In this paper, fully developed laminar flow convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through a uniformly heated horizontal tube with and without wire coil inserts is presented. For this purpose, Al2O3 nanoparticles of 43 nm size were synthesized, characterized and dispersed in distilled water to form stable suspension containing 0.1% volume concentration of nanoparticles. The Nusselt number in the fully developed region were measured and found to increase by 12.24% at Re = 2275 for plain tube with nanofluid compared to distilled water. Two wire coil inserts made of stainless steel with pitch ratios 2 and 3 were used which increased the Nusselt numbers by 15.91% and 21.53% respectively at Re = 2275 with nanofluid compared to distilled water. The better heat transfer performance of nanofluid with wire coil insert is attributed to the effects of dispersion or back-mixing which flattens the temperature distribution and make the temperature gradient between the fluid and wall steeper. The measured pressure loss with the use of nanofluids is almost equal to that of the distilled water. The empirical correlations developed for Nusselt number and friction factor in terms of Reynolds/Peclet number, pitch ratio and volume concentration fits with the experimental data within ±15%.  相似文献

Effects of peripherally-cut twisted tape insert on heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance factor characteristics in a round tube were investigated. Nine different peripherally-cut twisted tapes with constant twist ratio (y/W = 3.0) and different three tape depth ratios (DR = d/W = 0.11, 0.22 and 0.33), each with three different tape width ratios (WR = w/W = 0.11, 0.22 and 0.33) were tested. Besides, one typical twisted tape was also tested for comparison. The measurement of heat transfer rate was conducted under uniform heat flux condition while that of friction factor was performed under isothermal condition. Tests were performed with Reynolds number in a range from 1000 to 20,000, using water as a working fluid. The experimental results revealed that both heat transfer rate and friction factor in the tube equipped with the peripherally-cut twisted tapes were significantly higher than those in the tube fitted with the typical twisted tape and plain tube, especially in the laminar flow regime. The higher turbulence intensity of fluid in the vicinity of the tube wall generated by the peripherally-cut twisted tape compared to that induced by the typical twisted tape is referred as the main reason for achieved results. The obtained results also demonstrated that as the depth ratio increased and width ratio decreased, the heat transfer enhancement increased. Over the range investigated, the peripherally-cut twisted tape enhanced heat transfer rates in term of Nusselt numbers up to 2.6 times (turbulent regime) and 12.8 times (laminar regime) of that in the plain tube. These corresponded to the maximum performance factors of 1.29 (turbulent regime) and 4.88 (laminar regime).  相似文献

An extensive experimental campaign has been carried out for the measurement of saturated critical heat flux in a multi-microchannel copper heat sink. The heat sink was formed by 29 parallel channels that were 199 μm wide and 756 μm deep. In order to increase the critical heat flux and reduce the two-phase pressure drop, a split flow system was implemented with one central inlet at the middle of the channels and two outlets at either end. The base critical heat flux was measured using three HFC Refrigerants (R134a, R236fa and R245fa) for mass fluxes ranging from 250 to 1500 kg/m2 s, inlet subcoolings from ?25 to ?5 K and saturation temperatures from 20 to 50 °C. The parametric effects of mass velocity, saturation temperature and inlet subcooling were investigated. The analysis showed that significantly higher CHF was obtainable with the split flow system (one inlet–two outlets) compared to the single inlet–single outlet system, providing also a much lower pressure drop. Notably several existing predictive methods matched the experimental data quite well and quantitatively predicted the benefit of higher CHF of the split flow.  相似文献

This study analyzes the use of a carbon fiber epoxy heat sink for evaporator surface enhancement in a FC-72 thermosyphon. The pin-fin heat sink features 945 small-cross-section (1.27 mm by 0.965 mm) fins fabricated with an integral base plate. These fins have a high thermal conductivity (500 W/m K) along the length of the fin. The influence of heat load, thermosyphon fill volume, and condenser operating temperature on the overall thermal performance is examined. The results of this experiment provide significant insight into the possible implementation and potential benefits of carbon-fiber heat sink technology in two-phase flow leading to significant improvements in thermal management strategies for advanced electronics.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of duct height on heat transfer enhancement of a surface affixed with arrays (7 × 7) of short rectangular plate fins of a co-rotating type pattern in the duct. An infrared imaging system is used to measure detailed distributions of the heat transfer at the endwall along with the fin base. An infrared camera of TVS 8000 with 160 × 120 point In–Sb sensor was used to measure the temperature distributions in order to calculate the local heat transfer coefficients of the representative fin regions. Pressure drop and heat transfer experiments were performed for a co-rotating fin pattern varying the duct height from 20?50 mm. The friction factor calculated from the pressure drop shows that comparatively larger friction occurs for the smaller duct cases and the friction factor slowly decreases with increasing Reynolds number. The effect of duct height on the area-averaged heat transfer results show that heat transfer initially increases with duct height and then finally decreases with increasing the duct height. Detailed heat transfer analysis and iso-heat transfer coefficient contour gives a clear picture of heat transfer characteristics of the overall surface. The relative performance graph indicates that a 25 mm duct is the optimum duct height for the highest thermal performance. In addition, a significant thermal enhancement, 2.8?3.8 times the smooth surface, can be achieved at lower Reynolds number with a co-rotating fin pattern in the duct.  相似文献

The rapid development of two-phase microfluidic devices has triggered the demand for a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics inside microchannel heat sinks to advance the cooling process of micro-electronics. The present study focuses on the experimental investigation of pressure drop characteristics and flow visualization of a two-phase flow in a silicon microchannel heat sink. The microchannel heat sink consists of a rectangular silicon chip in which 45 rectangular microchannels were chemically etched with a depth of 276 μm, width of 225 μm, and a length of 16 mm. Experiments are carried out for mass fluxes ranging from 341 to 531 kg/m2 s and heat fluxes from 60.4 to 130.6 kW/m2 using FC-72 as the working fluid. Bubble growth and flow regimes are observed using high speed visualization. Three major flow regimes are identified: bubbly, slug, and annular. The frictional two-phase pressure drop increases with exit quality for a constant mass flux. An assessment of various pressure drop correlations reported in the literature is conducted for validation. A new general correlation is developed to predict the two-phase pressure drop in microchannel heat sinks for five different refrigerants. The experimental pressure drops for laminar-liquid laminar-vapor and laminar-liquid turbulent-vapor flow conditions are predicted by the new correlation with mean absolute errors of 10.4% and 14.5%, respectively.  相似文献

Based on experimental investigations the present study evaluates instability and heat transfer phenomenon under condition of periodic flow boiling of water and ethanol in parallel triangular micro-channels. Tests were performed in the range of hydraulic diameter 100–220 μm, mass flux 32–200 kg/m2 s, heat flux 120–270 kW/m2, vapor quality x = 0.01–0.08. The period between successive events depends on the boiling number and decreases with an increase in the boiling number. The initial film thickness decreases with increasing heat flux. When the liquid film reached the minimum initial film thickness CHF regime occurred. Temporal variations of pressure drop, fluid and heater temperatures were periodic. Oscillation frequency is the same for the pressure drop, for the fluid temperature at the outlet manifold, and for the mean and maximum heater temperature fluctuations. All these fluctuations are in phase. The CHF phenomenon is different from that observed in a single channel of conventional size. A key difference between micro-channel heat sink and single conventional channel is amplification of parallel-channel instability prior to CHF. The dimensionless experimental values of the heat transfer coefficient are presented as the Nusselt number dependence on the Eotvos number and the boiling number.  相似文献

In this paper, two modified types of polypropylene (PP) with high thermal conductivity up to 2.3 W/m K and 16.5 W/m K are used to manufacture the finned-tube heat exchangers, which are prospected to be used in liquid desiccant air conditioning, heat recovery, water source heat pump, sea water desalination, etc. A third plastic heat exchanger is also manufactured with ordinary PP for validation and comparison. Experiments are carried out to determine the thermal performance of the plastic heat exchangers. It is found that the plastic finned-tube heat exchanger with thermal conductivity of 16.5 W/m K can achieve overall heat transfer coefficient of 34 W/m2 K. The experimental results are compared with calculation and they agree well with each other. Finally, the effect of material thermal conductivity on heat exchanger thermal performance is studied in detail. The results show that there is a threshold value of material thermal conductivity. Below this value improving thermal conductivity can considerably improve the heat exchanger performance while over this value improving thermal conductivity contributes very little to performance enhancement. For the finned-tube heat exchanger designed in this paper, when the plastic thermal conductivity can reach over 15 W/m K, it can achieve more than 95% of the titanium heat exchanger performance and 84% of the aluminum or copper heat exchanger performance with the same dimension.  相似文献

An optical measurement method using image processing for two-phase flow pattern characterization in minichannel is developed. The bubble frequency, the percentage of small bubbles as well as their velocity are measured. A high-speed high-definition video camera is used to measure these parameters and to identify the flow regimes and their transitions. The tests are performed in a 3.0 mm glass channel using saturated R-245fa at 60 °C (4.6 bar). The mass velocity is ranging from 100 to 1500 kg/m2 s, the heat flux is varying from 10 to 90 kW/m2 and the inlet vapor quality from 0 to 1. Four flow patterns (bubbly flow, bubbly–slug flow, slug flow and annular flow) are recognized. The comparison between the present experimental intermittent/annular transition lines and five transition lines from macroscale and microscale flow pattern maps available in the literature is presented. Finally, the influence of the flow pattern on the heat transfer coefficient is highlighted.  相似文献

Air-side heat transfer and friction characteristics of five kinds of fin-and-tube heat exchangers, with the number of tube rows (N = 12) and the diameter of tubes (Do = 18 mm), have been experimentally investigated. The test samples consist of five types of fin configurations: crimped spiral fin, plain fin, slit fin, fin with delta-wing longitudinal vortex generators (VGs) and mixed fin with front 6-row vortex-generator fin and rear 6-row slit fin. The heat transfer and friction factor correlations for different types of heat exchangers were obtained with the Reynolds numbers ranging from 4000 to 10000. It was found that crimped spiral fin provides higher heat transfer and pressure drop than the other four fins. The air-side performance of heat exchangers with the above five fins has been evaluated under three sets of criteria and it was shown that the heat exchanger with mixed fin (front vortex-generator fin and rear slit fin) has better performance than that with fin with delta-wing vortex generators, and the slit fin offers best heat transfer performance at high Reynolds numbers. Based on the correlations of numerical data, Genetic Algorithm optimization was carried out, and the optimization results indicated that the increase of VG attack angle or length, or decrease of VG height may enhance the performance of vortex-generator fin. The heat transfer performances for optimized vortex-generator fin and slit fin at hand have been compared with numerical method.  相似文献

The present paper, describes our experimental results on the viscosity of the nanofluid prepared by dispersing alumina nanoparticles (<50 nm) in commercial car coolant. The nanofluid prepared with calculated amount of oleic acid (surfactant) was tested to be stable for more than 80 days. The viscosity of the nanofluids is measured both as a function of alumina volume fraction and temperature between 10 and 50 °C. While the pure base fluid display Newtonian behavior over the measured temperature, it transforms to a non-Newtonian fluid with addition of a small amount of alumina nanoparticles. Our results show that viscosity of the nanofluid increases with increasing nanoparticle concentration and decreases with increase in temperature. Most of the frequently used classical models severely under predict the measured viscosity. Volume fraction dependence of the nanofluid viscosity, however, is predicted fairly well on the basis of a recently reported theoretical model for nanofluids that takes into account the effect of Brownian motion of nanoparticles in the nanofluid. The temperature dependence of the viscosity of engine coolant based alumina nanofluids obeys the empirical correlation of the type: log (μnf) = A exp(BT), proposed earlier by Namburu et al.  相似文献

In the commercial test for smooth tube inserted with rotors-assembled strand comparing with non-inserted ones on condensers in electric power plant, using water as working fluid, the single-phase pressure drop and heat transfer were measured. It was found difficult to receive reliable and accurate enough data through commercial test. Meanwhile, the single-phase pressure drop and heat transfer in a rotors-assembled strand inserted tube were measured in laboratory, with the tube side Prandtl numbers varying from 5.67 to 5.80 and the tube side Reynolds numbers varying from 21,300 to 72,200. Before that, a validation experiment based on the same smooth tube was carried out to testify the experimental system and the data reduction method, in which fixed mounts were employed to eliminate entrance effects. The Prandtl numbers varied from 5.64 to 5.76 and the Reynolds numbers varied from 19,000 to 56,000 in the tube. The annular side Reynolds numbers remained nearly constant at the value of around 50,000 for all experiments, with the annular side Prandtl numbers varying from 8.02 to 8.22. The experimental results of smooth tube show that employment of fixed mounts leads to a visible bias of friction factor at relative low Reynolds numbers while it hardly affects the Nusselt numbers. On the other hand, experiment for the tube inserted with rotors-assembled strand show remarkable improvement for heat transfer with the Nusselt number increased by 9.764–11.87% and the overall heat transfer coefficient increased by 7.08–7.49% within the range of Reynolds number from about 21,300 to 55,500. Meanwhile, friction factor increases inevitably by 278.1–353.9% within the same range of Reynolds number. Based on through multivariant linear normal regression method, the Reynolds number and Prandtl number dependencies of the Nusselt number and friction factor were determined to be Nu = 0.0031Re0.9Pr1.0849 and f = 0.993Re−0.22.  相似文献

Present research highlights the potential of apparatuses with integrated minichannel packings to intensify gas-liquid-solid contacting. Especially an operation of these devices within the Taylor flow regime gained extraordinary attention due to its excellent heat and mass transfer and the segmented flow characteristics. However, criteria for flow regime transitions are mainly developed from water-similar fluids and are contradictory which hinders uniform flow regime prediction. This work presents a systematic analysis of adiabatic gas-liquid downflow in a square minichannel of 1.0 mm hydraulic diameter. In the mixing zone located within the flow channel, gas was injected into the co-flowing liquid by so-called capillary injectors with variable inner diameter (0.184, 0.317, 0.490 mm). Experiments were conducted using water, water-glycerol, and water-ethanol mixtures to cover a broad range of material properties. The gas and liquid superficial velocities were varied between 9.81·10-4…2.72 m/s and 1.7·10−4…0.80 m/s, respectively. Taylor flow, Taylor-annular flow, annular flow, churn flow, and bubbly flow were observed. Using the Pi-theorem, 8 significant dimensionless groups dictating the flow transition were identified, namely uG, s/uL, s, ReG, ReL, WeG, WeL, Θ*, dIn, CI/dh, and dOu, CI/dh. Based on more than 1500 experimental data, criteria for the regime transitions of Taylor flow are provided. The derived flow regime map shows good agreement for all applied liquids and for the two larger injector geometries.  相似文献

Current research proofs the potential of apparatuses containing minichannel flow structures to intensify gas-liquid-solid contacting processes. The excellent heat and mass transfer in these devices as well as a sharp RTD mainly result from the Taylor flow regime. A proper design of corresponding contactors requires precise information on the provided interfacial areas. However, the characterisation of gas-liquid Taylor flow with industrially relevant fluids at elevated pressure and created by capillary injection devices gained little attention so far. This work analyses adiabatic gas-liquid Taylor flow in a square minichannel of 1.0 mm hydraulic diameter using water, water-glycerol, or water-ethanol mixtures as liquid phase and hydrogen or nitrogen as gas phase to cover a broad range of material parameters. In the mixing zone located within the flow channel, gas was injected into the co-flowing liquid by so-called capillary injectors with variable inner diameter (0.184, 0.317, 0.490 mm).Two different bubble forming mechanisms were identified leading to a complex interaction between physical properties of the fluids, geometrical parameters and the observed gas bubble and liquid slug lengths. According to the Pi-theorem, these lengths were affected by 6 dimensionless groups, namely (uG,s/ uL,s), ReL, WeL, (dIn,CI/ dh), (dOu,CI / dh), and Θ*. Based on more than 370 experimental data, novel correlations to predict gas bubble and liquid slug lengths were developed.  相似文献

Numerical investigation is made for three-dimensional fluid flow and convective heat transfer from an array of solid and perforated fins that are mounted on a flat plate. Incompressible air as working fluid is modeled using Navier–Stokes equations and RNG based k ? ? turbulent model is used to predict turbulent flow parameters. Temperature field inside the fins is obtained by solving Fourier’s conduction equation. The conjugate differential equations for both solid and gas phase are solved simultaneously by finite volume procedure using SIMPLE algorithm. Perforations such as small channels with square cross section are arranged streamwise along the fin’s length and their numbers varied from 1 to 3. Flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers from 2 × 104 to 4 × 104 based on the fin length and Prandtl number is taken Pr = 0.71. Numerical computations are validated with experimental studies of the previous investigators and good agreements were observed. Results show that fins with longitudinal pores, have remarkable heat transfer enhancement in addition to the considerable reduction in weight by comparison with solid fins.  相似文献

The heat transfer and the pressure drop characteristics of laminar flow of viscous oil (195 < Pr < 525) through rectangular and square ducts with internal transverse rib turbulators on two opposite surfaces of the ducts and with wire coil inserts have been studied experimentally. Circular duct has also been used. The transverse ribs in combination with wire coil inserts have been found to perform better than either ribs or wire coil inserts acting alone. The heat transfer and the pressure drop measurements have been taken in separate test sections. Heat transfer tests were carried out in electrically heated stainless steel ducts incorporating uniform wall heat flux boundary conditions. Pressure drop tests were carried out in acrylic ducts. The flow friction and thermal characteristics are governed by duct aspect ratio, coil helix angle and wire diameter of the coil, rib height and rib spacing, Reynolds number and Prandtl number. Correlations developed for friction factor and Nusselt number have predicted the experimental data satisfactorily. The performance of the geometry under investigation has been evaluated. It has been found that on the basis of constant pumping power, up to fifty per cent heat duty increase occurs for the combined ribs and wire coil inserts case compared to the individual ribs and wire coil inserts cases in the measured experimental parameters space. On the constant heat duty basis, the pumping power has been reduced up to forty per cent for the combined enhancement geometry than the individual enhancement geometries.  相似文献

The current work focuses on the pressure drop, heat transfer and stability in two phase flow in microchannels with hydraulic diameter of less than one hundred microns. Experiments were conducted in smooth microchannels of hydraulic diameter of 45, 65 μm, and a rough microchannel of hydraulic diameter of 70 μm, with deionised water as the working fluid. The local saturation pressure and temperature vary substantially over the length of the channel. In order to correctly predict the local saturation temperature and subsequently the heat transfer characteristics, numerical techniques have been used in conjunction with the conventional two phase pressure drop models. The Lockhart–Martinelli (liquid–laminar, vapour–laminar) model is found to predict the two phase pressure drop data within 20%. The instability in two phase flow is quantified; it is found that microchannels of smaller hydraulic diameter have lesser instabilities as compared to their larger counterparts. The experiments also suggest that surface characteristics strongly affect flow stability in the two phase flow regime. The effect of hydraulic diameter and surface characteristics on the flow characteristics and stability in two phase flow is seldom reported, and is of considerable practical relevance.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations of channel wall temperature during flow boiling microchannel flows using infrared thermography are presented and analyzed. In particular, the top channel wall temperature in a branching microchannel silicon heat sink is measured non-intrusively. Using this technique, time-averaged temperature measurements, with a spatial resolution of 10 μm, are presented over an 18 mm × 18 mm area of the heat sink. Also presented, within a specific sub-region of the heat sink, are intensity maps that are recorded at a rate of 120 frames per second. Time series data at selected point locations in this sub-region are analyzed for their frequency content, and dominant temperature fluctuations are extracted using proper orthogonal decomposition. Results at low-vapor-quality boiling condition indicate that temperatures can be determined from recorded radiation intensities with a temperature uncertainty varying from 0.9 °C at 25 °C to 1.0 °C at 125 °C. The time series data indicate periodic wall temperature fluctuations of approximately 2 °C that are attributed to the passage of vapor slugs. A dominant band of frequencies around 2–4 Hz is suggested by the frequency analysis. Proper orthogonal decomposition results indicate that first six orthogonal modes account for approximately 90% of the variance in temperature. The first mode reconstruction accounts for temporal variations in the dataset in the sub-region analyzed; however the magnitude of fluctuations and spatial variations in temperature are not accurately captured. A reconstruction using the first 25 modes is considered sufficient to capture both the temporal and spatial variations in the data.  相似文献

This paper reports an experimental investigation of the heat transfer performance of the new low-GWP refrigerants, R1234yf and R1234ze(E), during flow boiling heat transfer inside a horizontal high porosity copper foam with 5 Pores Per Inch (PPI). Metal foams are a class of cellular structured materials consisting of a stochastic distribution of interconnected pores; these materials have been proposed as effective solutions for heat transfer enhancement during both single and two-phase heat transfer. R1234yf and R1234ze(E) refrigerants are appealing alternatives of the more traditional R134a by virtue of their negligible values of GWP and normal boiling temperatures close to that of R134a, which make them suitable solution in several different applications, such as: refrigeration and air conditioning and electronic thermal management. This work compares the two-phase heat transfer behaviour of these new HFO refrigerants, studying the boiling process inside a porous medium and permitting to understand their effective heat transfer capabilities. The experimental measurements were carried out by imposing three different heat fluxes: 50, 75, and 100 kW m−2, at a constant saturation temperature of 30 °C; the refrigerant mass velocity was varied between 50 and 200 kg m−2 s−1, whilst the mean vapour quality varied from 0.2 to 0.95. The two-phase heat transfer and pressure drop performance of the two new HFO refrigerants is compared against that of the more traditional R134a.  相似文献

Experiments of air water two-phase flow pressure drop in vertical internally wavy 90° bend have been carried out. The tested bends are flexible and made of stainless steel with inner diameter of 50 mm and various curvature radiuses of 200, 300, 400 and 500 mm. The experiments were performed under the following conditions of two-phase parameters; mass flux from 350 to 750 kg/m2 s. Gas quality from 1% to 50% and system pressure from 4 to 7.5 bar. The results demonstrate that the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is very significant at high ranges of mass flow quality. Due to the increasing of two-phase flow resistance, energy dissipations, friction losses and interaction of the two-phases in the vertical internally wavy 90° bend the total pressure drops are perceptible about 2–5 times grater than that in smooth bends. Based on the mass and energy balance as well as the presented experimental results, new empirical correlation has been developed to calculate the two-phase pressure drop and hence the two-phase friction factor of the tested bends. The correlation includes the relevant primary parameter, fit the data well, and is sufficiency accurate for engineering purposes.  相似文献
