The influence of both nanotube orientation and length on the electrochemical properties of electrodes modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes was investigated. Gold electrodes were modified with either randomly dispersed or vertically aligned nanotubes to which ferrocenemethylamine was attached. Electron transfer kinetics were found to depend strongly on the orientation of the nanotube, with electron transfer between the gold electrode and the ferrocene moiety being 40 times slower through randomly dispersed nanotubes than through vertically aligned nanotubes. The difference is hypothesized to be due to electron transfer being more direct through a single tube than that with electrodes modified with randomly dispersed nanotubes. With the vertically aligned nanotubes the rate constant for electron transfer varied inversely with the mean length of the nanotubes. The results indicate there is an advantage in using aligned carbon nanotube arrays over randomly dispersed nanotubes for achieving efficient electron transfer to bound redox active species such as in the case of bioelectronic or photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

Direct measurement of ion diffusion in aligned, densified single-walled carbon nanotube electrodes showed that the diffusion coefficient for transport of ions (KSCN in acetonitrile) parallel to the alignment direction of the nanotubes was close to the theoretical limit of perfectly straight pores, achieving a value 20 times larger than that of activated carbon electrodes (1 × 10(-5) vs 5 × 10(-7) cm(2)/s). In contrast, the diffusion coefficient for ion transport perpendicular to the alignment direction was an order of magnitude smaller (8 × 10(-7) cm(2)/s). As an example of the ramifications of this anisotropic diffusion phenomenon, the difference in performance of the aligned carbon nanotubes as electrochemical-capacitor electrodes was evaluated. At low discharge rates, the performances of the two orientations were identical, but as the discharge rate was increased, a more rapid decline in capacitance was observed for the perpendicular orientation (66 vs 14% decline in capacitance when the discharge current was increased from 0.01 to 1 A/g). Furthermore, the maximum power rating of the perpendicular electrode was lower than that of the parallel electrode (1.85 vs 3 kW/kg during operation at 1 V).  相似文献

Direct electron transfer between an electrode and the redox active centre of glucose oxidase, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), is probed using carbon nanotube modified gold electrodes. Gold electrodes are first modified with a self‐assembled monolayer of cysteamine and then shortened single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are aligned normal to the electrode surface by self‐assembly. The electrochemistry of these aligned nanotube electrode arrays is initially investigated using potassium ferricyanide which showed SWNT act as nanoelectrodes with the ends of the tubes more electrochemically active than the walls. Subsequently the nanotubes are plugged into the enzymes in one of two ways. In the first method, native glucose oxidase is covalently attached to the ends of the aligned tubes which allowed close approach to FAD and direct electron transfer to be observed with a rate constant of 0.3 s?1. In the second strategy, FAD was attached to the ends of the tubes and the enzyme reconstituted around the surface immobilized FAD. This latter approach allowed more efficient electron transfer to the FAD with a rate constant of 9 s?1.  相似文献

A simple acid treatment method was applied to remove the catalyst impurities and other residues contaminated in the vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays. We demonstrated that acid treatment was an efficient approach for aligned carbon nanotube purification. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the morphology of the aligned carbon nanotube arrays and to determine the efficiency of the purification. Using hydrochloric acid could efficiently eliminate catalyst impurities and retain the original structures of the aligned carbon nanotube arrays. The method provided a simple, economical, and effective way to purify the aligned carbon nanotubes, and it would promote the applications of vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays in electronic field.  相似文献

Films of chemically shortened and functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been formed on a gold electrode by electrophoretic deposition. Applying ultrasonic energy resulted in dramatic changes of the film morphology; the deposited SWNT bundles reassembled and oriented normal to the electrode. Oriented SWNT bundles with high density (more than 250 bundles/microm (2)) not only presented narrow size distributions, but uniformly spread on the electrode. We discuss the mechanism of SWNT orientation by analyzing the variation in the film morphology with ultrasonication time. In addition, we suggest that the 3D displays of AFM images can lead to misjudgment of nanotube alignment. The method for aligning SWNTs normal to the electrode may be competitive with chemical vapor deposition or screen printing, the predominant methods by which vertically aligned SWNT films have been fabricated to date.  相似文献

The chemical vapor deposition growth of unusual arrangements of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by the combined of use patterned catalysts and quartz substrates is reported. Nearly perfectly aligned, high-coverage arrays of SWNTs can be generated in this manner. High-coverage random networks of SWNTs can also be created in the same growth step, with good spatial alignment and electrical interfaces to the aligned arrays. Tubes with these geometries are ideally suited to applications in thin-film electronic devices. We demonstrate this possibility through the construction of thin-film-type transistors in which the random networks form the source and drain electrodes and the aligned arrays form the channel.  相似文献

Vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube arrays grown on quartz substrate are obtained by co-pyrolysis of xylene and ferrocene at 850 oC in a tube furnace. Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements show that the single-walled carbon nanotubes are only present on top of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube arrays. It has been revealed that isolated single-walled carbon nanotubes are only present in those floating catalyst generated materials. It thus suggests that the single-walled carbon nanotubes here are also generated by floating catalyst. Vertically alignedcarbon nanotube arrays on the quartz substrate have shown good orientation and good graphitization. Meanwhile, to investigate the growth mechanism, two bi-layers carbon nan-otube films with di erent thickness have been synthesized and analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the two-layer vertically aligned carbon nanotube films grow “bottom-up”. There are distinguished Raman scattering signals for the second layer itself, surface of the first layer, interface between the first and second layer, side wall and bottom surface. It indicates that the obtained carbon nanotubes follow the base-growth mechanism, and the single-walled carbon nanotubes grow from their base at the growth beginning when iron catalyst particles have small size. Those carbon nanotubes with few walls (typically <5 walls) have similar properties, which also agree with the base-growth mechanism.  相似文献

While high shear alignment has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of single‐wall carbon nanotube (SWNT)‐polymer composites, this method does not allow for control over the electrical and dielectric properties of the composite and often results in degradation of these properties. Here, we report a novel method to actively align SWNTs in a polymer matrix, which permits control over the degree of alignment of the SWNTs without the side effects of shear alignment. In this process, SWNTs were aligned via AC field‐induced dipolar interactions among the nanotubes in a liquid matrix followed by immobilization by photopolymerization under continued application of the electric field. Alignment of SWNTs was controlled as a function of magnitude, frequency, and application time of the applied electric field. The degree of SWNT alignment was assessed using optical microscopy and polarized Raman spectroscopy, and the morphology of the aligned nanocomposites was investigated by high‐resolution scanning electron microscopy. The structure of the field induced aligned SWNTs was intrinsically different from that of shear aligned SWNTs. In the present work, SWNTs are not only aligned along the field, but also migrate laterally to form thick, aligned SWNT percolative columns between the electrodes. The actively aligned SWNTs amplify the electrical and dielectric properties of the composite. All of these properties of the aligned nanocomposites exhibited anisotropic characteristics, which were controllable by tuning the applied field parameters. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrated the controllable interconnection of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) under alternating current (ac) electric field. The interconnected carbon nanotubes were found to be parallel with the electric flux and increased abruptly with deposition time following a self-accelerating process. Theoretical simulation indicates that the alignment and the interconnection of carbon nanotubes were induced by the dielectrophoresis force and the electric field redistribution at the nanotube apexes.  相似文献

Asymmetric end-functionalization of carbon nanotubes was achieved by sequentially floating a substrate-free aligned carbon nanotube film on two different photoreactive solutions with only one side of the nanotube film being contacted with the photoreactive solution and exposed to UV light each time. The resultant nanotubes with different chemical reagents attached onto their opposite tube-ends should be very useful for site-selective self-assembling of carbon nanotubes into many novel functional structures for various potential applications.  相似文献

A technique has been developed utilizing polarized Raman spectroscopy to measure alignment of carbon nanotubes in situ in a polymer matrix under an applied electric field. Previous studies of alignment have been restricted to optically transparent solvents or polymerized specimens that prevent accurate analyses of alignment dynamics in polymers. The effects of electric field strength on the degree of alignment and the time to achieve an aligned state are discussed. The use of in situ, real-time polarized Raman spectroscopy provides a non-invasive technique for assessing carbon nanotube alignment, which can assist in determining processing conditions to improve the mechanical and electrical properties of aligned nanocomposites.  相似文献

Electrodes modified with carbon nanomaterials find wide ranging applications in electrochemistry such as in energy generation and storage through to applications in electroanalysis. A substantial limitation is the presence of metallic impurities which vary between batches and can produce erroneous results. Consequently we have explored the electrochemical properties of metallic impurity free carbon nanotube paste electrodes using potassium ferrocyanide and hydrogen peroxide as model compounds. In terms of the latter utilising cyclic voltammetry, a linear range from 0.75 to 3 mM with a limit of detection of 0.19 mM is possible using the electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen peroxide while using the electrochemical reduction of the target analyte, a linear range from 0.5 to 249 mM is possible with a detection limit of 0.43 mM.The ultra-small size of the carbon nanotubes and fabrication methodology result in a tightly bound carbon nanotube electrode surface which does not exhibit thin-layer behaviour resulting in highly reproducible electrodes with the %RSD found to be 5.5%. These analytical ranges, detection limits and reproducibility are technologically useful. The carbon nanotubes utilised are completely free from metallic impurities and do not require lengthy processing to remove impurities and consequently have no variation in the purity of the nanomaterial between batches as is commonly the case for other available carbon nanotube material. The impurity free nature of this nanomaterial allows for highly reproducible and intelligent sensors based on carbon nanotubes to be understood and realised for the first time.  相似文献

We report on the formation of highly anisotropic nanotube composite materials, made by the attachment of gold nanoparticles to the surface of the single-walled carbon nanotubes, followed by preparation of an aligned composite film by compression in a Langmuir-Blodgett trough. The gold is attached in a one-step sonication procedure. The gold-modified nanotube material forms a stable suspension in toluene and has been characterized by atomic force and scanning force microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The aligned films have highly anisotropic electrical properties, with a factor of approximately 3000 difference in the conductivity between the aligned and perpendicular directions.  相似文献

Vertically aligned well-separated N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown on a silicon substrate by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Angular near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) was used to investigate the vertical alignment of as-grown CNTs. In addition, both individual tubes and tube bundles were characterized by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Simultaneous analysis of both spectroscopic techniques provides information on chemical environment, orbital orientation between carbon and heteroatoms, and local curvature effects. We demonstrate the utility of NEXAFS as an in situ probe of CNTs.  相似文献

We report an approach to the development of advanced structural composites based on engineered multiscale carbon nanotube-carbon fiber reinforcement. Electrophoresis was utilized for the selective deposition of multi- and single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on woven carbon fabric. The CNT-coated carbon fabric panels were subsequently infiltrated with epoxy resin using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) to fabricate multiscale hybrid composites in which the nanotubes were completely integrated into the fiber bundles and reinforced the matrix-rich regions. The carbon nanotube/carbon fabric/epoxy composites showed approximately 30% enhancement of the interlaminar shear strength as compared to that of carbon fiber/epoxy composites without carbon nanotubes and demonstrate significantly improved out-of-plane electrical conductivity.  相似文献

We report on the sensing mechanism of electrical detection of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) hybridization for Au- and Cr-contacted field effect transistors based on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) networks. Barrier height extraction via low-temperature electrical measurement provides direct evidence for the notion that the energy level alignment between electrode and SWCNTs can be affected by DNA immobilization and hybridization. The study of location-selective capping using photoresist provides comprehensive evidence that the sensing of DNA is dominated by the change in metal-SWCNT junctions rather than the channel conductance.  相似文献

Synthesis and characterization of nanotubes and nanowires constitute an important part of nanoscience since these materials are essential building units for several devices. We have prepared aligned carbon nanotube bundles and Y-junction nanotubes by the pyrolysis of appropriate organic precursors. The aligned bundles are useful for field emission display while the Y-junction nanotubes are likely to be useful as nanochips since they exhibit diode properties at the junction. By making use of carbon nanotubes, nanowires of metals, metal oxides and GaN have been obtained. Both the oxide and GaN nanowires are single crystalline. Gold nanowires exhibit plasmon bands varying markedly with the aspect ratio. GaN nanowires show excellent photoluminescence characteristics. It has been possible to synthesise nanotubes and nanowires of metal chalcogenides by employing different strategies.  相似文献

This work describes a simple technique for direct patterning of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) composite electrodes in a large area on a substrate based on the solution transfer process by microcontact printing using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamps. Various shapes of SWNT/PEDOT-PSS composite patterns, such as line, circle, and square, can be easily fabricated with high pattern fidelity and structural integrity. The single parallel line pattern device exhibits high electrical conductivity (0.75 × 10(5) S/m) and electronic stability because of alignment of nanotubes and big-size SWNT bundles (~5 nm). The electromechanical study reveals that the composite patterns show ~1% resistance change along SWNT alignment direction and ~5% resistance change along vertical alignment direction after 200 bend cycles. Our approach provides a facile, low-cost method to pattern transparent conductive SWNT/polymer composite electrodes and demonstrates a novel platform for future integration of conducting SWNT/polymer composite patterns for optoelectronic applications.  相似文献
