Time-resolved PIV measurements were performed in a dilute particle-laden flow tracking near-neutrally buoyant polystyrene beads and the velocity field of a near wall turbulent boundary layer. Data were taken in a vertical light sheet aligned in the streamwise direction at the center of a horizontal, closed loop, transparent square water channel facility. In addition, low speed measurements were performed characterizing the effects of the dispersed phase on mean and turbulence flow quantities. Reynolds shear stress slightly differed from clear water conditions whereas fluid mean and rms values were not affected. A case study for several beads revealed a clear relation between their movement and near-wall coherent structures. Several structures having 2D vorticity signatures of near-wall hairpin vortices and hairpin packets, directly affected bead movement. A statistical analysis showed that the mean streamwise velocity of ascending beads lagged behind the mean fluid velocity and bead rms values were higher than fluid ones. Particle Reynolds numbers based on the magnitude of the instantaneous relative velocity vector peaked near the wall; values not exceeding 100, too low for vortex shedding to occur. Quadrant analysis showed a clear preference for ascending beads to reside in ejections while for descending beads the preference for sweeps was less.  相似文献

The structure of turbulence in a drag-reduced flat-plate boundary layer flow has been studied with particle image velocimetry (PIV). Drag reduction was achieved by injection of a concentrated polymer solution through a spanwise slot along the test wall at a location upstream of the PIV measurement station. Planes of velocity were measured parallel to the wall (xz plane), for a total of 30 planes across the thickness of the boundary layer. For increasing drag reduction, we found a significant modification of the near-wall structure of turbulence with a coarsening of the low-speed velocity streaks and a reduction in the number and strength of near-wall vortical structures.  相似文献

Laser-induced fluorescent dye visualization and image correlation velocimetry were employed to delineate near-wall turbulent structures in a pipe flow. The sweeping and ejection events near the wall and the downstream evolution of a large-scale eddy structure rotating in a counter-clockwise direction were clearly reflected in the instantaneous fluctuating velocity fields. This eddy structure was found to form mostly in the logarithmic region and to dominate the flow structures there, while the ejection and sweeping events in the log layer were greatly influenced by the existence of the large-scale eddy structure. Turbulent drag reducing flow with blowing polymer solution from the channel wall was investigated experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Experiments were carried out with varying conditions of blowing polymer solution (e.g. weight concentration of polymer solution). Reynolds number based on the channel height and mean velocity was set to 20000 and 40000. When the polymer solution was blown from the channel wall, streamwise velocity fluctuation little increased, but wall-normal velocity fluctuation, Reynolds shear stress and correlation coefficient decreased significantly only near the blower wall. This behavior corresponds to the decrease of the ejection and sweep in the near-wall region observed by the investigation of instantaneous velocity map. On the contrary, this characteristic behavior was not observed at a position away from the blower wall (y/(H/2) > 0.4) and the scatter plot was almost the same as that of the water flow in this region. These results suggest that there are two regions in the drag reducing flow with blowing polymer solution from the wall; one is a non-Newtonian region which exists near the blower wall, and the other is a Newtonian region at a distance from the wall. The non-Newtonian region plays a key role in the drag reduction by the blowing polymer solution.  相似文献

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements and planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) visualizations have been made in a turbulent boundary layer over a rough wall. The wall roughness consisted of square bars placed transversely to the flow at a pitch to height ratio of λ/k = 11 for the PLIF experiments and λ/k = 8 and 16 for the PIV measurements. The ratio between the boundary layer thickness and the roughness height k/δ was about 20 for the PLIF and 38 for the PIV. Both the PLIF and PIV data showed that the near-wall region of the flow was populated by unstable quasi-coherent structures which could be associated to shear layers originating at the trailing edge of the roughness elements. The streamwise mean velocity profile presented a downward shift which varied marginally between the two cases of λ/k, in agreement with previous measurements and DNS results. The data indicated that the Reynolds stresses normalized by the wall units are higher for the case λ/k = 16 than those for λ/k = 8 in the outer region of the flow, suggesting that the roughness density effects could be felt well beyond the near-wall region of the flow. As expected the roughness disturbed dramatically the sublayer which in turn altered the turbulence production mechanism. The turbulence production is maximum at a distance of about 0.5k above the roughness elements. When normalized by the wall units, the turbulence production is found to be smaller than that of a smooth wall. It is argued that the production of turbulence is correlated with the form drag.

Vortex generator jets were used to generate large-scale longitudinal vortices embedded in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The investigation was performed in a water tunnel, measuring instantaneous flow fields in planes parallel and normal to the flat plate, using particle image velocimetry. The objective of the research was to observe the response of near-wall turbulence to the imposed perturbing flow. It was shown that a small-amplitude forcing vortical flow had significant influence on the mean and fluctuating velocity profiles. Moreover, particle image velocimetry permitted speculation upon the behaviour of the wall velocity streaks under the action of the perturbing forcing vortical flow.  相似文献

An experimental measurement was performed using time-resolved particle image velocimetry (TRPIV) to investigate the spatial topological character of coherent structures in wall-bounded turbulence of polymer additive solution. The fully developed near-wall turbulent flow fields with and without polymer additives at the same Reynolds number were measured by TRPIV in a water channel. The comparisons of turbulent statistics confirm that due to viscoelastic structure of long-chain polymers, the wall-normal velocity fluctuation and Reynolds shear stress in the near-wall region are suppressed significantly. Furthermore, it is noted that such a behavior of polymers is closely related to the decease of the motion of the second and forth quadrants, i.e., the ejection and sweep events, in the near-wall region. The spatial topological mode of coherent structures during bursts has been extracted by the new mu-level criteria based on locally averaged velocity structure function. Although the general shapes of coherent structures are unchanged by polymer additives, the fluctuating velocity, velocity gradient, velocity strain rate and vorticity of coherent structures during burst events are suppressed in the polymer additive solution compared with that in water. The results show that due to the polymer additives the occurrence and intensity of coherent structures are suppressed, leading to drag reduction.  相似文献

Two non-intrusive techniques, namely laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) and the electrochemical method, have been used for simultaneous measurements of the instantaneous streamwise velocity (U) and longitudinal wall shear stress (S), evaluated in a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. The space-time correlation between the fluctuating velocity and shear stress suggests that the coherent flow structures are propagated (i) under a slight angle of 5° in the near-wall region and (ii) at an average angle of 15.5° for y+>30. It is shown that the time shift obtained from the correlation between the LDA and the electrochemical signals is due to the dynamic behaviour of the electrodiffusion probe, but also to the leaning character of the coherent structures.  相似文献

In the present study, we employed stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) to investigate the characteristics of turbulence structures in a drag-reduced turbulent channel flow with addition of surfactant. The tested drag-reducing fluid was a CTAC/NaSal/Water (CTAC: cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride; NaSal: sodium salicylate) system at 25°C. The weight concentration of CTAC was 30 ppm. Stereoscopic PIV measurement was performed for a water flow (Re=1.1×104) and a CTAC solution flow (Re=1.5×104 with 54% drag reduction) in both the streamwise–spanwise and wall-normal-spanwise planes, respectively. The three-dimensionality of hairpin vortex structures in the near-wall region for wall-bounded turbulent flow was reproduced by conditionally averaging the stereoscopic two-dimensional-three-component velocity fields. A series of wall-normal vortex cores were found to align with the near-wall low-speed streaks with opposite vorticity signals at both sides of the streaks and with the vorticity decreased on average by about one order of magnitude in CTAC solution flow compared with water flow; the spanwise spacing between the near-wall low-speed streaks in the solution flow is increased by about 46%. The streamwise vorticity of the vortex cores appearing in the wall-normal-spanwise plane was also decreased by the use of drag-reducing surfactant additives.  相似文献

PIV measurements near a wall are generally difficult due to low seeding density, low velocity, high velocity gradient, and strong reflections. Such problems are often compounded by curved boundaries, which are commonly found in many industrial and medical applications. To systematically solve these problems, this paper presents two novel techniques for near-wall measurement, together named Interfacial PIV, which extracts both wall-shear gradient and near-wall tangential velocity profiles at one-pixel resolution. To deal with curved walls, image strips at a curved wall are stretched into rectangles by means of conformal transformation. To extract the maximal spatial information on the near-wall tangential velocity field, a novel 1D correlation function is performed on each horizontal pixel line of the transformed image template to form a “correlation stack”. This 1D correlation function requires that the wall-normal displacement component of the particles be smaller than the particle image diameter in order to produce a correlation signal. Within the image regions satisfying this condition, the correlation function yields peaks that form a tangential velocity profile. To determine this profile robustly, we propose to integrate gradients of tangential velocity outward from the wall, wherein the gradient at each wall-normal position is measured by fitting a straight line to the correlation peaks. The capability of Interfacial PIV was validated against Particle Image Distortion using synthetic image pairs generated from a DNS velocity field over a sinusoidal bed. Different velocity measurement schemes performed on the same correlation stacks were also demonstrated. The results suggest that Interfacial PIV using line fitting and gradient integration provides the best accuracy of all cases in the measurements of velocity gradient and velocity profile near wall surfaces.  相似文献

Heat transfer properties vary locally and temporally in internal combustion engines due to variations in the boundary layer flow. In order to characterize the dynamics in the boundary layer, crank-angle resolved high-speed micro particle image velocimetry (μPIV) and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) have been used for near-wall velocity measurements in a spark-ignition direct-injection single cylinder engine. A 527-nm dual cavity green Nd:YLF laser was used for velocity measurements near the cylinder head wall between the intake and exhaust valves in the tumble mean flow plane parallel to the cylinder axis. A long-distance microscope was used to obtain a spatial resolution of 45 μm. Flow fields were determined from 180 to 490 CAD in the compression and expansion strokes. The data show significant variation in the flow during the compression and expansion strokes and from cycle to cycle. Flow deceleration was observed during the end of the compression that continued during the expansion stroke until 400 CAD when the flow direction reverses. Sub-millimeter-sized vortical structures were observed within the boundary layer over extended periods of time.  相似文献

Oscillating jet actuators have been implemented and tested on a circular cylinder. Their action on the separation of turbulent boundary layers is investigated using complementary approaches. Wall pressure distribution shows that a large lift is generated, at the expense, however, of a slightly increased drag. Particle image velocimetry measurements provide the mean and fluctuating velocity fields in the near-wake. The control jet deflects the mean flux lines towards the wall, illustrating that the separation is delayed. This effect appears more and more powerful as the pulsed jet velocity increases. Phase averaging of the PIV fields shows that periodic structures are generated by the control, and how these structures modify the aerodynamic forces by entraining the external flow towards the wall. Finally, a few comparisons are made with laminar boundary layers and some general mechanisms are presented for the lift increase.  相似文献

Measurements in an urban-type boundary layer   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Wind tunnel measurements of the boundary layer flow over a very rough surface comprising a staggered array of cubes are presented and discussed. Attention is concentrated on the near-wall region, including the canopy region below the tops of the roughness elements. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and laser Doppler anemometry were used to identify the dominant features of the mean and turbulent flow and these are compared with the better-known features of the flow above the roughness. Spatial correlation data, extracted from the PIV images, are used to provide information about eddy structures and it is shown that these differ in some crucial respects from those typical of more classical boundary layers. The implications of the results are discussed in terms of their relevance to flows within the urban environment.  相似文献

The effect of micro-bubbles on the turbulent boundary layer in the channel flow with Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from \(0.87\times 10 ^{5}\) to \(1.23\times 10^{5}\) is experimentally studied by using particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. The micro-bubbles are produced by water electrolysis. The velocity profiles, Reynolds stress and instantaneous structures of the boundary layer, with and without micro-bubbles, are measured and analyzed. The presence of micro-bubbles changes the streamwise mean velocity of the fluid and increases the wall shear stress. The results show that micro-bubbles have two effects, buoyancy and extrusion, which dominate the flow behavior of the mixed fluid in the turbulent boundary layer. The buoyancy effect leads to upward motion that drives the fluid motion in the same direction and, therefore, enhances the turbulence intense of the boundary layer. While for the extrusion effect, the presence of accumulated micro-bubbles pushes the flow structures in the turbulent boundary layer away from the near-wall region. The interaction between these two effects causes the vorticity structures and turbulence activity to be in the region far away from the wall. The buoyancy effect is dominant when the Re is relatively small, while the extrusion effect plays a more important role when Re rises.  相似文献

It is highly attractive to develop an efficient and flexible large eddy simulation(LES)technique for high-Reynolds-number atmospheric boundary layer(ABL)simulation using the low-order numerical scheme on a relatively coarse grid, that could reproduce the logarithmic profile of the mean velocity and some key features of large-scale coherent structures in the outer layer. In this study,an improved near-wall correction scheme for the vertical gradient of the resolved streamwise velocity in the strain-rate tensor is proposed to calculate the eddy viscosity coefficient in the subgrid-scale(SGS)model.The LES code is realized with a second-order finite-difference scheme, the scale-dependent dynamic SGS stress model, the equilibrium wall stress model, and the proposed correction scheme.Very-high-Reynolds-number ABL flow simulation under the neutral stratification condition is conducted to assess the performance of the method in predicting the mean and fluctuating characteristics of the rough-wall turbulence. It is found that the logarithmic profile of the mean streamwise velocity and some key features of large-scale coherent structures can be reasonably predicted by adopting the proposed correction method and the low-order numerical scheme.  相似文献

In this note, basic turbulent statistics in a pipe flow are computed accurately by large-eddy simulation using a mesh resolution coarser than the viscous sublayer. These results are obtained when a regular Cartesian mesh is used for the spatial discretization of the circular pipe thanks to an immersed boundary method combined with high-order schemes. In this particular computational configuration, the near-wall features of mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles are found to be correctly captured at a scale significantly smaller than the mesh size. Comparisons between channel and pipe flow configurations suggest that an irregular mesh distribution in terms of wall distance may be a favourable condition to explicitly compute by large-eddy simulation reliable wall turbulence without any extra-modelling in the near-wall region.  相似文献

It is known that stretching and intensification of a hairpin vortex by mean shear play an important role to create a hairpin vortex packet, which generates the large Reynolds shear stress associated with skin-friction drag in wall-bounded turbulent flows. In order to suppress the mean shear at the wall for high efficient drag reduction (DR), in the present study, we explore an active flow control concept using streamwise shear control (SSC) at the wall. The longitudinal control surface is periodically spanwise-arranged with no-control surface while varying the structural spacing, and an amplitude parameter for imposing the strength of the actuating streamwise velocity at the wall is introduced to further enhance the skin-friction DR. Significant DR is observed with an increase in the two parameters with an accompanying reduction of the Reynolds stresses and vorticity fluctuations, although a further increase in the parameters amplifies the turbulence activity in the near-wall region. In order to study the direct relationship between turbulent vortical structures and DR under the SSC, temporal evolution with initial eddies extracted by conditional averages for Reynolds-stress-maximizing Q2 events are examined. It is shown that the generation of new vortices is dramatically inhibited with an increase in the parameters throughout the flow, causing fewer vortices to be generated under the control. However, when the structural spacing is sufficiently large, the generation of new vortex is not suppressed over the no-control surface in the near-wall region, resulting in an increase of the second- and fourth-quadrant Reynolds shear stresses. Although strong actuating velocity intensifies the near-wall turbulence, the increase in the turbulence activity is attributed to the generation of counter-clockwise near-wall vortices by the increased vortex transport.  相似文献

In this paper, a direct numerical simulation of particle-laden flow in a flat plate boundary layer is performed, using the Eulerian–Lagrangian point-particle approach. This is, as far as we know, the first simulation of a particle-laden spatially-developing turbulent boundary layer with two-way coupling. A local minimum of the particle number density is observed in the close vicinity of the wall. The present simulation results indicate that the inertial particles displace the quasi-streamwise vortices towards the wall, which, in turn, enhance the mean streamwise fluid velocity. As a result, the skin-friction coefficient is increased whereas the boundary layer integral thicknesses are reduced. The presence of particles augments the streamwise fluctuating velocity in the near-wall region but attenuates it in the outer layer. Nevertheless, the wall-normal and spanwise velocity fluctuations are significantly damped, and so is the Reynolds stress. In addition, the combined effect of a reduced energy production and an increased viscous dissipation leads to the attenuation of the turbulent kinetic energy.  相似文献
