We consider the problem of scheduling orders for multiple different product types in an environment with m dedicated machines in parallel. The objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time. Each product type is produced by one and only one of the m dedicated machines; that is, each machine is dedicated to a specific product type. Each order has a weight and may also have a release date. Each order asks for certain amounts of various different product types. The different products for an order can be produced concurrently. Preemptions are not allowed. Even when all orders are available at time 0, the problem has been shown to be strongly NP-hard for any fixed number (?2) of machines. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of efficient heuristics for the case without release dates. Occasionally, however, we extend our results to the case with release dates. The heuristics considered include some that have already been proposed in the literature as well as several new ones. They include various static and dynamic priority rules as well as two more sophisticated LP-based algorithms. We analyze the performance bounds of the priority rules and of the algorithms and present also an in-depth comparative analysis of the various rules and algorithms. The conclusions from this empirical analysis provide insights into the trade-offs with regard to solution quality, speed, and memory space.  相似文献

Consider m identical machines in parallel, each of which can produce k different product types. There is no setup cost when the machines switch from producing one product type to another. There are n orders each of which requests various quantities of the different product types. All orders are available for processing at time t = 0, and preemption is allowed. Order i has a weight wi and its completion time is the time when its last requested product type finishes. Our goal is to find a preemptive schedule such that the total weighted completion time ∑wiCiwiCi is minimized. We show that this problem is NP-hard even when all jobs have identical weights and there are only two machines. Motivated by the computational complexity of the problem, we propose a simple heuristic and show that it obeys a worst-case bound of 2 − 1/m. Finally, empirical studies show that our heuristic performs very well when compared with a lower bound of the optimal cost.  相似文献

We present a (2+2ln2+ε)-approximation algorithm for the classical nonpreemptive scheduling problem to minimize the total weighted completion time of jobs on identical parallel machines subject to release dates and precedence constraints, improving upon the previously best known 4-approximation algorithm from 1998. The result carries over to the more general problem with precedence delays and generalizes a recent result by Li (2017) for the problem without release dates or delays.  相似文献

Baker and Nuttle [K.R. Baker, H.L.W. Nuttle, Sequencing independent jobs with a single resource, Naval Research Logistics Quarterly 27 (1980) 499–510] studied the following single-variable-resource scheduling problem: sequencing n jobs for processing by a single resource to minimize a function of job completion times, when the availability of the resource varies over time. When the objective function to be minimized is the total weighted completion time, Baker and Nuttle conjectured that the problem is NP-hard. We show in this note that the conjecture is true.  相似文献

We consider the classical two-machine flow-shop scheduling for minimizing the total weighted completion time. For this problem, the computational complexity of a version in which the jobs have a common processing time on the second machine, has not been addressed. We show that the problem is unary NP-hard, answering an open problem posed in Zhu et al. (2016). Then we present an approximation algorithm for the problem with worst-case performance ratio at most 2.  相似文献

In this note, we consider the scheduling problem of minimizing the sum of the weighted completion times on a single machine with one non-availability interval on the machine under the non-resumable scenario. Together with a recent 2-approximation algorithm designed by Kacem [I. Kacem, Approximation algorithm for the weighted flow-time minimization on a single machine with a fixed non-availability interval, Computers & Industrial Engineering 54 (2008) 401–410], this paper is the first successful attempt to develop a constant ratio approximation algorithm for this problem. We present two approaches to designing such an algorithm. Our best algorithm guarantees a worst-case performance ratio of 2+ε2+ε.  相似文献

This paper explores scheduling a realistic variant of open shops with parallel machines per working stage. Since real production floors seldom employ a single machine for each operation, the regular open shop problem is very often in practice extended with a set of parallel machines at each stage. The purpose of duplicating machines in parallel is to either eliminate or to reduce the impact of bottleneck stages on the overall shop efficiency. The objective is to find the sequence which minimizes total completion times of jobs. We first formulate the problem as an effective mixed integer linear programming model, and then we employ memetic algorithms to solve the problem. We employ Taguchi method to evaluate the effects of different operators and parameters on the performance of memetic algorithm. To further enhance the memetic algorithm, we hybridize it with a simple form of simulated annealing as its local search engine. To assess the performance of the model and algorithms, we establish two computational experiments. The first one is small-sized instances by which the model and general performance of the algorithms are evaluated. The second one consists of large-sized instances by which we further evaluate the algorithms.  相似文献

We consider scheduling problems in the master slave model, which was introduced by Sahni in 1996. The goal is to minimize the makespan and the total completion time. It has been shown that the problem of minimizing makespan is NP-hard. Sahni and Vairaktarakis developed some approximation algorithms to generate schedules whose makespan is at most constant times the optimal. In this paper, we show that the problem of minimizing total completion time is NP-hard in the strong sense. Then we develop algorithms to generate schedules whose total completion time and makespan are both bounded by some constants times their optimal values.

This paper focuses on the problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m identical parallel machines for the objective of minimizing total tardiness of the jobs. We develop dominance properties and lower bounds, and develop a branch and bound algorithm using these properties and lower bounds as well as upper bounds obtained from a heuristic algorithm. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems and results show that the algorithm solves problems with moderate sizes in a reasonable amount of computation time.  相似文献

Minimizing average completion time in the presence of release dates   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A natural and basic problem in scheduling theory is to provide good average quality of service to a stream of jobs that arrive over time. In this paper we consider the problem of schedulingn jobs that are released over time in order to minimize the average completion time of the set of jobs. In contrast to the problem of minimizing average completion time when all jobs are available at time 0, all the problems that we consider are NP-hard, and essentially nothing was known about constructing good approximations in polynomial time. We give the first constant-factor approximation algorithms for several variants of the single and parallel machine models. Many of the algorithms are based on interesting algorithmic and structural relationships between preemptive and nonpreemptive schedules and linear programming relaxations of both. Many of the algorithms generalize to the minimization of averageweighted completion time as well. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. We consider a class of non-identical parallel-machine scheduling problems in which the goal is to minimize total (or mean) weighted (or unweighted) completion time. Models and relaxations are collected and classified in this paper. Heuristics and optimizing techniques are surveyed for the problems. And a few of interesting areas for future research are also provided.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion time on a single machine. Jobs processing times are increasing linear function of start times. First, we present some new dominance properties for this NP-hard problem. And next, using these properties, we develop a memetic algorithm for the problem. The results of computational experiments show the good performance of the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

This paper deals with a single machine scheduling problem with start time dependent job processing times. The job processing times are characterized by decreasing linear functions dependent on their start times. The problem is to find a schedule for which the total weighted completion time is minimized. It is proved that the problem is NP-hard. Some properties of special cases of the general problem are also given. Based on these results, two heuristic algorithms are constructed and their performance is compared.  相似文献

In this paper, we address a two-machine flow shop scheduling problem under simple linear deterioration. By a simple linear deterioration function, we mean that the processing time of a job is a simple linear function of its execution start time. The objective is to find a sequence that minimizes total weighted completion time. Optimal schedules are obtained for some special cases. For the general case, several dominance properties and two lower bounds are derived to speed up the elimination process of a branch-and-bound algorithm. A heuristic algorithm is also proposed to overcome the inefficiency of the branch-and-bound algorithm. Computational analysis on randomly generated problems is conducted to evaluate the branch-and-bound algorithm and heuristic algorithm.  相似文献

Various sum of weighted completion time problems are compared. The constraints considered include release date, deadline, and continuous machine processing. Relations between the problems are developed by examining the computational complexity of transforming one problem class into another. These results give indications of the relative computational effort required to solve different problem classes.  相似文献

In this paper we present constructive algorithms for the classical deterministic scheduling problem of minimizing the makespan on identical machines. Since the problem is known to beNP-hard in the strong sense, the approximate algorithms play a relevant role when solving this problem. The proposed algorithms are based on list scheduling procedures, but the assignment rule is not the same for the full set of jobs. Computational results show that these algorithms perform very well. This paper considers the scheduling problem of parallel batch processing machines with non-identical job sizes. The jobs are processed in batches and the machines have the same capacity. The models of minimizing makespan and total completion time are given using mixed integer programming method and the computational complexity is analyzed. The bound on the number of feasible solutions is given and the properties of the optimal solutions are presented. Then a polynomial time algorithm is proposed and the worst case ratios for minimizing total completion time and makespan is proved to be 2 and (8/3–2/3 m) respectively. To test the proposed algorithm, we generate different levels of random instances. The computational results demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm for minimizing the two objectives.  相似文献

This paper deals with a single-machine scheduling problem with multiple orders per job (MOJ) considerations. Both lot processing machines and item processing machines are also examined. There are two primary decisions that must be made in the proposed problem: (1) how to group the orders together, and (2) how to schedule the jobs once they are formed. In order to obtain the optimal solution to a scheduling problem, these two decisions should be made simultaneously. The performance measure is the total completion time of all orders. Two mixed binary integer programming models are developed to optimally solve this problem. Also, two efficient heuristics are proposed for solving large-sized problems. Computational results are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the models and the effectiveness of the heuristics.  相似文献
