB interfacial polarization was seen at temperatures above the S block phase glass transition, and the temperature dependence of this relaxation was VFT-like. The fragilities of the EB and S block domains in sulfonated SEBS decreased after sulfonation. The temperature dependence of the dc conduction contribution to sSEBS loss spectra also followed VFT-like behavior and S block segmental relaxation time correlated well with conductivity according to the fractional Debye–Stokes–Einstein equation.  相似文献

Aiming to develop new dielectric polymers containing CN and F groups with strong dipole moments, a novel copolymer of acrylonitrile (AN) and 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate (ATRIF) was synthesized in acetonitrile by free radical process as well as the respective homopolymer (poly(ATRIF)). The copolymer’s composition and microstructure were analyzed by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and SEC. The molar incorporation of AN determined in the copolymer by NMR was 58 mol%. Thermogravimetric analysis of poly(AN-co-ATRIF) copolymer showed good thermal stability comparatively to the fluorinated homopolymer. Both copolymer, poly(AN-co-ATRIF), and homopolymer, poly(ATRIF), were dielectrically characterized over a frequency range from 10−1 to 106 Hz, and in a temperature range from 223 to 393 K. The dominating relaxation process detected in both materials is the α-relaxation, associated with the dynamic glass transition. A VFTH temperature dependence of the relaxation times (τ) was found for both materials, as characteristic of cooperative processes, from which the respective glass transition temperatures (Tg(τ = 100 s)) were estimated, which differ ∼40 K, the one of the copolymer being higher (307 K) in accordance to the calorimetric analysis. This effect was attributed to a higher stiffness of the backbone in the copolymer originated by the inclusion of the acrylonitrile groups. Both relaxation functions have the same breath of relaxation times allowing constructing a single master curve, indicating similar non-exponential character. A less fragile behavior was found for the copolymer. This was rationalized in a more straightforward way by the free volume approach instead from a correlation between fragility and intermolecular coupling. It was found that in the copolymer the free volume increases at a lower rate with the temperature increase. It was inferred from the VFTH temperature dependence of the dc conductivity and low values of the decoupling index that ion motion is significantly influenced by the dynamics of the α-process.  相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is an emerging material mainly because it can be synthesized from renewable resources and is thus environmentally and ecologically safe. The mechanical properties, above all the thermal resistance of PLA are determined by the crystalline content: the heat deflection temperature of crystalline PLA can reach 100 °C, whereas amorphous PLA loses mechanical properties at temperatures slightly higher than 60 °C. However, PLA has a low crystallization rate, so that after processing it remains mostly amorphous. This characteristic heavily limits the use of PLA for commercial applications. Many studies have been recently published on the crystallization kinetics of PLA. The effect of processing on this feature is however often neglected. In this work, the significance of processing on the crystallization kinetics of a commercial PLA was investigated. Two processing methods were explored: extrusion and injection moulding. The obtained materials, and the starting pellets of virgin polymer, were analyzed by calorimetry in order to obtain the crystallization kinetics. Two protocols were adopted to determine the crystallization rates during cooling from the melt or heating from the solid. The parameters of a kinetic equation were determined for all the materials and protocols adopted and it was thus possible to describe the evolution of crystallinity during heating and during cooling.  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(butylene succinate-co-24 mol% hexamethylene succinate) (PBHS), both crystalline polymers, formed melt-miscible crystalline/crystalline polymer blends. Both the characteristic diffraction peaks and nonisothermal melt crystallization peak of each component were found in the blends, indicating that PVDF and PBHS crystallized separately. The crystalline morphology and crystallization kinetics of each component were studied under different crystallization conditions for the PVDF/PBHS blends. Both the spherulitic growth rates and overall isothermal melt crystallization rates of blended PVDF decreased with increasing the PBHS composition and were lower than those of neat PVDF, when the crystallization temperature was above the melting point of PBHS component. The crystallization mechanism of neat and blended PVDF remained unchanged, despite changes of blend composition and crystallization temperature. The crystallization kinetics and crystalline morphology of neat and blended PBHS were further studied, when the crystallization temperature was below the melting point of PBHS component. Relative to neat PBHS, the overall crystallization rates of the blended PBHS first increased and then decreased with increasing the PVDF content in the blends, indicating that the preexisting PVDF crystals may show different effects on the nucleation and crystal growth of PBHS component in the crystalline/crystalline polymer blends.  相似文献
