Abstract

The problems of photoinitiator contamination are addressed for the liquid crystal phase in polymer dispersed liquid crystal films formed by photopolymerization induced phase separation of liquid crystal from monomer solutions. Initiator contamination lowers the clearing point of the liquid crystal phase, and decreases the photostability and resistivity of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal. These problems are minimized by replacing the conventional photoinitiators with copolymerizable initiators which become incorporated in the polymer phase as it separates. Copolymerizable photoinitiators are studied and used to form polymer dispersed liquid crystals with higher clearing point liquid crystal phases, higher resistivity, and better photostability than polymer dispersed liquid crystals formed with conventional photoinitiators. These improvements provide very significant advantages for many polymer dispersed liquid crystal applications.  相似文献

Reverse mode operation shutters have been achieved with polymer dispersed liquid crystals by means of polymerization-induced phase separation of nematic mixtures consisting of a low molecular mass liquid crystal and a liquid crystalline monomer. Fluid mixtures were homeotropically aligned by rough surfaces and transparent films were obtained after polymerization. Transmittance in the OFF state can be larger than 80% and decreases to less than 1% when an electric field of about 2 V μm-1 at 1 kHz is applied (ON state). Both rise and decay times can be lower than 10 ms and the drop in the OFF state normal transmittance is drastically reduced with respect to conventional polymer dispersed liquid crystals since samples exhibit a reverse morphology. The role played by surface roughness is also discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of the polymerization induced phase separation of liquid crystal (LC)/monomer mixture has been investigated by means of depolarized light intensity technique and polarized light microscope (PLM). To examine the effect of the electric field, a DC electric field was applied across the mixtures during the phase separation process. The kinetic study indicates that the phase separation process is accelerated when the electric field is applied. The morphologies of the formed polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films were observed by PLM. The electric field applied during the phase separation process yields the PDLC with small LC domains and fine morphologies. The clearing temperature (TNI) of the formed PDLC films was measured by the PLM and it is found that the TNI increases with the applied electric field intensity.  相似文献

The induction of liquid crystal orientation through mechanical stretching was investigated for polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) by means of infrared dichroism. Using a nematic liquid crystal BL006 and polyacrylic acid as the polymer matrix, it was possible to stretch the PDLC films with BL006 in either the isotropic or the nematic phase. After cooling the films under strain to room temperature, the molecular orientation of BL006 was found to be much higher for films that contained isotropic liquid droplets of BL006 at the time of stretching than for films that had nematic droplets. Stretching PDLC films with isotropic droplets results in no molecular orientation, but the orientation is induced during the subsequent cooling when BL006 goes through the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition. Interestingly for PAA/BL006, the nematic director orients along the long axes of the elongated droplets despite liquid crystal anchoring perpendicular to the polymer interface.  相似文献

Dispersing liquid crystal droplets in a rigid polymer matrix results in an electrically controllable light scattering medium. A polymer with high glass transition temperature phase-separated with a low molecular weight liquid-crystalline material is a good binder for polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC). Main-chain liquid-crystalline epoxies were synthesized for the phase separation with low molecular weight nematic liquid crystals E7 (mixture of 4-alkyl-4′-cyanobiphenyls) and studied for their mesomorphic properties and response to an applied electrical field.  相似文献

A novel polymer‐dispersed liquid‐crystal film consisting of micrometer‐scale liquid‐crystal droplets in ultraviolet‐cured polymer composite matrices with cholesteric order was prepared and the influence of cure temperature on the phase separation was studied. The existence and pitch of the ethyl cyanoethyl cellulose cholesteric liquid‐crystalline phase were influenced by the existence of low molecular weight liquid crystals. The macromolecular cholesteric phase disappeared when the 4′‐n‐pentyl‐4‐cyano‐biphenyl concentration was over 40 wt %, and 4′‐n‐pentyl‐4‐cyano‐biphenyl domains were dispersed in the isotropic matrix of the polymer composite. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are materials composed of liquid crystal microdroplets dispersed in a polymer matrix. Their electro-optic properties make them useful for applications as large-area electrically switchable architectural windows (smart windows). For these applications, the key parameters of performance are the haze (both normal and offaxis) and the opacity. In the present work we show how it is possible to prepare a high performance smart window by controlling the haze and opacity of PDLC films using the polymer induced phase separation (PIPS) method.  相似文献

An investigation of the electrooptic properties of polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) is presented. These materials are light modulating systems. They show a reversible optical response from an opaque state to a highly transmitting state under the action of an appropriate electric field which aligns the liquid crystal director. The switching voltage required to establish such an electric field has been monitored as a function of (i) the starting materials used for the preparation of the PDLCs, (ii) the ageing (curing time) of the PDLC cells. Other physical properties, such as the electrical resistivity and the dielectric constant of the materials, have been measured. The correlations between these properties have been studied. The PDLC switching voltage appears to be strongly correlated with the resistivity. Our data suggest that ionic impurities play a dominant role with respect to the electrooptic response of PDLC films.  相似文献

以基于单糖为内核,楔形液晶基元DOBOB酸(3,4,5-三[对-(十二烷氧基)苄氧基]苯甲酸)为分枝的树状碳水化合物液晶为研究对象,利用DSC、热台偏光显微镜、XRD和CD/UV光谱等手段研究该类化合物的液晶性.研究发现分枝的数目对该类化合物的液晶性有显著影响,以2-乙酰氨基葡萄糖为内核的包含四个分枝的树状分子具有最高的液晶结构有序性,清亮点也显著高于另两种单糖内核(含五个分枝)的树状分子.此外,该类碳水化合物液晶形成的液晶相都具备超分子手性,为探索碳水化合物手性液晶相提供了一条新的思路.  相似文献

以不具有液晶行为的2,6-二[N,N′-二-(4-烷基苯甲酰基)]氨基吡啶(A系列)和4-正烷氧基苯甲酸(D系列)作为氢键液晶复合物的单体,组装成T-型氢键液晶系列复合物(AmDn)。用红外光谱对其结构进行了表征,用DSC及偏光显微方法对其液晶行为进行了研究。结果表明:所合成的21种复合物分子间存在氢键且都具有向列相。通过调整2,6-二[N,N′-二-(4-烷基苯甲酰基)]氨基吡啶分子上柔性烷基的长度和极性,可以有效地调节它与4-烷氧基苯甲酸形成的氢键复合物的液晶相变温度以及液晶态的稳定性;增加2,6-二[N,N′-二-(4-烷基苯甲酰基)]氨基吡啶分子上柔性烷基的长度,其复合物AmDn的液晶相温度范围趋于变窄,清亮点逐渐下降,其液晶态稳定性也逐渐下降;以2,6-二[N,N′-二-(4-烷基苯甲酰基)]氨基吡啶分子替代2,6-二[N,N′-二-(4-烷氧基苯甲酰基)]氨基吡啶分子,可以降低分子的极性,使其单体的熔点及其氢键复合物AmDn的相变温度下降。  相似文献

The response times and operating voltages of light shutters formed from polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have been studied experimentally and the results compared with calculations based on non-sperhically shaped nematic droplet models. The experiments were performed on light shutters with elongated and uniformly aligned droplets where the relaxation time and voltage response were measured. It is shown that the droplet shape can be a dominant factor, particularly for the relaxation time, and the data are compared with equations derived in terms of the aspect ratio of the droplet l = a/b, where a and b are the lengths of the semi-major and semi-minor axes, respectively, of the elongated droplet. It is further demonstrated that the electric field inside the droplet can be considerably smaller than the applied field, due to the conductivity and dielectric properties of the polymer and liquid crystal materials. These data are used to obtain values for the ratio of the conductivities of the polymer binder and liquid crystal droplet, as well as the anisotropy of the conductivity in the liquid crystal.  相似文献

Such surfaces are able to keep the photopolymerizable mixtures homeotropically aligned without the use of any aligning polymer substrate. OFF state transmittances are always larger than 80% and the switching fields decrease if the non-reactive liquid crystal percentage is increased. 以4-烷基环己基甲酸和4-溴-2,3-二氟苯酚为原料,经格氏、黄鸣龙还原、碘代、芳基硼酸化、Suzuki偶联、威廉姆逊和酯化等反应,合成24种侧向二氟取代联苯类液晶化合物,总收率4.2%~8.7%,产物的分子结构经核磁(1H NMR,13C NMR)、红外和质谱确认。 利用差示扫描量热仪(DSC)和偏光显微镜(POM)对目标化合物进行了液晶性能测试。 结果表明,烷基链的长度不仅影响化合物的熔点和清亮点,还影响液晶相态变化;端烯可以降低化合物的熔点(降低了3.7 ℃),提高清亮点(提高了24.8 ℃),拓宽向列相区间(由54.1 ℃拓宽到82.6 ℃);酯基的引入可以提高清亮点,有助于消除近晶相。 该系列化合物在垂直取向(VA)和平面转换(IPS)显示模式中具有潜在的应用前景。  相似文献

The structure of the reverse micellar cubic (I2) liquid crystal and the adjacent micellar phase in amphiphilic block copolymer/water/oil systems has been studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), rheometry, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Upon addition of water to the copolymer/oil mixture, spherical micelles are formed and grow in size until a disorder-order transition takes place, which is related to a sudden increase in the viscosity and shear modulus. The transition is driven by the packing of the spherical micelles into a Fd3m cubic lattice. The single-phase I2 liquid crystals show gel-like behavior and elastic moduli higher than 104 Pa, as determined by oscillatory measurements. Further addition of water induces phase separation, and it is found that reverse water-in-oil emulsions with high internal phase ratio and stabilized by I2 liquid crystals can be prepared in the two-phase region. Contrary to liquid-liquid emulsions, both the elastic modulus and the viscosity decrease with the fraction of dispersed water, due to a decrease in the crystalline fraction in the sample, although the reverse emulsions remain gel-like even at high volume fractions of the dispersed phase. A temperature induced order-disorder transition can be detected by calorimetry and rheometry. Upon heating the I2 liquid crystals, two thermal events associated with small enthalpy values were detected: one endothermic, related to the "melting" of the liquid crystal, and the other exothermic, attributed to phase separation. The melting of the liquid crystal is associated with a sudden drop in viscosity and shear moduli. Results are relevant for understanding the formation of cubic-phase-based reverse emulsions and for their application as templates for the synthesis of structured materials.  相似文献

In-plane switching (IPS) of liquid crystals showed advantageous voltage-holding ratio (VHR) characteristics so that liquid crystals with low resistivity could provide higher VHRs compared with the twisted nematic effect. This experimental result was obtained when electric fields were applied approximately parallel to the substrate plane using the IPS electro-optical effect. We found that the in-plane electric field generates supplementary capacities which support retention of an externally applied voltage over the liquid crystal layer during non-selected periods of the active matrix driving scheme, because the liquid crystal layer can be connected with an insulating layer, an orientation layer and even a substrate in parallel. Based on these advantageous VHR characteristics, liquid crystal materials suitable for the IPS effect were appropriately optimized. We propose evaluation parameters, derived from the physical switching principles of the liquid crystals, to obtain lower driving voltage and faster response speeds. These parameters are effective in optimizing the physical properties of liquid crystals without variation of the cell gap. We use the proposed evaluation parameters and the advantageous VHR characteristics to demonstrate the optimization approach and we suggest a novel possible use of liquid crystal materials with low resistivity which cannot be implemented conventionally. Finally, we prove that liquid crystals with low resistivity generate the Ir internal potential by the drift of ionic species.  相似文献
