Two series of amphiphilic hydrogels of various compositions were prepared by sequentially interpenetrating two polymer networks, a poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) network inside either a macroporous matrix of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or a macroporous poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) network. In both cases poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) served as network II, and the firstly formed porous network was a hydrophobic homonetwork, PMMA or PEA, that conferred mechanical strength to the hydrogel. In order to obtain hydrogels with high hydrophilic content, the first network was prepared in the presence of a solvent, thus yielding a macroporous network. The two families of IPNs thus obtained were: (net-PMMA)-ipn-(net-PHEA) and (net-PEA)-ipn-(net-PHEA), with a PHEA content ranging from 36% to 87% and from 64% to 94%, respectively. The novelty of the work consisted in comparing the effect of using as the first macroporous network a polymer which is glassy at room temperature (PMMA) and another of the same family (PEA) but which is in the rubber state at room temperature. Swelling studies showed that the specific equilibrium water content of PHEA falls from 1.6 for pure (unconfined) PHEA to values that range from 0.4 to 1, for the (net-PMMA)-ipn-(net-PHEA), whereas in the second IPNs family, the equilibrium water uptake of PHEA phase is, at least, the same as that of the pure PHEA (in some cases it is greater). This means that the expansion of the PHEA phase is not restricted by the confining hydrophobic component when this last is in the rubber state at room temperature. Whereas for the first IPNs the mechanical properties significantly increased (storage modulus at 37 °C from 0.25 to 2.5 GPa) compared with those of pure PHEA (25.12 MPa), little if any reinforcing effect was observed in the second type of IPNs. This is due to the fact that the glass transition of the PEA network takes place at a lower temperature than that of PHEA, so both components are in the rubbery state at room temperature. Both series behave differently also in dynamic water sorption experiments: the rigid PMMA network hinders the diffusion of water, yielding lower values of the apparent diffusion coefficients. By contrast, with the PEA polymer as network I this diffusion is similar to that of the pure PHEA homonetwork.  相似文献

A series of interpenetrated polymer networks (IPNs) in which the first component is a porous poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) hydrophobic network and the second one is a poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) hydrophilic network were synthesized. Equilibrium sorption isotherms can be reduced to a single master curve for all the IPNs when the water absorbed is expressed per gram of PHEA in them. The equilibrium water sorption in immersion is always much smaller than that of pure PHEA. This feature is due to the confining effect of the stiff PEMA matrix. The plasticizing effect of the absorbed water on the PHEA phase was characterized using thermally stimulated depolarization currents, dynamic-mechanical analysis and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. The results show that the shift of the main relaxation peak towards lower temperatures is unaffected by the presence of the PEMA matrix, and only depends on the water content per gram of PHEA in the IPN.  相似文献

The enthalpic effect due to the interaction between α, β poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in aqueous solutions as a function of the surfactant concentration was measured by the calorimetric technique at various NaCl concentrations. A marked influence of the added electrolyte on the PHEA-SDS interaction was observed. An analysis of the experimental enthalpies allows to estimate the electrostatic and the hydrophobic contributions to the enthalpy of interaction between PHEA and SDS micelles. The results were rationalized in terms of effects due to the screening of the charges residing on PHEA and SDS micelles.  相似文献

Water and polymer dynamics in hydrogels based on random copolymers of hydrophilic poly(hydroxyl ethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and hydrophobic poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA), in wide ranges of composition, were investigated by means of two dielectric techniques, thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) and, mainly, broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) at several levels of relative humidity/water content. Water sorption of the hydrogels was studied by equilibrium sorption isotherms (ESI). Two secondary relaxations (γ and βsw) and the primary (segmental) α relaxation associated with the glass transition of the copolymer matrix were followed and analyzed against copolymer composition and water content. The results show that the copolymers are homogeneous at nm scale, except at very high PEA content. Correlations were observed between results on the organization of water in the hydrogels and on water effects on polymer dynamics. Distinct changes in the dielectric response, in particular in the time scale and the dielectric strength of the βsw relaxation, at the water content of the completion of the first hydration layer indicate that water molecules themselves contribute to the dielectric response at higher water contents. Proton conductivity of the hydrogels at various levels of water content was also studied and correlation to segmental dynamics (decoupling) was analyzed.  相似文献

Amphiphilic block copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and sodium styrene sulfonate (SSNa) were successfully synthesized via direct atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of SSNa. First, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macroinitiators were prepared using proper ATRP systems for each case. In some cases, functional initiators, which allow further reactions, were used. The macroinitiators were characterized and further used to synthesize PSSNa/PMMA block copolymers, by using proper solvent combinations, such as N,N-dimethylformamide/water or methanol/water at appropriate volume ratios, in order to ensure solubility of the synthesized amphiphilic copolymers. The molecular weight of the copolymers was determined by gel permeation chromatography, using water as eluent. By using a combination of analytical techniques like 1H NMR, FTIR and thermogravimetry, the chemical structure and the actual copolymer composition were determined. Since, the block copolymers were soluble in water, forming hydrophilic/hydrophobic domains in aqueous solution, their micellization behavior was further studied by pyrene fluorescence probing.  相似文献

The thermoresponsive behavior and mechanical properties of nanostructured hydrogels, which consist of poly(acrylamide) nanoparticles embedded in a cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel matrix, are reported here. Nanostructured hydrogels exhibit a tuned volume phase transition temperature (T VPT), which varies with nanoparticle content in the range from 32 up to 39–40 °C. Moreover, larger equilibrium water uptake, faster swelling and de-swelling rates, and larger equilibrium swelling at 25 °C were obtained with nanostructured hydrogels compared with those of conventional ones. Elastic and Young’s moduli were larger than those of conventional hydrogels at similar swelling ratios. The tuned T VPT and the de-swelling rate were predicted with a modified Flory–Rehner equation coupled with a mixing rule that considers the contribution of both polymers. These behaviors are explained by a combination of hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and by the controlled inhomogeneities (nanoparticles) introduced by the method of synthesis.  相似文献

The oxidative stability of blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with four types of rubber, poly(ethylene-stat-propylene-stat-5-methylene-2-norbornene) (EPDM), poly(ethylene-stat-vinyl acetate) (EVA), dicarboxy terminated poly(acrylonitrile-stat-butadiene) (NBR) and poly(1,3-butadiene-stat-styrene) (SBR), has been investigated as models for rubber-toughened PMMA. Chemiluminescence was used to monitor the oxidation of the rubber in the blends, revealing an unexpected accelerating effect of PMMA on the oxidation of all the rubbers investigated. The effect varies according to the type of rubber and the temperature. The thermo-oxidative stability of PMMA has also been found to decrease in the presence of the rubber as proved by thermogravimetry, confirming mutually antagonistic effects of PMMA and rubber in the blend oxidation. On the basis of results from all techniques, including identification of oxidation products by FTIR spectroscopy, a possible mechanism is suggested, involving the formation of mobile radicals in PMMA induced by rubber oxidation. These radicals are suggested to play a crucial role in enhancing rubber phase oxidation.  相似文献

The miscibility, morphology, and thermal properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends with different concentrations of poly(methyl methacylate) (PMMA) have been studied. The interaction between the phases was studied by FTIR and by measuring the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the blends using differential scanning calorimetry. Distribution of the phases at different compositions was studied through scanning electron microscopy. The FTIR and SEM results show little interaction and gross phase separation. The thermogravimetric studies on these blends were carried out under inert atmosphere from ambient to 800 °C at different heating rates varying from 2.5 to 20 °C/min. The thermal decomposition temperatures of the first and second stage of degradation in PVC in the presence of PMMA were higher than the pure. The stabilization effect on PVC was found most significant with 10 wt% PMMA content in the PVC matrix. These results agree with the isothermal degradation studies using dehydrochlorination and UV-vis spectroscopic results carried out on these blends. Using multiple heating rate kinetics the activation energies of the degradation process in PVC and its blends have been reported.  相似文献

The interaction of 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulphonate (ANS) with cross-linked poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (CPVP) was studied by the adsorption technique at different temperatures and at two different pH values. Analysis by the Scatchard method and the study made in the presence of urea showed that the iceberg structure of water affects the sorption of ANS to CPVP, leading to cooperativity. The observed Giles sorption isotherms at both the pH values were of theL-type which indicated the interaction of ANS in flat configuration with the binding site in CPVP. The sorption of ANS to CPVP was enhanced considerably at acidic pH due to some structural factors which also resulted in multilayer sorption at this pH. Comparison of binding of ANS to CPVP and to linear poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) demonstrated the greater contribution of hydrophobic interaction in CPVP than in the linear polymer.  相似文献

The permeation and separation characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as chloroform, benzene, and toluene, from water by pervaporation through cross-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane) membranes prepared from poly(dimethylsiloxane) dimethylmethacrylate macromonomer (PDMSDMMA) and divinyl compounds, such as ethylene glycol dimethylmethacrylate (EGDM), divinyl benzene (DVB), divinyl siloxane (DVS), and divinyl perfluoro-n-hexane (DVF) are described. When aqueous solutions containing 0.05 wt.% VOCs were permeated through cross-linked PDMSDMMA membranes, these membranes showed high VOC/water selectivity and permeability. Both VOC/water selectivity and permeability were affected significantly by the divinyl compound. Furthermore cross-linked PDMSDMMA membranes showed the highest chloroform/water selectivity. The VOC/water selectivity was mainly governed by the sorption selectivity rather than the diffusion selectivity. However, the difference in the selectivity between different types of VOCs depended on differences in the diffusivity of permeants. With increasing downstream pressure, the VOC/water selectivity of all cross-linked PDMSDMMA membranes increased, but the permeability decreased. A PDMSDMMA–DVF membrane exhibited a normalized permeation rate of 1.9 × 10−5 kg m/m2 h and a separation factor for chloroform/water of 4850, yielding a separation index of 9110. The pervaporation characteristics of the cross-linked PDMSDMMA membranes are discussed based on their chemical and physical structures as well as the chemical and physical properties of the permeants.  相似文献

The morphology of a series of hydrogels based on the interpenetration of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) and poly(ethyl acrylate) has been studied through transmission electron microscopy, TEM, atomic force microscopy, AFM, and dynamic-mechanical spectroscopy, DMA. For the TEM analysis phosphotungstic acid, PTA, was used as alternative selective staining agent to those commonly used. The good agreement between TEM and AFM images allowed us to confirm that the PTA technique is a very powerful tool for TEM analysis of these hydrogel systems. All the results show that the IPNs presented phase-separation with two kinds of microdomains: those preferentially with a hydrophilic nature and those with preferentially a hydrophobic one, of sizes that range from 30 nm to 100 nm. Each one of these domains is composed by smaller nanodomains of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic component ranging between 6 and 10 nm sizes, those preferentially with a hydrophilic nature having a larger proportion of hydrophilic nanodomains. The AFM images of the IPN with the highest PHEA mass fraction, xPHEA = 0.75, suggest that the hydrophilic phase is co-continuous in the material. A disperse hydrophilic phase is found when the PHEA mass fraction is reduced up to xPHEA = 0.38. This phase-separation is explained in terms of some characteristic parameters of the networks such as the mesh size and the number of units between cross-links. The morphology found makes the systems very attractive for cell adhesion substrates and for matrices of scaffolds in soft tissue engineering.  相似文献

We report a single step preparation of monodisperse fluorescent poly(methyl)methacrylate (PMMA) lattices cross-linked with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate with radii in the range 150-1000 nm using dispersion polymerization. The particles are applied as fluorescent cores in core-shell PMMA particles for confocal microscopy (Dullens et al. Langmuir 2003, 19, 5963). Contrary to un-cross-linked particles, these cross-linked colloids are stable in good solvents for PMMA as well. Therefore we studied the properties of the cross-linked PMMA particles in the good solvents tetrahydrofuran (THF), chloroform, and toluene using light scattering and confocal scanning laser microscopy. We show that the particles swell instantaneously and that their volume can increase up to more than seven times their volume in poor solvents. Further, it is very likely that the particles are charged in THF.  相似文献

The sorption behaviour of several metal ions on five kinds of poly(4- or 2-vinylpyridine) resins, cross-linked with divinylbenzene, and with different surface properties, are examined. All the resins proposed sorb some metal ions effectively in a similar manner by anion-exchange, while the sorption of metal ions by complex formation with the pyridine moiety is strongly affected by the surface properties of the resins. A macroreticular poly(4-vinylpyridine) resin shows high affinity for copper and nickel ions in acetate buffer. Sodium chloride and/or methanol added to the working solutions influence the sorption capacities for metal ions. This resin was applied to the separation of copper/cobalt and nickel/cobalt and the concentration of copper from sea-water by a column operation.  相似文献

Detailed investigations on the dielectric relaxation mechanisms in poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA), by means of the thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) method in the temperature range 77-300 K are reported. There is particular interest in the dependence of the dielectric relaxation mechanisms on the water content h, h = 0 ? 0.5 w/w, in an attempt to contribute to a better understanding of the physical structure of water in the PHEA hydrogels. We employ thermal sampling (TS) and partial heating (PH) techniques to experimentally analyze the observed complex relaxation processes, due to the secondary (βsw) and the main (α) relaxation, into approximately single responses and to determine the spectra of activation energies E(T) at different h values. Measurements with different electrode configurations reveal different aspects of the dynamics of the relaxation mechanisms and allow the distinction between dipolar and conductivity relaxation contributions. It is shown that by means of these techniques we can determine certain temperature characteristics for the α relaxation and investigate their dependence on water content. We discuss the relation of these characteristic temperatures to the calorimetric glass transition temperature Tg. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Water sorption in hydrogels based on nanocomposites of poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and silica, prepared by simultaneous polymerization and sol‐gel process, were studied gravimetrically over wide ranges of silica content, both below and above the percolation threshold of about 15% wt for the formation of a continuous inorganic network interpenetrated with the organic network. Measurements were performed at room temperature from the vapor phase, both at equilibrium and dynamic, for selected values of water activity αw between 0 and 0.95, and from the liquid phase. In the nanocomposite hydrogels, the overall water uptake from the vapor phase is practically the same as in pure PHEA below the percolation threshold, whereas it is reduced above the percolation threshold, in particular at high αw values where swelling becomes significant. Water clustering sets in at around 14 vol % (10 wt %) of water independently of composition, whereas the mean value of water molecules in a cluster decreases at high silica contents. In immersion experiments water uptake decreases as silica content increases to the percolation threshold of about 15 wt % and is then almost independent of composition. A scheme is proposed, which explains these results in terms of the existence of micelles, where a number of hydrophilic hydroxy groups are linked together, and their disentaglement by immersion into water. Diffusion coefficients of water depend on water content and are reduced on addition of silica above the percolation threshold. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methylphenylsiloxane)–poly(methyl methacrylate) graft copolymers (PSXE-g-PMMA) were prepared by condensation reaction of poly(methylphenylsiloxane)-containing epoxy resin (PSXE) with carboxyl-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and they were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), infrared (IR), and 29Si and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The microstructure of the PSXE-g-PMMA graft copolymer was investigated by proton spin–spin relaxation T2 measurements. The thermal stability and apparent activation energy for thermal degradation of these copolymers were studied by thermogravimetry and compared with unmodified PMMA. The incorporation of poly(methylphenylsiloxane) segments in graft copolymers improved thermal stability of PMMA and enhanced the activation energy for thermal degradation of PMMA. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polymers consisting of poly(heterocyclic methacrylate)s are considered as potential materials for clinical applications such as drug delivery and cartilage repair. Much of the success of these systems has been attributed to the complex nature of their water sorption properties. Dielectric permittivity is very sensitive to water sorption. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy studies have been carried out on two heterocyclic poly(methacrylate)s: poly(tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate) (PTHFMA) and poly(3‐methyl tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate) (P3MTHFMA). The isochrones representing the dielectric losses show in both cases high conductivity at low frequencies and high temperatures. In PTHFMA two conductive processes are observed, which can be associated to the existence of two types of water sorption. These effects have been analyzed and were removed from the dielectric spectra by using classical empirical equations. Both polymers show ostensible α‐relaxation centered in the vicinity of 350 K at 100 Hz. This relaxation was analyzed by means of the empirical Havriliak‐Negami equation. Reminiscent β‐relaxation could also exist. Both polymers present well defined γ and δ subglass absorptions at approximately 120 K, 160 K for PTHFMA and 125 K, 163 K for P3MTHFMA, at 100 Hz, associated to local intramolecular relaxations in side groups. These relaxations were analyzed using semiempirical symmetric model. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 46: 109–120, 2008  相似文献

Blends of isotactic (natural) poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are partially miscible, and PHB in excess of 20 wt % segregates as a partially crystalline pure phase. Copolymers containing atactic PHB chains grafted onto a PMMA backbone are used to compatibilize phase‐separated PHB/PMMA blends. Two poly(methyl methacrylate‐g‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(MMA‐g‐HB)] copolymers with different grafting densities and the same length of the grafted chain have been investigated. The copolymer with higher grafting density, containing 67 mol % hydroxybutyrate units, has a beneficial effect on the mechanical properties of PHB/PMMA blends with 30–50% PHB content, which show a remarkable increase in ductility. The main effect of copolymer addition is the inhibition of PHB crystallization. No compatibilizing effect on PHB/PMMA blends with PHB contents higher than 50% is observed with various amounts of P(MMA‐g‐HB) copolymer. In these blends, the graft copolymer is not able to prevent PHB crystallization, and the ternary PHB/PMMA/P(MMA‐g‐HB) blends remain crystalline and brittle. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper is concerned with the dependence of mechanical and thermal properties of heterogeneous blends of poly(carbonate) (PC) with poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA) and with poly(styrene) (PS) on the concentration of the components. PS displays a very weak phase coupling in blends with PC, whereas PMMA is characterized by a strong coupling to PC. Experimental results as well as predictions based on composite theories are reported. The general finding is that mechanical properties, such as the tensile modulus and the dynamic shear modulus, as well as thermal properties, such as thermal expansion, are (i) only weakly affected by the occurrence of a phase inversion and of a continuous phase morphology, (ii) vary continuously with the concentration of the components, and (iii) are rather insensitive to the strength of the phase coupling. The theoretical predictions on the concentration—property relationship for these properties, based on a self-consistent approach, agree very well with those observed experimentally. The elongation at break as well as the yield stress, on the other hand, are strongly influenced by the nature of the phase coupling: a discontinuous variation of these properties with the composition is observed for PS/PC blends but not for PMMA/PC blends. The general conclusion is that a set of mechanical and thermal properties of heterogeneous blends can satisfactorily be predicted on the basis of rather simple composite theories.  相似文献

The spin-label method was used to study the structure and molecular motion of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chains adsorbed on a silica-tethered poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Spin-labelled PEO with a narrow molecular weight distribution, having number averaged molecular weight (M N)=6.0×103, was adsorbed on the surface of the silica-tethered PMMA with various grafting ratios in carbon tetrachloride solution at 35?°C. ESR spectra were measured at various temperatures after the samples were completely dried. The ESR spectra are composed of two spectra arising from spin-labels attached to “train” and “tail” segments, which are strongly and weakly interacted with the silica surface, respectively. The fractional amount of the “tail” segments increases extremely with the grafting ratio of PMMA. Molecular mobility of the PEO chains estimated from the temperature dependence of the ESR spectra also decreases significantly with the grafting ratio of PMMA. Structure and molecular motion of the PMMA chains tethered on the silica were also studied using the spin-labelled PMMA. Consequently, parts of the PEO segments penetrate into the PMMA chains and is adsorbed on the silica surface (“train” segments), whereas parts of the PMMA segments protrude from the surface. The other PEO segments are entangled with the tethered PMMA chains (“tail” segments).  相似文献
