Abstract The aim of this work is to show a better comprehension of the flow structure and thermal transfer in a rotor-stator system with a central opening in the stator and without an airflow imposed. The experimental technique uses infrared thermography to measure the surface temperatures of the rotor and the numerical solution of the steady-state heat equation to determine the local heat transfer coefficients. Analysis of the flow structure between the rotor and the stator is conducted by PIV. Tests are carried out for rotational Reynolds numbers ranging from 5.87×104 to 1.4×106 and for gap ratios ranging from 0.01 to 0.17. Analysis of the experimental results has determined the influence of the rotational Reynolds number, the gap ratio and systems geometry on the flow structure, and the convective exchanges in the gap between the rotor and the stator. Some correlations expressing the local Nusselt number as a function of the rotational Reynolds number and the gap ratio are proposed.  相似文献

Three-dimensional turbulent forced convective heat transfer and flow characteristics, and the non-dimensional entropy generation number in a helical coiled tube subjected to uniform wall temperature are simulated using the k–ε standard turbulence model. A finite volume method is employed to solve the governing equations. The effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the average friction factor and Nusselt number are discussed. The results presented in this paper cover a Reynolds number range of 2 × 104 to 6 × 104, a pitch range of 0.1–0.2 and a curvature ratio range of 0.1–0.3. The results show that the coil pitch, curvature ratio and Reynolds number have different effects on the average friction factor and Nusselt number at different cross-sections. In addition, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a helical coiled tube with a larger curvature ratio for turbulent flow are different from that of smaller curvature ratio for laminar and turbulent flow in certain ways. Some new features that are not obtained in previous researches are revealed. Moreover, the effects of Reynolds number, curvature ratio, and coil pitch on the non-dimensional entropy generation number of turbulent forced convection in a helical coiled tube are also discussed.  相似文献

Turbulent heat transfer from a sudden expansion pipe subjected to an externally convective boundary condition is studied numerically using the proposed modified turbulence model. Both HYBRID and QUICK schemes are employed for comparison purposes. The calculated velocity distribution and turbulent kinetic energy show a significant improvement over the existing model solutions. The present results of center-line velocity, temperature distribution and Nusselt number under a limiting condition compare well with the available experimental data.  相似文献

Fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in a concentric annular duct is investigated for the first time by using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) with isoflux conditions imposed at both walls. The Reynolds number based on the half-width between inner and outer walls, δ=(r2-r1)/2, and the laminar maximum velocity is Reδ=3500. A Prandtl number Pr=0.71 and a radius ratio r*=0.1 were retained. The main objective of this work is to examine the effect of the heat flux density ratio, q*=q1/q2, on different thermal statistics (mean temperature profiles, root mean square (rms) of temperature fluctuations, turbulent heat fluxes, heat transfer, etc.). To validate the present DNS calculations, predictions of the flow and thermal fields with q*=1 are compared to results recently reported in the archival literature. A good agreement with available DNS data is shown. The effect of heat flux ratio q* on turbulent thermal statistics in annular duct with arbitrarily prescribed heat flux is discussed then. This investigation highlights that heat flux ratio has a marked influence on the thermal field. When q* varies from 0 to 0.01, the rms of temperature fluctuations and the turbulent heat fluxes are more intense near the outer wall while changes in q* from 1 to 100, lead to opposite trends.  相似文献

The analogue procedure which the authors have proposed2 is expanded to plane thermoelastic fields, with heat generation within the region or heat transfer from both surfaces of the thermoelastic field. A plate similar to the thermoelastic field is prepared and the plate-bending test is carried out with distributed loads over the plate and with a concentrated load on the inner flange. The strains are measured carefully for each bending test and these are combined to transform into the thermal stress of the original thermoelastic field. The results are compared with theoretical or numerical ones and good agreement is confirmed among them.  相似文献

Investigations into the characteristics of turbulent heat transfer and coherent flow structures in a plane-channel subjected to wall-normal system rotation are conducted using direct numerical simulation (DNS). In order to investigate the influence of system rotation on the temperature field, a wide range of rotation numbers are tested, with the flow pattern transitioning from being fully turbulent to being quasilaminar, and eventually, fully laminar. In response to the Coriolis force, secondary flows appear as large vortical structures, which interact intensely with the wall shear layers and have a significant impact on the distribution of turbulence kinetic energy (TKE), turbulence scalar energy (TSE), temperature statistics, and turbulent heat fluxes. The characteristic length scales of turbulence structures responsible for the transport of TSE are the largest at the quasilaminar state, which demands a very large computational domain in order to capture the two-dimensional spectra of temperature fluctuations. The effects of the Coriolis force on the turbulent transport processes of the temperature variance and turbulent heat fluxes are thoroughly examined in terms of their respective budget balances.  相似文献

The entropy generation and heat transfer characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) third-grade fluid flow through a vertical porous microchannel with a convective boundary condition are analyzed. Entropy generation due to flow of MHD non-Newtonian third-grade fluid within a microchannel and temperature-dependent viscosity is studied using the entropy generation rate and Vogel's model. The equations describing flow and heat transport along with boundary conditions are first made dimensionless using proper non-dimensional transformations and then solved numerically via the finite element method(FEM). An appropriate comparison is made with the previously published results in the literature as a limiting case of the considered problem. The comparison confirms excellent agreement. The effects of the Grashof number, the Hartmann number, the Biot number, the exponential space-and thermal-dependent heat source(ESHS/THS) parameters, and the viscous dissipation parameter on the temperature and velocity are studied and presented graphically. The entropy generation and the Bejan number are also calculated. From the comprehensive parametric study, it is recognized that the production of entropy can be improved with convective heating and viscous dissipation aspects. It is also found that the ESHS aspect dominates the THS aspect.  相似文献

In the present analysis, we consider the effect of radial magnetic field on the steady flow produced by the combined free and forced convection in an annulus between two coaxial vertical cylinders. A numerical solution of the problem is obtained by using Runge-Kutta-Merson method. For Rayleigh number Ra<0, that is, when the temperature of the pipes decreases as their height increases, the velocity increases with |Ra|. However, it reduces as the Hartmann number M increases. On the other hand, when Ra>0, there occurs back flow controlled by the effect of the magnetic field. Further, the influence of Rayleigh number and Hartmann number on the temperature is also discussed.Nomenclature c p specific heat at constant pressure - g acceleration due to gravity - H r applied magnetic field - H z induced magnetic field - p pressure - T temperature of the fluid - T 1, T 2 temperatures of the inner and outer cylinders at z=0 - U z velocity - coefficient of volume expansion - density - w reference density - coefficient of viscosity - e magnetic permeability - e electrical conductivity - thermal conductivity - m magnetic diffusivity  相似文献

Lattice Boltzmann direct numerical simulations of turbulent heat transfer over and inside anisotropic porous media are performed. This study considers turbulent plane channel flows whose bottom walls are made from the porous media at the bulk Reynolds number of 2900 with isothermal and conjugate heat transfer wall conditions. Four different porous walls are considered. They are walls with only the wall-normal permeability, with the wall-normal and spanwise permeabilities, with the wall-normal and streamwise permeabilities, and with the isotropic wall-normal, spanwise and streamwise permeabilities. The porosity of the porous walls ranges from 0.6 to 0.8. Discussions on the effects of the anisotropic permeability on turbulent thermal fields are carried out by the instantaneous flow visualizations and the statistical quantities. In particular, temperature fluctuations, turbulent and dispersion heat fluxes are examined both inside and outside the porous walls. Finally, the heat transfer performance is discussed considering the effects of the anisotropic permeability.  相似文献

Thermodynamic irreversibilities generated by the combustion process are evaluated and analyzed numerically. The numerical simulation is performed for a reference case study for which experimental data are available in the literature: diffusion flame properties in a common burner configuration are studied by the Fluent software with the standard k–ε turbulence model and two-step chemical reaction. The study quantifies the contribution of each mechanism to entropy generation, i.e., friction, heat conduction, species diffusion, and chemical reaction. The chemical reaction and heat conduction are found to be the major sources of entropy production. Preheating of air reduces thermodynamic irreversibilities within the combustor.  相似文献

In this paper, a direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer are studied in a square duct with an imposed temperature difference between the vertical walls and the perfectly insulated horizontal walls. The natural convection is considered on the cross section in the duct. The numerical scheme employs a time-splitting method to integrate the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The unsteady flow field was simulated at a Reynolds number of 400 based on the Mean friction velocity and the hydraulic diameter (Re m = 6200), while the Prandtl number (Pr) is assumed 0.71. Four different Grashof numbers (Gr = 104, 105, 106 and 107) are considered. The results show that the secondary flow and turbulent characteristics are not affected obviously at lower Grashof number (Gr ≤ 105) cases, while for the higher Grashof number cases, natural convection has an important effect, but the mean flow and mean temperature at the cross section are also affected strongly by Reynolds stresses. Compared with the laminar heat transfer at the same Grashof number, the intensity of the combined heat transfer is somewhat decreased.  相似文献

In this paper, a SIMPLE-like algorithm on co-located grid system has been developed. The ability to suppress the spurious pressure field is achieved via introducing the pressure difference between adjacent two grid points into the convection-diffusion finite difference scheme, and the interfacial velocity is obtained by simple linear interpolation. The differencing scheme, discretization of governing equations and solution procedure of the algorithm are described in detail. In order to check the validity of the algorithm, several test cases which have analytical or benchmark solutions are presented. Good agreements are obtained between the numerical and the corresponding analytical or benchmark solutions. The ability of the improved algorithm to suppress the spurious pressure field is demonstrated via a 3-D example. Received on 11 March 1997  相似文献

Interest in the use of supercomputers for the direct numerical calculation of turbulence prompts the development of efficient numerical techniques so that calculation at higher Reynolds numbers might be made. This paper presents an efficient pseudo-spectral technique, similar to but different from others that have recently appeared, for the calculation of momentum and heat transfer to a constant-property, turbulent fluid in a two-dimensional channel with walls at different, uniform temperature. The code uses no empiricism, although periodic boundary conditions are used for fluctuating quantities in the streamwise and spanwise directions. Calculations were made for a Prandtl number of 0·72 and Reynolds number based on friction velocity and channel half-height of 180 or 2800 based on channel half-height and average velocity. Calculations of mean velocity profile, turbulence intensities, skewness, flatness, Reynolds stress and eddy diffusivity of heat near a wall compare favourably with experimental results. Representative contour plots of the temperature field near the wall and of the spanwise and streamwise two-point velocity correlations are given. Deficiencies are that the calculation requires many hours on a fast computer with a large high-speed memory and that the grid size in each direction for appropriate resolution is approximately proportional to the square of the Reynolds number and to the Prandtl number raised to some power greater than one.  相似文献

The effect of rough surface topography on heat and momentum transfer is studied by direct numerical simulations of turbulent heat transfer over uniformly heated three-dimensional irregular rough surfaces, where the effective slope and skewness values are systematically varied while maintaining a fixed root-mean-square roughness. The friction Reynolds number is fixed at 450, and the temperature is treated as a passive scalar with a Prandtl number of unity. Both the skin friction coefficient and Stanton number are enhanced by the wall roughness. However, the Reynolds analogy factor for the rough surface is lower than that for the smooth surface. The semi-analytical expression for the Reynolds analogy factor suggests that the Reynolds analogy factor is related to the skin friction coefficient and the difference between the temperature and velocity roughness functions, and the Reynolds analogy factor for the present rough surfaces is found to be predicted solely based on the equivalent sand-grain roughness. This suggests that the relationship between the Reynolds analogy factor and the equivalent sand-grain roughness is not affected by the effective slope and skewness values. Analysis of the heat and momentum transfer mechanisms based on the spatial- and time-averaged equations suggests that two factors decrease the Reynolds analogy factor. One is the increased effective Prandtl number within the rough surface in which the momentum diffusivity due to the combined effects of turbulence and dispersion is larger than the corresponding thermal diffusivity. The other is the significant increase in the pressure drag force term above the mean roughness height.  相似文献

Some general invariance relations are obtained for the integral diffusion fluxes of the reactant on the surface of one or several reacting particles of arbitrary shape in Stokes flow of a viscous incompressible fluid around the particles at large Péclet numbers. Convective boiling of HCFC123 and FC72 in 0.19, 0.3 and 0.51 mm ID tubes is investigated. The experimental setup as well as the data reduction procedure has carefully been designed, so that the relative uncertainty interval of the measured heat transfer coefficient in microtubes is kept within ±10%. Up to 70 K liquid superheat over the saturation temperature is observed at low heat and mass fluxes. The onset of the superheat is found to be dependent on the mass flux and the boiling number of the refrigerant examined. In the saturated boiling regime, the heat transfer characteristics are much different from those in conventional-size tubes. The heat transfer coefficient is monotonically decreased with increasing the vapor quality, and becomes independent of the mass flux. Most empirical formulas are not in accordance with the present experimental data. Since the prediction using the nucleate boiling term of Kandlikar’s empirical correlations coincides with the present results, the convection effect should be minor in microtubes. On the other hand, the pressure loss characteristics are qualitatively in accordance with the conventional correlation formula while quantitatively much lower. These phenomena can be explained by the fact that the annular flow prevails in microtubes.  相似文献

In this paper a generalized approach to the problem of heat transfer through convective fins is given. The proper dimensionless variables, which specify the general problem are identified, and upper bounds of the values of the dimensionless number Nr defined as “the ratio of the heat transferred by the fin to that of the corresponding bare surface” are derived. It was shwon that these limiting values of the Nr are 1/√B1 and √2/B1 for longitudinal fins and spines respectively, where B1 is the Biot number hb/k, while for annular fins of constant thickness and hyperbolic profile, Nr? K(β)/√Bi, where K(β) is a number determined by the profile of the fin and the ratio β=x2/x1 of the outside to the inside radii. It was also shown that for longitudinal fins and spinces the possible adverse insulating effect by the use of the fin is avoided, if one selects the value of √hA/KC < 1, which is a rather stricter criterion than the one reported in the literature, namely that of hA/kC < 1 [2–5]. An example is given to show how one may utilize the appropriate value of Nr and the fin effectiveness e, to obtain the dimensions of the fin.  相似文献
