This paper presents a numerical study of external electrical and magnetic effects on the formation of longitudinal vortices in natural convection flow over a heated horizontal plate. The criterion on the position marking on the onset of longitudinal vortices is defined in the present paper. The onset position characterized by the Grashof number depends on the Prandtl number, the wave number, the electric field parameter, and the magnetic field parameter. The flow is found more stable as the value of the magnetic field parameter increases. Moreover, the stabilizing effect is also found on the flow when the positive electric field parameter Ec is applied. The results of the present numerical prediction show reasonable agreement with the experimental data with zero magnetic field and electric field parameters in literature.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of the effect of rotation on the formation of longitudinal vortices in mixed convection flow over a flat plate. The criterion on the position of marking the onset of longitudinal vortices is defined in this paper. The onset position characterized by the Goertler number G δ depends on the Grashof number, the rotation number Ro, the Prandtl number Pr and the wave number. The results show that negative rotation stabilizes the boundary layer flow on the surface. On the contrary, positive rotation destabilizes the flow. The numerical data are compared with the experimental results.  相似文献

Effect of magnetic field on the formation of longitudinal vortices in mixed convection flow over a rotating heated flat plate is presented. The onset position is characterized by the Grashof number, the rotational number, the Prandtl number, the Eckert number, the magnetic field parameter, and the wave number. Negative rotation (clockwise) and external magnetic field stabilize the boundary layer flow. On the contrary, positive rotation (anti-clockwise), the Eckert number, and the Prandtl number destabilize the flow. The numerical data show agreement with the experimental data with the case of zero Hartmann number in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical study of the electrical and magnetic fields on thermal instability in a boundary layer. The criterion on the position marking on the onset of longitudinal vortices is defined in the present paper. The results show that the onset position characterized by the Grashof number depends on the Prandtl number, the Reynolds number, the wave number, the electric field parameter, and the Hartmann number. The flow becomes more stable as the magnetic field increases. However, the destabilizing effect is found on the flow when the negative electric field parameter is applied. The results of the present numerical prediction show reasonable agreement with the experimental data in the case of zero Hartmann number and zero electric field parameter in the literature. Effect of ion‐slip current on the thermal instability in a boundary layer is studied. The criterion on the position marking the onset of longitudinal vortices is defined in the present paper. The results show that the onset position characterized by the Grashof number depends on the Prandtl number, the Reynolds number, the wave number, the Hall parameter, the ion‐slip parameter, and the Hartmann number. The flow becomes more stable as the magnetic field increases. However, the destabilizing effects are found on the flow when the Hall and ion‐slip currents are presented. The results of the present numerical prediction show reasonable agreement with the experimental data in the case of zero Hartmann number, ion‐slip parameter, and Hall parameter in the open literature. This paper presents a numerical prediction of the formation of Goertler vortices on a concave surface with suction and blowing. Suction stabilizes the boundary layer flow on the surface, whereas blowing destabilizes the flow. The criterion on the position marking the onset of Goertler vortices is defined in the present paper. For facilitating the numerical study, the computation is carried out in the transformed x–η plane. The results show that the onset position characterized by the Goertler number depends on the local suction/blowing parameter, the Prandtl number and the wavenumber. The value of the critical Goertler number increases with the increase in suction, while the value of the Goertler number decreases with the increase in blowing. Both the experimental and the numerical data can be correlated by Gθ*=10.2(a′θ)*3/2 without suction and blowing and by a simple relation G*x=(G*x)γ=0 e−γ with suction and blowing. The obtained critical Goertler number and wavenumber are in good agreement with the previous experimental data. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical prediction of the formation of Goertler vortices on a curved surface with effect of rotation. The criterion of flow visualization marking the onset position of Goertler vortices is employed in the present paper. For facilitating the numerical study, the computation is carried out in the transformed x and ηplane. The results show that the onset position characterized by the Goertler number, depends on the rotation number Ro, the Prandtl number and the wave number. The value of critical Goertler number increases with the increase in negative rotation, while the value of Goertler number decreases with the increase in positive rotation on a concave surface. On the contrary, the value of critical Goertler number decreases with the increase in negative rotation on a convex surface. The obtained critical Goertler number and wave number are compared with the previous theoretical and experimental data. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The combined effect of rotation and magnetic field is investigated for the axisymmetric flow due to the motion of a sphere in an inviscid, incompressible electrically conducting fluid having uniform rotation far upstream. The steady-state linearized equations contain a single parameter α=1/2βR m, β being the magnetic pressure number and R m the magnetic Reynolds number. The complete solution for the flow field and magnetic field is obtained and the distribution of vorticity and current density is found. The induced vorticity is O(α4) and the current density is O(R m) on the sphere.  相似文献

In this experimental study a thorough analysis of the steady and unsteady flow field in a realistic transparent silicone lung model of the first bifurcation of the upper human airways will be presented. To determine the temporal evolution of the flow time-resolved particle-image velocimetry recordings were performed for a Womersley number range 3.3 ≤ α ≤ 5.8 and Reynolds numbers of Re D = 1,050, 1,400, and 2,100. The results evidence a highly three-dimensional and asymmetric character of the velocity field in the upper human airways, in which the influence of the asymmetric geometry of the realistic lung model plays a significant role for the development of the flow field in the respiratory system. At steady inspiration, the flow shows independent of the Reynolds number a large zone with embedded counter-rotating vortices in the left bronchia ensuring a continuous streamwise transport into the lung. At unsteady flow the critical Reynolds number, which describes the onset of vortices in the first bifurcation, is increased at higher Womersley number and decreased at higher Reynolds number. At expiration the unsteady and steady flows are almost alike.  相似文献

The simultaneous effect of local thermal nonequilibrium (LTNE) and magnetic field dependent (MFD) viscosity on thermal convective instability in a horizontal ferrofluid saturated Brinkman porous layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is studied analytically. The results indicate that the onset of Brinkman ferroconvection is delayed with increasing MFD viscosity parameter but the critical wave number is found to be independent of this parameter. When compared to the simultaneous presence of buoyancy and magnetic forces, it is observed that the onset of Brinkman ferroconvection is delayed more when the magnetic forces alone are present. Asymptotic solutions for both small and large values of scaled inter-phase heat transfer coefficient H t are compared with those computed numerically and good agreement is found between them. Besides, the influence of magnetic and LTNE parameters on the stability characteristics of the system is also discussed. The available results in the literature are recovered as particular cases from the present study.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with a liquid metal flow driven by a rotating magnetic field inside a stationary cylinder. We consider especially the secondary meridional flow during the time when the fluid spins up from rest. The developing flow is investigated experimentally and by direct numerical simulations. The vertical profiles of the axial velocity are measured by means of the ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. Evolving instabilities in the form of Taylor–G?rtler vortices have been observed just above the instability threshold (Ta ≥ 1.5· Ta cr). The rotational symmetry may survive over a distinct time even if a first Taylor–G?rtler vortex pair has been formed as closed rings along the cylinder perimeter. The transition to a three-dimensional flow in the side layers results from the advection or a precession and splitting of the Taylor–G?rtler vortex rings. The predictable behaviour of the Taylor–G?rtler vortices disappears with increasing magnetic field strength. The numerical simulations agree very well with the flow measurements.  相似文献

Closed-form solutions are derived for the steady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) viscous flow in a parallel plate channel system with perfectly conducting walls in a rotating frame of reference, in the presence of Hall currents, heat transfer and a transverse uniform magnetic field. A mathematical analysis is described to evaluate the velocity, induced magnetic field and mass flow rate distributions, for a wide range of the governing parameters. Asymptotic behavior of the solution is analyzed for large M 2 (Hartmann number squared) and K 2 (rotation parameter). The heat transfer aspect is considered also with Joule and viscous heating effects present. Boundary layers arise close to the channel walls for large K 2, i.e. strong rotation of the channel. For slowly rotating systems (small K 2), Hall current parameter (m) reduces primary mass flow rate (Q x /R ρ v). Heat transfer rate at the upper plate (d θ/d η) η=1 decreases, while at the lower plate (d θ/d η) η=−1 increases, with increase in either K 2 or m. For constant values of the rotation parameter, K 2, heat transfer rate at both plates exhibits an oscillatory pattern with an increase in Hall current parameter, m. The response of the primary and secondary velocity components and also the primary and secondary induced magnetic field components to the control parameters is also studied graphically. Applications of the study arise in rotating MHD induction machine energy generators, planetary and solar plasma fluid dynamics systems, magnetic field control of materials processing systems, hybrid magnetic propulsion systems for space travel etc.  相似文献

In this paper, a linear stability analysis is presented to trace the time evolution of an infinitesimal, two-dimensional disturbance imposed on the base flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a channel filled with a saturated porous medium under the influence of a transversely imposed magnetic field. An eigenvalue problem is obtained and solved numerically using the Chebyshev collocation spectral method. The critical Reynolds number Re c, the critical wave number α c and the critical wave speed c c are obtained for a wide range of the porous medium shape factor parameter S and Hartmann number H. It is found that an increase in the magnetic field intensity and a decrease in porous medium permeability have a stabilizing effect on the fluid flow.  相似文献

A linear stability analysis is used to study the conditions marking the onset of secondary flow in the form of longitudinal vortices for plane Poiseuille flow of water in the thermal entrance region of a horizontal parallel-plate channel by a numerical method. The water temperature range under consideration is 0∼30°C and the maximum density effect at 4°C is of primary interest. The basic flow solution for temperature includes axial heat conduction effect and the entrance temperature is taken to be uniform at far upstream location jackie=−∞ to allow for the upstream heat penetration through thermal entrance jackie=0. Numerical results for critical Rayleigh number are obtained for Peclet numbers 1, 10, 50 and thermal condition parameters (λ 1, λ 2) in the range of −2.0≤λ 1≤−0.5 and −1.0≤λ 2≤1.4. The analysis is motivated by a desire to determine the free convection effect on freezing or thawing in channel flow of water.  相似文献

A new definition of coherent vortices in turbulence is proposed, where the vorticity equation reduces to a cyclostrophic balance. Afterward, we describe five fundamental vortex interactions, the sheet, the spiral, the pairing, the even longitudinal, and the odd longitudinal modes. Numerous examples of these interactions are provided from direct numerical or large-eddy simulations. The resulting vortices are responsible for the internal intermittent character of turbulence, with highly nongaussian tails for the probability density functions of vorticity, passive scalar, and low pressure. In a mixing layer, the combination of the odd longitudinal and the pairing modes (helical pairing) is inhibited by compressibility, above a convective Mach number of 0.7. When turbulence is submitted to a solid-body rotation, anticyclonic vortices of local Rossby number of the order of 1 transform into intense perpendicular Görtler-type alternate longitudinal vortices. The support of CCVR, CEA, CNRS, Dassault/CNES, DRET, LHF, and Région Rhône-Alpes is acknowledged. The effect of local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on the onset of thermomagnetic convection in a ferromagnetic fluid-saturated horizontal porous layer in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is investigated. A modified Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation is employed to describe the flow in the porous medium, and a two-field model is used for temperature representing the solid and fluid phases separately. It is found that both the critical Darcy–Rayleigh number and the corresponding wave number are modified by the LTNE effects. Asymptotic solutions for both small and large values of scaled interphase heat transfer coefficient H t are presented and compared with those computed numerically. An excellent agreement is obtained between the asymptotic and the numerical results. Besides, the influence of magnetic parameters on the instability of the system is also discussed. The available results in the literature are recovered as particular cases from the present study.  相似文献

Numerical experiments have been conducted to study the effect of magnetic Reynolds number on the steady, two‐dimensional, viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting flow around a circular cylinder. Besides usual Reynolds number Re, the flow is governed by the magnetic Reynolds number Rm and Alfvén number β. The flow and magnetic field are uniform and parallel at large distances from the cylinder. The pressure Poisson equation is solved to find the pressure fields in the entire flow region. The effects of the magnetic field and electrical conductivity on the recirculation bubble, drag coefficient, standing vortex and pressure are presented and discussed. For low interaction parameter (N<1), the suppression of the flow‐separation is nearly independent of the conductivity of the fluid, whereas for large interaction parameters, the conductivity of the fluid strongly influences the control of flow‐separation. The flow field of a channel rotating about the streamwise axis is analyzed experimentally and numerically. The current investigations were carried out at a bulk velocity based Reynolds number of Rem = 2850 and a friction velocity based Reynolds number of Reτ = 180, respectively. Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are compared with large-eddy simulation data to show earlier direct numerical simulation findings to generate too large a reverse flow region in the center region of the spanwise flow. The development of the mean spanwise velocity distribution and the influence of the rotation on the turbulent properties, i.e., the Reynolds stresses and the two-point correlations of the flow, are confirmed in both investigations. The rotation primarily influences those components of the Reynolds shear stresses, which contain the spanwise velocity component. The size of the correlation areas and thus the length scales of the flow generally grow in all three coordinate directions leading to longer structures. Furthermore, experimental results of the same channel flow at a significantly lower bulk Reynolds number of Rem, l = 665, i.e., a laminar flow in a non-rotating channel, are introduced. The experiments show the low Reynolds number flow to become turbulent under rotation and to develop the same characteristics as the high Reynolds number flow.  相似文献

The flow of a Newtonian fluid and a Boger fluid through sudden square–square contractions was investigated experimentally aiming to characterize the flow and provide quantitative data for benchmarking in a complex three-dimensional flow. Visualizations of the flow patterns were undertaken using streak-line photography, detailed velocity field measurements were conducted using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and pressure drop measurements were performed in various geometries with different contraction ratios. For the Newtonian fluid, the experimental results are compared with numerical simulations performed using a finite volume method, and excellent agreement is found for the range of Reynolds number tested (Re2 ≤ 23). For the viscoelastic case, recirculations are still present upstream of the contraction but we also observe other complex flow patterns that are dependent on contraction ratio (CR) and Deborah number (De2) for the range of conditions studied: CR = 2.4, 4, 8, 12 and De2 ≤ 150. For low contraction ratios strong divergent flow is observed upstream of the contraction, whereas for high contraction ratios there is no upstream divergent flow, except in the vicinity of the re-entrant corner where a localized atypical divergent flow is observed. For all contraction ratios studied, at sufficiently high Deborah numbers, strong elastic vortex enhancement upstream of the contraction is observed, which leads to the onset of a periodic complex flow at higher flow rates. The vortices observed under steady flow are not closed, and fluid elasticity was found to modify the flow direction within the recirculations as compared to that found for Newtonian fluids. The entry pressure drop, quantified using a Couette correction, was found to increase with the Deborah number for the higher contraction ratios.
