Packing, covering and tiling is a fascinating subject in pure mathematics. It mainly deals with arrangement patterns and efficiencies of geometric objects. This subject has a long and rich history, even back to Kepler, Newton, Lagrange and Gauss. Inspired by its applications and with the help of computing methods, in recent years it has become a very active research area in mathematics once again. Most of the fundamental problems in this subject can be characterized as simple sounding but challenging. This subject has important applications in many other areas such as Number Theory, Logic, Complex Analysis, Optimization, Coding Theory, Crystallography, Material Science, Industry, and even Biology. In spite of the long history, many of its key problems are still open, even in the plane. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review for packing, covering and tiling in the two-dimensional spaces. We study here a number of questions raised by examining the fundamental groups of complicated one-dimensional spaces. The first half of the paper considers one-dimensional spaces as such. The second half proves related results for general spaces that are needed in the first half but have independent interest. Among the results we prove are the theorem that the fundamental group of a separable, connected, locally path connected, one-dimensional metric space is free if and only if it is countable if and only if the space has a universal cover and the theorem that the fundamental group of a compact, one-dimensional, connected metric space embeds in an inverse limit of finitely generated free groups and is shape injective. 相似文献

Let Mm be the formal scheme which represents the functor of deformations of a one-dimensional formal module over equipped with a level-m-structure. By work of Boyer (in equal characteristic) and Harris and Taylor, the ?-adic étale cohomology of the generic fibre Mm of Mm realizes simultaneously the local Langlands and Jacquet-Langlands correspondences. The proofs given so far use Drinfeld modular varieties or Shimura varieties to derive this local result. In this paper we show without the use of global moduli spaces that the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence is realized by the Euler-Poincaré characteristic of the cohomology. Under a certain finiteness assumption on the cohomology groups, it is shown that the correspondence is realized in only one degree. One main ingredient of the proof consists in analyzing the boundary of the deformation spaces and in studying larger spaces which can be considered as compactifications of the spaces Mm. 相似文献

We compare relative cohomology theories arising from using different proper resolutions of modules. Criteria for the vanishing of such distinctions are given in certain cases, and we show that this is related to the generalized Tate cohomology theory. We also demonstrate that the two balance properties admitted by the two different cohomology theories are actually equivalent in some cases. As applications, we recover many results obtained earlier in various contexts. At last we investigate derived functors with respect to the Auslander and Bass classes. 相似文献

Given a cotriple 𝔾 = (G, ε, δ) on a category X and a functor E:X Opp→A into an abelian category A, there exists the cohomology theory of Barr and Beck: Hn(X, E) ε |A| (n ≥ 0, X ε |X|), ([1], p.249). Almost all the important cohomology theories in mathematics have been shown to be special instances of such a general theory (see [1], [2] and [3]).
