Hybrid numerical large eddy simulation (NLES), detached eddy simulation (DES) and URANS methods are assessed on a cavity and a labyrinth seal geometry. A high sixth‐order discretization scheme is used and is validated using the test case of a two‐dimensional vortex. The hybrid approach adopts a new blending function. For the URANS simulations, the flow within the cavity remains steady, and the results show significant variation between models. Surprisingly, low levels of resolved turbulence are observed in the cavity for the DES simulation, and the cavity shear layer remains two dimensional. The hybrid RANS–NLES approach does not suffer from this trait. For the labyrinth seal, both the URANS and DES approaches give low levels of resolved turbulence. The zonal Hamilton–Jacobi approach on the other had given significantly more resolved content. Both DES and hybrid RANS–NLES give good agreement with the experimentally measured velocity profiles. The main bottleneck in using Large Eddy Simulations at high Reynolds number is the requirement of very fine meshes near walls. One of the main reasons why hybrid LES-RANS was invented was to eliminate this limitation. In this method unsteady RANS (URANS) is used near walls and LES is used away from walls. The present paper evaluates a method for improving standard LES-RANS. The improvement consists of adding instantaneous turbulent fluctuations (forcing conditions) at the matching plane between the LES and URANS regions in order to trigger the equations to resolve turbulence. The turbulent fluctuations are taken from synthesized homogeneous turbulence assuming a modified von Kármán spectrum. Both isotropic and non-isotropic fluctuations are evaluated. The new approach is applied to fully developed channel flow and it is shown that the imposed fluctuations considerably improve the predictions. It is found that increasing the prescribed turbulent length scale of the synthesized turbulence provides excellent agreement with the classical log-law.  相似文献

Two-dimensional numerical simulations of the Richtmyer–Meshkov unstable “shock-jet” problem are conducted using both large-eddy simulation (LES) and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approaches in an arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian hydrodynamics code. Turbulence statistics are extracted from LES by running an ensemble of simulations with multimode perturbations to the initial conditions. Detailed grid convergence studies are conducted, and LES results are found to agree well with both experiment and high-order simulations conducted by Shankar et al. (Phys Fluids 23, 024102, 2011). URANS results using a kL approach are found to be highly sensitive to initialization of the turbulence lengthscale L and to the time at which L becomes resolved on the computational mesh. It is observed that a gradient diffusion closure for turbulent species flux is a poor approximation at early times, and a new closure based on the mass-flux velocity is proposed for low-Reynolds-number mixing.  相似文献

Characterization of parallel flow through rod bundles is of key importance in assessing the performance and safety of several engineering systems, including a majority of nuclear reactor concepts. Inhomogeneities in the bundle cross-section can present complex flow phenomena, including varying local conditions of turbulence. With the ever-increasing capabilities of high-performance computing, Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of turbulent flows is becoming more feasible. Through resolving all scales of turbulence, DNS can serve as a “numerical experiment,” and can provide substantial insight into flow physics, but at considerable computational cost. Thus to date, the DNS in open literature for rod bundle flows is relatively scarce, and largely limited to unit-cell domains. Since wall effects are important in rod bundle flows, a multiple-pin DNS study can expand understanding of rod bundle flows while providing valuable reference data for evaluating reduced-resolution techniques. In this work, DNS of a 5x5 square bare rod bundle representative of typical light water reactor fuel dimensions was performed using the spectral element code Nek5000. Turbulent microscales based on an advanced Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes model were used to establish the required DNS resolution. Velocity and Reynolds stress fields are analyzed in detail, and invariant analysis is used for further investigation into flow physics. The results show stark changes in the structure of turbulence in the edge gaps, suggesting the presence of gap vortices in these regions. In addition, turbulent kinetic energy budgets are presented to more fully illustrate the various turbulent processes. These data can prove useful for rigorous evaluation of lower-fidelity turbulence modeling approaches.  相似文献

Simulation and Modelling of Turbulent Trailing-Edge Flow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Computations of turbulent trailing-edge flow have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 1000 (based on the free-stream quantities and the trailing-edge thickness) using an unsteady 3D Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) code, in which two-equation (k–ε) turbulence models with various low-Re near wall treatments were implemented. Results from a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the same flow are available for comparison and assessment of the turbulence models used in the URANS code. Two-dimensional URANS calculations are carried out with turbulence mean properties from the DNS used at the inlet; the inflow boundary-layer thickness is 6.42 times the trailing-edge thickness, close to typical turbine blade flow applications. Many of the key flow features observed in DNS are also predicted by the modelling; the flow oscillates in a similar way to that found in bluff-body flow with a von Kármán vortex street produced downstream. The recirculation bubble predicted by unsteady RANS has a similar shape to DNS, but with a length only half that of the DNS. It is found that the unsteadiness plays an important role in the near wake, comparable to the modelled turbulence, but that far downstream the modelled turbulence dominates. A spectral analysis applied to the force coefficient in the wall normal direction shows that a Strouhal number based on the trailing-edge thickness is 0.23, approximately twice that observed in DNS. To assess the modelling approximations, an a priori analysis has been applied using DNS data for the key individual terms in the turbulence model equations. Turbulent flows over lifting surfaces exhibiting trailing-edge vortex shedding often cause adverse and complex phenomena, such as self-induced vibration and noise. In this paper, a numerical study on flow past a blunt-edged two-dimensional NACA 0015 section and the same section with various base cavity shapes and sizes at high Reynolds numbers has been performed using the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach with the realisable κε turbulence model. The equations are solved using the control volume method of second-order accuracy in both spatial and time domains. The assessment of the application of URANS for periodic trailing-edge flow has shown that reasonable agreement is achieved for both the time-averaged and fluctuating parameters of interest, although some differences exist in the prediction of the near-wake streamwise velocity fluctuation magnitudes. The predicted Strouhal numbers of flows past the squared-off blunt configuration with varying degrees of bluntness agree well with published experimental measurements. It is found that the intensity of the vortex strengths at the trailing-edge is amplified when the degree of bluntness is increased, leading to an increase in the mean square pressure fluctuations. The numerical prediction shows that the presence of the base cavity at the trailing-edge does not change the inherent Strouhal number of the 2D section examined. However, it does have an apparent effect on the wake structure, local pressure fluctuations and the lift force fluctuations. It is observed that the size of the cavity has more influence on the periodic trailing-edge flow than its shape does.  相似文献

A modified STRUCT (MST) turbulence model for efficient engineering computations of turbulent flows in hydro-energy machinery is proposed in this paper. The MST model switches between URANS and LES-like modes using a new damping function to adjust the turbulent viscosity. Compared with the original STRUCT method, the modifications are as follows: (1) the BSL k-ω model with the Spalart-Shur correction is chosen as the new baseline to improve the sensitivity to rotation and curvature; (2) a new adaptive time-scale ratio is proposed to avoid the arbitrariness of geometric averaging operation in the original method; (3) the normalized helicity is introduced into the new damping function to detect the energy backscatter phenomenon. Five classical high Reynolds number flow cases are tested. The results show that the turbulent viscosity of the MST model is reasonably reduced in the massively separated regions and LES-like mode is activated, which captures more turbulent vortices and fluctuations on the URANS grids. With high efficiency and robustness, the MST model inherits the advantages of the original STRUCT method and improves the prediction accuracy of the turbulence with rotation and curvature, which enables efficient engineering computations of turbulent flows in hydro-energy machinery.  相似文献

In this paper, Unsteady RANS (URANS) simulations and Large Eddy Simulations (LES) in the draft tube of a bulb turbine are presented with the objective to understand and locate the head losses in this turbine component. Three operating points of the turbine are considered. Numerical results are compared with experimental velocity measurements for validation. Thanks to a detailed analysis of the energy balance in the draft tube, the physical and hydrodynamic phenomena responsible for head losses in the draft tube are identified. Head losses are due to transfer of mean kinetic energy to the turbulent flow and viscous dissipation of kinetic energy. This occurs mainly in the central vortex structure and next to the walls in the draft tube. Head losses prediction is found to be dependent on the turbulence model used in the simulations, especially in URANS simulations. Using this analysis, the evolution of head losses between the three operating points is understood.  相似文献

Computational Fluid Dynamics using RANS-based modelling approaches have become an important tool in the internal combustion engine development and optimization process. However, these models cannot resolve cycle to cycle variations, which are an important aspect in the design of new combustion systems. In this study the feasibility of using a Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) SST model, which is a hybrid RANS/LES model, to predict cycle to cycle variations is investigated. In the near wall region or in regions where the grid resolution is not sufficiently fine to resolve smaller structures, the two-equation RANS SST model is used. In the other regions with higher grid resolution an LES model is applied. The case considered is a geometrically simplified engine, for which detailed experimental data for the ensemble averaged and single cycle velocity field are available from Boreé et al. [Boreé, J., Maurel, S., Bazile, R., 2002. Disruption of a compressed vortex, Physics of Fluids 14 (7), 2543–2556]. The fluid flow shows a strong tumbling motion, which is a major characteristic for modern turbo-charged, direct-injection gasoline engines. The general flow structure is analyzed first and the extent of the LES region and the amount of resolved fluctuations are discussed. Multiple consecutive cycles are computed and turbulent statistics of DES SST, URANS and the measured velocity field are compared for different piston positions. Cycle to cycle variations of the velocity field are analyzed for both computation and experiment with a special emphasis on the useability of the DES SST model to predict cyclic variations.  相似文献

To simulate turbulent flow over a rough wall without resolving complicated rough geometries, a macroscopic rough wall model is developed based on spatial (plane) averaging theory. The plane-averaged drag force term, which arises through averaging the Navier–Stokes equations in a plane parallel to a rough wall, can be modeled using a plane porosity and a plane hydraulic diameter. To evaluate the developed model, direct and macroscopic model simulations for turbulence over irregularly distributed semi-spheres at Reynolds number of 300 are carried out using the D3Q27 multiple-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann method. The results show that the developed model can be used to predict rough wall skin friction. The results agree quantitatively with standard turbulence statistics such as mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles with the fully resolved DNS data. Since velocity dispersion occurs inside the rough wall and is found to contribute to turbulence energy dissipation, which the developed model cannot account for, the developed model fails to reproduce dispersion-related turbulence energy dissipation. However, it is found that the plane-averaged drag force term can successfully recover the deficiency of dispersion-related turbulence energy dissipation.  相似文献

Turbulent opposed jet (TOJ) burners are an interesting test case for fundamental combustion research and a good benchmark for the available modelling approaches. However, these opposed jet flames strongly depend on the turbulence generation inside the nozzle, which is usually achieved through a perforated plate upstream of the nozzle exit. The present work investigates the flow from these perforated plates and the subsequent turbulence generation in great detail. We present results from highly-resolved large eddy simulations (LES) of the in-nozzle flow in turbulent opposed jets alongside state-of-the-art particle image velocimetry (PIV) at standard and high repetition rates taken inside a glass nozzle. The in-nozzle PIV data provides the LES inflow conditions with unprecedented detail, which are used to follow the initial jet development behaviour known from PIV, before jet coalescence, turbulence production and decay further downstream in the nozzles are successfully predicted. In regions where the PIV experiment suffers from inherent limitations like reflections and the velocity bias, the LES data is available to still obtain a detailed picture of the flow. The sensitivity of the simulations to various physical and numerical parameters is discussed in detail. Results from LES and PIV are compared qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of first and second moments of velocity, temporal autocorrelations, and energy density spectra. Significant deviations are found in the frequency (20%) and strength of vortex shedding from the inlet plane only, whereas the qualitative and quantitative agreement between simulation and experiment is otherwise excellent throughout, implying that a successful large eddy simulation of a turbulent opposed jet can be performed in a domain that includes the perforated plates.  相似文献

A subgrid scale flame surface density combustion model for the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of premixed combustion is derived and validated. The model is based on fractal characteristics of the flame surface, assuming a self similar wrinkling of the flame between smallest and largest wrinkling length scales. Experimental and direct numerical simulation databases as well as theoretical models are used to derive a model for the fractal parameters, namely the cut-off lengths and the fractal dimension suitable in the LES context. The combustion model is designed with the intent to simulate low as well as high Reynolds number premixed turbulent flame propagation and with a focus on correct scaling with pressure. The combustion model is validated by simulations of turbulent Bunsen flames with methane and propane fuel at pressure levels between 0.1 MPa and 2 MPa and at turbulence levels of $0 < u^{\prime }/s_{L}^{0} < 11$ , conditions typical for spark ignition engines. The predicted turbulent flame speed is in a very good agreement with the experimental data and a smooth transition from resolved flame wrinkling to fully modelled, nearly subgrid-only wrinkling is realized. Evaluating the influence of mesh resolution shows a predicted mean flame surface and turbulent flame speed independent of mesh resolution for cases with 9–86 % resolved flame surface. Additional simulations of a highly turbulent jet flame at 0.1 MPa and 0.5 MPa and the comparison with experimental data in terms of flame shape, velocity field and turbulent fluctuations validates the model also at conditions typical for gas turbines.  相似文献

In the current study, the unsteady flow in a centrifugal fan is carried out using Computational Fluid Dynamics calculation based on the Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) approach to model the turbulence phenomenon. The SAS concept is based on the introduction of the von Karman length scale into the turbulence scale equation. The information provided by the von Karman length scale allows SAS models to dynamically adjust to resolved structures in an Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) simulation, which results in a Large Eddy Simulation-like behaviour in unsteady regions of the flow field. At the same time, the model provides standard RANS capabilities in stable flow regions. The introduction of the von Karman length scale is based on the reformulation of Rottas's equation for the integral length scale. To validate the numerical results, the overall performances of the fan and the wall pressure fluctuations computed upon the volute casing surface are compared with the unsteady measured data.  相似文献

Large eddy simulation (LES) results are reported for temporally developing solid–solid and solid–rigid-lid juncture flows. A MacCormack-type scheme that is second-order in time, and fourth-order in space for the convective terms and second-order in space for the viscous terms, is used. The simulations are obtained for a low subsonic Mach number. The subgrid-scale stresses (SGS) are modeled using the dynamic modeling procedure. The turbulent flow field generated on a flat-plate boundary layer is used to initialize the juncture flow simulations. The results of the flat-plate boundary layer simulations are validated with experimental and direct numerical simulations (DNS) data. In juncture flow simulations, the presence of an adjacent solid-wall/rigid-lid boundary altered the mean and the turbulent field, setting up gradients in the anisotropy of normal Reynolds stresses resulting in the formation of turbulence-induced secondary vortices. The relative size of these secondary vortices and the distribution of mean and turbulent quantities are in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations for the solid–solid juncture. The overall distribution of the mean and turbulence quantities showed close resemblance between the solid–solid and the solid–rigid-lid junctures; except for the absence of a second vortical region near the rigid-lid boundary. In agreement with the experimental observations, it was found that the normalized anisotropy term exhibited similarity when plotted against the distance from the boundary, regardless of the type of boundary, i.e. solid-wall or rigid-lid. The turbulent kinetic energy increased near the rigid-lid boundary. While the surface normal velocity fluctuations decreased to zero at the rigid-lid boundary, the other two velocity components showed an increase in their energy, which is also consistent with the experimental observations. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A theoretical method based on mathematical physics formalism that allows transposition of turbulence modeling methods from URANS (unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes) models, to multiple-scale models and large eddy simulations (LES) is presented. The method is based on the spectral Fourier transform of the dynamic equation of the two-point fluctuating velocity correlations with an extension to the case of non-homogenous turbulence. The resulting equation describes the evolution of the spectral velocity correlation tensor in wave vector space. Then, we show that the full wave number integration of the spectral equation allows one to recover usual one-point statistical closure whereas the partial integration based on spectrum splitting gives rise to partial integrated transport models (PITM). This latter approach, depending on the type of spectral partitioning used, can yield either a statistical multiple-scale model or subfilter transport models used in LES or hybrid methods, providing some appropriate approximations are made. Closure hypotheses underlying these models are then discussed by reference to physical considerations with emphasis on identification of tensorial fluxes that represent turbulent energy transfer or dissipation. Some experiments such as the homogeneous axisymmetric contraction, the decay of isotropic turbulence, the pulsed turbulent channel flow and a wall injection induced flow are then considered as typical possible applications for illustrating the potentials of these models.   相似文献

SUMMARY

This paper describes a computational procedure for the optimization of the performance parameters of a simulated annular combustor. This method has been applied to analyze the influence of the performance parameters and geometries on the annular combustor characteristics and provide a good understanding of combustor internal flow fields, and therefore it can be used for guiding the combustor design process. The approach is based on the solution of governing nonlinear, elliptic partial differential equations for 3-D axisymmetric recirculating turbulent reacting swirling flows and the modelling of turbulence, combustion, thermal radiation and pollutant formation. The turbulence effects are introduced via the modified two-equation κ-ε model. Turbulent combustion is modelled using the κ-ε-g model and a two-step turbulent combustion model is employed for the excess emission of carbon monoxide CO. For the evaluation of the NO pollutant formation rate, the NO pollutant formation model, which takes into account the influence of turbulence, presented here. The radiative heat transfer is handled by the heat flux model. The predictions of the combustor character-istics and performance parameters are made using the present approach.

Predictions of velocity, length of the recirculation zone, combustion efficiency and wall temperature are compared with measurements. Agreement between the predictions and experimental data is very satisfactory.  相似文献

采用五阶有限差分WENO格式直接模拟了高初始湍流Mach数的可压缩均匀各向同性湍流,主要分析了湍流的统计特性 和压缩性的影响,包括能谱特征、激波串、耗散率、标度律等. 研究表明,湍动能主要来自于速度场螺旋分量的贡献;各向同性湍流的小尺度脉动对压缩性更为敏感,并且压缩性的增强加快了湍流大 尺度脉动向小尺度脉动的湍动能输运;随着湍流Mach数的升高,胀量(压缩)耗散率所占比率也显著增长. 标度律分析表明,强可压缩湍流的横向速度结构函数仍然具有扩展自相似性;当阶数较高(p ≥ 5)时,纵向速度结构函数的扩展自相似性则不再成立. 对于压缩性较弱的湍流,与不可压缩湍流一致,横向湍流脉动的间歇性要强于纵向湍流脉动;而对于强可压缩湍流,纵向湍流脉动的 间歇性要强于横向湍流脉动.  相似文献
