A three-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been developed for turbulent flows with free surface. In the horizontal xy-plane, a boundary-fitted curvilinear co-ordinate system is adopted, while in the vertical direction, a σ-co-ordinate transformation is used to represent the free surface and bed topography or lower boundary. Using the finite volume method, the convection terms are discretized using Roe's second-order-accurate scheme. The governing equations are solved in a collocated grid system by a fractional three-step implicit algorithm that has been developed to handle the velocity–pressure–depth coupling problem of free surface incompressible fluid flows. The present study is the extension of previous work to three-dimensional turbulent flows. The model has been applied to three test cases. Comparison with available data shows that the model developed is successful, and is valuable to engineering application. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The finite‐volume methods normally utilize either simple or complicated mathematical expressions to interpolate the fluxes at the cell faces of their unstructured volumes. Alternatively, we benefit from the advantages of both finite‐volume and finite‐element methods and estimate the advection terms on the cell faces using an inclusive pressure‐weighted upwinding scheme extended on unstructured grids. The present pressure‐based method treats the steady and unsteady flows on a collocated grid arrangement. However, to avoid a non‐physical spurious pressure field pattern, two mass flux per volume expressions are derived at the cell interfaces. The dual advantages of using an unstructured‐based discretization and a pressure‐weighted upwinding scheme result in obtaining high accurate solutions with noticeable progress in the performance of the primitive method extended on the structured grids. The accuracy and performance of the extended formulations are demonstrated by solving different standard and benchmark problems. The results show that there are excellent agreements with both benchmark and analytical solutions as well as experimental data. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper reports on the implementation and testing, within a full non‐linear multi‐grid environment, of a new pressure‐based algorithm for the prediction of multi‐fluid flow at all speeds. The algorithm is part of the mass conservation‐based algorithms (MCBA) group in which the pressure correction equation is derived from overall mass conservation. The performance of the new method is assessed by solving a series of two‐dimensional two‐fluid flow test problems varying from turbulent low Mach number to supersonic flows, and from very low to high fluid density ratios. Solutions are generated for several grid sizes using the single grid (SG), the prolongation grid (PG), and the full non‐linear multi‐grid (FMG) methods. The main outcomes of this study are: (i) a clear demonstration of the ability of the FMG method to tackle the added non‐linearity of multi‐fluid flows, which is manifested through the performance jump observed when using the non‐linear multi‐grid approach as compared to the SG and PG methods; (ii) the extension of the FMG method to predict turbulent multi‐fluid flows at all speeds. The convergence history plots and CPU‐times presented indicate that the FMG method is far more efficient than the PG method and accelerates the convergence rate over the SG method, for the problems solved and the grids used, by a factor reaching a value as high as 15. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology of using a two‐step split‐operator approach for solving the shallow water flow equations in terms of an orthogonal curvilinear co‐ordinate system. This approach is in fact one kind of the so‐called fractional step method that has been popularly used for computations of dynamic flow. By following that the momentum equations are decomposed into two portions, the computation procedure involves two steps. The first step (dispersion step) is to compute the provisional velocity in the momentum equation without the pressure gradient. The second step (propagation step) is to correct the provisional velocity by considering a divergence‐free velocity field, including the effect of the pressure gradient. This newly proposed method, other than the conventional split‐operator methods, such as the projection method, considers the effects of pressure gradient and bed friction in the second step. The advantage of this treatment is that it increases flexibility, efficiency and applicability of numerical simulation for various hydraulic problems. Four cases, including back‐water flow, reverse flow, circular basin flow and unsteady flow, have been demonstrated to show the accuracy and practical application of the method. The effect of wavelength and relative velocity on the disturbed interface of two‐phase stratified regime is modeled and discussed. To analyze the stability, a small perturbation is imposed on the interface. Growth or decline of the disturbed wave, relative velocity, and surface tension with respect to time will be discussed numerically. Newly developed scheme applied to a two‐dimensional flow field and the governing Navier–Stokes equations in laminar regime are solved. Finite volume method together with non‐staggered curvilinear grid is a very effective approach to capture interface shape with time. Because of the interface shape, for any time advancement, a new grid is performed separately on each stratified field, liquid, and gas regime. The results are compared with the analytical characteristics method and one‐dimensional modeling. This comparison shows that solving the momentum equation including viscosity term leads to physically more realistic results. In addition, the newly developed method is capable of predicting two‐phase stratified flow behavior more precisely than one‐dimensional modeling. It was perceived that the surface tension has an inevitable role in dissipation of interface instability and convergence of the two‐phase flow model. In this paper, a Galerkin weighted residual finite element numerical solution method, with velocity material time derivative discretisation, is applied to solve for a classical fluid mechanics system of partial differential equations modelling two‐dimensional stationary incompressible Newtonian fluid flow. Classical examples of driven cavity laminar flow and laminar flow past a cylinder are presented. Numerical results are compared with data found in the literature. A three‐dimensional numerical model is presented for the simulation of unsteady non‐hydrostatic shallow water flows on unstructured grids using the finite volume method. The free surface variations are modeled by a characteristics‐based scheme, which simulates sub‐critical and super‐critical flows. Three‐dimensional velocity components are considered in a collocated arrangement with a σ‐coordinate system. A special treatment of the pressure term is developed to avoid the water surface oscillations. Convective and diffusive terms are approximated explicitly, and an implicit discretization is used for the pressure term to ensure exact mass conservation. The unstructured grid in the horizontal direction and the σ coordinate in the vertical direction facilitate the use of the model in complicated geometries. Solution of the non‐hydrostatic equations enables the model to simulate short‐period waves and vertically circulating flows. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the CLEAR (coupled and linked equations algorithm revised) algorithm is extended to non‐orthogonal curvilinear collocated grids. The CLEAR algorithm does not introduce pressure correction in order to obtain an incompressible flow field which satisfies the mass conservation law. Rather, it improves the intermediate velocity by solving an improved pressure equation to make the algorithm fully implicit since there is no term omitted in the derivation process. In the extension of CLEAR algorithm from a staggered grid system in Cartesian coordinates to collocated grids in non‐orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, three important issues are appropriately treated so that the extended CLEAR can lead to a unique solution without oscillation of pressure field and with high robustness. These three issues are (1) solution independency on the under‐relaxation factor; (2) strong coupling between velocity and pressure; and (3) treatment of the cross pressure gradient terms. The flow and heat transfer problems in a rectangular enclosure with an internal eccentric circle and the flow in a lid‐driven inclined cavity are computed by using the extended CLEAR. The results show that the extended CLEAR can guarantee the solution independency on the under‐relaxation factor, the smoothness of pressure profile even at very small under‐relaxation factor and good robustness which leads to a converged solution for the small inclined angle of 5° only with 5‐point computational molecule while the extended SIMPLE‐series algorithm usually can get a converged solution for the inclined angle larger than 30° under the same condition. A numerical model for solving the 2D shallow water equations is proposed herewith. This model is based on a finite volume technique in a generalized co‐ordinate system, coupled with a semi‐implicit splitting algorithm in which a Helmholtz equation is used for the surface elevation. Several benchmark problems have proven the good accuracy of this method in complex geometries. Nevertheless, several numerical perturbations were noted in the surface elevation. After finding the origin, a new numerical technique is suggested, to avoid these perturbations. Several severe tests are proposed to validate this technique. A depth‐averaged two‐dimensional model has been developed in the curvilinear co‐ordinate system for free‐surface flow problems. The non‐linear convective terms of the momentum equations are discretized based on the explicit–finite–analytic method with second‐order accuracy in space and first‐order accuracy in time. The other terms of the momentum equations, as well as the mass conservation equation, are discretized by the finite difference method. The discretized governing equations are solved in turn, and iteration in each time step is adopted to guarantee the numerical convergence. The new model has been applied to various flow situations, even for the cases with the presence of sub‐critical and supercritical flows simultaneously or sequentially. Comparisons between the numerical results and the experimental data show that the proposed model is robust with satisfactory accuracy. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We discuss the application of a finite volume method to morphodynamic models on unstructured triangular meshes. The model is based on coupling the shallow water equations for the hydrodynamics with a sediment transport equation for the morphodynamics. The finite volume method is formulated for the quasi‐steady approach and the coupled approach. In the first approach, the steady hydrodynamic state is calculated first and the corresponding water velocity is used in the sediment transport equation to be solved subsequently. The second approach solves the coupled hydrodynamics and sediment transport system within the same time step. The gradient fluxes are discretized using a modified Roe's scheme incorporating the sign of the Jacobian matrix in the morphodynamic system. A well‐balanced discretization is used for the treatment of source terms. We also describe an adaptive procedure in the finite volume method by monitoring the bed–load in the computational domain during its transport process. The method uses unstructured meshes, incorporates upwinded numerical fluxes and slope limiters to provide sharp resolution of steep bed gradients that may form in the approximate solution. Numerical results are shown for a test problem in the evolution of an initially hump‐shaped bed in a squared channel. For the considered morphodynamical regimes, the obtained results point out that the coupled approach performs better than the quasi‐steady approach only when the bed–load rapidly interacts with the hydrodynamics. Consideration is given in this paper to the numerical solution of the transient two‐phase flow in rigid pipelines. The governing equations for such flows are two coupled, non‐linear, hyperbolic, partial differential equations with pressure dependent coefficients. The fluid pressure and velocity are considered as two principle dependent variables. The fluid is a homogeneous gas–liquid mixture for which the density is defined by an expression averaging the two‐component densities where a polytropic process of the gaseous phase is admitted. Instead of the void fraction, which varies with the pressure, the gas–fluid mass ratio (or the quality) is assumed to be constant, and is used in the mathematical formulation. The problem has been solved by the method of non‐linear characteristics and the finite difference conservative scheme. To verify their validity, the computed results of the two numerical techniques are compared for different values of the quality, in the case where the liquid compressibility and the pipe wall elasticity are neglected. A high‐resolution numerical scheme based on the MUSCL–Hancock approach is developed to solve unsteady compressible two‐phase dilute viscous flow. Numerical considerations for the development of the scheme are provided. Several solvers for the Godunov fluxes are tested and the results lead to the choice of an exact Riemann solver adapted for both gaseous and dispersed phases. The accuracy of the scheme is proven step by step through specific test cases. These simulations are for one‐phase viscous flows over a flat plate in subsonic and supersonic regimes, unsteady flows in a low‐pressure shock tube, two‐phase dilute viscous flows over a flat plate and, finally, two‐phase unsteady viscous flows in a shock tube. The results are compared with well‐established analytical and numerical solutions and very good agreement is achieved. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An implicit finite volume model in sigma coordinate system is developed to simulate two‐dimensional (2D) vertical free surface flows, deploying a non‐hydrostatic pressure distribution. The algorithm is based on a projection method which solves the complete 2D Navier–Stokes equations in two steps. First the pressure term in the momentum equations is excluded and the resultant advection–diffusion equations are solved. In the second step the continuity and the momentum equation with only the pressure terms are solved to give a block tri‐diagonal system of equation with pressure as the unknown. This system can be solved by a direct matrix solver without iteration. A new implicit treatment of non‐hydrostatic pressure, similar to the lower layers is applied to the top layer which makes the model free of any hydrostatic pressure assumption all through the water column. This treatment enables the model to evaluate both free surface elevation and wave celerity more accurately. A series of numerical tests including free‐surface flows with significant vertical accelerations and nonlinear behaviour in shoaling zone are performed. Comparison between numerical results, analytical solutions and experimental data demonstrates a satisfactory performance. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of infiltration processes on stratified porous media. The study is carried out to examine the performance of a finite volume method on problems with discontinuous solutions due to the transmission conditions in the interfaces. To discretize the problem, a curvilinear co‐ordinate system is used. This permits matching the interface with the boundary of the control volumes that interchange fluxes between layers. The use of the multigrid algorithm for the resulting systems of equations allows problems involving a large number of nodes with low computational cost to be solved. Finally, some numerical experiments, which show the capillary barrier behaviour depending on the material used for the different layers and the geometric design of the interface, are presented. The paper presents an efficient finite volume method for unstructured grids with rotating sliding parts composed of arbitrary polyhedral elements for both single‐ and two‐phase flows. Mathematical model used in computations is based on the ensemble averaged conservation equations. These equations are solved for each phase and in case of single‐phase flow reduce to the transient Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (TRANS) equations. Transient flow induced by rotating impellers is thus resolved in time. The use of unstructured grids allows an easy and flexible meshing for the entire flow domain. Polyhedral cell volumes are created on the arbitrary mesh interface placed between rotating and static parts. Cells within the rotating parts move each time step and the new faces are created on the arbitrary interfaces only, while the rest of the domain remain ‘topologically’ unchanged. Implicit discretization scheme allows a wide range of time‐step sizes, which further reduce the computational effort. Special attention is given to the interpolation practices used for the reconstruction of the face quantities. Mass fluxes are recalculated at the beginning of each time step by using an interpolation scheme, which enhances the coupling between the pressure and velocity fields. The model has been implemented into the commercially available CFD code AVL SWIFT (AVL AST, SWIFT Manual 3.1, AVL List GmbH, Graz, Austria, 2002). Single‐phase flow in a mixing vessel stirred by a six‐bladed Rushton‐type turbine and two‐phase flow in aerated stirred vessel with the four‐blade Rushton impeller are simulated. The results are compared with the available experimental data, and good agreement is observed. The proposed algorithm is proved to be both stable and accurate for single‐phase as well as for the two‐phase flows calculations. Copyright 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, the depth‐averaged transport equations are written in a new way so that it is possible to solve the transport equations for very small water depths. Variables are interpolated into the cell face with two different schemes and, the schemes are compared in terms of computational cost and accuracy. The bed source terms are computed using two different assumptions. The effect of these assumptions on numerical simulations is then investigated. Solutions of transport equations on different types of unstructured triangular grids are compared and, an appropriate choice of grid is suggested. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Current existing main nuclear thermal‐hydraulics (T‐H) system analysis codes, such as RALAP5, TRACE, and CATHARE, play a crucial role in the nuclear engineering field for the design and safety analysis of nuclear reactor systems. However, two‐fluid model used in these T‐H system analysis codes is ill posed, easily leading to numerical oscillations, and the classical first‐order methods for temporal and special discretization are widely employed for numerical simulations, yielding excessive numerical diffusion. Two‐fluid seven‐equation two‐pressure model is of particular interest due to the inherent well‐posed advantage. Moreover, high‐order accuracy schemes have also attracted great attention to overcome the challenge of serious numerical diffusion induced by low‐order time and space schemes for accurately simulating nuclear T‐H problems. In this paper, the semi‐implicit solution algorithm with high‐order accuracy in space and time is developed for this well‐posed two‐fluid model and the robustness and accuracy are verified and assessed against several important two‐phase flow benchmark tests in the nuclear engineering T‐H field, which include two linear advection problems, the oscillation problem of the liquid column, the Ransom water faucet problem, the reversed water faucet problem, and the two‐phase shock tube problem. The following conclusions are achieved. (1) The proposed semi‐implicit solution algorithm is robust in solving two‐phase flows, even for fast transients and discontinuous solutions. (2) High‐order schemes in both time and space could prevent excessive numerical diffusion effectively and the numerical simulation results are more accurate than those of first‐order time and space schemes, which demonstrates the advantage of using high‐order schemes.  相似文献

It is crucial to deal with the grid non‐orthogonality effectively in solving the flow in complex geometries, especially at high Reynolds numbers. In this study, the newly proposed Coupled and Linked Equations Algorithm Revised‐ER (CLEARER) algorithm is adopted to solve this problem successfully. In CLEARER algorithm the second relaxation factor is introduced in constructing the contravariant interface velocities, by setting it to a low value. CLEARER algorithm can overcome the severe grid non‐orthogonality and non‐linearity of equations effectively. After the numerical results with CLEARER are validated with the benchmark solutions, this algorithm is used to solve the lid‐driven flow in inclined cavity with inclination angles varying from 10 to 170°, and Reynolds numbers varying from 5000 to 15 000. The streamlines and the centerline velocity distributions are provided in detail for all cases, which may offer some guidance for the study in this area.
