The average dynamics of immiscible fluids with different densities in a horizontal axially vibrating cylinder are studied. The angular velocity is sufficient to sustain the centrifuged state of the fluids. The vibration and rotation frequencies are of the same order. The generation of toroidal vortices periodic along the rotation axis and the formation of quasi-steady interface relief with axially periodic axisymmetric crimps are detected. It is shown that the vortex flow is associated with the generation of an inertial axisymmetric standing wave. The formation of the quasi-steady relief is induced by the development of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on the fluid interface under tangential vibration.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the dynamic analysis of a strongly nonlinear microrobot using a three-term harmonic balance method. The employed locomotion concept, namely “friction drive principle,” is based on the superposition of a horizontal vibration at the interface between the robot and work floor and an active variation of friction force, obtained by the vertical vibration of the base at the same interface. The equation of motion for the system reveals a parametrically excited oscillator with discontinuity for which the elastic force term is proportional to a signum function. The obtained periodic solution not only is of high accuracy, but also can predict the contribution of the friction coefficient in the average velocity of the slider. Results show that the velocity and the step efficiency of motion depend almost sinusoidally on the phase shift between the horizontal and the vertical vibration. Unlike traditional analytical techniques and in agreement with both numerical simulations and experimental results reported in the literature, the utilized method demonstrates that the maximum average velocity occurs at a phase shift that varies with respect to system’s configuration parameters. Besides, the effect of variation of different configuration parameters on the behavior of this type of microrobots has been studied and the maximum achievable performance in terms of velocity and the step efficiency has been evaluated.  相似文献

We consider the problem of steady convective flow during the directional solidification of a horizontal ternary alloy system rotating at a constant and low rate about a vertical axis. Under the limit of large far-field temperature, the flow region is modeled to be composed of two horizontal mushy layers, which are referred to here as a primary layer over a secondary layer. We first determine the basic state solution and then carry out linear stability analysis to calculate the neutral stability boundary and the critical conditions at the onset of motion. We find, in particular, that there are two flow solutions and each solution exhibits two neutral stability boundaries, and the flow can be multi-modal in the low rotating rate case with local minima on each neutral boundary. The critical Rayleigh number and the wave number as well as the vertical volume flux increase with the rotation rate, but the flow is found to be less stabilizing as compared to the binary alloy counterpart flow. The effects of low rotation rate increase the solid fraction and the liquid fraction at certain vertically oriented fluid lines, and the highest value of such increase is at a horizontal level close to the interface between the two mushy layers.  相似文献

The vibrations of a vessel strongly influence the behavior of the interface of the fluids in it. Thus, vertical vibrations can lead both to the parametric excitation of waves (Faraday ripples) and to the suppression of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability [1–2]. At the present time, the influence of vertical vibrations on the behavior of a fluid surface have been studied in sufficient detail (see, for example, review [3]). The behavior of an interface of fluids in the case of horizontal vibrations has been studied less. An interesting phenomenon has been revealed in the experimental papers [4, 5]: in the case of fairly strong horizontal vibrations of a vessel containing a fluid with a free surface, the fluid collects near one of the vertical vessel walls, the free surface being practically plane and stationary with respect to the vessel, while its angle of inclination to the horizon depends on the vibration rate. But if there is a system of immiscible fluids with comparable but different densities in the vessel, horizontal vibrations lead to the formation of a steady wave relief at the interface. An explanation of the behavior of a fluid with a free boundary was given in [6] on the basis of averaged equations of fluid motion in a vibrational field. The present paper is devoted to an analysis of the behavior of the interface of fluids with comparable densities in a high-frequency vibrational field. The onset of convection in a system of two horizontal layers (a pure liquid and a porous medium saturated with the same liquid) heated from below under the action of vertical vibration is investigated. For describing the free thermal convection, in the liquid layer the Boussinesq approximation and in the porous layer the Darcy-Boussinesq approximation are used. In the limiting case of a thin liquid layer, effective boundary conditions on the upper boundary of the porous layer with account for convection in the liquid layer are obtained and it is shown that vibration has a stabilizing effect, whereas the presence of a liquid layer leads to destabilization. For an arbitrary liquid to porous layer thickness ratio the onset of convection is investigated numerically. In the case of a thin liquid layer there are two (short-and long-wave) unstable modes. In the case of thick layers the neutral curves are unimodal. Vibration has a stabilizing effect on perturbations with any wave number but affects short-wave perturbations much more strongly than long-wave ones.  相似文献

The stability of a horizontal plane-channel flow of a dilute suspension is studied theoretically. It is shown that the mechanism of action of the sedimenting particles on the flow stability parameters is equivalent to the effect of a distributed flow stratification and is attributable to the vertical nonuniformity of the body force induced by the excess weight of the sedimenting particles. A strong dependence of the disturbance growth rate on the location of the interface between the suspension and the pure liquid is detected.  相似文献

The dynamics of two-dimensional waves of small but finite amplitude are theoretically studied for the case of a two-layer system bounded by a horizontal top and bottom. It is shown that for relatively large steady-state flow velocities and at certain fluid depth ratios the vertical velocity profile is nonlinear. An evolutionary equation governing the fluid interface disturbances and allowing for the long-wave contributions of the layer inertia and surface tension, the weak nonlinearity of the waves, and the unsteady friction on all the boundaries of the system is derived. Steady-state solutions of the cnoidal and solitary wave type for the disturbed flow are determined without regard for dissipation losses. It is found that the magnitude and the direction of the flow can alter not only the lengths of the waves but also their polarity.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, 2005, pp. 143–158. The equilibrium stability of a horizontal fluid layer with homogeneous internal heat release is investigated theoretically for the case in which the layer simultaneously undergoes high-frequency circular vibration in a horizontal plane and rotates about a vertical axis. The rotation frequency is assumed to be small as compared with the vibration frequency. It is found that the rotation has a stabilizing effect on the vibrational-gravitational convection. At the high-frequency limit the dependence of the critical values of the controlling parameters (gravitational and vibrational Rayleigh numbers) and the wave number on the rotation frequency is obtained.__________Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, 2005, pp. 53–61. The loss of stability of a vertical phase flow in a geothermal system in which a liquid layer overlies a vapor layer is considered. The loss of stability criteria are obtained in explicit form. It is found that when the physical parameters of the system are varied the transition to phase interface instability can be realized by means of one of the following mechanisms: the transition occurs spontaneously for any perturbation wavenumber (degenerate case); an unstable wavenumber arises at infinity; the instability threshold is determined by a double zero wavenumber. In the latter case the transition to instability is accompanied by simple resonance bifurcation. As a result of this bifurcation, secondary regimes dependent on the horizontal coordinate branch off from the basic regime describing the horizontally-homogeneous vertical phase flows.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Academii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, 2004, pp. 100–109. The stability of a free vertical liquid film under the combined action of gravity and thermocapillary forces has been studied. An exact solution of the Navier-Stokes and thermal conductivity equations is obtained for the case of plane steady flow with constant film thickness. It is shown that if the free surfaces of the film are perfectly heat insulated, the liquid flow rate through the cross section of the layer is zero. It is found that to close the model with consideration of the heat exchange with the environment, it is necessary to specify the liquid flow rate and the derivative of the temperature with respect to the longitudinal coordinate or the flow rate and the film thickness. The stability of the solution with constant film thickness at small wave numbers is studied. A solution of the spectral problem for perturbations in the form of damped oscillations is obtained.  相似文献

The wave instability of convective boundary layers in a horizontal cylindrical layer of ethanol under the action of vertical hamonic high-frequency vibration is studied. A strong destabilizing effect of the vibration on the stability of the convective boundary layers is detected. In the plane of the gravity and vibration Rayleigh numbers (Ra and R V ), the excitation limit of the wave instability is determined. The periods of the temperature oscillations caused by the waves in the boundary layers near the inner and outer cavity boundaries are studied as functions of the Rayleigh numbers. Perm’. The present paper examines the effect of vertical harmonic vibration on the onset of convection in an infinite horizontal layer of fluid saturating a porous medium. A constant temperature distribution is assigned on the rigid boundaries, so that there exists a vertical temperature gradient. The mathematical model is described by equations of filtration convection in the Darcy–Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation. The linear stability analysis for the quasi-equilibrium solution is performed using Floquet theory. Employment of the method of continued fractions allows derivation of the dispersion equation for the Floquet exponent σ in an explicit form. The neutral curves of the Rayleigh number Ra versus horizontal wave number α for the synchronous and subharmonic resonant modes are constructed for different values of frequency Ω and amplitude A of vibration. Asymptotic formulas for these curves are derived for large values of Ω using the method of averaging, and, for small values of Ω, using the WKB method. It is shown that, at some finite frequencies of vibration, there exist regions of parametric instability. Investigations carried out in the paper demonstrate that, depending on the governing parameters of the problem, vertical vibration can significantly affect the stability of the system by increasing or decreasing its susceptibility to convection.   相似文献

A linear stability analysis is carried out to predict the instability analysis in a dilute suspension of gyrotactic microorganisms in horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer influenced by high-frequency vertical vibration. The governing equations, describing the mean flow, are the time-averaged Boussinesq equations and the analytical solution of the problem has been obtained using Galerkin method. A secular relation involving bioconvection Rayleigh number and its vibrational analogs and other parameters have been established. The graphical interpretations for dependence of bioconvection Rayleigh–Darcy number and corresponding wave number, on gyrotactic number and bioconvection Péclet number in the presence of vibration are utilized to understand the problem.  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of vertical vibration on the stability of a dilute suspension of oxytactic microorganisms in a shallow horizontal fluid layer. For the case of high-frequency vibration, an averaging method is utilized to derive the equations describing the mean flow by decomposing the solutions of governing equations into two components: one that varies slowly with time, and a second that varies rapidly with time. Linear stability analysis is used to investigate the stability of the obtained averaged equations. It is predicted that high-frequency, low-amplitude vertical vibration has a stabilizing effect on a suspension of oxytactic microorganisms confined in a shallow horizontal layer. The average dynamics of the interface between a pure fluid and a granular medium with fluid-filled pores in a closed vibrating cavity are investigated experimentally. Three types of vibration, namely, linear and circular translational in a horizontal plane and rotational about a vertical axis, are considered. In all cases, the excitation of a dynamic relief on the surface of the granular medium, preceded by fluidization of the sand, is observed. For more complicated vibration types, additional average effects are manifested, such as the generation of an average granular-medium motion relative to the cavity under circular vibration and the displacement of the fluidized granular medium toward the rotation axis under rotational vibration. In the cases considered, the regularities of the average dynamics of the fluidized granular medium are found. It is shown that the phenomena in a granular-medium-fluid system can be analyzed using the two-fluid theoretical model.  相似文献

The problem of convection in the horizontal fluid layer with a wavy lower boundary is considered. It is shown that for the periodic temperature distribution with a certain phase shift given on the wavy boundary, in the fluid layer a unidirectional horizontal flow arises. The flow velocity linearly decreases with increase in attitude and depends on the relief distribution wavelength. There is an optimum wavelength (of the order of the layer thickness) at which the velocity reaches its maximum value.  相似文献

A numerical study has been undertaken to examine the behaviour of a gas liquid interface in a vertical cylindrical vessel subjected to a sinusoidal vertical motion. The computational method used is based on the simplified marker‐and‐cell method and includes a continuum surface model for the incorporation of surface tension. The numerical results indicate that the surface tension has very little effect on the period and amplitude of oscillations of the interfacial waves. The stability of the interfacial waves has been found to depend on the initial pressure pulse disturbance, and exponential growth of the interfacial wave has been observed in some cases. The influence of the amplitude and frequency of the forcing oscillations has also been investigated. The results are in good agreement with available experimental and analytical solutions. The stability of a steady flow of incompressible, conducting liquid down an inclined plane in the presence of longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields is studied. Solutions of the linearized magnetohydrodynamic equations with corresponding boundary conditions are found on the assumption that the Reynolds number Rg and the wave number are small. It is shown that the longitudinal magnetic field plays a stabilizing role. It is known [1] that the flow of a viscous liquid over a vertical wall is always unstable. In this article it is shown that the instability effect at small wave numbers may be eliminated if the longitudinal magnetic field satisfies the conditions found. The case when the Alfvén number and the wave number are small and the Reynolds number is finite is also examined.  相似文献

The present work deals with temporal stability properties of a falling liquid film down an inclined plane in the presence of a parallel subsonic gas flow. The waves are described by evolution equation previously derived as a generalization of the model for the Newtonian liquid. We confirm linear stability results of the basic flow using the Orr–Sommerfeld analysis to that obtained by long wave approximation analysis. The non-linear stability criteria of the model are discussed analytically and stability branches are obtained. Finally, the solitary wave solutions at the liquid–gas interface are discussed, using specially envelope transform and direct ansatz approach to Ginzburg–Landau equation. The influence of different parameters governing the flow on the stability behavior of the system is discussed in detail.  相似文献

The solution of the problem of nonlinear generation of periodic internal waves by a boundary flow on a vertical cylinder or a horizontal disk performing torsional oscillations in an exponentially stratified fluid is constructed. The calculations are in satisfactory agreement with the results of experiments in which both horizontal and inclined disks of various diameters and a model propeller performing periodic torsional oscillations, including oscillations against a background of uniform rotation, are used as perturbation sources. The experiments were carried out over a wide range of parameters including the laminar, transition, and turbulent flow regimes. The limits of applicability of the proposed analytic theory of wave radiation are determined.  相似文献
