The strength and deformability of reinforced polymers in tension across the fibers is investigated. It is assumed that the polymer deforms as an ideal elastoplastic body. Relations are obtained for the nature of the deformation of the polymer between the fibers and the strength and deformability of the composite with allowance for the structural distribution of the components. Theoretical stress-strain diagrams are presented for composites with different reinforcement densities and resin elasticities. The theoretical values of the strength and deformation of reinforced polymers with the load applied across the fibers are compared with the results of experiments on model specimens of epoxy-Thiokol polymers.Leningrad Mechanical Institute. The correlations between the molecular structure and intermolecular energy and the fatigue and elastic properties of fibers are considered. We investigate the boundary-value problem describing plane steady seepage through a soil layer into an underlying zero-head layer capped by an impervious section. The solution of the problem of the percolation of a nonlinearly viscous (with a power flow law) fluid through unit cells is used to find the dependence of the permeability coefficient of a unidirectional layer of fibers on fiber concentration, parameters characterizing the location of the fibers, and the parameters of the fluid (the exponent in the flow law) for random and regular fiber configurations in the transverse plane. It is established that the degree of nonuniformity of the pore space of the layer has a significant effect on its permeability and that this effect increases with an increase in the nonlinearity of the fluid. Data from a model experiment and computer simulation are used to describe the mechanism of transformation of the pore space by the fluid front. Conclusions 1. Actual stresses in reinforcement fibers of a loaded composite have been measured by infrared spectroscopy.2. It has been shown that the plain rule of mixtures, not accounting for changes in mechanical properties of the matrix during processing of a composite, does not apply to a hot molded polyethylene-polypropylene composite.3. It is suggested that around the reinforcement fibers there exists an ordered layer of the matrix material capable of carrying a heavy load. A method is proposed, furthermore, for calculating the mechanical characteristics of the composite with such a layer. The question of the stress distribution in plastics reinforced with anisotropic fibers and subjected to transverse normal loading is considered. The stresses in the components are determined by the methods of the theory of elasticity using stress functions. The theoretical relations obtained are used to construct diagrams showing the distribution of the tangential, radial, and shear stresses in the composite and the isoclines of the concentration coefficient for a carbon-reinforced plastic. Conclusions 1. It is concluded on the basis of an analysis of experimental data and also from theoretical investigations with respect to stress redistribution upon the breaking of fibers that the successive breaking of a number of fibers, caused by the overload from the breaking of individual fibers, is one of the principal mechanisms according to which the complete failure of a material reinforced with brittle fibers takes place.2. A discrete model of a composite material has been worked out. A random fiber strength distribution over the surfaces of the cross sections of the composite material is produced on the computer by the application of Monte Carlo methods.3. A program was written for the computer which simulates the testing of composite materials, permitting the investigation of the statistical accumulation of damage in failure processes as well as the avalanchetype processes of the complete failure of a material.4. The effect of the statistical distribution of the strength of the reinforcing fibers, the ratio of properties, and the volume fractions of composites on the failure processes of composite materials is investigated. Deformation diagrams of a D-16 aluminum alloy-boron fiber composite material, constructed on the basis of an anlysis of the simulated process of fiber breaking in a composite, agree well with the experimental relations.5. Conclusions In this work, it was attempted to demonstrate the special features of polymer fibers manifested primarily in a special mechanism of formation of the interphase layer during formation of the composite material. The role of the interphase layer in this case is not reduced just to dissipation of the energy generated during rupture of a fiber. It can also play the role of an element of the structure of the composite acting as a possible source of initial cracks. By using the method of maximum likelihood, the parameters of two versions of a mathematical model for fatigue damage accumulation in a laminate are estimated. The models, which are founded on the Markov chain theory, are very simple: they do not take into account the specific structural features of a composite and therefore cannot provide numerical coincidence with experimental fatigue test data, but they can be used for a nonlinear regression analysis of fatigue curves. A simple method is offered for approximately estimating model parameters, some of which characterize the distribution of the local static strength. The results of a study of the damage suffered by thin-walled polymer shells are evaluated on the basis of an analysis of the process of crack formation and the variation of the modulus of elasticity under cyclic deformation. The process of fatigue failure has been studied in relation to shells made of three groups of polymeric materials. It is shown that for the polymers investigated there are at least two different fatigue fracture mechanisms. Experiments are performed on glass/polyester composites under fatigue loading. The stiffness degradation is recorded as an indirect measure of material damage. The stiffness decrease rate is described by a power dependence on stress; this relationship allows the fatigue law to be derived. Stiffness-controlled fatigue curves are generated and presented in an S-N-diagram based on normalized stress (equivalent to strain). Fundamental equations of the theory of spatially reinforced media with a matrix reinforced by spherical particles are proposed on the basis of a linearly reinforced layer and tl.e hypothesis of a longitudinal state. The tensile and flexural strength and elastic properties of continuous boron fibers 95–105 µ in diameter obtained by depositing boron on a tungsten filament 10–12 µ in diameter have been investigated. The strength properties are primarily determined by the defects present at the boron sheath-core interface and for the fibers investigated have a limit of approximately 400 kgf/mm2. Methods are proposed for experimentally estimating the temperature-time aging of a filled rubber and the degree of damage accumulation in high-frequency fatigue tests. A procedure for experimentally determining the energy dissipation function of a material from the specimen temperature kinetics is described. The results of an investigation of the fatigue properties of two series of filled rubbers at a vibration frequency of 20 kHz are presented. It is shown that the fatigue failure of the materials tested is thermal in character. Starting from an analysis of the statistical accumulation of the defects during rupturing of the separate fibers in a composite material, a theoretical method suited for constructing deformation diagrams of composite materials and based on averaging of the stresses in the defect volumes of the material is proposed. Nonlinear damage accumulation rules are usually constructed on the basis of certain hypotheses derived from semiempirical considerations. A method is proposed for constructing an averaged nonlinear damage accumulation rule based on the direct utilization of the results of static fatigue tests on glass-reinforced plastic specimens.
