In this work, the different adsorption properties of H and alkali metal atoms on the basal plane of graphite are studied and compared using a density functional method on the same model chemistry level. The results show that H prefers the "on-top site" while alkali metals favor the "middle hollow site" of graphite basal plane due to the unique electronic structures of H, alkali metals, and graphite. H has a higher electronegativity than carbon, preferring to form a covalent bond with C atoms, whereas alkaline metals have lower electronegativity, tending to adsorb on the highest electrostatic potential sites. During adsorption, there are more charges transferred from alkali metal to graphite than from H to graphite.

The structure of a monolayer film of the branched alkane squalane (C30H62) adsorbed on graphite has been studied by neutron diffraction and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and compared with a similar study of the n-alkane tetracosane (n-C24H52). Both molecules have 24 carbon atoms along their backbone and squalane has, in addition, six methyl side groups. Upon adsorption, there are significant differences as well as similarities in the behavior of these molecular films. Both molecules form ordered structures at low temperatures; however, while the melting point of the two-dimensional (2D) tetracosane film is roughly the same as the bulk melting point, the surface strongly stabilizes the 2D squalane film such that its melting point is 91 K above its value in bulk. Therefore, squalane, like tetracosane, will be a poor lubricant in those nanoscale devices that require a fluid lubricant at room temperature. The neutron diffraction data show that the translational order in the squalane monolayer is significantly less than in the tetracosane monolayer. The authors' MD simulations suggest that this is caused by a distortion of the squalane molecules upon adsorption on the graphite surface. When the molecules are allowed to relax on the surface, they distort such that all six methyl groups point away from the surface. This results in a reduction in the monolayer's translational order characterized by a decrease in its coherence length and hence a broadening of the diffraction peaks. The MD simulations also show that the melting mechanism in the squalane monolayer is the same footprint reduction mechanism found in the tetracosane monolayer, where a chain melting drives the lattice melting.

A range of transition metal film substrates (Mo, W, Pt, Ni, Fe, Cu, V, Zn) exhibit no clear chemical shifts in their ESCA or Auger peaks on adsorption of a monolayer equivalent of oxygen or carbon monoxide, though in some cases asymmetric broadening of the peaks may be ascribable to a small chemical shift of a component of the peak. This compares to the large shifts that can occur in these peaks on bulk oxidation to many atomic layers depth. In addition the spectra of the clean substrates show no indication of a difference in the surface layer of atoms. These results are not unexpected, but are in contradiction to some previously reported data. They suggest that attempts to follow chemisorption processes by monitoring chemical shifts of substrate peaks are likely to prove unsuccessful in many cases involving transition metals, particularly for common spectrometer geometries (30° to 60° ejection angle). Changing to grazing exit angle will increase the probability of observing small shifts for the outer substrate atoms by reducing the effective escape depth.

The effect of co-adsorption of CO on an underpotentially deposited (UPD) silver monolayer on a Pt(111) single crystal electrode in 0.05 M sulfuric acid is investigated for the first time by means of electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy (EC-STM). Pure electrochemical experiments suggest that the co-adsorption of CO onto Pt single crystal electrodes previously modified by a monolayer of Ag, forces Ag atoms of the first UPD monolayer into a second adlayer. The present EC-STM studies reveal the formation of a large-area Ag network after the co-adsorption of CO. The resulting Ag nanostructures formed on wide Pt(111) terraces are approximately 0.5 nm high and 10 nm wide. The desorption of the newly formed second Ag adlayer, the oxidation of CO and the desorption of Ag atoms from the first adlayer are monitored by EC-STM and simultaneously detected in the corresponding CVs in three different oxidation peaks. EC-STM images recorded afterwards show the unchanged Pt surface. The presence of Ag on the surface leads to a downward shift of the onset of oxygen adsorption on the Pt(111) surface.

The calormetically measured heats of adsorption of Cu, Ag, and Pb on MgO(100), previously measured in our group, are correlated with bulk properties of the metals and their sticking probabilities and film morphologies. The low-coverage heats of adsorption (when the metals are mainly in two-dimensional (2D) islands) are used to estimate metal-MgO(100) bond energies within a pairwise bond additivity model. These values correlate well with the observed initial sticking probabilities and saturation island densities of the metals. This supports a transient mobile precursor model for adsorption. The values also correlate with their bulk sublimation energies, which suggests that covalent metal-Mg bonding dominates the interaction at low coverage, probably due to very strong bonding at defects. The heats of adsorption integrated up to multilayer coverages provide the metal-MgO(100) adhesion energies and metal-MgO(100) bond energies for metals in 3D films. These values correlate with the sum of magnitudes of the metal's bulk sublimation energy plus the heat of formation of the bulk oxide of the metal per mole of metal atoms. This suggests that local chemical bonds, both metal-oxygen and covalent metal-Mg, dominate the interfacial bonding for 3D films.

The behavior of binary mixtures of linear symmetrical ethers and alkanes adsorbed to a graphite surface from the bulk liquid mixtures is described on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) data. Both the ethers and the alkanes are found to form solid monolayers when adsorbed from the liquid. In addition, the monolayer mixing behavior is addressed. The results indicate that there is good, essentially ideal, mixing in the monolayers for ethers and alkanes of the same overall chain length, where the chain length is equal to the total number of carbon and oxygen atoms in the molecule. However, a difference in chain length of more than one atom results in a variation of mixing behavior from nonideal mixing (for long pairs) to phase separation (for short pairs) on the graphite surface. Hence, we conclude that it is the relative chain lengths that control mixing behavior. The results are quantified using a regular solution model with a correction for preferential adsorption. The phase behavior of the mixed monolayers is also compared to the behavior of the bulk. Interestingly, we observe mixtures where the bulk and monolayer behavior are quite different, for example, phase separation in the bulk but essentially ideal mixing in the monolayer for mixtures of ethers and alkanes with the same chain lengths. At present, we attribute this mixing in the monolayer to dilution of the unfavorable ether oxygen-ether oxygen lone pair interactions by the coadsorbed alkanes. In addition, we find evidence for the preferential adsorption of the alkane over the ether. For example, heptane is preferentially adsorbed over dibutyl ether even though it contains two fewer atoms in the molecular chain. This contrasts with the preferential adsorption of alcohols over alkanes reported previously (Messe, L.; Perdigon, A.; Clarke, S. M.; Inaba, A.; Arnold, T. Langmuir 2005, 21, 5085-5093).

The adsorption and segregation of carbon or sulfur on Ni single crystal surfaces have been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Different adsorbate(segregate)-induced surface modifications have been detected in dependence on the original Ni surface orientation and the kind of nonmetal atoms: i) Adsorption of carbon from ethylene on Ni(111) at 6.7×10–4 Pa and 1000K leads to the epitaxial growth of a graphitic carbon monolayer which exhibits the structure of the hexagonal basal plane of graphite. However, as is found for highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), only three of six carbon atoms of the (0001) graphite plane are imaged by STM. In contrast, on Ni(771) at 663 to 1000 K carbon islands have been formed but no graphite monolayer formation is detected. This behavior can be understood by considering the aspects that no large-area epitaxy between the graphite basal plane and the Ni(110) terraces exists and that the surface carbon activity was too low to initiate substrate restructuring. ii) Segregation of sulfur (from the Ni bulk containing 5 to 7 ppm S) on Ni(110) at 1043K and s0.4 ML initiates the growth of sulfur islands which show a c(2×2)-S overlayer structure, whereas on Ni(111) at 823K and s0.2 ML (average value) a reconstructed surface phase is forming which can be described as an adsorbed two-dimensional sulfide Ni2S.

The adsorption of isolated alkali metal atoms (Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) on defect-free sur-face of MgO(001) has been systemically investigated with density functional theory using a pseudopotential plane-wave approach. The adsorption energy calculated is about -0.72 eV for the lithium on top of the surface O site and about one third of this value for the other alkali metals. The relatively strong interaction of Li with the surface O can be explained by a more covalent bonding involved, evidenced by results of both the projected density of states and the charge density difference. The bonding mechanism is discussed in detail for all alkali metals.

We present a systematic study of metal adatom adsorption on graphene by ab initio calculations. The calculations cover alkali metals, sp-simple metals, 3d and group 10 transition metals, noble metals, as well as rare earth metals. The correlation between the adatom adsorption properties and the growth morphology of the metals on graphene is also investigated. We show that the growth morphology is related to the ratio of the metal adsorption energy to its bulk cohesive energy (E(a)/E(c)) and the diffusion barrier (ΔE) of the metal adatom on graphene. Charge transfer, electric dipole and magnetic moments, and graphene lattice distortion induced by metal adsorption would also affect the growth morphologies of the metal islands. We also show that most of the metal nanostructures on graphene would be thermally stable against coarsening.

Different amounts of Pt atoms were deposited onto the surface of Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon black by hydroquinone reduction method in anhydrous ethanol. Here, we surveyed electrochemical probing of surface compositions of Pd–Pt surface alloys. They were calculated from hydrogen desorption, carbon monoxide adlayer oxidation, and reduced carbon dioxide oxidation charges. The surface composition of Pt drastically increased up to Pt[0.3]/Pd/C (23.1 at.% of Pt) and then approached that of pure Pt with the moderate rate of increase.

This paper presents a detailed study of a water adlayer adsorbed on Pt(111) and Rh(111) surfaces using periodic density functional theory methods. The interaction between the metal surface and the water molecules is assessed from molecular dynamics simulation data and single point electronic structure calculations of selected configurations. It is argued that the electron bands around the Fermi level of the metal substrate extend over the water adlayer. As a consequence in the presence of the water layer the surface as a whole still maintains its metallic conductivity-a result of a crucial importance for understanding the process of electron transfer through the water/metal interface and electrochemical reactions in particular. Our results also indicate that there exists a weak bond between the hydrogen of the water and the Rh metal atoms as opposed to the widespread (classical) models based on purely repulsive interaction. This suggests that the commonly used classical interactions potentials adopted for large scale molecular dynamics simulations of water/metal interfaces may need revision. Two adsorption models of water on transition metals with the OH bonds pointing towards or away of the surface are also examined. It is shown that due to the very close values of their adsorption energies one should consider the real structure of water on the surface as a mixture of these simple "up" and "down" models. A model for the structure of the adsorbed water layer on Rh(111) is proposed in terms of statistical averages from molecular dynamics simulations.

A comprehensive study has been conducted to compare the adsorptions of alkali metals (including Li, Na, and K) on the basal plane of graphite by using molecular orbital theory calculations. All three metal atoms prefer to be adsorbed on the "middle hollow site" above a hexagonal aromatic ring. A novel phenomenon was observed, that is, Na, instead of Li or K, is the weakest among the three types of metal atoms in adsorption. The reason is that the SOMO (single occupied molecular orbital) of the Na atom is exactly at the middle point between the HOMO and the LUMO of the graphite layer in energy level. As a result, the SOMO of Na cannot form a stable interaction with either the HOMO or the LUMO of the graphite. On the other hand, the SOMO of Li and K can form a relatively stable interaction with either the HOMO or the LUMO of graphite. Why Li has a relatively stronger adsorption than K on graphite has also been interpreted on the basis of their molecular-orbital energy levels.

The adsorption of silver and gold atoms, and M2, M6, and M13 (M=Ag or Au) clusters on the (0001) graphite surface has been investigated computationally using the density functional theory (DFT) with periodic boundary conditions and plane wave basis functions. The surface has been modeled as a single carbon sheet. The role of dispersion forces has been studied with an empirical classical model. The results show that the clusters avoid hollow sites on the graphite surface, and that the metal atoms favor atop and bond sites. Large structural changes are observed in octahedral M6 and icosahedral M13 clusters on the graphite surface when compared with gas-phase geometries. The results also indicate that if accurate results are required, the dispersion forces between metal and carbon atoms should be included in the studied systems.

The coverage dependence of oxygen adsorption energies on the fcc(111) surfaces of seven different transition metals (Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt, Cu, Au, and Ag) is demonstrated through density functional theory calculations on 20 configurations ranging from one to five adsorption sites and coverages up to 1 ML. Atom projected densities of states are used to demonstrate that the d-band mediated adsorption mechanism is responsible for the coverage dependence of the adsorption energies. This common bonding mechanism results in a linear correlation that relates the adsorption energies of each adsorbate configuration across different metal surfaces to each other. The slope of this correlation is shown to be related to the characteristics of the valence d-orbitals and band structure of the surface metal atoms. Additionally, it is shown that geometric similarity of the configurations is essential to observe the configurational correlations.

To obtain the surface stress changes deltasigma due to the adsorption of metal monolayers onto metallic surfaces, a new model derived from thermodynamic considerations is presented. Such a model is based on continuum Monte Carlo simulations with embedded atom method potentials in the canonical ensemble, and it is extended to consider the behavior on different islands adsorbed onto (111) substrate surfaces. Homoepitaxial and heteroepitaxial systems are studied. Pseudomorphic growth is not observed for small metal islands with considerable positive misfit with the substrate. Instead, the islands become compressed upon increase of their size. A simple model is proposed to interpolate between the misfits of atoms in small islands and the pseudomorphic behavior of the monolayer.

The adsorption of water (D(2)O) molecules on Rh(111) at 20 K was investigated using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). At the initial stage of adsorption, water molecules exist as monomers on Rh(111). With increasing water coverage, monomers aggregate into dimers, larger clusters (n = 3-6), and two-dimensional (2D) islands. Further exposure of water molecules leads to the formation of three-dimensional (3D) water islands and finally to a bulk amorphous ice layer. Upon heating, the monomer and dimer species thermally migrate on the surface and aggregate to form larger clusters and 2D islands. Based on the temperature dependence of OD stretching peaks, we succeeded in distinguishing water molecules inside 2D islands from those at the edge of 2D islands. From the comparison with the previous vibrational spectra of water clusters on other metal surfaces, we conclude that the number of water molecules at the edge of 2D islands is comparable with that of water molecules inside 2D islands on the Rh(111) surface at 20 K. This indicates that the surface migration of water molecules on Rh(111) is hindered as compared with the cases on Pt(111) and Ni(111) and thus the size of 2D islands on Rh(111) is relatively small.

The decomposition of ethene on the Pd(111) surface was studied at effective pressures in the 10(-8) to 10(-7) mbar range and at sample temperatures between 300 and 700 K, using an effusive capillary array beam doser for directional adsorption, LEED, AES, temperature programmed reaction, and TDS. In the temperature range of 350-440 K increasingly stronger dehydrogenation of the ethene molecule is observed. Whereas at 350 K an ethylidyne adlayer is still present after adsorption, already at temperatures around 440 K complete coverage of the surface by carbon is attained, while the bulk still retains the properties of pure Pd. Beyond 440 K a steady-state surface C coverage is established, which decreases with temperature and is determined by detailed balancing between the ethene gas-phase adsorption rate and the migration rate of carbon into the Pd bulk. This process gives rise to the formation of a "partially carbon-covered Pd(x)C(y) surface". Above 540 K the surface-bulk diffusion of adsorbed carbon becomes fast, and in the UHV experiment the ethene adsorption rate becomes limited by the ethene gas-phase supply. The carbon bulk migration rate and the steady-state carbon surface coverage were determined as a function of the sample temperature and the ethene flux. An activation energy of 107 kJ mol(-1) for the process of C diffusion from surface adsorption sites into the subsurface region was derived in the temperature range of 400-650 K by modeling the C surface coverage as a function of temperature on the basis of steady-state reaction kinetics, assuming a first-order process for C surface-subsurface diffusion and a second-order process for C(ads) formation by dissociative C2H4 adsorption.
