We present angular-resolved photoemission investigations of the Shockley-type surface state on the reconstructed (111) surface of gold. The so-called herringbone reconstruction, with three different 22×31/2domain orientations, forms a super-lattice that has a clearly observable influence on the surface electronic structure. In the L gap of the projected bulk states, there appears a non-uniform photoemission intensity distribution due to the back-folding of the Shockley state at the Bragg planes of the reduced surface Brillouin zone. Furthermore, there is a clear indication of the existence of surface-state band gaps in the electronic density of states of the Shockley state. PACS 73.20.At; 68.35.Bs; 79.60.Bm  相似文献

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of a surface state on Cu(111) covered by various thicknesses of Ag. The growth mode of Ag on Cu(111) was determined to be layer-by-layer despite the large mismatch between the two lattices. The Cu(111) surface state was observed to evolve monotonically for increasing Ag overlayer thickness to eventually become the Ag(111) surface state. The measured rate of shift of the surface state binding energy can be explained qualitatively in terms of the degree of localization of the surface-state wave functions.  相似文献

The electron-phonon interaction on the Au(111) surface is studied theoretically. It is shown that the measured temperature dependence of the linewidth of a surface electronic state agrees with the theoretical results if thermally activated point defects on the surface are taken into account.  相似文献

In situ grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction studies of reconstructed Au(111) electrodes in aqueous electrolyte solutions are presented, which reveal a significantly increased compression of the Au surface layer during Au electrodeposition as compared to Au(111) surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions or in the Au-free electrolyte. The compression increases towards more negative potentials, reaching 5.3% at the most negative potentials studied. It may be explained within a simple thermodynamic model by a release of potential-induced surface stress.  相似文献

An angle-resolved photoemission study using synchrotron radiation has been carried out to investigate the adsorption of NO on Ag(111). At 150 K, NO is adsorbed molecularly on the Ag(111) surface. The NO molecule is found to have an upright orientation from a study using incidence angle dependent measurements and symmetry selection rules. The upright orientation is also confirmed from the study of the shape resonance of the 5σ level. Photon induced dissociation of the chemisorbed NO was observed and is briefly discussed.  相似文献

A photoemission study, using a synchrotron source, on the deposition of submonolayer amounts of Au on Pt(111) has been performed. The Au 4f emission shifts continuously to higher binding energies for increasing Au coverages. A good fit to the experimental spectra has been obtained by only one Doniac-Sunjic function. We discuss the initial versus final state effects in photoemission experiments on small supported particles.  相似文献

The effect of ultrahigh vacuum deposition of Ge below and at monolayer (ML) coverage onto a 7 × 7 reconstructed clean Si(111) surface held at room temperature is studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and photoemission yield spectroscopy (PYS). The results are compared to those obtained on 2 × 1 reconstructed clean Si(111) : (i) the Si dangling bond states are replaced by Ge dangling bond states at submonolayer coverages in both cases; (ii) the 7 × 7 reconstruction persists below 1 ML, it is not replaced by a ? 3 × ? 3 R30° at 1/3ML as it was on the 2 × 1; and (iii) the coverage below 1 ML is not homogeneous on the 7 × 7 reconstruction. This behaviour can be explained by the influence of the inhomogeneties associated with the 7 × 7 reconstruction.  相似文献

Experiments with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) are reported which include the first surface topographic images of Au(111), cleaned and annealed in ultrahigh vacuum. The STM system used for this work includes in situ sample manipulation for sample cleaning, annealing and characterization. Topographs with very large atomically flat (111) regions are obtained and no corrugation on the scale of about 0.1 Å is observed. Some single atomic steps are observed. Surprisingly, ordered arrays of single steps are observed over a large region. These represent a type of surface reconstruction whose repeat period agrees with values derived from previous LEED, TEM and ion scattering measurements. These results represent the first critical information about the surface topography of the Au(111) surface.  相似文献

It is shown, that the well-known d-electron Tamm surface-state emission observed in photoelectron spectra from Cu(111) at the point in the surface Brillouin zone, is indeed due to such a surface state and not a bulk band transition as recently suggested L. Au/Pt(111) has been studied by spin-, angle- and energy-resolved photoemission with normal incident circularly polarized synchrotron radiation of BESSY and normal photoelectron emission for different Au coverages. The prepared layers were characterized by LEED and Augerelectron spectroscopy and turned out to grow up two dimensional and epitaxially. In the photoemission experiments the development of the 3-dimensional bandstructure in the -direction could be observed. For a coverage of 2.6 layers the highest occupied spin-orbit split bands are located at about 0.6 eV lower binding energy than the corresponding bands for a 3D-Au crystal and show dispersion which is, however, weaker than in a 3D-Au crystal. A 5 layer Au adsorbate was found to have already the same dispersion and energetic location as a Au(111)-crystal. For thick gold layers, which behave in photoemission like Au(111)-crystals, we find structures that cannot be due to direct transitions into a free electron like final band. The coverage dependence and spin polarization of these structures show that some of them are due to surface resonances, while the origin of one strong peak could not yet be explained conclusively. In addition we find strong hybridization and two avoided crossings in the occupied part of the bandstructure.  相似文献

Adsorption of chalcogen atoms on metal surfaces has attracted increasing interest for both the fundamental research and industrial applications. Here, we report a systematic study of selenium(Se) adsorption on Au(111) at varies substrate temperatures by scanning tunneling microscopy. At room temperature, small Se clusters are randomly dispersed on the surface. Increasing the temperature up to 200℃, a well-ordered lattice of Se molecules consisting of 8 Se atoms in ringlike structure is formed. Further increasing the temperature to 250℃ gives rise to the formation of Se monolayer with Au(111)-3~(1/2) ×3~(1/2) lattices superimposed with a quasi-hexagonal lattice. Desorption of Se atoms rather than the reaction between the Se atoms and the Au substrate occurs if further increasing the temperature. The ordered structures of selenium monolayers could serve as templates for self-assemblies and our findings in this work might provide insightful guild for the epitaxial growth of the two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides.  相似文献

Pronounced angle-of-incidence and polarization dependences of the photoemission yields from Cu(111) and Au(111) were observed in the photon energy range of 3.4–5.0 eV with the interfacial photoemission-into-electrolyte technique. Strong evidence was obtained that these vectorial features are due to the anisotropic bulk excitation of photoelectrons and restrictive escape condition of parallel k-vector conservation. Calculations, based upon a simple model of anisotropic bulk photoemission, show good agreement with the experimental results.  相似文献
