Fine-tuning single-atom catalysts (SACs) to surpass their activity limit remains challenging at their atomic scale. Herein, we exploit p-type semiconducting character of SACs having a metal center coordinated to nitrogen donors (MeNx) and rectify their local charge density by an n-type semiconductor support. With iron phthalocyanine (FePc) as a model SAC, introducing an n-type gallium monosulfide that features a low work function generates a space-charged region across the junction interface, and causes distortion of the FeN4 moiety and spin-state transition in the FeII center. This catalyst shows an over two-fold higher specific oxygen-reduction activity than that of pristine FePc. We further employ three other n-type metal chalcogenides of varying work function as supports, and discover a linear correlation between the activities of the supported FeN4 and the rectification degrees, which clearly indicates that SACs can be continuously tuned by this rectification strategy.  相似文献

Breaking atomic monogeneity of catalyst surfaces is promising for constructing synergistic active centers to cope with complex multi-step catalytic reactions. Here, we report a defect-derived strategy for creating surface phosphorous vacancies (P-vacancies) on nanometric Rh2P electrocatalysts toward drastically boosted electrocatalysis for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). This strategy disrupts the monogeneity and atomic regularity of the thermodynamically stable P-terminated surfaces. Density functional theory calculations initially verify that the competitive adsorption behavior of Had and OHad on perfect P-terminated Rh2P{200} facets (p-Rh2P) can be bypassed on defective Rh2P{200} surfaces (d-Rh2P). The P-vacancies enable the exposure of sub-surface Rh atoms to act as exclusive H adsorption sites. Therein, the Had cooperates with the OHad on the peripheral P-sites to effectively accelerate the alkaline HOR. Defective Rh2P nanowires (d-Rh2P NWs) and perfect Rh2P nanocubes (p-Rh2P NCs) are then elaborately synthesized to experimentally represent the d-Rh2P and p-Rh2P catalytic surfaces. As expected, the P-vacancy-enriched d-Rh2P NWs catalyst exhibits extremely high catalytic activity and outstanding CO tolerance for alkaline HOR electrocatalysis, attaining 5.7 and 14.3 times mass activity that of p-Rh2P NCs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. This work sheds light on breaking the surface atomic monogeneity for the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Pt/WOx(2Pd>Au.

Oxide-derived Cu (OD−Cu) featured with surface located sub-20 nm nanoparticles (NPs) created via surface structure reconstruction was developed for electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECO2RR). With surface adsorbed hydroxyls (OHad) identified during ECO2RR, it is realized that OHad, sterically confined and adsorbed at OD−Cu by surface located sub-20 nm NPs, should be determinative to the multi-carbon (C2) product selectivity. In situ spectral investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that OHad favors the adsorption of low-frequency *CO with weak C≡O bonds and strengthens the *CO binding at OD−Cu surface, promoting *CO dimerization and then selective C2 production. However, excessive OHad would inhibit selective C2 production by occupying active sites and facilitating competitive H2 evolution. In a flow cell, stable C2 production with high selectivity of ∼60 % at −200 mA cm−2 could be achieved over OD−Cu, with adsorption of OHad well steered in the fast flowing electrolyte.  相似文献

Developing efficient and robust hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for scalable and sustainable hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting is strategic and challenging. Herein, heterogeneous Mo8O26-NbNxOy supported on N-doped graphene (defined as Mo8O26-NbNxOy/NG) is synthesized by controllable hydrothermal reaction and nitridation process. The O-exposed Mo8O26 clusters covalently confined on NbNxOy nanodomains provide a distinctive interface configuration and appropriate electronic structure, where fully exposed multiple active sites give excellent HER performance beyond commercial Pt/C catalyst in pH-universal electrolytes. Theoretical studies reveal that the Mo8O26-NbNxOy interface with electronic reconstruction affords near-optimal hydrogen adsorption energy and enhanced initial H2O adsorption. Furthermore, the terminal O atoms in Mo8O26 clusters cooperate with Nb atoms to promote the initial H2O adsorption, and subsequently reduce the H2O dissociation energy, accelerating the entire HER kinetics.  相似文献

Tracking the trajectory of hydrogen intermediates during hydrogen electro-catalysis is beneficial for designing synergetic multi-component catalysts with division of chemical labor. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dynamic lattice hydrogen (LH) migration mechanism that leads to two orders of magnitude increase in the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity on Pd@Pt over pure Pd, even ≈31.8 times mass activity enhancement than commercial Pt. Specifically, the polarization-driven electrochemical hydrogenation process from Pd@Pt to PdHx@Pt by incorporating LH allows more surface vacancy Pt sites to increase the surface H coverage. The inverse dehydrogenation process makes PdHx as an H reservoir, providing LH migrates to the surface of Pt and participates in the HOR. Meanwhile, the formation of PdHx induces electronic effect, lowering the energy barrier of rate-determining Volmer step, thus resulting in the HOR kinetics on Pd@Pt being proportional to the LH concentration in the in situ formed PdHx@Pt. Moreover, this dynamic catalysis mechanism would open up the catalysts scope for hydrogen electro-catalysis.  相似文献

Photocatalytic water splitting to obtain hydrogen energy can transform low-density solar to high density, new and clean energy in a clean way, which is one of the ideal ways to solve the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this paper, The CoxP/hollow porous C3N4 composite photocatalytic material was synthesized by simple methods. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of CoxP/hollow porous C3N4 reaches 1602 μmol g−1 h−1, which is 151 times of that of pure C3N4. The reasons for the high photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of CoxP/hollow porous C3N4 could be summarized as follows: (1) the hollow and porous structure of C3N4 shows higher light capture efficiency, larger specific surface area and more surface active sites. (2) metalloid CoxP loaded forms the Schottky contact with C3N4, which improves the photogenerated charges separation efficiency of C3N4, prolongs the photogenerated charges lifetime and improves the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity of C3N4. (3) The higher conductivity of metalloid CoxP and the lower overpotential of hydrogen production are other reasons for the higher activity of photocatalytic hydrogen production of CoxP/hollow porous C3N4. This work provides an important role for the design of efficient, stable, and efficient construction of photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.  相似文献

The construction of highly active, durable, and cost-effective catalysts is urgently needed for green hydrogen production. Herein, catalysts consisting of high-density Pt (24 atoms nm−2) and Ir (32 atoms nm−2) single atoms anchored on Co(OH)2 were constructed by a facile one-step approach. Remarkably, Pt1/Co(OH)2 and Ir1/Co(OH)2 only required 4 and 178 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. Moreover, the assembled Pt1/Co(OH)2//Ir1/Co(OH)2 system showed mass activity of 4.9 A mgnoble metal−1 at 2.0 V in an alkaline water electrolyzer, which is 316.1 times higher than that of Pt/C//IrO2. Mechanistic studies revealed that reconstructed Ir−O6 single atoms and remodeled Pt triple-atom sites enhanced the occupancy of Ir−O bonding orbitals and improved the occupation of Pt−H antibonding orbital, respectively, contributing to the formation of the O−O bond and the desorption of hydrogen. This one-step approach was also generalized to fabricate other 20 single-atom catalysts.  相似文献

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is viewed as a promising way to remove the greenhouse gas CO2 from the atmosphere and convert it into useful industrial products such as methane, methanol, formate, ethanol, and so forth. Single-atom site catalysts (SACs) featuring maximum theoretical atom utilization and a unique electronic structure and coordination environment have emerged as promising candidates for use in the CO2RR. The electronic properties and atomic structures of the central metal sites in SACs will be changed significantly once the types or coordination environments of the central metal sites are altered, which appears to provide new routes for engineering SACs for CO2 electrocatalysis. Therefore, it is of great importance to discuss the structural regulation of SACs at the atomic level and their influence on CO2RR activity and selectivity. Despite substantial efforts being made to fabricate various SACs, the principles of regulating the intrinsic electrocatalytic performances of the single-atom sites still needs to be sufficiently emphasized. In this perspective article, we present the latest progress relating to the synthesis and catalytic performance of SACs for the electrochemical CO2RR. We summarize the atomic-level regulation of SACs for the electrochemical CO2RR from five aspects: the regulation of the central metal atoms, the coordination environments, the interface of single metal complex sites, multi-atom active sites, and other ingenious strategies to improve the performance of SACs. We highlight synthesis strategies and structural design approaches for SACs with unique geometric structures and discuss how the structure affects the catalytic properties.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising way to remove CO2 and convert it into useful industrial products. Single-atom site catalysts provide opportunities to regulate the active sites of CO2RR catalysts at the atomic level.  相似文献

Recently Debe et al. reported that Pt3Ni7 leads to extraordinary Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) activity. However, several reports show that hardly any Ni remains in the layers of the catalysts close to the surface (“Pt-skin effect”). This paradox that Ni is essential to the high catalytic activity with the peak ORR activity at Pt3Ni7 while little or no Ni remains close to the surface is explained here using large-scale first-principles-based simulations. We make the radical assumption that processing Pt–Ni catalysts under ORR conditions would leach out all Ni accessible to the solvent. To simulate this process we use the ReaxFF reactive force field, starting with random alloy particles ranging from 50% Ni to 90% Ni and containing up to ∼300 000 atoms, deleting the Ni atoms, and equilibrating the resulting structures. We find that the Pt3Ni7 case and a final particle radius around 7.5 nm lead to internal voids in communication with the exterior, doubling the external surface footprint, in fair agreement with experiment. Then we examine the surface character of these nanoporous systems and find that a prominent feature in the surface of the de-alloyed particles is a rhombic structure involving 4 surface atoms which is crystalline-like but under-coordinated. Using density-functional theory, we calculate the energy barriers of ORR steps on Pt nanoporous catalysts, focusing on the Oad-hydration reaction (Oad + H2Oad → OHad + OHad) but including the barriers of O2 dissociation (O2ad → Oad + Oad) and water formation (OHad + Had → H2Oad). We find that the reaction barrier for the Oad-hydration rate-determining-step is reduced significantly on the de-alloyed surface sites compared to Pt(111). Moreover we find that these active sites are prevalent on the surface of particles de-alloyed from a Pt–Ni 30 : 70 initial composition. These simulations explain the peak in surface reactivity at Pt3Ni7, and provide a rational guide to use for further optimization of improved catalytic and nanoporous materials.  相似文献

Single atom catalysts (SACs) are of great importance for oxygen reduction, a critical process in renewable energy technologies. The catalytic performance of SACs largely depends on the structure of their active sites, but explorations of highly active structures for SAC active sites are still limited. Herein, we demonstrate a combined experimental and theoretical study of oxygen reduction catalysis on SACs, which incorporate M−N3C1 site structure, composed of atomically dispersed transition metals (e.g., Fe, Co, and Cu) in nitrogenated carbon nanosheets. The resulting SACs with M−N3C1 sites exhibited prominent oxygen reduction catalytic activities in both acidic and alkaline media, following the trend Fe−N3C1 > Co−N3C1 > Cu−N3C1. Theoretical calculations suggest the C atoms in these structures behave as collaborative adsorption sites to M atoms, thanks to interactions between the d/p orbitals of the M/C atoms in the M−N3C1 sites, enabling dual site oxygen reduction.  相似文献

Metal single atoms (SAs) anchored in carbon support via coordinating with N atoms are efficient active sites to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, rational design of single atom catalysts with highly exposed active sites is challenging and urgently desirable. Herein, an anion exchange strategy is presented to fabricate Fe-N4 moieties anchored in hierarchical carbon nanoplates composed of hollow carbon spheres (Fe-SA/N-HCS). With the coordinating O atoms are substituted by N atoms, Fe SAs with Fe-O4 configuration are transformed into the ones with Fe-N4 configuration during the thermal activation process. Insights into the evolution of central atoms demonstrate that the SAs with specific coordination environment can be obtained by modulating in situ anion exchange process. The strategy produces a large quantity of electrochemical accessible site and high utilization rate of Fe-N4. Fe-SA/N-HCS shows excellent ORR electrocatalytic performance with half-wave potential of 0.91 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, and outstanding performance when used in rechargeable aqueous and flexible Zn-air batteries. The evolution pathway for SAs demonstrated in this work offers a novel strategy to design SACs with various coordination environment and enhanced electrocatalytic activity.  相似文献

Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted growing attention because they maximize the number of active sites, with unpredictable catalytic activity. Despite numerous studies on SACs, there is little research on the support, which is essential to understanding SAC. Herein, we systematically investigated the influence of the support on the performance of the SAC by comparing with single‐atom Pt supported on carbon (Pt SA/C) and Pt nanoparticles supported on WO3?x (Pt NP/WO3?x). The results revealed that the support effect was maximized for atomically dispersed Pt supported on WO3?x (Pt SA/WO3?x). The Pt SA/WO3?x exhibited a higher degree of hydrogen spillover from Pt atoms to WO3?x at the interface, compared with Pt NP/WO3?x, which drastically enhanced Pt mass activity for hydrogen evolution (up to 10 times). This strategy provides a new framework for enhancing catalytic activity for HER, by reducing noble metal usage in the field of SACs.  相似文献

Fine-tuning electronic structures of single-atom catalysts (SACs) plays a crucial role in harnessing their catalytic activities, yet challenges remain at a molecular scale in a controlled fashion. By tailoring the structure of graphdiyne (GDY) with electron-withdrawing/-donating groups, we show herein the electronic perturbation of Cu single-atom CO2 reduction catalysts in a molecular way. The elaborately introduced functional groups (−F, −H and −OMe) can regulate the valance state of Cuδ+, which is found to be directly scaled with the selectivity of the electrochemical CO2-to-CH4 conversion. An optimum CH4 Faradaic efficiency of 72.3 % was achieved over the Cu SAC on the F-substituted GDY. In situ spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations revealed that the positive Cuδ+ centers adjusted by the electron-withdrawing group decrease the pKa of adsorbed H2O, promoting the hydrogenation of intermediates toward the CH4 production. Our strategy paves the way for precise electronic perturbation of SACs toward efficient electrocatalysis.  相似文献

Kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (orr) and the hydrogen evolution–oxidation reactions (her/hor) were studied on the Pt(111) and Pt(100) surfaces in 0.05 M H2SO4 containing Cl. The orr is strongly inhibited on the (100) surface modified by adsorbed Cl (Clad), and it occurs as a 3.5e reduction via solution phase peroxide formation. In the hydrogen adsorption (Hupd) potential region, the orr is even more inhibited, and corresponds only to a 2 e reduction at the negative potential limit where the electrode is covered by one monolayer of Hupd and some (unknown) amount of Clad. On the Pt(111)---Clad surface, the orr is inhibited relatively little (in addition to that caused by strong bisulfate anion adsorption on this surface), and the reaction pathway is the same as in Cl free solution. The kinetics of the hor on Pt(111) are the same in pure solution and in a solution containing Cl, since Clad does not affect platinum sites required for the breaking of the H---H bond. A relatively large inhibition of the hor is observed on the (100) surface, implying that strongly adsorbed Clad is present on the surface even near 0 V.  相似文献

A DFT quantum-chemical study of NO adsorption and reactivity on the Cu20 and Cu16 metal clusters showed that only the molecular form of NO is stabilized on the copper surface. The heat of monomolecular adsorption was calculated to be ΔH m = ?49.9 kJ/mol, while dissociative adsorption of NO is energetically unfavorable, ΔH d = + 15.7 kJ/mol, and dissociation demands a very high activation energy, E a = + 125.4 kJ/mol. Because of the absence of NO dissociation on the copper surface, the formation mechanism of the reduction products, N2 and N2O, is debatable since the surface reaction ultimately leads to N-O bond cleavage. As the reaction occurs with a very low activation energy, E a = 7.3 kJ/mol, interpretation of the NO direct reduction mechanism is both an important and intriguing problem because the binding energy in the NO molecule is high (630 kJ/mol) and the experimental studies revealed only physically adsorbed forms on the copper surface. It was found that the formation mechanism of the N2 and N2O reduction products involves formation (on the copper surface) of the (OadN-NOad) dimer intermediate that is chemisorbed via the oxygen atoms and characterized by a stable N-N bond (r N-N ~1.3 Å). The N-N binding between the adsorbed NO molecules occurs through electron-accepting interaction between the oxygen atoms in NO and the metal atoms on the “defective” copper surface. The electronic structure of the (OadN-NOad) surface dimer is characterized by excess electron density (ON-NO)δ? and high reactivity in N-Oad bond dissociation. The calculated activation energy of the destruction of the chemisorbed intermediate (OadN-NOad) is very low (E a = 5–10 kJ/mol), which shows that it is kinetically unstable against the instantaneous release of the N2 and N2O reduction products into the gas phase and cannot be identified by modern experimental methods of metal surface studies. At the same time, on the MgO surface and in the individual (Ph3P)2Pt(O2N2) complex, a stable (OadN-NOad) dimer was revealed experimentally.  相似文献

Single atom catalysts (SAC) for water splitting hold the promise of producing H2 in a highly efficient and economical way. As the performance of SACs depends on the interaction between the adsorbate atom and supporting substrate, developing more efficient SACs with suitable substrates is of significance. In this work, inspired by the successful fabrications of borophene in experiments, we systematically study the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities of a series of 3d transition metal-based SACs supported by various borophene monolayers (BMs=α_sheet, α1_sheet, and β1_sheet borophene), TM/BMs, using density functional theory calculations and kinetic simulations. All of the TM/BMs systems exhibit superior HER performance compared to Pt with close to zero thermoneutral Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) of H adsorption. Furthermore, three Ni-deposited systems, namely, Ni/α_BM, Ni/α1_BM and Ni/β1_BM, were identified to be superior OER catalysts with remarkably reduced overpotentials. Based on these results, Ni/BMs can be expected to serve as stunning bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting. This work provides a guideline for developing efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Despite extensive efforts to develop high-performance H2 evolution catalysts, this remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate the use of Cd/Pt precursor solutions for significant photocatalytic H2 production (154.7 mmol g−1 h−1), removing the need for a pre-synthesized photocatalyst. In addition, we also report simultaneous in situ synthesis of Pt single-atoms anchored CdS nanoparticles (PtSA-CdSIS) during photoirradiation. The highly dispersed in situ incorporation of extensive Pt single atoms on CdSIS enables the enhancement of active sites and suppresses charge recombination, which results in exceptionally high solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of ≈1 % and an apparent quantum yield of over 91 % (365 nm) for H2 production. Our work not only provides a promising strategy for maximising H2 production efficiency but also provides a green process for H2 production and the synthesis of highly photoactive PtSA-CdSIS nanoparticles.  相似文献

Single-atom catalysts provide a pathway to elucidate the nature of catalytically active sites. However, keeping them stabilized during operation proves to be challenging. Herein, we employ cryptomelane-type octahedral molecular sieve nanorods featuring abundant manganese vacancy defects as a support, to periodically anchor single-atom Ag. The doped Ag atoms with tetrahedral coordination are found to locate at cation substitution sites rather than being supported on the catalyst surface, thus effectively tuning the electronic structure of adjacent manganese atoms. The resulting unique Ag–O–MnOx unit functions as the active site. Its turnover frequency reaches 1038 h−1, one order of magnitude higher than for previously reported catalysts, with 90% selectivity for anti-Markovnikov phenylacetaldehyde. Mechanistic studies reveal that the activation of styrene on the ensemble site of Ag–O–MnOx is significantly promoted, which can accelerate the oxidation of styrene and, in particular, the rate-determining step of forming the epoxide intermediate. Such an extraordinary electronic promotion can be extended to other single-atom catalysts and paves the way for their practical applications.

Manganese vacancy-confined single-atom Ag in cryptomelane nanorods efficiently catalyses Wacker oxidation of styrene derivatives.  相似文献
