During the last several years, our TRAP collaboration has pioneered techniques for slowing, trapping, cooling and indefinitely storing antiprotons to energies more than 1010 times lower than previously possible. The radio signal from a single trapped antiproton is now being used for precision measurements. Many cold antiprotons are stacked as another important step toward the eventual production of antihydrogen, and positrons have been trapped in vacuum.  相似文献

We report the first results on uniaxial stress-induced frequency shifts in an Fe single crystal. Stress was applied along the 100 axis, which was also the axis of magnetization induced by an external field. The observed frequency shift was –0.34±0.023 MHz per 100 microstrain, which corresponds to B/=+25.1±1.6 G/100. The positive sign arises from the negative sign of B itself. This result is interpreted as follows: The stress induces a statistical population shift between magnetically inequivalent sites. Extrapolations from the calculations of Sugimoto and Fukai from Nb and V to Fe yield order of magnitude agreement. The 4T(0) site system seems more likely.  相似文献

The irreducible representations of the states of the first and second nearest neighbour Cr3+ pairs in ruby were deduced from the known states of the single ions by the group theoretical method of induction. In a systematic study of the transfer process to sulphur dioxide, in seven different H2 + SO2 gas mixtures, the time spectra of the muonic sulphur X-rays yield muon transfer rates to the SO2 molecule, deduced from the lifetimes of the p atoms, which agree all well with each other. The muonic oxygen time spectra show an additional structure as if p atoms of another kind were present. Reduced transfer ratesO are reproducible if one uses the model of ephemeral p atoms. The intensity ratios between the different kinds of p atoms are also discussed in the framework of this model and the one of black and white p atoms.  相似文献

We study the spectrum of appropriate reduced density matrices for a model consisting of one quantum particle (electron) in a classical fluid (of protons) at thermal equilibrium. The quantum and classical particles interact by a shortrange, attractive potential such that the quantum particle can form atomic bound states with a single classical particle. We consider two models for the classical component: an ideal gas and the cell model of a fluid. We find that when the system is at low density the spectrum of the electron-proton pair density matrix has, in addition to a continuous part, a discrete part that is associated with atomic bound states. In the high-density limit the discrete eigenvalues disappear in the case of the cell model, indicating the existence of pressure ionization or a Mott effect according to a general criterion for characterizing bound and ionized electron-proton pairs in a plasma proposed recently by M. Girardeau. For the ideal gas model, on the other hand, eigenvalues remain even at high density.  相似文献

Compact pinch plasma devices are intense sources of pulsed EUV radiation with output energies of several joules per pulse in single lines. Their spectrum peaks in a wavelength range where conventional x-ray tubes provide poor intensity. With correct optimization, both continuous radiation or line radiation with / > 1000 can be produced for broadband and narrowband applications, respectively. Because of their low cost and their compact size, pinch plasmas seem well suited to supplement research activities based on synchrotron radiation.In this paper, pinch plasma sources developed for x-ray lithography and x-ray microscopy are described. Their emission characteristics are optimized with regard to specific requirements given by the particular application and are compared to laser produced plasmas. The lithography source is compatible with the electron storage ring printing process with respect to its spectrum and enables full-depth exposures in 1-m-thick 60 mJ cm-2 sensitivity resist at resolution below 0.2 m within 10 minutes. The source for microscopy applications enables flash imaging of biological specimens with suboptical resolution (0.1–0.2 m) at nanosecond exposure times. In addition, the averaged plasma parameters meet the requirements for an EUV laser medium. The nitrogen 2–3 transition is especially promising for achieving amplified spontaneous emission of hydrogen-like or helium-like ions excited by three-body or charge exchange recombination.  相似文献

As is known, the second approximation in the calculation of the partition function by the traces method of ferromagnetic thin films gives wrong results for the coordination number equal to eight. In order to obtain correct results even for this case, the third order approximation of the partition function is developed and thus the magnetic properties of body-centred cubic iron thin films are studied. The dependence of the Curie temperature on the thickness, for different values of the ratio between the anisotropy constant and the exchange energy between two neighbours, is discussed. A value can be chosen for this ratio such that the thin film becomes ferromagnetic only for a thickness greater than a definite value.

The paper describes microscopic investigation into the spectral distribution of photo-luminescence and its polarization on hexagonal ZnS monocrystals in relation to the structural defects of such crystals. These observations, as well as birefringent observations, show that the values of the birefringence and the degree of polarization in different stripes of the same crystal are the same within the limits of observational errors.

The term frame of reference is defined for both classical physics and quantum mechanics. The definition is the usual one, simply made explicit. It is used in the study of coherent superposition, and in particular the dependence on the observer (frame of reference) of the coherence of superposition of state vectors. This dependence is then used as the basis of an analysis of a criticism of previous work on the nonexistence of superselection rules. We again reach the conclusion that they do not exist.  相似文献

An extremum principle was postulated by Horne, Finkelstein, Shull, Zeilinger, and Bernstein in order to derive the physically allowable parameters for sinusoidal standing waves governing a neutron in a crystal which is immersed in a strong external magnetic field: the expectation value of the total potential V is an extremum. We show that this extremum principle can be obtained from the variational principle used by Schrodinger to derive his nonrelativistic wave equation. We rederive the solutions found by the above-mentioned authors as well as some additional solutions.  相似文献

Results are given for the oxidation kinetics of niobium in air at 500–1000 °C, together with x-ray data on the oxides; -Nb2O5 (orthorhombic) is formed up to 850 °C, and above this -Nb2O5, also orthorhombic but with lattice constants nearly twice as large. In a recent note Barber showed, for a spin-1/2 Ising system with ferromagnetic pair interactions, that some critical exponents of the triplet order parameter i j k are the same as those of the magnetization i . Here we prove such results for all odd correlations and dispense with the requirement of pair interactions. We also prove that the critical temperatureT c , defined as the temperature below which there is a spontaneous magnetization, is for fixed even spin interactionsJ e independent of the way in which the odd interactionsJ o approach zero from above. The paper explains the theory of modelling electrostatic fields by a resistance network. The conditions, which the resistance network must satisfy, are derived and the question of modelling electrodes of different shapes is solved. The finished network and the results obtained on it when modelling a jet for a linear h-f accelerator of electrons are described. Particular attention is paid to the influence of a space charge, the modelling of which is an advantage of this method.

We analyze the low-temperature phase of ferromagnetic Kax-Ising models in dimensionsd2. We show that if the range of interactions is –1, then two disjoint translation-invariant Gibbs states exist if the inverse temperature satisfies –1N, where =d(1–)/(2d+2)(d+1), for any >0. The proof involves the blocking procedure usual for Kac models and also a contour representation for the resulting long-range (almost) continuous-spin system which is suitable for the use of a variant of the Peierls argument.  相似文献

We consider an ensemble of three-level configuration atoms in an optical cavity, interacting through two-photon transitions with a cavity mode, driven by a broad-band squeezed input of finite amplitude. The atom-cavity system is coupled to reservoirs to describe the losses of the atoms and the cavity. Optical spectra in the transmitted and the reflected field are calculated and analysed in the good cavity limit, for the purely absorptive resonant case and the general case, respectively.  相似文献

Any mathematical formalization of scientific activity allows for imperfections in the methodology that is formalized. These can be of three types, dirty, rotten, and dammed. Restricting mathematical attention to those methods that cannot be construed to be imperfect drastically reduces the class of objects that must be analyzed, and relates all other objects to these more regular ones.
