The effects of urea on aqueous solutions of both poly(methacrylic acid (PMA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) have been investigated by using potentiometry, viscometry and study of the fluorescence of Auramine O, a cationic dye. The viscosity behaviour of unionized PMA obtained from direct dissolution of solid powder shows that the unneutralized macromolecules can be associated in water. The stability of such “aggregates” seems weak as indicated by their disappearance as soon as the charge density is very low. For PMA salt solution percolated through a cation (H+) exchange resin column, no association is observed. The pH-dependent conformational behaviour of PMA which, contrary to PAA, presents compact conformations in water at low charge density is discussed in terms of solvophobic/solvophilic interactions. It is shown that, even for urea concentration up to 8 M, the compact conformations of PMA are not completely destroyed. The formation of H+/urea complex is taken into account.  相似文献

This work reports the formation and detailed characterization of the γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) inclusion compounds (ICs) formed with two poly (vinyl chloride) samples with different isotactic content. The ICs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, solid state 13C-NMR, solution 1H-NMR, FT-infrared, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Experimental evidence of the inclusion of the guest polymer chains into the narrow channels created by the γ-CD crystalline host lattice has been obtained. Examination of coalesced poly (vinyl chlorides) (PVCs) obtained after the host γ-CD is removed reveals different characteristics specifically for the coalesced PVC sample with higher isotactic content. An increase in Tg was observed by DSC for this PVC. To the contrary, the Tg of the coalesced PVC sample with lower isotactic content is almost the same as that of the as-synthesized sample. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that coalesced PVC with higher isotactic content acquires a degree of stabilization after modification by threading into and being extracted from its γ-CD IC. The results suggest that an irreversible conformational change takes place when PVC forms ICs with a solid host lattice like γ-CD. The PVC molecules extend and reorganize into a more stable conformation in the IC, consequently improving the properties of the coalesced sample. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The binding properties of trivalent metal ions to polyelectrolytes were investigated through the use of terbium [Tb(III)] in fluorescence studies. The fluorescence intensity and lifetimes of the lanthanide ions are directly dependent upon the number of water molecules bound to their inner coordination sphere. The more efficiently a ligand coordinates to a lanthanide ion, the more water molecules are expelled and consequently, the greater the fluorescence intensity and lifetime. This effect was used to probe for differences in the complexation behavior of tactic polymers. Aqueous solutions of isotactic and syndiotactic poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) were neutralized and complexed with Tb(III) ions. The fluorescence intensity of the 286 nm hypersensitive excitation band was monitored and the lifetimes were measured using several excitation wavelengths. It was found that the isotactic PMA/Tb(III) complex exhibited a six times greater fluorescence intensity than the syndiotactic PMA complex. Lifetime measurements gave the number of water molecules coordinated by Tb(III) in the isotactic complex to be 2.4 while 3.4 waters remained bound to the Tb(III) ion in the syndiotactic PMA complex. These results indicate that isotactic PMA has the greater binding affinity towards Tb(III) ions. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The osmotic pressure of weakly charged aqueous poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) solutions and the swelling pressure PAA gels were studied by osmotic deswelling at different degrees of ionization (α). In solution, the osmotic pressure was found to scale linearly with concentration, whereas the scaling power of the swelling pressure of gels was higher (1.66). The effect of the ionization degree on the osmotic coefficient in PAA solutions was in agreement with the theory of Borue and Erukhimovich [Macromolecules, 21 , 3240 (1988)]. Ionization increases the swelling capacity of the PAA gels until a plateau is reached at about 35% neutralization. The concentration at equilibrium swelling scales as Ce ~ α?0.6. The contribution of the network to the gel swelling pressure is evaluated by subtracting the osmotic pressure of the polymer solution at the same concentration and degree of ionization. In swollen gels the extended network opposes swelling. As the gel is osmotically deswelled, a state of zero network pressure exists at a certain concentration, below which the network elasticity favors swelling. The crossover concentration shifts to lower values as the degrees of ionization increases. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A coarse-grained model has been developed for asymmetrically substituted poly(silylenemethylene)s in which the side chain is a flexible spacer terminated by a biphenyl unit. Each monomer unit is represented by four coarse-grained beads that interact via a Lennard–Jones potential and are subject to the first- and second-order interactions deduced from the atomistically detailed model. Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations were performed for isolated syndiotactic, isotactic, and atactic chains. Snapshots from the equilibrated coarse-grained chain on the discrete space of a high coordination lattice were reverse-mapped to atomistically detailed structures in continuous space. At 373 K, the chains were disordered independent of the stereochemical composition. The occupancy of bond pairs depended on the stereochemical composition, with the trans-gauche (tg) sequence being favored by the isotactic chain. When the simulation was performed with the backbone constrained to specific periodic structures, the g helix was the lowest energy structure for either the atactic or isotactic chains. For the syndiotactic chain, the g and gt helices were favored. The appearance of the g helix as the favored periodic structure of the isolated chain was consistent with the chain conformation reported previously for the smectic phase of this polymer in the bulk state. The g helix was disrupted when the backbone was allowed to access nonhelical conformations, even though these conformations may have been slightly higher in energy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of granulated semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) superabsorbent hydrogels composed of chitosan‐g‐poly(acrylic acid) (CTS‐g‐PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared by solution polymerization using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The effects of reaction conditions such as the concentration of MBA, the weight ratio of AA to CTS, and the content of PVA on water absorbency were investigated. Infrared (IR) spectra and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses confirmed that AA had been grafted onto CTS backbone, and PVA semi‐interpenetrating into CTS‐g‐PAA networks. SEM analyses indicated that CTS‐g‐PAA/PVA has improved porous surface and PVA was uniformly dispersed in CTS‐g‐PAA network. The semi‐IPN hydrogel containing 10 wt% PVA shows the highest water absorbency of 353 and 53 g g?1 in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. Swelling behaviors revealed that the introduction of PVA could improve the swelling rate and enhance the pH stability of the superabsorbent hydrogel. Self‐association in aqueous solution of amphiphilic poly(acrylic acid)‐b‐poly(propylene oxide)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) (PAA‐b‐PPO‐b‐PAA) copolymers having various outer PAA block lengths are presented. These copolymers show two thermosensitive behaviors. The first one, due to hydrogen bonds between PAA and PPO resulting in large aggregates, was observed by visible spectroscopy. The second one, due to the association of PPO middle block into aggregates, was evidenced by dynamic light scattering and pyrene fluorescence. These critical temperatures both depend on the ionization and the length of PAA blocks. The characterization of the aggregates above the critical aggregation concentration by fluorescence quenching experiments showed a very low aggregation number corresponding to dimers or trimers association depending on the conditions. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) is a disubstituted vinyl chain in which the substituents CO2CH2CH2OH and CH3 differ in size and shape. In order to verify the various characteristics of the PHEMA chain, the conformational energy calculations for meso and racemic diads, which are the segments consisting of the stereoregular isotactic and syndiotactic chains, respectively, were carried out using ECEPP/2 potential. From these calculations, the averaged geometry and the statistical weights were obtained in a local minima. The characteristic ratio, C∞ = (〈r2o/nl2)∞, was determined from the statistical weights and geometries. The calculated C∞ for the isotactic and syndiotactic chain are 10.2 and 2.3, respectively. The characteristic ratio for isotactic chain is larger than that for syndiotactic chain. This shows that the syndiotactic chain is more folded than the isotactic chain is, and that the calculated tendency is in reasonably agreement with the experimental tendency of acrylate polymers.  相似文献

Poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) samples were found to exhibit up to three glass transition temperatures Tg, corresponding to the whole chain and the syndiotactic and isotactic stereoblocks. An increasing tendency to multiple Tgs, and hence to phase separation, was observed with increasing isotacticity. Limiting values at infinite molecular weight for syndiotactic and isotactic PVK were obtained from correlations of the Tgs corresponding to the syndiotactic and isotactic stereoblocks with their respective average stereoblock lengths derived from 13C NMR measurements. They were found to be 549 and 399 K, respectively. The conventional Tg for PVK was found to exhibit the following dependence upon the syndiotactic dyad mole fraction Xs: The molecular weight dependences of the conventional Tgs for several fractionated PVK samples obeyed a Fox–Flory-type relation with values of ?dTg/d(1/M) varying between 7.6 × 103 for isotactic PVK and 2.7 × 105 for Luvican M 170.  相似文献

pt‐Butyl calix[4]arene diol (distal cone) (1) was grafted with poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) to obtain hydrophobically modified PAA (PAA‐C) bearing calixarene moieties. The grafting method includes the direct esterification reaction of PAA with calixarene diol 1 which was carried out in a system of tosyl chloride (TsCl), pyridine (Py), and N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The grafting yield was studied using different molar ratios of PAA to calix[4]arene diol 1, temperature, and reaction time. The chemical composition of the PAA‐C was studied by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Also, the morphology of PAA‐C was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The PAA‐C had different solubility and thermal properties. The extraction ability measurements of modified PAA toward alkali metal cations (Na+, K+, Cs+) and Ag+ showed a remarkable efficiency and selectivity of PAA‐C toward Na+. The main goal of this work was to design hydrophobically modified PAA with binding ability that is suitable for ion selective membranes and chemical sensor devices such as ion‐specific electrodes, semipermeable membranes, and quartz microbalances. The activity coefficient γ, of sodium ion, in aqueous solutions of both isotactic and conventional poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) has been studies throughout the whole range of degree of neutralization α with a Beckman Na electrode and membrane electrodes. The results show that the fraction of sodium ions bound to isotactic PMA is higher than that bound to conventional (or syndiotactic) PMA over the entire range of α. The binding of divalent counterions (Mg+2, Cu+2, Co+2, and Ni+2) by the two forms of PMA (at α = 0.95) has been evaluated from the release of Na+ ions with the Beckman Na electrode. Turbidimetric determinations of the critical amount of various divalent cation chlorides necessary to bring about precipitation of both isotactic and conventional PMA (at α = 0.95) have also been carried out.  相似文献

Poly(mandelic acid) (PMA) is an aryl analogue of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and a biodegradable analogue of polystyrene. The preparation of stereoregular PMA was realized using a pyridine/mandelic acid adduct (Py?MA) as an organocatalyst for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of the cyclic O‐carboxyanhydride (manOCA). Polymers with a narrow polydispersity index and excellent molecular‐weight control were prepared at ambient temperature. These highly isotactic chiral polymers exhibit an enhancement of the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of 15 °C compared to the racemic polymer, suggesting potential future application as high‐performance commodity and biomedical materials.  相似文献

Preparation of poly(phosphonoacetals) (PPA) by transacetalation of poly(vinyl alcohol) with diethyl-phosphonoacetal is described. PPA with a degree of substitution of 60% is an alcoholsoluble polymer with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 67°C. High resolution 1H and 13C NMR spectra reveal the presence of hemiacetals alongside the six-membered acetal ring with an approximate ratio of 2:8 of these substituents. A possible correlation between the microtacticity of the parent PVA and the structure of PPA is indicated; the syndiotactic and isotactic sequences on the parent polymer controls the relationship between the two pendant groups.  相似文献

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic measurements have been undertaken to estimate the conformational energies of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) cast films in the temperature range of 40–130°C. The temperature dependence of the IR spectra in the C=O stretching region has been analyzed to yield the side-chain and backbone conformational energies. The estimated energies are close to those previously obtained by polarized Raman spectroscopic measurements for PAA solutions. Combining the FTIR value of conformational energy with the simplified rotational isomeric state (RIS) model proposed in the Raman analysis provides a persistence length in accordance with earlier SAXS experiments. The data also agree with the Gibbs-DiMarzio predictions, further substantiating the validity of the analysis. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys, 35: 507–515, 1997  相似文献

Electrostatic interactions within a semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) gel can control the postsynthesis loading, long‐term retention, and subsequent release of small‐molecule cationic antibiotics. Here, electrostatic charge is introduced into an otherwise neutral gel [poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)] by physically entrapping high‐molecular‐weight poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The network structure is characterized by small‐angle neutron scattering. PEG/PAA semi‐IPN gels absorb over 40 times more antibiotic than PAA‐free PEG gels. Subsequent soaking in physiological buffer (pH 7.4; 0.15 M NaCl) releases the loaded antibiotics for periods as long as 30 days. The loaded gels elute antibiotics with diffusivities of 4.46 × 10?8 cm2/s (amikacin) and 2.08 × 10?8 cm2/s (colistin), which are two orders of magnitude less than those in pure PEG gels where diffusion is controlled purely by gel tortuosity. The release and hindered diffusion can be understood based on the partial shielding of the charged groups within the loaded gel, and they have a significant effect on the antimicrobial properties of these gels. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal structures of clathrate forms of syndiotactic poly(m-methylstyrene) containing guest molecules having different steric hindrance (CS2, benzene and orto-dichlorobenzene) are presented. The structures are all characterized by polymer chains in s (2/1)2 helical conformation and guest molecules packed in an orthorhombic unit cell according to the space group Pcaa. All the presented clathrates belongs to β class indipendently from the dimensions of the guest molecule. In this aspect they differ both from clathrate forms of syndiotactic polystyrene, all belonging to α class, and from clathrate forms of syndiotactic poly(p-methylstyrene) that belong to α or β class according to the steric hindrance of the guest molecule.  相似文献

A poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sample was chlorinated in solution in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile and by the fluid‐bed method. The aim was to evaluate the scope of the stereoselectivity of the chlorination reaction. The quantitative microstructural analysis of the residual PVC with a degree of chlorination was followed by 13C NMR spectroscopy. From the evolution of the content of isotactic (mm), heterotactic (mr), and syndiotactic (rr) triads and of mmmm, mmmr, and rmmr isotactic pentads in the unchlorinated parts of the polymer, it was unambiguously inferred that the chlorination reaction proceeds by a stereoselective mechanism in that the mr heterotactic triads are the most reactive structures followed by the isotactic triad at mmmr and rmmr pentads. This conclusion was confirmed on the basis of the Fourier transform infrared results. The results provide valuable information regarding the effect of tacticity and related local conformations in the chemical reactions of PVC. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A poly(inosinic acid) analogue, poly{[1′-(β-hypoxanthine-9-yl)-5′-deoxy-D -erythro-pent-4′-enofuranose]-alt-[maleic acid]} (4), was synthesized by the alternating copolymerization of nucleoside derivative 1 with maleic anhydride and subsequent hydrolysis. N-Glycosidic bonds of the polymer were spontaneously hydrolyzed to liberate hypoxanthine from the polymer backbone in a buffer solution (pH 7.4) at room temperature. The depurination rate constant of the polymer at pH 7.4 and 37°C was measured to be 1.9 × 10−6 sec−1, which was 105-fold higher than that (3 × 10−11 sec−1) of the depurination of DNA that occurred in the biological systems. The increase in the depurination rate was attributable to the high potential energy of the polymer caused by the crowded environment around the bases, so that the polymer was more susceptible to the hydrolysis. Since natural nucleic acids often have compact structures with the crowded environment around the bases by the intricate chain folding, the depurination may also be accelerated in a similar manner in the biological system. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The utility of pentafluorophenyl esters for the selective introduction of functional units and branch points in well-defined poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) derivatives is demonstrated using a combination of controlled radical polymerization and postpolymerization modification. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer enables the synthesis of well-defined copolymers—poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate-co-tert-butyl acrylate)—with the active ester repeat units serving as attachment points for reaction with primary amines, specifically tris(2-(t-butoxycarbonyl)ethyl)methyl amine (Behera's amine). Deprotection using trifluoroacetic acid removes both the backbone and side chain t-butyl esters to give a series of branched PAA derivatives containing novel tricarboxylic acid side chains that are well suited to complexation and multidentate interactions. Surprisingly, the active ester homopolymer is shown to have the highest reactivity with Behera's amine when compared to copolymers with lower incorporation of pentafluorophenyl esters, suggesting an intriguing interplay of neighboring group effects and steric interactions. The ability to tune the efficiency of postpolymerization modification gives a library of PAA derivatives.  相似文献

The ultraviolet and fluorescence emission spectra of isotactic and syndiotactic poly(styrenesulfonic acids) have been recorded at various temperatures, dilutions, and ionic strengths. Hypochromism in the ultraviolet bands of isotactic PSSA is interpreted in terms of conformational transitions causing an alignment of aromatic residues. A conformational energy map for isotactic PSSA indicates that transitions to the (?15°, 15°) conformation are possible.  相似文献
